What says Fall better than a good oldfashioned hayride? On Saturday, October 13,
KCUSY will travel through Heritage Park in
hayride style, complete with campfire, s’mores
and cider. All this and the bus ride to the Park
for only $10! Everyone will meet at the Youth
Lounge at 7:45 pm, and return to the lounge
at 11 pm. RSVP by October 5, to Stef for this
not-to-be-missed great time.
Another fall favorite is the annual
Kinnus, the largest EMTZA Regional
Convention, which will be held this year in
Omaha, November 22-25. All 9th-12th grade
USYers from Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri and Nebraska are invited to gather for
social, Shabbat and social action programming. Applications and more information will
be available soon; so plan now to join the fun,
see old friends and meet new ones.

From the Rabbi’s Study
Shabbat In New, Improved and Classic Flavors!
As the New Year is underway, many may be thinking of ways to add some spirituality to their week. While it may be considered cliché for the rabbi to suggest Shabbat in
our 24/7 connected world, I would argue that Shabbat has never been more necessary.
Admittedly, though, Shabbat morning services can sometimes be daunting for
families with busy (and differing) schedules. Our main service in Goldsmith Hall on
Shabbat morning is just one doorway into Shabbat.
Some of our services are new for this year, and others have been spruced up. I
wanted to highlight some ways to connect, and also explain what to expect.

Buy a Ticket and Get a Mitzvah
During the 1850s, the Baltimore Hebrew Congregation,
in order to alleviate its financial
stresses and maintain decorum,
imposed a structure of fines for its
congregants. Singing louder than
the Hazzan, taking off one’s tallit
before the completion of services
and leaving the sanctuary while the Torah was read
were among the infractions that generated a fine. Although many may be tempted to implement our own
CBS system of fines, I believe that we have a more
creative and educational fundraising idea—our 613
Mitzvot Raffle.

representing each of the 613 Mitzvot in the Torah. Your ticket numbers will correspond to the
number of the Mitzvot. Those of you who regularly come to Shul on Shabbat morning know that
we feature a different mitzvah each week which
still is available to purchase. For instance, Mitzvah number 212 (one of my favorites) from Lev
19:3 commands that we shall honor and respect
our parents. Mitzvah 405 from Numbers 29:1
commands that we shall hear the sounding of the
Shofar on Rosh HaShanah. At the time we went
to press, both of these Mitzvot remain available.
This is a great way to learn a bit about the Mitzvot
while supporting our congregation. The drawing
for the winning ticket will take place on December 10th.

A bona fide proposal for study in Israel, as part of an established program or as an individual or original project.
-
References from teachers, rabbis or similarly qualified individuals.
-
Or any combination of the above.
Age of applicants is not a factor, and while they need not be affiliated with the synagogue, first preference will be
given to meritorious applicants from CBS. To apply: submit the above documents to substantiate your qualifications.
These documents must be received by the Beth Shalom Scholarship Committee no later than November 30, care of the
Beth Shalom Administrative Office at 14200 Lamar Ave, Overland Park, Kansas 66223.

Three Year Olds Discuss Rosh HaShanah
Miss Michele and Miss Jessica’s three year olds have been discussing Rosh HaShanah. They
learned about the symbols of Rosh HaShanah by decorating their own shofarim, making stained
glass apple art, and using apples as stamps to make beautiful
creations! They have also tasted different colors of apples and
made a chart of which color each student liked best! They had
the opportunity to make honey applesauce muffins—
yummy!
This class is also responsible for watering the
Beth Shalom Garden on Tuesdays. The kids have picked
corn and are looking forward to picking pumpkins.
Meet Miss Michele and Miss Jessica’s three
year old class.
Polsky Religious School (PRS)
Patti Kroll, Coordinator of Education | [email protected]
PRS Classes Include Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens,
Krav Maga, Digital Ethics & More
The Polsky Religious School has gotten off to a great start with both
students and teachers settling into their routines. We have some new twists
on existing programs including Rabbi Glickman helping to start class on
Wednesday afternoon. We have an amazing staff and students who really want
to learn.
In October, our 3rd grade students and their parents will have a lively Teens Learning Krav Maga
and informative program on the Torah led by Stef Williams, our Youth Direc- at Hebrew High
tor. All our students will visit the sukkah, recite the blessings and shake the
lulav and etrog.
The Fall semester of Monday Journeys classes will begin on October
15th. Students in grades 3-5 will be preparing and planning for their family
Chanukah dinner on Monday, December 10th. Each week will have a different focus including cooking, art, drama and Israeli Dance.
Hebrew High begins again on Tuesday, October 23rd. Students have
selected classes for fall and spring semesters such as Jewish Values and Ethics
Through Stories, Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens, Krav Maga, Digital
Ethics, Peer Support Training. There will be a three week “mini-mester” in
January, and students have selected a class in multi-media, Lights Camera Action, or Jewish Cooking.
The first B’nei Mitzvah parent/student workshop will be held on Sunday, October 21, 5:30 pm, at the Jewish Community Campus. The topic is tzedakah/
Tikkun Olam. Students and parents will begin with a text study led by Rabbi
Glickman, hear about the many ideas for their B’nei Mitzvah project and end
with the group participating in a mitzvah project with the community food
bank at Jewish Family Services. This is a required program for our B’nei Mitzvah families. There will be two more programs later in the school year.

Editorial Comments
“Home is where the heart is.”
That is an idiom most of us have heard
all our lives. This was brought “home”
to me recently. For the past 12 years we
have spent Rosh HaShanah in Las Vegas
at Temple Beth Sholom with our daughter, son-in-law and granddaughters.
Peter and I have grown very fond of the Bev Newman

congregation’s rabbi, Felipe Goodman,
and this year we enjoyed the wonderful voice of Hazzan
Rob Menes. But, we would never think of observing
Yom Kippur any place but CBS. Walking into White
Theatre and seeing the familiar faces of our congregants
helped us feel at “home.” Our hearts are at CBS.
Cream Cheese
Squares
Ingredients:
• 2(8 ounce) cans
refrigerated crescent
roll dough *
• 2 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese
• 1 cup white sugar
• 1/2 cup margarine, melted
• 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
• 1 egg
• 1/4 cup of sugar
Directions
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9x13 inch pan.
2. Press one can of the crescent rolls into the bottom of the
prepared pan. In a medium bowl, mix together the cream
cheese, 1 cup of sugar, and egg until smooth and creamy.
Spread over the crescent layer. Unroll the second can of
crescent rolls and lay them on top of the cream cheese
layer. Do not press down. Pour the melted margarine over
the entire pan. Combine the remaining 1/4 cup of sugar
and cinnamon; sprinkle over the top.
3. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes in the preheated oven, or until
the top is crisp and golden.
*Kosher Crescent Roll Dough is available at Trader Joe’s.
