There will be Easter and Mother’s Day brunches to enjoy with your family. The third annual
Castle Classic Car Weekend has been moved to the last weekend in July, and it will include the
same activities – a luncheon and fashion event, the Jazz and Gin Gala and the Sunday exhibit of
classic cars with music, food and family entertainment.

NANO LITTLE
As the Trust finishes one of the most exhilarating years in recent memory, we thank you for your
support and participation in whatever way you provided it.
Thousands have been to the Joslyn Castle for our Consort and Cabaret music series, and the
Bronte literary festival presented by the Joslyn Castle Trust. You might have enjoyed events
co-sponsored by the Trust and Shakespeare on the Green and Brigit St. Brigit. Many more of
you enjoyed Magic at Midtown and the Turkey Trot in Turner Park which were collaborations
between Midtown Crossing and the Trust. And you might have participated in the annual Castle
Classic Car Weekend or the first-ever Trust sponsored trip.
Oscar Wilde will be the subject of this year’s literary festival in July. In October, there will be an
Edgar Allen Poe festival which will include some special “scary” activities. Literary events are a
perfect fit with the development of an Educational Center at the Joslyn Castle. This program includes both cultural activities and building arts training which will focus on preparing craftsmen
for work in specialized construction areas.
Special thanks to the Midtown Crossing staff for all the partnership opportunities they have
offered – Designer Treasures, Architects of Air, a second Turkey Trot and Holiday Magic in
Midtown tour, a tour of neighborhood homes decorated for the holidays by area interior
designers. The Castle and the Brandeis Mansion will be included.
Life at the Castle continues to grow and expand in ways which are appropriate to a fabulous
historic property. It is because of the community support and appreciation for this historic home
that these wonderful events lengthen and thrive. The Trust believes that the Joslyns’ home is
being used in the way the Joslyns intended it to be used, and that they are happy that others
are enjoying it as they did with their friends. We thank you for your appreciation of this special
place and hope that we will see you soon and very often.

ver 100 classic cars and
motorcycles will grace Joslyn
Castle’s 5.5 acre estate for the
Classic Car Show, Sunday, July 29 from
10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Now in its third year, the show is “not your
typical car show put on in a parking lot
with loud 50s music. This is a class act,”
said Jerry Vincentini, Castle Classic Car
Show organizer and a 50-year restorer and
collector of vintage and classic cars. “The
Joslyn show is unique on many levels. The
caliber and number of entries is top notch.”
Besides antique cars, motorcycles and
bicycles from the early 1900s through the
1960s on display, this year’s event will
feature a 1950s hot rod section, a special
interest area and a space for “survivor cars”
or vehicles that have never been touched.
Some of the early highlights this year
include a very rare 1904 Indian motorcycle,
a restored 1934 Harley Davidson and a
1935 Auburn.
The Classic Car Show committee is
accepting entries through July 1 for those
interested in showcasing their vehicle.
There is no entry fee and car owners
enjoy a complimentary tour of area car
collections, a reception the night before and
an appreciation dinner following the event.
Sunday, July 29, 2012
10 am to 4 pm
Chubb Insurance and SilverStone Group
will underwrite the dinner this year.
There is no formal judging at the event;
visitors vote for their favorite cars. “It’s the
‘Peoples Choice Awards’ for cars,” explains
Vincentini, and kids get to do their own
judging at 1 p.m. Awards will be given to
the Best Car and Best Motorcycle as voted
on by those attending.
In addition to viewing the high-end
vehicles, guests can enjoy music, food, kids’
activities and free Castle tours throughout
the day.
Tickets for the Classic Car Show are $10
in advance at area Hy-Vee locations or
available online. Children 12 and under are
free. Parking is available for the Classic Car
show at the Kiewit lot on 38th Street
between Farnam and Harney Streets.

t the end of the 19th Century, a peacock of uncommon brilliance
appeared on the scene of London society. His bold flamboyance
made him a figure of mockery and fascination but his singular
intelligence, wit, sophistication and creativity made him a cultural and
literary legend. Oscar Wilde’s sparkling conversation and brilliant writing
won him a place in history as a beloved “personality” of late 19th Century
London. Conversely his doomed love affair with a young man of an aristocratic family plunged him to the depths of public shame, imprisonment and
devastating forced labor. His colorful, conflicted, dazzling and tragic story
is the subject of Joslyn Castle’s month-long festival: “A Wilde Time at the
Castle: The Witty World of Oscar Wilde”

these wonderful stories through theatre games and storytelling activities.

Holiday Tea
December 7, 2011, at the Castle, the Steering Committee of Friends
of Joslyn Castle hosted a Holiday Tea honoring Sarah’s Circle of Friends
– charter members of Friends, a new support group for the Joslyn
Castle Trust.
Mona Christensen, tea connoisseur poured tea and entertained guests
with information on proper tea etiquette. Details of the tea – tea,
delicious handmade sweets, an assorted array of cups and saucers and
colorful poinsettias and greenery – reflected the way Sarah Joslyn
entertained. Nano Little also informed
the guests of future Castle events. Annette
Huff and Monte Thompson co-chaired
what will be an annual event.
Friends of Joslyn Castle president,
Kathy Wells, joins Mona Christensen,
in presenting holiday tea to the Friends’
membership. The century-old tea service
accompanied member-donated cups
and saucers to set a festive table.

have to alter it every six months.” - Oscar Wilde
Join the Playhouse’s head costumer, Georgiann Regan and counter-cultural fashion icon Laci Neal along with The Western Heritage Museum
and others to indulge in an evening of fabulous Victorian fashion as
they reveal everything from the changing silhouette of fashion during
Oscar’s time to his sartorial influence on his era, the history of dandyism and Victorian style as it is manifested in the modern day. It’s sure to

world, what difference is there between a glass of
absinthe and a sunset.” - Oscar Wilde

“America is the only country that went from barbarism to

silk hose, Oscar Wilde took the stage of Boyd’s Opera House of Omaha,
in 1882, to lecture on aesthetics! Novelist Timothy Schaffert discusses
Wilde’s American tour and its impact on the cities of Omaha and
Lincoln – and how this strange creature appalled not just the newspaper

OFF- SITE EVENTS
“Wilde About The Opera:
Gilbert and Sullivan’s Patience”
Join a cast of distinguished singers at Opera Omaha for an evening of
poetry and song from one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s most irresistibly
delicious operas, Patience. Written as a satire of the aesthetic movement
in England, the opera is packed with lush melodies, brilliant characters,
and charming comedy that has entranced audiences for more than a
century. The literary persona of Oscar Wilde looms large over the story
of Patience, with its stinging satire of late nineteenth-century aesthetic
poets and their rapturous devotees. If you love Gilbert and Sullivan, you
will not want to miss the the chance to see selections from this opera
come to life before your eyes, as we delve into the creation and history
of a lasting musical monument to Oscar Wilde and his times.
“Wilde Women” Art Exhibit at New BLK gallery
“It is through art and art only that we can shield ourselves
from the sordid perils of actual existence.” - Oscar Wilde
Join us for a dynamic evening of art, fashion, and puppet theatre while
enjoying craft cocktails from the absinthe bar. The show will feature
works by ten women artists working in a variety of genres from painting, illustration, photography, and sculpture to performance art and
couture!
“Wilde Rep” Play-Reading Series at the Blue Barn
“Gwendolen, it is a terrible thing for a man to find out
suddenly that all his life he has been speaking nothing
but the truth. Can you forgive me?” - Oscar Wilde, The Importance of
Being Earnest
The Wilde Festival in collaboration with Omaha’s much acclaimed Blue
Barn Theatre will present readings of Wilde’s most iconic play, “The
Importance of Being Earnest” and a play by New York playwright, Rob
Urbinati, “West Moon Street” inspired by Wilde’s novella, “Lord Arthur
Savile’s Crime.” The plays will be read on alternating nights in late
July. Through this series, a company of veteran actors, led by director,
Hughston Walkinshaw, will demonstrate the effervescent wit that made
Wilde a legend!

NEW
Gold Room
FURNITURE
ACQUISITIONS
Very special thanks to John and Kathy Buchanan and Family who have
returned to the Joslyn Castle furniture believed to have belonged to
George and Sarah Joslyn. The set, which was likely once in the Gold
Room, consists of a settee, two chairs and a lovely gold table.
Doug Buchanan of the Renze Display made the original contact with
the Castle. He stated that his great- grandmother Buchanan purchased
the four pieces in a sale designed to help with the war effort. The four
pieces pictured have been in John and Kathy Buchanan’s home in Arizona since the early ‘60s. Doug, his brother Bruce and his sister Mary
wish to loan the furniture to the Castle so that visitors will have a better idea of how the Joslyns lived. “They will gain a better understand-

The Trust extends its warmest appreciation to the Buchanan family
for their thoughtful loan. When you next visit the Castle, please take a
minute to look at the pieces which are on display in the ballroom area.
Murder Mystery
The 2012 Murder Mystery, A Recipe for Death, was held at the
Joslyn Castle on February 24, 25 and 26. We were thrilled to once
again sell out all performances. A Recipe for Death was an original
production written by Colleen Fogarty.
The production revolved around a stolen recipe for Skunk Stew.
The Castle was transformed into a remote country estate complete
with skunk accents. Dinner was provided by Big Mama’s Catering
and Deserts were from Cupcake Island.

Guest performers this year were Mary Maxwell and
Tim Cavanaugh. Special thanks to our Honorary
Chairs: Jim and Jana Rose and Gary and Rose Ann

The Murder Mystery will return in

repainted. Some of the posts and detailed center pieces had to be
recast to match the original. Also, some of the iron fence filigree was
damaged over time and needed to be replaced with new steel that
had to be bent to match the existing pattern. Today, this part of the
fence has been returned to its original glory.
The north and east walls were previously repaired with help from
the Joslyn Castle Trust. The Trust purchased limestone which
came from the original quarry in Silverdale, Kansas. It was cut and
brought to the castle to match the existing wall. A fence was also
added at that time.
This project is a continuation of a cleaning, tuckpointing repair and
sealing of the castle buildings. The entire project has been funded by
a very generous anonymous donor.
