The paper is distributed FREE through its advertisers and selected tourist information centers, but subscriptions are offered at $18 per year, single copy $3. The Country Register Story The Country Register began in Arizona in the fall of 1988 to provide effective and affordable advertising for shops, shows and other experiences enjoyed by a kindred of readership. Since then, the paper has spread to many other areas, all of which are listed below. Look for the paper in your travels. To receive a sample paper from another area, mail $3 in the USA or $4 in Canada to that area's editor. Advertising rates are available upon request. If there is not a paper in your state, and you are interested in publishing a paper, contact the editor of the Arizona paper at (602) 942-8950. The Country Register is available at the shops that advertise and often at other unique locations. We hope you enjoy this bi-monthly publication and let the advertisers know. USA Happy New Year! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season! And I hope 2012 is a wonderful year for you. We’re starting off the year with this issue filled with great recipes, quick tips, some interesting articles, and a Secret Shopper visit to Bridgewater Primitives in Alliance. We are also welcoming several new advertisers to our Country Register family and wish the new shop owners all the best in their new ventures. It’s important that we support these new shops, as well as our other local merchants. The 3/50 Project (shown on page 19) is an effort to save “the brick and mortars our nation is built on” by encouraging us to spend at least $50 in three independently owned stores, helping to save our local economy. It is so important that we all work together to restore our economy. The shops who advertise with us are not only independently owned stores, but also shops whose proprietors are ones who care about each of their customers and who cater to your special needs and requests. As you visit these shops, be sure to mention to them that you saw their ad in the Country Register. Without them, our paper wouldn’t be possible. And without your support, they wouldn’t be there either. So, let’s all work together to get things back to “normal” (whatever that is!) We had fun putting this issue together for you - hope you enjoy it. “Talk” to you in the spring! Arizona: Barbara Floyd, P.O. The main industry at that time was an integrated steel maker that employed just about everybody in the area. But early on in her life, Mary Ann knew she wanted something else for herself so while still in grade school she started doing sketches of rock artists and other popular figures. Mary Ann entered and won her first contest in junior high for designing a poster for “The King and I.” And from then on she never looked back. When Mary Ann lost her sister after a prolonged illness, she set her brushes down and didn't paint again until after her marriage. With the encouragement of her new husband she started painting again and made up for lost time. Now she is back where she wants to be and plans to never set her brushes down again. Some of her current designs include teddy bears, Christmas and sign art. Call 937-652-1157 to advertise your shows & events The Country Register In Your Mailbox? We Can Do That... All involve the moments with my kids and most of these I wouldn’t share with the course manager. We love catching a glimpse of some furtive coyote, wily sneaking along the fairways. Owls and turtles add to our natural finds and always get smiles. We collect golf balls on the course's edge during our late summer walks, always thinking we will have some curbside golf ball sale, but never really carrying out this little marketing plan. A large box of bright yellow balls sits in my garage as I type, probably resting there until a new batch is brought in next spring. My favorite all time golf course day, however, has nothing to do with balls or flat irons. The best part of a golf course happens on those cold winter days when snow and ice have closed the school and the three of us get a stolen day together. Up before the sun has warmed the frozen world, we bundle into so many layers it’s simply hard to move. Scarves, mittens, socks, boots, puffy pants and coats get us into a sweat before we even get out the door. Off we bumble down the street and around the corner carrying our rides along the way. Two Great Shops in One Location Signature Antiques by Karen & Jud Fults The course has created a perfect sledding hill with the carefully groomed grass and manicured shrubs. The maintenance crew would not endorse our adventure, but the cold, white world calms our feelings of trespass. Winter has erased sound and color, creating a sublime stillness. We climb the steep grade to perch above peering over the side. Somehow they convince me to climb aboard the thin sled and we fly down the icy slide. Snow blinding our descent, we speed to the bottom, sliding to a stop. Get up, shake the snow out of hair and limb and climb to the top to do it all again. Perfect. Golf course perfection when the fairways are closed. Mary Zylstra lives in Kennewick, WA, beside a gold course and one of the greatest treats for the family is getting to sled down the fairways in the winter. More than likely, your sewing room has been a busy place for the last couple of months, finishing up those last-minute projects and leaving you no time to clean up after yourself. Many an artist has shut the door to their workspace, leaving no chance that holiday guests will darken that door! Now that the holidays are over, it's time for a re-vamp of that wonderful artistic space. Take stock of any unfinished projects from last year. If you're not going to finish them, find someone who will. Look at those stacks of remnants; are you really going to use them? If not, take them to a school for students to use for sewing projects. What about your machines? Do they need a tune-up or do you need to replace any parts? Do it now before you find yourself on a deadline with a machine that isn't working. Just a few little tweaks to your sewing room will make it all the more inviting and make you ready to jump into that next project! ©Susan Tipsord 2012 We have many local handcrafted items and collectibles from over 30 vendors. The Lily Quilt by Rebecca Grace Collins In 1935 during the darkest days of the depression when jobs and money were as scarce as water in the desert, the hearts of a few missionaryminded women turned to the needs of a certain young woman who worked among the people of China. They prayed to know how to raise money to meet the needs of the missionary, Reba Stewart. It was a difficult time to be giving but as they prayed the idea was born to make a lily quilt. We recently had a Church Reunion where the prized quilt was displayed. Many of the people attending had relatives whose names were on the quilt. It was a special moment for them. Try this fun slumber party idea that will get everyone into the kitchen to help. Ask each person to write their name with permanent marker on a quart-size freezer zip-loc bag. Break 2 eggs into each bag, and add salt, pepper and a little milk. Ask everyone to seal their bag and scramble the contents well. Provide a variety of omelet fillers for everyone to add their own combination. Cooked sausage crumbles, crumbled cooked bacon, chopped onions, chopped peppers, diced tomatoes, sliced mushrooms, and shredded cheeses are all good choices. Katharine Hepburn What Will the New Year Bring? by Susan Tipsord A friend of mine once shared that moving into a new home was so exciting for her because she always wondered what that home would bring - a new baby, a first lost tooth, a school dance, perhaps a graduation? At the time, our children were very young, and all of these things were monumental in our lives. That sentiment has stuck with me through every move we've made since then. We've seen new babies, dance recitals, baseball games, the loss of loved ones, and many little moments we don't remember, but are all a part of our life tapestry. You probably aren't moving, but it IS a New Year; what will this year bring for you? A wedding in the family? A relocation? A new baby or grandbaby? These are things we have no control over. We may fret about them and try to control the details, but these things are going to happen, one way or the other. We're just along for the ride. The inability to control what happens to us can be very stressful if we allow it to be; why not make this your year to go with the flow? Remember that the ride may be smooth at times and bumpy at times; just try to enjoy each experience for what it is. What about the things we CAN control? When our daughter was younger, we gave her a choices stone. It was a small smooth stone that had the word “CHOICES” engraved on it. The purpose of the stone was for her to keep it to remind herself that she always has choices in life. Over the years, I've seen it in pockets, on her dresser, and spilling out of a backpack. I love to see it because it makes me realize that it means something to her, but it always reminds ME that I have choices in life, too. I can choose to be happy. I can choose to be active. I can choose what I want to accomplish on a given day. The choices we make are one of the few things we can control in this life. Keep this in mind as you start your 2012 journey. Choose to do things that will enrich your life. Choose to spend time with friends who support and encourage you. Choose to make a difference in your community. Choose to be as active as possible and live a healthy life. In making good choices for yourself, you are able to better the lives of those around you. I can't think of anything better that the New Year could bring. What are you going to choose today? Susan Tipsord writes from her home in Maryland where she lives with her husband Dan, daughter Allison and son Ryan. Follow these easy steps to guide and assist you in achieving the look you desire: Display in odd numbers: Displaying items in groups of 1, 3 or 5 creates a casual, less staged look. Landscapers plant in groupings of 3, as it is more appealing to the eye. Add soft to hard: Textiles are a simple and great way to soften a display. To add some character to your display, try draping a piece of homespun fabric out of a crock or add a runner underneath a table display. Use different shapes, sizes and colors: Combine shapes and sizes to add interest; play with textures and color combination. Combine functional and decorative items. Use game boards, cutting boards and breadboards as backdrops. Start with these items at the back of your display and work your way forward. Using dark accents on a light background and vice versa is a great way to make your collectibles stand out. Vary heights: By varying the heights of objects, the eye will flow easily around the collection. If the objects are the same size, try placing some of them on risers of different heights. Old books or wooden bowls turned upside down work great to give your items the additional height they may need. Group Like Things Together: Create a bigger impact by grouping like things together. Showcase crocks or a collection of pewter in a cabinet to create an impressive, visual statement. Hang similar items on a pegboard for a uniform, uncluttered look. People will notice your items more if they are displayed in a group rather than scattered throughout a room. West Milton Visit the Specialty Shoppes of West Milton The Hen's Nest 50 N. New Uses for Old Things “Decorating with Antiques” by Kristine Berg Doss Repurpose antiques to create a unique, one-of-a-kind display. Think outside of the box. Can it be used for storage? What can you put in it? A vintage toolbox holds mason jars (left) filled with dried goods such as flour, sugar, coffee, oats and rice. Crocks come in many sizes. Once used for storing food, crocks nowadays can be used to hold towels, magazines or even shoes! A child's chair with a not-so-perfect seat (right) is repurposed as a plant stand. Wooden boxes or crates are ideal for both display and storage. They come in many sizes and shapes, and can be used to store DVDs, books, or video games. Use a small antique bowl or dish to hold bars of soap, Q-tips or cotton balls in your bathroom. Smaller dishes can also be used to hold paperclips, binder clips or rubber bands on your desk. An old ladder makes a perfect plant stand or quilt rack. Try using one in the bathroom for hanging towels. Be creative! But most of all have fun using old items in new, unexpected ways. Let's get this year started! It is time to look back over the past year and make some notes and then move forward with the New Year. This is the perfect time for planning what and where to go with those redecorating ideas for our homes. Maybe we have some unfinished projects still hanging around, or maybe we just never got to it last year. I know we probably have a little of both of those. Sometimes the problem is getting started or the project just seems very daunting. Let's look for ways to make some of those decorating changes in smaller steps. You know the old saying about “How you eat an elephant?” One bite at a time - right? So let's take that redecorating challenge, one bite at a time. As soon as Christmas is past, I am so ready to be done with those Christmas decorations. Put them in a box and get them in the shed, FAST!!! But there is still 3 months of winter left. What to do? Well, some of those snowmen are perfect items to be using to decorate in the winter months. You probably have some out for Christmas. Don't send them to the shed, use them on the mantle, as a table centerpiece, put them by the front door or in the foyer. Add a little nature to them. You know, some great branches or even some evergreen and pinecones will go nicely with them. You could even get a little spray-on snow to add that wintery feel. One of the big items in decorating right now is the lighted twigs, and flowers. That soft glow of an arrangement with lighted twigs is a perfect addition to your winter decorating. Keeping a nice fire going in the fireplace can really add to the atmosphere of your home during the winter months. Candlelight is also very inviting during the drab winter months. Put a few candles around your home. Don't forget the bathroom, which is the perfect spot for a soft candle. What about carrying that snowman theme right into this room as well. I bet you could find a cute set of guest towels with snowmen or twigs, evergreen, and pinecones. Nothing says winter more than a cozy throw. Put one over your favorite chair or sofa. Some quilts also make a wonderful addition to your dining room table. Along with the throw you can think of your pillows and maybe even a nice warm rug to really pull the room together. Feeling cozy during the winter months can be easier than you think and not costly. Just think, it won't be long and winter will be behind you and it will be on to your next decorating project as spring approaches. What room are you planning to redecorate this year? I would love to hear from you. Email me and let me know what your New Year’s plans are for decorating your home. I will put your name in a drawing for a $50 gift certificate from AtHome America®. You can choose something from our catalog to decorate that new room! Happy New Year! 2012 from your friends at Ohio Country Register by Barbara Polston Moving is challenging. Every minute is taken up with some necessary activity. I allowed myself three days to have my new house settled. I promised everyone that my office would be up and running. Every box was unpacked and I was back to work right on schedule. Within a week, my studio space was humming again, and I was able to sew for the first time in months. You'd think I was as happy as a clam. I wouldn't say that I was unhappy or that I was suffering “buyers' remorse” for making this change in my life, but I was certainly sad and depressed. Given to self-analysis, I determined that this unexpected emotional fallout was the result of experiencing an ending. I had been in my previous home for 17 years. My girls grew up there. There are stories about how the hard-boiled egg got on the ceiling and the ketchup on the wall. We celebrated birthdays and holidays aplenty, all witnessed by changing paint colors and the comings and goings of wallpaper. Several pets joined us there; the hamster's final resting place is under the lemon tree in the backyard. Even though my girls are grown and off on their own, the echoes of their presence remained in my old house. The new place, while lovely, was empty and silent. The walls said nothing to me; the air held no memories. The song “Closing Time” by Semisonic has become a graduation anthem of sorts, but it's really about change. The lyrics say, “Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end.” High school ends for college to begin. One year closes at the moment a new one begins. One house is sold and a new one bought to begin a new chapter in life. I'm blessed to have very caring friends. They've come to see my new place and spend time with me here. I've hosted quilting “play dates” and, along with good friends, we've experimented with new quilting tools, made beaded snowflakes, and designed whole cloth quilts. My older daughter has returned home from New York and has spent two weeks with me, sleeping on a sofa bed that I'm sure is not as comfortable as I imagine it should be. She's filled the air with the fragrance of baking cookies. My younger daughter comes every Thursday night to “hang out” with her mom. We've already had two birthday celebrations, Thanksgiving and Christmas here. I'm busy, as my wise friend Jane said, “throwing love at the walls.” Jane assures me that, when I need it, the walls will throw the love back at me. I'm beginning to believe she's right. Happy New Year to my Country Register friends! I hope you had a wonderful holiday season with friends and family. Now it's time to relax and take a moment or two to read your Country Register and make plans to visit shops that peak you know you have been wanting to visit. In every issue of the Country Register there are so many to choose. Be sure to tell the shops that you saw their ad in the Country Register when you visit. It can be a shop in your area or take the day and go out exploring. These shop owners will so appreciate your visit. It lets them know that what they are doing is making an impression on their customers and worthwhile. I decided the other day that I needed to take time regroup and for a few hours get away from the hectic preparations of the holidays. I drove to Alliance to check out Bridgewater Primitives. Primitives have always been my first love and I was blown away when I got there. Bridgewater Primitives has to be on your 2012 list if you enjoy primitives but they have so much to choose from that would fit in any country decor. The atmosphere is perfection. Lights are low, the walls are made to look old and you will see throughout the store wonderful wooden furniture, great small wooden items that they told me they make right there and dolls made by local artisans. Their prices are so real. The Bridgewater crew is so friendly. Primmy the workshop cat is stealth and gets into the showroom and makes herself right at home in displays so be on the lookout for her. I loved the selection of woven fabric spreads for your country bedroom, curtains with that real primitive look, table squares and bed throws just to name a few items that they have in their fabric area. Quilting B’s I fell in love with a 3 drawer push through with a top with sides that flare out which would be perfect for candles or dried herbs from your garden or to hold your collection of old kitchenware. They come in a wonderful assortment of colors. Red, mustard and black is what I saw that day. They have cupboards that are built with extremely interesting details and are priced for your budget. I fell in love with the fireside chairs that were actually quite comfortable and would look great on your hearth. The lighting selections were also great for your primitive home. There was so much to see I had to go around a few times just to be able to take it all in. A full service quilt shop and so much more! Jo Morton Fabric * thimbleberries kansas troubles * Wools * Homespuns flannels * kits & patterns Habersham Wax Pottery * Jim Shore The crew are true Ohio artisans and the displays are over the top. Even if you don't have a primitive home I bet that you would find something that would add just such interesting touches to your kitchen or country porch. Northwest Ohio My family has a hidden winter talent. The way they make hats, gloves, scarves, and mittens disappear makes Houdini look like an amateur. When our hall closet started to look like an orphan mitten farm, it was time to take action! I decided last season that we were going to hang on to our winter accessories and I started the box system. I got a shoe box-size plastic container (check your discount store or dollar store) for each person and put their name on the outside. The boxes get stacked on the shelf in the laundry room, which is the first stop from the garage into the house. Each person's winter accessories go into their own box on the way into the house and that way, we know where they are when we're hurrying out the door. The new system isn't perfect, but our orphan mitten farm is a lot smaller than it used to be! ©Susan Tipsord 2012 11830 US Rt. 127 S. The expectations for Valentine's Day are simple, lighthearted and fun - the makings for the perfect holiday. Making valentines is fun for children and adults alike. Valentines come in many forms. The most popular of course are made of paper and decorated with crayons, markers, stickers and glitter. However, a special cookie or cupcake can be decorated with frosting and sprinkles and delivered to your Valentine. Another popular Valentine idea is flowers or candy. Flowers from your home or garden (if you're lucky enough to live in such a climate!) and homemade candy are always a welcome treat. No matter what you choose to give, remember the special people in your life that would appreciate a little love. Don't limit your giving to the one you love; recognize the people who do nice things for you and the ones who just make you smile. It will make their day! ©Susan Tipsord 2012 - Bettsville -Willard - Bloomville - The Door Mouse A Country Quilt & Gift Shop Over 14,000 Bolts of Cotton Calico, Quilt Books, Patterns & Supplies Many Classes Available - Call for Info New Pre-Cut Progressive Quilt Starting in January - SOUTHERN STARS $12.50 per month for 12 months Hours: Mon, Tues, Thurs 10-5 • Wed 10-8 Fri & Sat 10-5 • Last Sun of Month 12-5 email: [email protected] web: www.thedoormouse.com 419-986-5667 5047 West S. Sound - Play soothing music - or do the opposite and choose the sound of silence to still the mind. Smell - Add essential oils to scent the water and air (see tip on page 25). Touch - Use a loofah after soaking. Wrap yourself in a large, plush towel or robe. Apply an ultra-rich lotion to rehydrate and replenish the skin. Taste - Drink a glass of water after your bath to rehydrate. Consider following it with a cup of chamomile tea. I was enthused about "growing" the starter during the long cold days ahead. For four days I stirred the starter to keep it activated. On the fifth day I added sugar, flour and milk. Then I stirred, stirred, and stirred some more. On the tenth day I divided the mix into five cups: one cup to make a loaf of the bread, one cup to start another cycle and three cups to give away. I convinced one of my daughters and two of my friends to join the friendship bread “adventure.” At the end of the next ten days I found myself in competition with my daughter. Between us we had two loaves of bread, two cups of starter to continue the cycle and six cups to give away; it was a race to see who would reach our family’s friends first. As we tried to share the starter we were met with three different responses: “No way!” “Sweet revenge!” and “Sounds like fun!” (which was my initial reaction.) Several friends didn’t want anything to do with it – not because our friendship had soured, but because they knew the irony of the bread – you can never get rid of it and you soon run out of people to share it with. The second response was from those who took cups of starter with the sole purpose of “tormenting” people. Two individuals said, “Oh good, now we can bug our friends at work with it!” The third response came from those uninitiated in the fine art of Friendship Bread – they joyfully - excitedly even - accepted the cup of starter as if it were liquid gold – it sounded like a terrific idea and what fun to actively participate in helping something “grow” in the long cold months of winter. I smiled sweetly, while thinking, “You have no idea!” The thought of sourdough starter taking over the world didn’t seem so far removed. Where would it end? Believe in yourself! Have faith in your abilities! Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your own powers you cannot be successful or happy. Norman Vincent Peale While “friendship bread” became a burden, the “bread of friendship” is a blessing. We are all blessed, indeed, when we have wonderful friends we can count on to share our joys and our sorrows. The bread of friendship is a blessing we can never have too much of. Friendship bread, on the other hand, you may want to think twice about! Sourdough mix is unaffected by cold temperatures, so I stashed my remaining cup of starter in the freezer. This winter I just may pull it out and start the whole process over again . . . maybe! Judyann Grant, wife, mother of three and grandmother of seven, is an inspirational columnist and the author of numerous books for children and adults. Warming your home doesn't have to involve turning up the thermostat. This winter, try some décor updates to make your home feel warmer: Bring out throws or blankets in warm tones and rearrange your furniture to encourage closeness. ohiocountryregister.com 29 Country Squares buy it sell it find it tell it WHITE PINE BOARDS Curiosity Shoppe Call for Vendors Arts & Crafts 1230 21st31St,& Newark, OH Wholesale MarchN30, April 1, 2012 Ohio based lumber distributor is currently stocking kiln dried White Pine Boards for the pine furniture and craft industry.
