Sullivan County Community Foundation:
Ten Years and Still Growing
Sullivan County and the Wabash Valley Community Foundation
are celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Sullivan County
Community Foundation. To date, the Sullivan County
Community Foundation has given more than $1.7 million
in grants and scholarships to assist communities and
organizations in Sullivan County.
In 1998 a group of Sullivan County residents created the
Sullivan County Community Foundation as an affiliate of the
Wabash Valley Community Foundation, establishing a board
of directors made up of community volunteers. The Foundation
applied for matching funds through Lilly Endowment Inc.’s
GIFT Phase IV to go toward endowment building and direct
community grants.
Early in the process, the board surveyed community needs
through the newspaper and at the county’s Ag Day Breakfast.
Results of the survey, showing needs in the areas of seniors,
youth activities and educational activities outside the school
system for all ages, served as a guide for using the GIFT
Phase IV funds.
In that first year, five grants totaling $335,000 were handed
out for railroad crossing improvements, expanding a community
building and a senior center, constructing two Habitat homes
and building tennis courts. According to the first Sullivan County
Community Foundation board president Howard Unger, most of
the funds went toward building the Foundation’s endowment for
the long term.
The Foundation has done just that, growing its endowment to
$4.5 million. It has received more than 1,550 separate gifts,
and its donors have established 78 endowment funds.
One of the Sullivan County Community Foundation’s largest
funds was established in 2000 by James F. Jackson who
donated farm real estate in Kentucky to create a scholarship
for students pursuing “scientific or mathematical educational
attainment.”
Through the efforts of the Sullivan County Community
Foundation, the county has been able to benefit from $5.8
million in Community Alliance to Promote Education (CAPE)
fund grants offered by Lilly Endowment Inc. to improve literacy.
Focused on establishing a technological foundation for learning,
Sullivan County’s CAPE grants have funded a fiber optic network
to connect the county schools and main library, the creation of
a Community Learning Center, and training in technology for all
of the county’s teachers, among other programs. Indiana State
University and the Wabash Valley Community Foundation work
together to assist Sullivan County in implementing this grant.
Sullivan County Community Foundation’s Founding Members
Remaining on the board since the Foundation’s inception are:
• Sue Case – Ms. Case created one of the first funds in the
Foundation in memory of her husband, Jim, and has brought
numerous funds to the Foundation.
• Malinda Medsker – Ms. Medsker has been active in GIFT
conferences and training. She and her husband have established
a fund, and she has referred a number of funds to the Foundation.
• Jan Wright – Ms. Wright was responsible for the Foundation
receiving the CAPE grant.
• Nancy Tomey – Ms. Tomey remains an active board member.
• Martha Slopsema – Ms. Slopsema works hard at developing funds
for her company and for Sullivan County Business and Professional
Women.
Back on the board after a period of absence are:
• Howard Unger – Mr. Unger created an endowment for his wife.
• Troy Orwig – Mr. Orwig is another original member who has returned to the board.
Other founding members include:
• Dana Burton – Now deceased, Ms. Burton created a will leaving a
field of interest fund to provide funding for service learning projects
to benefit Sullivan County’s young people.
• Tom Gettinger – Mr. Gettinger’s extended family has created four
scholarship funds.
• Richard McHugh – Mr. McHugh started an early advised fund in
his and his wife's name.
• Steve Lippeatt
• Becky Compton
• Amy Lueking
• Sandy Drake
• Vaughn Reeves
• Judy Harris
• Elmer Smith
• Jill Laxton

Designated Funds Help Sustain and Grow
the Work of Nonprofit Organizations
Through the Wabash Valley Community Foundation, you can establish
or contribute to a designated fund to support one or more charitable
organizations in which you have a deep, personal interest. Designated
funds are endowments offering the assurance that a favorite charity
will receive financial support for upkeep and daily operations year
after year. If the organization you select ceases to exist or changes
its mission, the fund can be redirected so that it continues to address
your charitable intent.
Approximately 80 organizations have received Community Foundation
designated grants totaling $262,675.35 in the last year. (See
listing below.)
A designated fund assures that a gift to your chosen organization
continues even after your death. While you may give an annual gift
of, say, $100 to an organization, through your will you can provide
2007 Designated Grant Recipients
for an annual gift that is 20 times that. Your chosen agency is made
stronger, because perpetual support allows it to concentrate on new
growth rather than on finding ways to replace contributions lost when
a supporter passes away.
Nonprofits establish endowments
Many nonprofit organizations have established their own designated
funds or agency endowments in the Wabash Valley Community
Foundation. This ensures their donors that the endowed fund’s
principal will not be spent and can grow over time, providing a source
of lasting support. The Community Foundation’s economies of scale
provide organizations the benefits of a diverse investment portfolio
and low investment fees that typically come only with very large funds.
An organization’s regular donors can leave a bequest through the
Community Foundation to benefit the organization forever.

Welcome Two New Staff Members
Kathy Davis is Community Foundation’s
new Administrative Assistant
Foundation names Ashley Delaunois
new Affiliate Director
Kathy Davis has assumed the duties of Administrative
Assistant for the Wabash Valley Community Foundation.
Ashley R. Delaunois has been named the Wabash Valley
Community Foundation’s Affiliate Director for Clay and
Sullivan counties. She will work with volunteers,
organizations and donors in Clay and Sullivan counties.
A graduate of Indiana Business College, Kathy was
previously employed at the Vigo County Prosecutor’s Office
as a legal secretary where she did payroll, billing, budgeting
and accounts, among many other duties. She has also held
management positions.
A graduate of Indiana State University with a degree in Public
Relations, Ashley worked for four years in marketing and
management for Texas Roadhouse. Most recently she was
Director of Membership Development for the Terre Haute
Chamber of Commerce.
Kathy greets callers and visitors to the Community
Foundation, schedules and prepares materials for meetings,
enters gift information into the database and prepares
letters and donor acknowledgements.
For the Chamber, Ashley coordinated numerous networking
events, developed and implemented membership campaigns
and managed all Chamber
volunteers. In the
community, Ashley served
as a board member of the
Terre Haute Family Y and
staff liaison for Terre Haute
Young Leaders and has
been active as a co-chair
for fundraising events for
both groups.
“When it comes to
improving the community,
I will do what it takes
to help pull together to
get the job done,” Kathy
said. “We live in Riley
and our children attend
Riley Elementary, so being
a local resident of the
Wabash Valley, I was
very pleased to come to
work for the Wabash
Valley Community
Foundation where I can
help the community grow
and improve.”
Ashley is excited to begin
working with the Clay and
Sullivan boards as they
assist Wabash Valley
communities, organizations
and individuals.
Saying Goodbye!
All of us at the Community Foundation want to wish the
best to three staff members who have recently left us.
ended her work as the Sullivan County Community Foundation
affiliate director. She worked hard with both boards to create
many new funds and was dedicated to helping her volunteers
become as knowledgeable about community foundations as
they could be. Kay will be enjoying time with her grandchildren
and the winter warmth of her part-time residence in Florida.
Carolyn Monaghan had served as our administrative assistant
since 2000. She was a fabulous detail person, which was a
great benefit as she worked with the Community Foundation’s
many events. Also, Carolyn is a great people person, making
everyone she comes in contact with feel special. She is retiring
to spend more time with her family, but continues as a
volunteer with the Foundation’s 2008 Golf Tournament.
Jane Davison has left her Foundation position as assistant to
the executive director, where she had worked since Summer
2007. She brought great attention to detail in her work on the
Foundation’s most significant projects. Although Jane’s time
at the Community Foundation was short, she brought a great
sense of humor, a wonderful outlook and great organizational
skills to the Foundation.
Kay Aubin has been an affiliate director for the Community
Foundation since December, 2003. Her first two years were
spent with the Clay County Community Foundation, and she
