The Country Register Story
The Country Register began in Arizona in the fall of 1988 to provide effective and affordable advertising
for shops, shows and other experiences enjoyed by a kindred of readership. Since then, the paper has
spread to many other areas, all of which are listed below. Look for the paper in your travels. To receive a
sample paper from another area, mail $3 in the USA or $4 in Canada to that area's editor. Advertising rates
are available upon request. If there is not a paper in your state, and you are interested in publishing a paper,
contact the editor of the Arizona paper at (602) 942-8950. The Country Register is available at the shops
that advertise and often at other unique locations. We hope you enjoy this bi-monthly publication and

Hello Everyone!
Well, we made it through another Christmas season! Our family is
blessed with four young grandchildren and Christmas is so wonderful with
them around. The time that we spend together is very special and we are
so thankful that we have our family to share the holidays with. Hope you
took the time to appreciate the “reason for the season” instead of being
overwhelmed with all the hustle and bustle.
Now it’s time for those dreaded resolutions. I haven’t made any yet this
year. I’m just going to try to hang in there and make the best of each day.
With our winter coming in with such a bang this year (yuck!), we’re
planning a couple of nice vacations to warmer places, which is really
making the best of each day!
We’re also going to do some sprucing up around the house this winter.
I’m going to start by visiting some of the shops who advertise with us to
check out the latest trends. We don’t need a big overhaul, just a few small
changes. I’ve got my eye on a couple of advertisements on this issue for
special sales and upcoming events. Hopefully, I’ll be able to pick up the
perfect things for my spruce-up.
I hope you’re all enjoying our Secret Shopper’s columns as much as I am.
I always get excited when we receive her article - she chooses the places to
visit each time and it’s always a surprise to us. The shop owners have
been surprised too! They are unaware of her visits, she’s very anonymous.
And her reviews have always been spot on! She makes it feel as if you’ve
been there, and when you do visit, you think “she was right”.... Check out
this issue’s review of the Hudson Sampler on page 24. Another place on

Karen Olszewski
Karen Olszewski has lived in Chartiers, Pennsylvania for the past 38
years with her husband Tom, and raised two children there.
Art gives Karen an outlet for her creativity. She has always been
interested in some form of art and says that whether it’s a hobby or
business, if you enjoy what you’re doing it’s certainly a pleasure.
Karen started as most artists, making projects
for family and friends. Then she moved into
doing the local craft shows. After working the
shows for a number of years and dealing with
the things that accompany shows, she decided
to try to turn her love of art into a real
business. She connected with representative
firm H2A Inc. who was willing to take a
chance with her and represent her work. That
connection has become a successful 15 year
long friendship/business.
Kim Hoover at H2A Inc. says that Karen
embodies her art and family together. The
sentiments in her cards are her persona. According to Kim, Karen is
very modest and under estimates her talent and the joy it brings to
others who so enjoy her cards and figurines. The demand for the handpainted sign line and other accents by Karen was so incredible H2A had
to cut her line off each year from further sales when they reached her
quota.
The greeting card line “Grace & Glory Greetings” was born to supply
the demand for Karen’s artwork. “Grace & Glory” now features many
artists, including the one that prompted its inception.

Central Ohio
- Marysville - Russells Point Mexican Chicken Soup
1 lb boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut bite-size
2 1/2 Tbsp chili powder
1 1/2 Tbsp flour
1 Tbsp minced garlic
2 tsp olive oil
1 lb sweet potatoes, peeled, cubed 1 tsp dried oregano
1 cup frozen corn
1 yellow pepper, cut bite-size
1 16 oz can kidney beans
1 cup chopped onion
1/2 cup chopped cilantro
2 cups water
1 can (28 oz) diced tomatoes
Coat chicken with flour. Saute 5 min in 1-1/2 tsp oil in a
nonstick Dutch oven. Cook through. Remove chicken. Heat
remaining 1/2 tsp oil. Add sweet potatoes, pepper and onion;
cover & cook 7 min, stirring often, until lightly colored. Add
water, tomatoes, chili powder, garlic, oregano. Reduce heat;
cover and simmer 10 min until vegetables are almost tender.
Add corn and beans; simmer 2 minutes until vegetables are
tender. Remove from heat; stir in cilantro.

Memories in a Jar

I love canning jars; half-pints, pints, quarts,
half-gallon, jelly jars, wide mouth and regular,
quilted jars and blue jars, as well as regular
old clear jars. Recently my son brought home
a box of assorted canning jars. He said, "I got
you a present, Mom." They were just regular
old fruit jars, but I thought of all the different
foods that someone
had preserved in
them over the
years. Or, perhaps
they were used as a
vase for a handful
of wildflowers
brought in behind a
child's back as a love offering for Mom.
Maybe they held fireflies caught on a summer
night and placed in the jar with holes punched
in the lid. Canning jars hold more than food,
they hold memories.

Creative Confessions

“Stranger
than Fiction”
Do you remember the film, “Attack of the Killer Tomatoes”? Written as a spoof
to parody Hitchcock's “The Birds” and the equally frightening “Jaws”, this movie
is memorable in its stranger than fiction genre. (Imagine giant tomatoes wearing earmuffs - stalking innocent women in the neighbourhood, poisoning
people with tomato juice and attacking crowds at a stadium where the victorious
carrot proclaims, “They are gone now.”)
Even if you never caught the original show, you get the picture. Some things are
just stranger than fiction, including chance encounters with real people in
restaurants and motels. Let me tell you about a situation during our recent road
trip that could become the sequel to the Killer Tomatoes. I call it, “Attack of the
Ugly Owner”.
The Location: an idyllic cove on the shores of magnificent Lake Hughwrong.
(Names have been changed to protect the innocent.)
The Scene: a medium sized restaurant boasting a spectacular orange glazed
evening horizon. Standing ready to serve: One stern and stiff owner/manager.
Two eager waitstaff. One frantic chef.
The Crowd: a group of 25 starving cyclists on a long distance tour, requiring
stamina to peddle over colossal hills on a narrow highway. Two husband and
wife teams: Americans exploring for pleasure and Canadians working as
photojournalists on assignment.
Act One: The Canadians choose to eat early (6 pm), leaving time to set up
equipment on the rocky point nearby for a sunset photo shoot at 8:30 pm. They
are coldly greeted by the owner at the entrance, told that the restaurant was prebooked for “cyclists only” and advised to return before 7 pm when the kitchen
closes. The Canadians revert to drinking American beer (a typical Canuck
tradition).
Act Two: The hungry Canadians return at 6:50 pm, only to be told to expect a 30
minute delay. Spotting an empty table, they order wine and simply order salad
and walleye. They notice the American couple also settling in.
An hour passes. The Canadians ask for bread or pickles. No bread, they are told
(almost as a scold); it only comes with the meal. A pickle tray? Of course not.
The American gentleman's red face shows signs of an impending heart attack.
Then surprisingly, the Canadians get lucky when 2 plum-sized buns appear. Both

Act Three: The waiter brings the meal at 8:20 pm. The Caesar salad tastes
better than the oily fish. The sun begins to set, so the photo op is lost. The
Canadians decide that a tip is not appropriate. They sign their bill to their motel
room, and wander to the beach to catch hues of the setting sun. The Americans
join them, wondering if we had all experienced the strangest service ever! The
hearty conversation is interrupted when the phone rings in the Canadians' room.
She answers. The owner asks, “Why didn't you leave a tip?” She says, “bad
service, long wait, terrible food”. The sternness escalates and the owner
challenges her rudely. “No it wasn't. You didn't wait long. Our food is
excellent.” The Canadian hangs up. She never hangs up. It's not Canadian.
This time, it was an automatic reflex.
Act Four: The Canadians sleep well, rising to brilliant sunshine and happy blue
skies. They skip breakfast, and carry on to check out and pay the bill. The angry
looking owner once again demands the tip for last evening's meal. The Canadian
checks the bill; the owner questions his reasoning for reviewing the amount,
implying that the Canadian doesn't trust his math abilities. The Canadian
remarks: “My best tip is get yourself some customer service training!” The
Canadian's hand is on the doorknob when the owner snaps, “Don't ever come
back here, you are not welcome at this establishment!!!” The Canadians agree.
They won't be back.
Act Five: The Canadians and the Americans mosey along on their respective
roadtrips, comparing their stranger than fiction experience during each
subsequent meal along the route. They tip well. Back home, they recite this
remarkable story to relatives and strangers, who unanimously say, “No way!
That's rude! Who would run a business THAT way!”
The End: Watch out for killer tomatoes, Mr. Owner. They may get your last
bottle of ketchup, and then what would you do?

Quiet! Theres a UFO hiding in my stash. Oops, there’s another and
another. UFOs to knitters are unfinished objects which lurk in baskets,
totes, and closets for their day of
finishing. They are just pieces of
knitting. Finishing is detailed
techniques which make those knitting
pieces into unique garments or
afghans.
Yep, knitters are known to
procrastinate for many reasons. (1)
Knitters just don’t like to do the
finishing - the putting together - of the project. Many avoid motif or
panel/strip knitting because of the joining/seaming. (2) A new
fascinating pattern or yarn offers more excitement or challenge. (3)
Life becomes busy, consuming knitting time. (4) The color in the stitch
pattern is a disappointment. (5) Boredom sets in with the stitch pattern
or overall project. (6) Workshops which leave the finishing to at-home
knitting add to the UFO woe.
How can knitters avoid UFOs? (1) When selecting yarn and design
patterns which are right for you and each other, be sure they are what
you want to knit. (2) Be committed to devote your time and interest to
the end. Set deadlines, enroll in a finishing class, or join friends. (3)
Knit a gauge swatch (ugh, I know!) and continue to check gauge as
you knit. Knowing a sweater will fit properly makes for faster knitting
and enjoyment. Some blocking and finishing techniques can correct a
tight or loose gauge. (5) Some find the end of the year and a new year a
clearing out time before the annual spring cleaning, making way for
new projects. A friend confessed she has 12 UFOs from recent years.
They need seaming or buttons sewn on or ends woven in - the very
touches which define the project. Her goal for the new year is
completion of UFOs. (6) If all else fails, visit the professionals at your
local yarn shop to do the finishing for you or to show you the
techniques.
Remain calm but diligent, always keeping in mind that knitters will
never be without a few UFOs. It’s just our nature.

“Ringing in the New Year”
Maybe you are like me, once January 1st hits, I want all my Christmas
decorations to be gone and put away. I can't wait to get the New Year started
on the right foot. One of the areas of my life that I want to get started with
in a new way is always my home. I just have to do something a little
different every year. Now, I am not talking about my entire house, but at
least one area of my home needs a facelift in order to make me feel like I am
truly off and running on the right foot.
This year I started with some window treatments in my home. I know that
may sound like a strange place to start, but let me tell you it can make a huge
difference in how your home feels, just by changing out the window
treatments. Here are a few of the fun things I did that you will find very
affordable and easy. First of all, you must know that my husband and I just
moved into a new home. Would you
believe that every window in the house
had the same off-white panels hanging
in them? I just found that strange and
couldn't wait to make changes. The
budget was a little tight, but here is
how I handled it.
First I had some great chair cushions
for my ladder back chairs at the island
in my kitchen, so I found the same
fabric at the fabric store and made a
quick little topper for the kitchen
window. The cushions were red toile,
so it was easy to find. I was so
excited. Another item that works well
for a window topper in the kitchen are
kitchen towels.
From there I went to the family room windows which are open to the
kitchen. I used the same toile and just sewed a piece to the bottom of plain
off-white panels and also made a curtain tie back. Now I was cooking!!!!
On to the dining room. The off-white panels looked so blah, so I was going
to tie in the family room and kitchen color of red. Hmmm. I found some
great solid red napkins while I was out shopping. My wheels were turning
and when I got home I laid them diagonally across the top of the blah panels.
Now that was pretty cool. A totally different look.

Then I went on to the living room. Now, I wanted this area to look a little
formal. So what would I be able to accomplish here? Well, I stayed with the
off-white color of the panels. This time I added a very pretty table runner
that I found that was the same color of off-white. Actually I found two table
runners. One had a quilted area at each end and the other came to a point at
each end with a tassel hanging at the points. I cut both runners in half. I
added the quilted one to the top of panels going the long way with straight
pins, I then took the other with the tassel and hung it in the middle with the
tassel in the middle. Voila!!! I had a fun and more formal look.
Now you can tell from this that none of these things cost me a ton of money.
I was able to totally change the look of my rooms for just a few dollars in
each room. WOW!!!
So while you are out and about at your favorite Country Register shops, take
a moment to look at table runners and napkins in a new and different way.

I hope you all had a wonderful
Christmas and the New Year finds you
happy and in good health.

It was a crazy December with all of the
snow storms. It reminded me of the winters I remember as a young girl. It
seemed we were always outside sledding, tobogganing and ice skating and
the ground was always covered with snow. You had to stay away from the
neighborhood boy's snow forts or a snowball would come your way.
I was out between storms to do some Christmas shopping and of course the
holiday Country Register was handy in my car. Whenever I am out and have
a little extra time I check and see what country shop in the Country Register
is nearby.
This trip was to the Hudson Sampler Store (even though it still has the old
name of the Country Sampler Store outside.) I remember the old store and
all of the crafters so I was looking forward to seeing the old and the new.

The store did not disappoint. There are 100 crafter booths that had were
great to walk through. I saw a wonderful assortment of different jewelry
including really unique fiber necklaces that were crocheted, light as a
feather and you just flip over your head. You can get any color combination
to match any outfit you have.
There were booths of doll clothes for American Girl to Barbie. There were
primitive crafters and antique cealers from vintage to primitives to beautiful
antique linens. There were a lot of antiques that were used throughout the
store in displays which gave the store a very unique and not that usual gift
shop atmosphere. The handmade primitive dolls made in Ohio were
wonderful and extremely reasonable. There are handmade soaps and jellies,
handmade cards and purses, stained glass and in this one booth really
different layered glass dishes and bowls made by a local Hudson artist.
I saw a new crafter that makes great wooden items for children. My favorite
was the cut out shoe with laces to learn and practice on. There was
something I have not seen elsewhere, the most cleverly made themed tissue
box covers with a pocket for hand sanitizer. There were so many different
ones, from baby's room to powder room.
Then there is the retail side of the Hudson Sampler with a great selection of
Bean Pod Candles, soy beads and burners. And of course my very favorite
local Navarre Ohio artist, Billy Jacobs and the large sofa sized picture of
“The Road Home”. The store had an area of just Billy Jacob's pictures
including his four seasons and nice winter scenes.
The friendly staff greeted me and offered me a cup of coffee as I came in the
front door. I saw lots of dips, soup mixes and flavored Pearl Coffee from
Akron in the center by the coffee pot when I took a moment to relax in their
café area.

When I was checking out the cashiers told me that there were crafters in the
store on most Saturdays demonstrating their crafts and that there is always a
spotlighted Crafter of the Week in the front of the store who offers a special
offering that week.

Repairing and Restoring Old Quilts -by Lenna DeMarco
I never started out intending to repair old quilts. All I wanted was to own them. But,
like so many new collectors, my wallet and my collecting desires didn't quite match up.
The only quilts that seemed to be within my price range usually had holes, stains and
faded or missing fabric. Beautiful once, but not when I found them.
I drooled over the sweet pastel quilts from the 1930s; I longed for the scrappy, boldly
graphic quilts from the 1880s and I simply ached for the stunning red and green
appliqués of the 1850s. With my limited bank account, I knew that most antique quilts
were out of my reach. Short of holding up a gas station, the only way I'd ever afford to
own one was either to reproduce one from new fabric not an appealing thought to
someone who loved antiques or else to fix up one of the old tattered ones.
Back in those days, I certainly wasn't a quilt maker. As a professional dancer and college
dance professor, my sewing skills were limited to creating simple costumes. There had
to be an answer and it came in the form of two women Camille Cognac and Nancy Kirk.
I discovered Cognac's now classic text, Quilt Restoration A Practical Guide, (EPM,
Virginia. 1994) and began trying some of her techniques on my ragged lovelies.
Encouraged by the results, I soon attended Nancy Kirk's quilt restoration workshop. The
reigning queen of quilt restoration, Nancy gave hands-on instruction, which introduced
me to new methods and built both my skills and confidence. After additional workshops
and more practice on what was now my growing collection, I took a deep breath, printed
up some business cards and went after my first clients. The rest, as they say, is history.
Today, six years later, my clients include not only private individuals but also antique
dealers, quilt collectors, local museums and even interior decorators.

The how and why of preserving an antique or vintage quilt is really determined by the
owner and her plans for it. There are three basic approaches. Conservation, a choice
generally chosen by museums and high-end collectors, maintains the quilt at its current
state and employs methods to deter further deterioration. For example, instead of
replacing torn or rotting fabric, a fine netting is appliquéd over the weakened area.
Repair mends broken seams, splits in fabric, small holes and replaces lost fabric. It
repairs the damage from everyday wear and tear and returns the quilt to limited use.
Restoration brings the quilt back to its original appearance, the way the maker created it
and how its owner remembers it.
The vast majority of my clients are owners of a single family quilt, often made by a
grandmother. It's usually a utilitarian quilt, made of scraps, not always created by a
skilled maker, well worn from years of love and use and, always, it holds memories.
Nearly everyone says, “I want it to look like it did when I was little and I'd like to use it
again.” I nod and smile, say “of course” and lay the quilt out to examine it.
The examination is not just an inventory of damage and needed repairs, it's really more
like CSI for quilts. A close look at any quilt can tell the viewer a great many things
about the maker . . . everything from when and where she lived to her economic status
can be seen in the quilt. And the quilt can tell you why it was made and about the life it
has lived. With a little practice, it's easy to become a successful quilt detective.
Many of the quilts I see are sometimes in such a state of deterioration that returning them
to the vision of that childhood memory is, if not impossible, cost prohibitive. Sometimes
the cost of restoring an old quilt is more than its actual worth, and I make sure the owner
knows that.
The condition of the quilt's fabric and its future life are the two key factors that
determine what steps of repair can be taken. If most of the fabric is strong and stable,
repairs are relatively easy and the quilt can continue to wrap you up in its cozy comfort.
But if the fabric is splitting, frayed, worn or missing, it won't hold up to the stress of a
needle and thread and it's time to think about just maintaining the quilt for display or
storage. The questions for the owner become not just, “How do I want it to look?” but
“What can the quilt withstand; what will be its future; how much can I afford; and, most
importantly, what does this quilt mean to me?”
The final decisions vary from client to client, but for the owner of a treasured family
relic, nearly all are made out of love and memory. There was the 65-year-old woman
who brought in a half gone wool signature quilt, dated 1903, that had belonged to her
grandmother. She didn't care what the cost she wanted it completely restored to the way
she remembered it when, as a nine year old child, she slept under it when they came to
take her mother to the hospital.
Or there was the young couple who were insistent that, somehow, the pile of rags, which
had been a quilt the husband's grandmother made for him in college, now be made into
something for their first child. Salvaging what we could, we created a wall hanging for
the new nursery.
Others are more practical and simply choose to stabilize the quilt for display and to
preserve for future generations. Whatever the choice whether it's part of a family's
history, displayed in a museum or intended for a designer's décor quilts are a link to a
woman of the past and, sometimes, are all we have of her.
If you own an old quilt, you own a responsibility to its maker and to future generations to
preserve the work of a single woman whose creation says, “I was here.”

Sight - Close the bathroom door and dim the
lights or light candles.
Sound - Play soothing music - or do the opposite
