Avoid inclines, declines and bridges whenever possible. 5. Drive to the conditions. Severe winter conditions can reduce traction by 90% - which means it can increase your braking distance tenfold. 6. Look Ahead. With treacherous and reduced visibility you need to anticipate hazards. 7. Avoid distractions such as high radio volume and cell phone use. 8. Apply one force at a time. With reduced traction avoid applying the brakes or accelerating while turning whenever possible. 9. Gentle with the controls. To avoid spinning or locking the tires, or generating a skid, apply all of the controls smoothly and progressively. 10. Take a winter driving course.
