2016 JunPut - Heritage Golf Collection On Hilton Head Island
The
PUTTER
Monthly Publication for the Members of the Port Royal Golf & Racquet Club
President’s Message
You may have noticed in the May edition of
the Putter, a reference to a “new” PRPC
President for the remainder of 2016. That
would be me! My wife, Judy and I have been
residents of Port Royal Plantation and
members of the Club for 20 years. This is my third “shot” at being
the Club’s President - hopefully I will get it right this time.
By the way, how many of you actually know what PRPC stands
for? In the “old days” our club was the Port Royal Plantation Club
and, while our public name changed years ago to the Port Royal
Golf & Racquet Club, you will still see our original name and
initials used by some of us “old timers”!
As I looked back at previous editions of the Putter and studied our
June Calendar of events, I was impressed with the variety of
activities our members are engaged in as part of their
membership. Your Board is constantly looking for additional
opportunities for member involvement and participation in our
Club. If you have an idea for an additional event or activity,
please let one of the Board members hear from you. Speaking of
new events, the Board just hosted our first “Members Cocktail
Party” and 99 of you accepted our invitation to cocktails and
heavy hors d’oeuvres. (Thank you to Wes and Judith Warren for
organizing the event). Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves so
watch the Putter for news of another party in the Fall.
June 2016
Regarding golf at Port Royal, you will be pleased to know that
Heritage has started the cart path paving project on Robber’s
Row. Also, your Course Conditions Committee has again been
proactively working with Heritage on the ever important course
maintenance and conditioning. If you have any comments or
suggestions please feel free to contact any committee member:
John Garnett, Gay Halleman, John Gibbs, Nancy Simpson, Jack
Schrader, and Ed Weinlein.
Speaking of course conditions, last fall your Board worked
closely with Heritage to create a 2016 aerification schedule that
eliminated member play on aerificated greens. Unfortunately
Mother Nature did not cooperate with our plan resulting in a
revised schedule which was announced earlier in an eblast and in
a separate article in this edition of the Putter. Rick Shoemaker
and the Heritage Team have gone beyond “business as usual” to
minimize our exposure to aerated greens in June and on behalf of
the members I applaud their efforts.
Finally, a big Port Royal Plantation Club welcome to new
members: Nigel and Diane Jones, Jeffrey and Bernadette
Gurnham and Tom Wilson. Please be sure to introduce
yourselves to them as they begin to participate in the various club
activities.
Gary Tauscher, President
In conversations with friends and neighbors, I’m reminded that
June not only brings flowers to the Lowcountry; it also means
visitors and guests to our Island and to Port Royal Plantation.
That may be why our End of The Month Mixed Golf Event is
GUEST DAY! Please be sure to sign up and remember, you don’t
have to have a guest in order to participate.
END OF THE MONTH PARTY
Speaking of guests, you might want to include cocktails and
dinner at our Club House in your visit itinerary. Our “hats off” to
Heritage for reintroducing a casual dining/entertainment option
for the membership. For those of you who haven’t tried it yet,
there is live music, bar service, a tapas style menu, and weekly
dining specials available at the Club House Tuesdays through
Fridays during the summer.

Course Conditions
Update
Welcome New Members
As we head in to June and warmer
temperatures are upon us, we are quickly
seeing the affects. Transition of the greens is
happening rapidly as the cooler grasses quickly burn out. Thus,
the dreaded “A” word is at hand – Aerification. Planter’s Row
was done on May 20; Robber’s Row on May 25; and Barony is
scheduled for June 9 and 10. Additionally, we do have a few
greens with significant transition challenges and we will be
sodding some areas on Barony end of May to be ready for June as
well.
For the two days of aerification on Barony, we will reserve
Planter’s Row as the Member Course, as Planter’s will be in good
condition, fully-recovered from its aerification in mid-May. As
Barony reopens, but is still recovering in that first week, we will
move tee times to the public golf courses for the various weekly
Member games:





9 Hole Ladies – Thursday, June 9 and Thursday, June 16
will be on Planter’s Row
Twilight – Friday, June 10 will be on Planter’s Row
Champions Cup – Saturday, June 11 will be on Robber’s
Row
18 Hole Ladies – Tuesday, June 14 will be on Robber’s Row
White Tee Blitz – Tuesday, June 14 will be on Robber’s
Row and Thursday, June 16 on Planter’s Row
During this time, we will move individual tee times on a spaceavailable basis to another course. Please check in with the Golf
Shop on the day of play, and we will be happy to put our
Members in the best possible situation.
Of course, with the warmer temperatures, we are seeing the
Bermuda grasses quickly filling in and the fairways, tees, and
roughs are much healthier. With additional fertilization, traffic
controls, and a little sod for the weaker areas, we will see vast
improvements through June. Other focus areas include the
continued cart path work, bunker edging, and special projects
such as lagoon bank work and some landscaping enhancements.
We appreciate your continued support of the club and we hope
you enjoy a fantastic month of golf in June!
Regarding Robber’s Row cart path work, we are going to
continue work on repaving with #18 and #2 being completed.
We will move to #17 over the next week or two. We appreciate
your patience as we look to improve the courses.
Rick Shoemaker, Director of Operations

Referendum for a
New Beach House
The Landowners of Port Royal Plantation are about to vote in an
historic referendum to fund the rebuilding of the plantation’s
Beach House. The deadline for mailing a ballot is June 24.
While this is a decision to be made by all landowners, it will be a
great benefit to residents who are PRPC club members.
It will provide a significantly improved venue for those club
events that are held at the Beach House. These include a couple
of End of the Month parties that lend themselves to a more
informal format, and such things as pot luck dinners and BYOB
events. But more importantly the proposed new Beach House
will provide a venue for those events that are much larger than
can be accommodated at the Club House or the existing Beach
House.
A new Beach House will a be a great asset for the plantation and
will provide an opportunity for increasing the scale and quality
of the club’s social activities.

Martina Navratilova Trains at Port Royal
Pursuing a ninth and record-breaking
victory at Wimbledon, Martina
Navratilova chose to bypass the
French Open during the summers of
1989 and 1990 to train on the grass
courts of Port Royal Racquet Club.
Accompanied by Billie Jean King and
coach Craig Kardon, Martina trained
twice daily, morning and afternoon,
two hours per session in the South
Carolina heat. She often hit not only
with her coaches but also with our
pros, Dana Landin and Patrick Page, and also with Tommy
Coulton, a hard-hitting topspin player who hit much like her
greatest opponents: Steffi Graf, Monica Seles, and Gabriela
Sabatini. As word of these training sessions leaked, local
spectators would literally come through the woods in large
numbers to enjoy watching. Eventually training times were
altered.

Martina (l) with Tanda, Denny, Paula Gill and Patrick Page
Between the years of 1981 and 1987, Martina had won 17 grand
slam singles events: three Australian Opens, two French Opens,
eight Wimbedons, and four US Opens. Then during 1988 and
1989, she failed to win a grand slam. Her preparation at Port
Royal became important because at 33 years old and with many
great players coming along, it was growing more difficult to win
the big tournaments. Her training paid off, however, because in
July 1990, Martina won her ninth Wimbledon Women’s Singles
Championship by defeating Zina Garrison 6-4, 6-1, breaking
Helen Wills Moody’s record at Wimbledon. This proved to be
her final singles grand slam win. She shares an all-time record
with Billie Jean King, each winning 20 Wimbledon titles for
singles and doubles.

Men’s Golf Committee
Golf Chairman
Member-Guest Days offer wonderful
opportunities to visit with friends, to explore
new courses and to focus on the challenges
of the golf game. A recent visit also sent me
to reading the rule book. . .. again.
My competitor and I hit our tee balls into the right rough. She
claimed the first one found and proceeded to hit it near the green.
We continued to search for mine, and after five minutes I
declared it a lost ball, returned to the tee to play a new ball - loss
of distance with a penalty stroke. Upon the green, we discovered
she had hit my ball. Now what? (Answer below)
June and the lazy days of summer are upon us, offering clear
mornings for the challenge of Barony’s small greens that are so
well protected by unforgiving bunkers. Accuracy, not length,
means practicing skillful touches with the mid and short irons, or
committing to a clinic with the Golf Shop.
It is getting hot out there. Be sure to stay
hydrated on the course by drinking plenty of
water. Speaking of hot, John Gibbs remains
that way retaining his lead in the
Champion’s Cup Race with 58 points ahead
of Don Muehlberger with 51 and Larry Jackson with 50.
The second Super Men’s Day of this year was held on May 11
with the team of John Evans, Jack Schrader, Wes Warren and
Larry Jackson finishing in first at a whopping 28 under par and
four strokes clear of the second place team. Congratulations
guys, way to go. It was another great day for what has become
one of the most popular Men’s Golf events.
I would like to give a shout out to the revamped Course
Condition Committee headed by John Garnett. Their pro-active
approach will help Management understand the member issues
of concern regarding the golf courses which should result in an
improved golfing experience by all.
The Twilights continue to break records for attendance and
enjoyment. After golf or tennis at 4:00 or after a quiet Friday,
come join us for dinner on the veranda at 6:30 - a light dinner
with a light price and a glass of beer (free) promises a fun
evening.
This month, in addition to the day to day golf, there are two
Champion’s Cup events. The first one will be held on Saturday,
June 11 and the second on Wednesday, June 29. Be sure to sign
up early in the golf shop for these events.
The Port Royals are back on Sunday mornings, June 12 and 19.
No registration says this couple’s golf event is open to all couples
on a weekly basis. Sign up is Thursday by 5:00 in the brown
book in the Golf shop.
Ed Harbauer, Men’s Golf Chairman
End of the Month is June 26, a Guest Day Best Ball. Since this is
one of our few guest days, we hope to see many new faces on the
course and afterwards at dinner. Thank you to Larry and Polly
Jackson for volunteering to finish the season as End of the Month
Golf Co-chairs.
Good food is synonymous with Port Royal. We appreciate the 18
Hole Ladies’ Pot Luck on Tuesday, June 7, and the 9 Hole Ladies
T-Time dinner on Tuesday, June 21. Be sure to have your new
gate passes before then.
I thank you for the opportunity to serve you, your comments are
important to me as we build mutual respect among all golfers.
Golf is a great game. Enjoy
Judy Robinson, Golf Chairman
Answer:
My competitor gets a two stroke penalty for hitting the wrong ball
plus the lost ball penalty of stroke and distance. Unfortunately,
I’m also penalized. After searching the legal five minutes, I must
declare my ball lost, return to the tee and hit my third shot. which is not changed by finding my ball later on the green. In my
search, I also learned that a player can be given a one stroke
penalty for giving advice, like pointing out the drop area? Could
make for quieter couple’s golf on Sundays!

May saw us “Putting in Pearls”
with 64 participants for our
annual Member-Guest. What a
special event it was. Thanks to
Sharon Weinlein, Chair, and
her committee of Carole
Howell and Judy Tauscher.
They worked hard and long to
give us this special time to
enjoy camaraderie with our guests and fellow Lady 18s. Monday
night at the Beach House featured many delectables along with
some special libations and a fun chocolate fountain.
Our Ladies Day participation since January has been above 50%
for at least 10 Tuesdays to date. Thanks for all your support.
For many of you the next few months mean traveling for
adventure, to beat the heat, or to gather with family. May your
summer be safe and memorable.
All for now. See you on the Links in September.
Carol Duffin, President
Thanks to Messieurs Duffin, Howell,
Tauscher and Weinlein for their help.
Tuesdays’ golf was extra special thanks to the
efforts of Ben Smith and Aric Zuberbier. A
tip of the cap goes out to Rick Shoemaker,
Director of Operations, for providing us with
some special surprise treats for the day. Our
luncheon was both beautiful and delicious.

The Port Royals
Ladies Nine Hole
Golf Association
THERE
IS
NOTHING
LIKE
THE
LOWCOUNTRY FOR GOLF IN THE
SPRING and the Port Royal nine holers are
enjoying and grateful for every beautiful day. But it's not all we
do. In the splendor of releafing trees and blossoming nature, our
little group has weathered the storm of personal loss, and painful
operations, to support each other in tough times. This is a strong
group of ladies, winners all around, who sometimes win at golf too!
The April 21 Low Putts Tournament was won by JoAnn Gibbs,
with Marilyn Lorenz second. On April 28 we didn't play a
particular game, just had fun encouraging each other to play better
golf.
Our fun Tee Time event on April 19 was hosted by Joan Heller and
Ellie Kyle, with the golfing team of Mac McGahee, Marilyn
Lorenz, Marcia Schwyn, and Sue Huey winning the afternoon
golfing contest. Don Lorenz, Tom Street, JoAnn Gibbs and Tom
Street came in second.
Our two day Ringer Tournament, normally played in February, was
held in May for the first time in a very long time. We are all
grateful for the much better conditions to play our best, and look
forward to finding out the winner at our annual awards banquet in
December.
We played at the exchange at Sun City on May 16, with a number
of us in attendance wearing our new team shirts! It should be noted
that we don't need team shirts to be a team, but we do enjoy
displaying the Port Royal logo all over Beaufort County!
Our Tee Time on May 17 was a Mexican theme, organized by
Marcia Schwyn, Pat Pollak and Jo Ann Gibbs. Unfortunately the
golf was cancelled due to bad weather, so there are no winners to
report this month.
A big THANK YOU to Heritage Golf for the golf lessons they
provide. Everyone can use better technique and more practice to
advantage. The 9 holers enjoyed the clinic on May 25 on
CHIPPING AND PITCHING. We look forward to future clinics.
As always thank you to our wonderful moms of the month. Sue
Huey in April, Pat Pollak in May, with Ellie Kyle hopefully back in
full swing in June.
Safe travels to all who are heading out to graduations, weddings,
summer houses, travels, Spoleto, and all the myriad of things we do
away from Hilton Head Island. Get home to us healthy and happy!
I am writing this for Joan Pruett, who is playing with her 1½ year
old twin grandbabies out on the West Coast. Most of us are jealous,
and want to know when the twins are coming here, so we are able
to play with them also.
Marilyn Lorenz, Vice President

With dismay, regret and sorrow the first play
date for our traditional but abbreviated Port
Royals on Sunday May l5, had just four
players (two couples). As stated in the May
Putter we listed the play dates: June 12
&19, July 11 & 17, August 14 & 21, September 11 and October 16
& 23. The season ending dinner is on November 3, and you just
need to sign up by Thursday for a Sunday game. A $3.00 entry will
be collected from each player and the winning two pairs will
receive a payout immediately following all players returning score
cards.
The Port Royals have been a wonderful way to introduce our new
golfing members to the old and not so old timers. I for one have
met many friends over the years. Upon the return of Judy and John
Robinson, our co-leaders, we wish to have a summer picnic and
continue the tradition that has been a part of our wonderful
community. So please, those of you who are available on the listed
dates, sign up and join us.

Tip of the Month
Midcaps
Our 2015 – 2016 season has come to an end,
with the match at Bear Creek on May 10 being
the final one until the next season begins in
September. Unfortunately we couldn’t field a
team for the last tournament, but we still ended
up in 5th place overall for the season.
The final season scores were:
Moss Creek 42 points
Palmetto Hall 41 points
Country Club of Hilton Head 38.5 points
Indigo Run 38 points
Port Royal 31points
Dolphin Head 30 points
Belfair 16 points
Hampton Hall 15.5 points
Bear Creek 9 points
Our next match is on September 22 at Palmetto Hall, and I hope we
will have as good participation as we have had this season.
Forget your score to shoot
a better score.
After reading that title, I am not talking
about not keeping score and telling your
buddies that you shot 79 today (although that would be much
easier some days!). What I’m talking about is that players play
their best golf when they forget what their score currently is and
focus on the shot in front of them instead.
The best way to forget your score is to write your score down
after the hole and then put the scorecard away. That piece of
paper can’t hit the next shot for you, nor can it replay the shot
you just hit. Put it away and turn your focus to the next shot.
Figure out the goal for that shot and focus on how to
accomplish it.
I now retire from being the main representative for Port Royal and
hand the reins over to Dinny Cuthbertson, with Betsy Papale as her
assistant. Thank you Dinny for all your help this year, I know the
midcaps are in good hands for next season.
Our best golf happens when we keep focusing on the next shot,
time after time. We get into a zone where we focus on hitting
the next shot to the best of our abilities, accepting the result of
our best effort and restarting that process for the next shot. The
next time you play, make that your goal – focus on each shot
and hit it to the best of your abilities. I’ll bet you’ll play some
of your best golf of the year with that type of focus.
Heather Garmston
Ben Smith, Head Golf Professional
Mixed Golf
On April 24 we played our husband and wife
championship matches, sometimes known as
divorce open. The winners were Dave and
Carol Duffin.
May 22 End of the Month was a team

Don & Tammie Blank and Mike & Chris Hall
Larry & Polly Jackson and Tony Berkant & Jolanta Taylor
Well, the month of June means the 2016 US OPEN
