What is Recreation?
Recreation is defined as “all those things that a person chooses to do in order to make their leisure time
more interesting, more enjoyable and more personally satisfying.” Recreation includes sports, physical
recreation, artistic, creative, culture, social and intellectual activities.
Why Recreation?

LEISURE SERVICES COMMISSION
VOLUNTEERS
The purpose of the Leisure Services Commission is to advise
and make recommendations to City Council regarding leisure
services and facilities within the City of Yorkton. Members are:
Chairperson Delmar Zwirsky, Margaret Cugnet, Lori Glauser,
Gerry Smysnuik, Tonia Vermette, Todd Haas and Councillor
Larry Pearen, Councillor Les Arnelien (alternate).
Are you ready, willing, and able to volunteer? Are you looking
for a place to donate your talents, energy, and free time? Leisure
Services hosts a variety of programs and special events over the
course of the year that require volunteers in order to be
successful. If you or your organization is interested in
volunteering, please give us a call at 786-1750.
The following sub-commissions report directly to the Leisure
Services Commission:
Ravine Ecological Preserve Sub-Commission
The purpose of the Ravine Ecological Preserve SubCommission is to advise and make recommendations to the
Leisure Services Commission on matters relating to the Ravine
Ecological Preserve. Members include: Rob Kirkness, Randy
Holfeld, Don Harris, Vic Mazier and Geoff Rushowick.
Deer Park Golf Course Advisory Sub-Commission
The purpose of the Deer Park Advisory Sub-Commission is
to advise and make recommendations to the Leisure Services
Commission on matters relating to Deer Park Municipal Golf
Course. Members include: Chairperson Donna Rogers, Ken
Burton, Cliff Trombley, Lynn Ferguson, Art Scherr, Greg Haas,
Don Lemond, and Jim Jeske.

The Program Branch is responsible for planning, co-ordinating and evaluating
total city-wide leisure programs and services. Facilitation and support services
are provided to community groups and associations currently offering programs
and services to the city.
PROMOTIONAL OPPORTUNITIES
Weekly Leisure Reports
Leisure Services has weekly reports on local television.
These programs feature a list of sport, recreation and
cultural programs, dates, times, key details and contacts.
Non-profit community groups and organizations have the
opportunity to promote their programs and special events
FREE OF CHARGE through these weekly programs. CTV
schedules the Leisure Report on Thursdays at Noon and 5:30
p.m. Submissions should be placed with Leisure Services by
noon on Tuesdays.
Leisure Activity Guides
All community groups may submit information to be placed in
the guides at no charge to them (distributed in the Spring and
Fall of each year). Leisure Activity Guides are available at the
following locations throughout the City:

• Tourism Yorkton
• Yorkton Public Library
Advertising can also be purchased through the sales staff at
Yorkton This Week, who are partners in the creation of this
publication.
GRANT PROGRAMS
Saskatchewan Lotteries Community Grant Program
Applications are available at Leisure Services for the
Saskatchewan Lotteries funded grant program. This is open
to all Culture, Recreation and Sport groups to assist with
funding projects and events. There are two deadlines for this
program, April 1 & October 1, 2007. Programs must occur
between April 1, 2007 to March 31, 2008.
Urban Aboriginal Community Grant Program
Open to all non-profit organizations with sport, culture and
recreation programs relating to Aboriginal participation within
the City of Yorkton. Applications are now available. There are
two deadlines for this program, April 1 & October 1, 2007. For
more information call Leisure Services at 786-1750.
PROGRAMS
Loonie Racquetball
This is a drop-in program at the Gloria Hayden Community
Centre for students of all ages to learn about and play the
sport of racquetball in a non-competitive, fun atmosphere.
Staff will provide instruction and supervision.

GHCC Racquet Courts
$1.00/session (includes equipment)
Stepping Out Program
A joint effort between Leisure Services, the Sunrise Health
Region, the Yorkton Chapter of the Diabetes Association, and
the T.O.P.S. Group; this program is an education and exercise
program for people with or at risk of high blood pressure,
abnormal cholesterol, osteoporosis, increased body weight,
or arthritis. Call Physical Activity Program Coordinator Jackie
Hausermann at 621-4434 for more information.
S-CAPE
S-CAPE stands for Summer, Culture, Arts, Physical Activity
Experiences. Participants take part in a variety of sport,
culture and recreational activities both indoors and outdoors.
The highlight of the program is a field trip outside of the city.

The program is located at the Gloria Hayden Community
Centre and the Gallagher Centre Flexihall.
Yorkton In Bloom Competition
For the past 11 years, Leisure Services and the Yorkton &
District Horticultural Society have coordinated and promoted
the Yorkton In Bloom Competition. This is an exciting program
that focuses on beautification of the city. This initiative was
designed to involve the citizens of Yorkton in the challenge of
improving the visual appeal of our city, and to compete for
local awards. Some of the categories include Best Home
Grounds (Front & Back Yard) and Best Vegetable Garden.
Citizens over the age of 75 years are able to compete in the
Golden Bloom Competition.
SPECIAL EVENTS
Party In The Park
Spend an evening in the park listening to local entertainers,
having a hot dog and a drink and just enjoying being
outdoors.

Over 30 sport, culture and recreation groups will be in
attendance promoting their activities and taking registrations
for the upcoming year. Please note that City Wide
Registration will be ONE NIGHT ONLY this year. If your group

Yorkton 125
The City of Yorkton, in celebration of
Yorkton’s 125 years of settlement, has
established a committee to plan local events for 2007. The
committee is requesting the communities’ involvement in
recognizing this historic year. If your organization is planning
something special for Yorkton 125, let us know and we will
include it on our website which will be unveiled in the coming
months. Organizations are also encouraged to utilize the
Yorkton 125 logo (displayed above) when promoting their
special event. Electronic copies of the logo are available on

The Gallagher Centre Water Park opened in September of 2005. The Water
Park features a two-storey waterslide, wave pool with zero depth entry, lazy
river, whirlpool, steam room, sauna, 25-metre lane pool and party room.

PARKS BRANCH
The Parks Branch is responsible for maintenance,
development and supervision of all park areas and outdoor
facility and capital works projects ensuring the provision of
safe, enjoyable and entertaining green spaces and outdoor
facilities. These areas include: urban forest, horticultural
services, cemetery, ball diamonds, outdoor recreation
facilities and grass cutting.
The following parks within the city provide an opportunity for
a variety of activities. For exact locations on the following
spaces please refer to the map in the center of this guide. If
you would like to host a special event or activity in one of the
parks, please contact Leisure Services so that our staff can
prepare the park accordingly. Please call 786-1777 for all
park and sports field bookings.
PASSIVE PARKS
The City of Yorkton has a number of passive parks
throughout the community. These park spaces do not have
any playground or sport equipment and are designed to
enhance the community through the beauty of green space.
Some of the highlights at our passive parks include walking
paths at Logan Green, Shaw Park and Franco Park, an
Arboretum/Dulmage Heritage Site at the Ravine
Ecological Preserve, a mature American Elm Stand at Tupper
Park, and the Botanical Garden located at Logan Green. If
you’re looking for a location for a quiet relaxing escape, then
any of our passive parks are the place for you.
ACTIVE PARKS
Knights of Columbus Park
Located on Circlebrooke Drive, this park has lighting
throughout, permanent benches and walking paths, an
activity hill and tennis courts that are lit until 10:00 p.m.
throughout the summer, playground equipment and a ball
diamond with a backstop.
BMX Park
This is a BMX bike course located east of Columbia School.
Silver Heights Park
Located on Sunset Drive North, this active space is home to
an outdoor rink, playground equipment, a tennis/basketball
surface, spray pool and walking pathways with benches.
Spray pool months of operation (weather permitting) early
June until mid September.
Patrick Park
Located on King Street, this park has horseshoe pits in
addition to picnic tables and benches. A great place to play
some frisbee, disc golf or boot the football around.
Weinmaster Park
This large park space is located on Morrison Drive in Yorkton,
and provides a playground structure, an asphalt pad for
basketball and assorted games, walking pathways, an
activity hill, horseshoe pits and picnic tables and benches.
This park also has water and electricity available.
Heritage Heights Park
Located on McBurney Drive, this park includes 2 tennis
courts and an outdoor rink with lighting until 10:00 p.m.
during respective seasons, a ball diamond with backstop, a
soccer field, and walking pathways.
Jackson Park
This park space offers playground equipment, walking
pathways and a sun shelter. It is located between 2nd and 3rd
Avenue North.
Jaycee Beach
This large recreational area is located on Gladstone Avenue
North and is home to 2 softball diamonds, playground
equipment, and washrooms/change rooms with running
water, beach volleyball area and a picnic area. There is a
newly developed trail on the south side of the lake that
meanders along the shore. There are benches located along
the trail for you to kick up your feet and relax, enjoying the
waterfowl, the fauna or the flora, or it just may be reading your
favorite book. Be sure to take in the trail - Walk, Relax and
Enjoy.
Waterloo Park
Located on Collacott Street East, this open park space
includes walking pathways, playground equipment and picnic
tables.

Ukrainian Pioneer Park
This park area offers walking pathways, playground
equipment and a large soccer/lacrosse playing field. This
park is also home to the Yorkton Horseshoe Club. It is
located between 1st and 3rd Avenue North in Yorkton.
Logan Green
This natural setting park space is home to the Hearts in
Motion Pathway, 6 km of marked trail that is accessible year
round for wildlife watching, hiking, cycling, and cross country
skiing. There is a newly upgraded 2.5 km of crusher reject
surfacing with rest areas along the trail.
Ravine Ecological Preserve
Experience the beauty of nature by hiking the 2.8 kms of
natural trail at this location on Broadway Street West. Be sure
to take in the walk on the Boardwalk and experience the
water under your feet, the many animals and the natural
beauty of the entire area. Remember, leave only your
footprints behind.
Rodney Ridge
Located on Roslyn Avenue, this park has a bowl type
landscape, which is perfect for tobogganing.
Skate Park
The City of Yorkton has purchased new skate park equipment
which was unveiled at the Centennial Skateboard Festival in
September of 2005. The Skatepark will be located in the
southwest corner of the Gallagher Centre Parking Lot in
2007.
City Trailer Park
Located on Appleton Drive, this park is home to a winter
outdoor skating rink.

SOCCER PITCHES
Crossthwaite Fields
Four pitches suitable for soccer, lacrosse and football can
also be played at this park on Mountview Road.
Drake Field
Soccer pitch located within Ukrainian Pioneer Park between
1st and 3rd Avenue North.
Jubilee Park
The city’s main baseball park located on Foster Street has
taken on a major renovation with a painting facelift, the
installation of a concession and bathroom facilities. Yorkton
Minor Baseball has also constructed a batting cage. Jubilee
Ball Park is home to 4 diamonds including 2 senior (one with
grass infield and lights), 1 bantam and 1 pee wee diamond.
Come see the Cardinals soar.
Lions Ball Park
Located west of the Kinsmen Arena on Catherine Street, this
is a competition level softball field with shale infield, and
lights. The field must be booked through Leisure Services.
TENNIS COURTS
WDM Tennis Courts
Four competition level tennis courts are open for use at no
cost to participants. The facility is located west of Kinsmen
Century Field and east of the Western Development
Museum.
Heritage Heights Park, McBurney Drive
Two courts have been recently resurfaced and are
competition level courts. The courts operate under a key
co-op system where users must sign out a key and can keep
that key for the season. Upon return of the key, the user will
be reimbursed the $25.00 key deposit fee. The intention of
this operation is to allow the tennis facility to operate solely as
a tennis facility. We are asking that the users ensure the
facilities’ security by being locked at all times and the users
are the holders of the key. Keys can be signed out at the
Gloria Hayden Community Centre. For more information call

Knights of Columbus, Circlebrooke Drive
Two courts are located at this tennis facility. The courts are lit
until 10:00 p.m. The facility is an open facility with the
intended use to be tennis.
PARKS PROGRAMS
Garden Plots
Located at Logan Green and Jubilee Park. The plots are
available for rental at a rate of $50.00 (GST included) per
year. For more information contact the Leisure Services at
786-1750.
McBurney Field

The Facilities Branch is responsible for the efficient day-today facility operation and maintenance of the following

The Gloria Hayden Community Centre welcomes you. Since
opening in 1999, the centre has become a favorite recreation
spot for Yorkton citizens. The Kinsmen Walking Track is a
140m rubberized indoor track that is convenient and removed
from the elements for walkers and joggers. The centre also
features two racquet courts that can be converted for
racquetball, squash, handball, wallyball and aerobics. The
Gymnasium at the centre is home to several leisure programs
and community user groups throughout the winter months.

The Kinsmen Arena was built in 1972 and provides indoor ice
from September 1 to April 30 each season. The arena is a
smoke free building which features four dressing rooms, a
meeting room (identified as the Blue Room), the Yorkton
Minor Hockey Association office, a storage room and a full
concession operation. This facility is available for rent during
both the summer and winter seasons. Ice time is available
from September to April of each year and select times are
available to rent for single use or regular bookings. Rental
rates for one hour of ice time is $105.00 (GST included).

celebrating the life of a loved one.
The City of Yorkton Cemetery is located at the corner of King Street
and Highway #9. A good selection of burial plots are available to
purchase. Pre-need burial sites can be purchased through local
funeral homes or through the Leisure Services Office at City Hall.

Chapter exists to raise funds in support of Kids Help
Phone to create awareness of Kids Help Phone and its

Student Ambassador program. The local Chapter hosts a

Troyanda Ukrainian Dance Ensemble exists to provide an
opportunity for the youth and adults of the community to
express themselves through Ukrainian dance and to
develop an appreciation for one of the most beautiful of
Ukrainian traditions.
Dancers with Troyanda will:
1) be trained in the proper techniques of Ukrainian dance;
2) enhance their physical fitness levels;
3) develop skills in teamwork as they work together to
deliver a performance;
4) enhance levels of self-confidence by performing for
audiences;
5) develop friendships with fellow dancers; and
6) gain an appreciation for the diversity of Ukrainian
culture.
Troyanda Ukrainian Dance Ensemble was registered in
1981, but has been active as a dance troupe since the
1960’s. Troyanda is a self governing, non-profit
organization under the umbrella of the Holy
Transfiguration Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Yorkton.

Being a member of Yeti TKD allows students to compete
with many different martial artists in Western Canada and
the United States. Yeti TKD hosts it’s own annual open
martial arts tournament - Abominable Snow Slam usually in March. Our school also is invited to countless

The Yorkton Cardinals baseball team completed a successful season in 2006 and is looking forward to its sixth
season in the Western Major Baseball League (WMBL) in
2007. The WMBL is a premier wood bat collegiate league,
providing entertaining summer baseball of a high calibre
to baseball fans in Yorkton and area. The League is comprised of eleven teams - Lethbridge, Medicine Hat,
Okotoks (formerly Calgary), Moose Jaw, Swift Current,
Melville, Weyburn, Saskatoon, Regina, St. Albert (formerly Edmonton) and Yorkton. The mandate of each team is to
improve the local baseball climate and provide local skilled
ballplayers, particularly those playing baseball on the college level, to play at home. It also provides an opportunity
for young players at the minor and junior level to move up
the system. To augment the local talent pool, the League
allows our team twelve U.S. College players along with
out-of-province players for a total roster of about 25 players.
Our organization, the Yorkton Cardinals, feels that in 2006
we met our commitment both to the League and the local
baseball enthusiasts by attracting some highly skilled players and providing a high calibre of ball. We experienced
excellent support from volunteers, sponsors, fans, the
media and the City of Yorkton. We feel that we have
increased the visibility of our City, provided economic spinoffs to our local businesses and greatly enhanced interest
in baseball in our community and surrounding area. We
are looking forward to another successful season in 2007
and providing our fans with entertaining summer baseball.
All home games are played on Diamond #1 at Jubilee
Park. Evening games commence at 7:00 p.m.

The Yorkton Short Film and Video Festival, now in its 60th
year, takes place this May 24- 27, 2007, and is the longest
running festival of its kind in Canada. Over the years the
festival has garnered an esteemed reputation as one of
the country’s top film and video festivals. The Festival
includes films and activities for all ages.
YSFVF Film Club
The YSFVF Film Club is for youth interested in learning
about filmmaking, getting hands-on experience with film
and video equipment and making their own films. The Club
