WHY HELP?
In the UK, 10,000 items of clothing are thrown away every 5
minutes. That’s 2 billion items of clothing wasted every year.*
By mixing music, fashion and fun, we’re doing our bit to
save the planet.
Join our campaign to waste less and save 10,000 items
of clothing from landfill.

Get a new look on a budget
Just because your budget is small doesn’t mean you can’t be stylish. But cheap, mass produced clothes aren’t the only
option! Swapping and customising are a great way to get a new look, without the waste.
Get creative with your style
Recycling clothes gives them a new lease of life. You can re-style or alter items to keep them looking fresh. You loved it once
you can love it again.
Great excuse for a party
It’s a brilliant reason to throw a party and you get a new outfit without it costing a penny – get your friends involved and raid
their wardrobes too.
De-clutter your wardrobe
It’s a great opportunity for you to pass on clothes that are cluttering up your wardrobe. Think how much time you’ll save
with less to look through.

HOW YOU
Car Boot Disco is a fashion swap shop with a fun party element. Swap
shops are the perfect opportunity for re-homing unwanted goods and
picking up something new to love.
All you need is mates with unwanted/unloved clothes, some music and you
can make it a big or as small as you like. It could be as simple as getting
a few friends round and doing some swapping at your house, or running
a mini Car Boot Disco in your local youth club, pub, school or uni.

Planning
• Allow plenty of time for planning and get a few helping
hands to assist with running the swap shop
• Give each helper a clear role at the event to help the flow:
setting up the venue, greeting swappers, taking
photographs, sorting items and leftovers or just helping
you clear up
• Decide who you want to invite and start spreading the word
– is the swap shop open to your whole community or is it
just for a small group of friends?
• Decide on where you want to hold your Car Boot Disco. This
could be a cosy gathering at your house or a party a local
pub, youth centre, school, college or uni
Prepare
• T hink about how many items of clothing you want people to
bring. We would suggest that any more than five might get
unmanageable
• Click here to download our Car Boot Disco swing tag
ticket to hand out on entry and mark off as many items as
each person brings. This makes it fair so that people will
walk away with as many items as they come with
• Quality is key. The clothes donated need to be washed and
of a good quality. Ask people to bring items that they like
but won’t wear again and would like to go to a good home
• Set up rails and hangers for clothes. (You can always ask
people to bring their items on hangers). Alternatively, you
can just drape items over furniture
Promote
The more people you tell the more clothes there’ll be for
swapping! You can publicise your event through
a number of ways:
• Click here to download our customisable poster and
distribute locally (remember flypostering is illegal so
always get permission to put up posters)
• S peak to your local newspaper or radio station to let them
know what you are doing and why
• Y ou can set up a Facebook event and invite your friends
• I f you’re holding your Car Boot Disco at college or uni ask
your student bar or union to promote the event
Party
• I t’s not a disco without the music! Prepare a party playlist
of your favourite tunes or you might have a mate with a
band - invite them over to headline your event
• I t’s a good idea to offer drinks and nibbles to your guests,
or you could ask them to bring a bottle and a snack each
– swapping can be thirsty work
Post event
•M
ake sure you know what you will do with any leftover
items. Can they be taken to local charity shop? It might be
a good idea to get a local charity shop on board at the
planning stage to take some of these
If you want to do something on a smaller scale, you could
hold a mini Car Boot Disco at home with friends. Encourage
each of your friends to bring along one of their friends, that
way you will have lots more items to swap. You could even
theme your party whether it’s a uniform swap at school, a
‘Friday night outfit’ swap or simply jeans for jeans.

TOP FIVE CUSTOMISING TIPS
Tailor your trainers
Everyone has an old pair of trainers that they don’t think
should see the light of day again. But are you sure you’ve
thought of all the options. Buzzfeed has come up with 30
ways to customise your converse including, paint-spatting,
doodling or simply re-lacing. Check it out for some inspiration:

It’s not dud if you stud
Studding is a cheap and easy way to customise your clothes.
Want to stud your shirt collar, jeans or converse? Watch this

Bling them, don’t bin them
We love things that sparkle which is why we’re working with
Spanglewear to bling up our wardrobe. Add a few sequins to
jumpers or glitter to shoes to make your wardrobe sparkle:

Patch it, don’t scratch it
Have a rip or hole in your favourite T or jeans? With iron-on
material you don’t even need to have serious sewing skills to
repatch it with scraps. This is a cool idea - add a lace patch
to a ripped jean:

Repair it and wear it
So many people throw away items that could be easily
fixed with a few simple steps. Need to sew a button back
on? Need to fix a zipper? Here’s all the advice you need
from Threadbanger:
