2014 Report to the Community Celebrating 25 Years
Celebrating 25 Years 2014 Report to the Community We believe our founders had a vision, our champions left a legacy, our children see a possibility. The future is in our hands. 2 25 Giving Loving Growing years of Friends and founders gathered at the Ramada Hotel and Conference Center on January 12 to celebrate a quarter century of accomplishments – made possible by our shared love for Hutchinson and Reno County. “In most communities, it would take a decade or more for a foundation to be organized, begin But more importantly, we were inspired by the possibilities for the next 25 years. its mission, and develop a state-wide reputation. Stories from members of our Legacy Society—those who have made end-oflife charitable pledges—inspired others to make commitments. Accomplishments of one organization sparked ideas in another. And people saw firsthand the power of a community endowment, for now and forever. It took the Hutchinson Community Foundation four years, but then we had something no other community had. We had Dick Dillon. Dick’s heart was in Hutchinson, and his dream was making Hutchinson a better place to live. He did that through the Community Foundation. He believed in the power and the importance of unrestricted giving. He wasn’t interested in recognition for his generosity but in impact, so that this community would thrive for generations to come … and then some.” 25th Anniversary Celebration January 12, 2014 4 –Carolyn Dillon Susan Buttram, Tom Sellers, Patsy Lovett, Steve Dillon, Sam Ontjes, Lisa Garcia and Butch Dillon 5 “Tonight I ask each of you: What’s YOUR vision for the future of our community? We invite you to reflect on where your heart is in Reno County, what you care about the most and what you want to see grow and thrive for generations to come.” –Susan Buttram Event Chair Virginia Rayl and Susan Buttram Daniel and Sarah Friesen 6 David Neal Bill Southern Planting the seed for gifts of grain Richard and Candace Robl Patty Kerr, Katherine Brown and Barbara Withrow At the event, farmers Robin and Sam Sanders were inspired by Mark and Susan Richardson’s gift of grain to endow enhancements to the Nickerson ball field. The Sanders not only decided to donate grain to the Cancer Council of Reno County through the Hutchinson Community Foundation, but they also asked the Foundation to develop a brochure about commodity donations so that they could talk to their friends and neighbors. Since February, more than $3,000 worth of grain has been funneled to the Cancer Council through the Foundation. 25th Anniversary Celebration January 12, 2014 Jack Sutton, Marilyn Bolton, Richard Manka, Carol Berger, Darla Neal, Clark Wesley and Dr. Jack Wortman 7 Celebrating legacy What do you love about our community? What are your hopes for future generations? As we look to the next 25 years, we’re grateful to the members of our Legacy Society—a group of people who care deeply about Hutchinson and Reno County and want to make sure that our children, grandchildren, and generations to come have an ever-improving quality of life. They have significantly given to an endowed fund while they’re living or have made a legacy commitment at the end of life, to ensure our community continues to thrive. “We’ve always thought that you need to give back. When we die, a sum of money will be left to the Community Foundation, and we have allocated a percentage to various agencies, including the Fund for Hutchinson. It’s because of hard work that we’ve been successful, so it’s just logical to want to give back to the community in some way.” –Peg Stephens A Powerful Estate Planning Tool Community foundations are designed to make charitable giving simple. And the love she and her late husband Philip shared for this community was just as amazing. As part of her estate, she earmarked $4 million for local charities, to be stewarded by Hutchinson Community Foundation. Born in 1904 on a farm seven miles southwest of Sterling, she worked as a secretary at United Power and Light, where an insistent bookkeeper seemed to visit her a little too often to be merely talking about business. That bookkeeper turned out to be Philip Lewis, her future husband. Not long after the Lewises were married, the couple moved to the home they had built on Monroe Street, where they spent all of their 49 years of marriage together. Philip died in 1986, but Estella drove her car and lived in her own home until age 97. She passed away in January 2013 at the age of 108. lifetime Now their legacy lives on through the Philip E. & Estella E. Lewis Endowed Fund, from which annual grants will be made to the following: American Red Cross of Reno County, Cancer Council of Reno County, Hospice & HomeCare of Reno County, Hutchinson Regional Medical Center Foundation, Hutchinson First Nazarene Church, Mid-America Nazarene College, General Board of the Church of the Nazarene and Salvation Army of Hutchinson. A portion of the annual grants will also go to the Fund for Hutchinson, for unrestricted giving, to meet the changing needs of the community. Estella Lewis “Philip & Estella’s generosity is an amazing example of how a commitment to giving back can have a powerful, ongoing effect on the community for generations.” –Marilyn Bolton Hutchinson Community Foundation Board Chair “Philip and Estella loved this community and the people in it. They did well financially and wished to leave a valuable legacy to the community,” said Commerce Bank trust officer and Foundation board member Dell Marie Shanahan Swearer. 11 Here, we pour our hearts into achieving greatness. 12 We pledge to help our people live with healthy bodies and joyful hearts. Because when you love something, nothing can stop you. 13 Our founders passionately advocated for a community endowment of unrestricted funds that could be directed to the most pressing issues of the time. The Fund for Hutchinson, now nearing $2 million, is that endowed unrestricted fund. Each year the Fund for Hutchinson grants $150,000 to organizations serving Reno County, yet we receive around $500,000 in requests. The needs are indeed greater than our ability to fund them. Until 2017, all gifts to the Fund for Hutchinson endowment may be matched 50% by the Kansas Health Foundation. Dick Dillon saw the possibility of the Fund for Hutchinson reaching $15-$20 million by 2030. Based on this vision, the Foundation has set two goals for the Fund for Hutchinson: $3 million by 2017 and $20 million by 2030. At $20 million, the Fund for Hutchinson would grant $1 million annually, significantly increasing our capacity to meet the community’s needs. These goals are bold, but we believe it can happen with your help. $3 million by 2017 $20 million by 2030 Bold Goals for the What is the Fund for Hutchinson? Donor advised funds make important grants, but the Fund for Hutchinson has the potential to address the deep, daunting challenges in our community. 14 Truly transforming Reno County, the Fund for Hutchinson is a “community savings account” that allows our community to take risks on new projects, address deep and daunting issues and try innovative solutions. The annual grant application process represents the one time of year that the Foundation can significantly respond to both new and pressing needs. Some of the grants are small but mighty, while others are large and far-reaching. Each, though, represents an innovative approach or collaboration, a new efficiency for an established organization, a critical need that requires “just-in-time” funding, or an opportunity that needs just that bit of local support to leverage great resources for our community. Beloved Teacher Leaves Gift to Improve Hutchinson Quality of Life Debbie Johnson Mosier touched the lives of thousands of Hutchinson students in her 21 years of teaching elementary, middle school and high school. Now her legacy will reach thousands more through a gift of $2 million divided among Hutchinson Public Library, Boys and Girls Club and Hutchinson Community Foundation. For Hutchinson Community Foundation, the $666,000 gift establishing the Debbie Johnson Mosier Fund for Hutchinson represents a major stride. “The Fund for Hutchinson is our community savings account,” said Aubrey Abbott Patterson, Hutchinson Community Foundation President. “Debbie saw that endowing her gift would make the greatest long-term impact and would allow us to address the ever-changing needs in our community. Debbie’s endowed gift moves us even closer to our 2017 goal of $3 million for the Fund for Hutchinson.” Fund for Hutchinson “Debbie was very proud of growing up in Hutchinson,” said friends Patty Crews and Chery Lackey. “She has a big smile now not because of pride, but because she’s happy that she could do something for the community she loved.” “It was important to Debbie to be a good teacher, person and example for others,” said friend Liz Peirce. “Debbie was able to make lives better in Hutchinson. Her gift will touch kids at the Club, people of all ages at the library and many, many generations of people through the Fund for Hutchinson. What a well-rounded gift!” The Power of Endowment 15 2014 MATCH Tuesday DAY On behalf of all of our nonprofit Match Day partners, thank you for growing the endowments that will help our community for years to come. Interfaith Housing Services, 77 32 Participating Nonprofit Endowments Sparking the spirit of giving As the clock struck midnight at the close of May 6, a few Match Day enthusiasts were still awake to celebrate a phenomenal 24 hours: over 600 donors helped raise $268,700 for area nonprofit endowments. Though donations were the ultimate goal, the spirit of giving stretched far beyond money. It put givers, thinkers and doers in the same place, focused on helping our community thrive. Casual conversations led to some pretty amazing opportunities. Take Ray Hemman from USD 308. He and Major James Mungai of the Salvation Army brainstormed a walking trail around the Walnut Street Park, adjacent to the Salvation Army office. And Nathan Reed, Superintendent at Fairfield. The Fairfield endowment fund had not received any donations before lunch, so he headed back to school and knocked on classroom doors to get donations from 25 teachers and staff—equaling more than $2,200. The spirit of giving exuded from Eagle Communications that day, to the point that a woman driving through from Colorado was compelled to stop and donate. She’d just heard a radio announcement as she looked up to see the Match Day flag, which she took as a sign to give. Match Day was a one-day event to help 32 nonprofits increase their endowments, with the help of a $50,000 match pool from Hutchinson Community Foundation. The Power of Endowment When a nonprofit creates an endowment, it symbolizes the organization’s commitment to a long and thriving future. Helping to build this long-term sustainability is one of our core missions. These were just two examples among the 30 families who used Match Day to show children the importance of living generously. “One of the biggest things we hear from parents is a desire to help their kids have generous and compassionate hearts,” said Foundation Program Officer Kari Mailloux. “The fact that dozens of families came out for Match Day tells me that Hutchinson has a very strong future.” The idea of encouraging youth to give back to their community is not new to Hutchinson Community Foundation. In 2004, Dick Dillon’s family created the Richard W. Dillon Memorial Fund for Youth Philanthropy to give Reno County high school students an opportunity to discuss local issues and learn about philanthropy and grantmaking. Each year the Youth Philanthropy Council (YPC) oversees a grant competition for organizations that serve or are led by youth ages zero to 18. Since 2004, more than $25,000 has been awarded from this fund. Hutchinson Community Foundation’s mission is to inspire philanthropy, collaboration and innovative leadership to strengthen our communities. Since 1989 the foundation has granted more than $63 million to organizations locally and around the world. YPC member Mary Fishburn, Haven Senior, spoke about her experience at the 2014 grant awards ceremony in March. “I was amazed by how much power had been granted to a group of teenagers,” she said. “For once, adults were asking us for money. We were placed into a position with the opportunity to make a major difference in the lives of youth across Reno County.” philanthropists Sherry Treece with her children, David and Haley Kids and Giving Julie Steen with her children, Lucy, Harris and Maddy 19 “I want early childhood programs to flourish in our community, and the only way that is done is through money. Otherwise you lose those opportunities for children and families.” –Marcia Corey Ensuring 20 During Marcia Corey’s 25+ years at the Reno County Early Education Center, she witnessed the incredible power of getting an early start with special needs children. But funding to build and sustain programs was always being “borrowed” for other things. “I know that the earlier you start, the better kids do in school,” Marcia said. “But we were always unsure of our funding, like with tobacco money that should have created over $1 billion in an endowment specifically for early education programs in Kansas. That money was redirected by the legislature to other projects.” So when she and her husband John were looking to donate to the community, they saw an opportunity to create a stable funding source for Reno County programs for young children. “The Community Foundation helped us outline the priorities for an endowment fund, which gives the Early Education Center director the power to prioritize money for children from birth to five with special needs,” she said. Marcia’s hope is to both reach more children and ensure that current services will still be available generations from now. “I hope we can educate families about the importance of education right at birth with these kiddos. So many times parents think that with newborns, you just love them, feed them and change their diapers. Their brains are growing so fast, especially from birth to three. And that’s the prime time to shape that child.” a strong start in life “We have 2,000 days. From the moment of birth, we as a society and community have 2,000 days. 2,000 days to make or break a child. 2,000 days to help a child walk independently or to make them a product dependent upon society for their existence. 2,000 days, no more….no less.” –Dr. Marilyn Graham Director of Reno County Pre-K, supported by the Kansas Preschool Program Grant Early Childhood Community Leadership: Early Childhood Initiatives “The most critical factor in whether a child will thrive is having a kind, loving parent they trust. It doesn’t matter if that ‘parent’ is biological or not—every child, starting at birth, deserves that important relationship.” –Sharon Hixson SEEK Coordinator Giving children a strong start—from birth—is one of the Foundation’s highest priorities. We make and manage grants that fund activities including social/emotional screening, parenting education and preschool programs. The Reno County Pre-K Program is providing free preschool to 200 four-year-olds who might not otherwise be able to attend. The Social Emotional Excellence for Kids (SEEK) grant is helping young children with social/emotional red flags get help early. Key activities include screenings, training, and coordination of healthcare, early education and mental health providers. The Reno Parents Connect public service campaign is promoting ways to forge a strong parent-child bond from birth to five, connecting parents at RenoParentsConnect.org. 21 Match Days Buhler Community Foundation 22 Fund for Buhler makes sidewalks possible Over the past few years, Buhler and other Reno County communities have taken the advice of healthy living expert Mark Fenton to heart: great sidewalks invite people to be more active. 2013 Milestones Foundation Balance as of Dec. 2013 ....$612,879 Total Gifts Received in 2013 ...............$114,137 Total Grants Disbursed in 2013 .............$16,750 So when Buhler Mayor and Community Foundation board member Daniel Friesen learned that a number of residents could not afford to replace crumbling sidewalks in front of their homes, he asked a men’s group from Buhler Mennonite Brethren Church to volunteer their labor.
