Painted Hand Casino wants to entertain
By DEVIN WILGER
N-R Writer
It’s not easy to be the number one entertainment
destination in Yorkton, and the Painted Hand Casino
has been striving to stay at that top spot for the last
eighteen years. The 43,000 square foot facility has gaming, a restaurant and snack bar, and the Parkland
Room for events, concerts and celebrations.
Angus Vincent, Advertising Coordinator with the
Casino says that their goal is to respond to what people
want, whether they’re regular patrons or people just
passing through, with promotions, events and entertainment for everyone from long time visitors to tourists passing through town.
“We always like to have something going on, whether
it’s a simple thing like you can come in, swipe and have
a game to play on the kiosk, or coming in on a Tuesday
to a slot tournament to take part in, different events
like that. Maybe taking in a band on Wednesday nights
or a DJ on Tuesday nights.”
Entertainment is the goal, and part of that is bringing in different musicians who are touring the country.
Vincent says that they want to bring in what people
enjoy, and they respond to what people have raved
about in the past and want to see again. Country music
has been a big draw for many of the casino patrons, and
that means they know acts like Charlie Major, coming
on November 24, are going to be something people

respond to and want to see.
It’s not about just picking what they know will work,
but also trying to find acts that they think there’s a
desire to see in the community, especially among new
visitors. He notes that when they brought in Default a
few years ago, they sold out a couple days before the
show and the room was filled with people who Vincent
had never seen inside the casino, and that means it’s
not only a great night out for the people attending the
concert, but they also have the chance to see everything
the casino has to offer.
The mix of what’s reliable and what’s new applies to
the gaming floor itself, which houses 240 slot machines
and 7 live table games. That is also always changing,
bringing in new games and keeping old favorites to
keep the floor fresh and interesting to players. Even
working at the casino, Vincent says he’s sometimes
surprised by what he sees on the floor, and that this
keeps it interesting for patrons.
“When things are stagnant, that’s when they fall off
the radar, so you have to keep things fresh and keep
things exciting.”
The goal for the Painted Hand is to provide entertainment, however people want to be entertained is up
to them. Vincent says they like to see people flow from
events in the Parkland Room, to the gaming floor, to the
restaurant, and enjoy all the things in the casino.
“I want to go out and be entertained, be entertained
with the gaming floor, in combination with the restaurant, in combination with whoever is playing.”
They also strive for a welcoming atmosphere, whether someone visits regularly or is in the casino for the
first time. Vincent says that they strive to create a family atmosphere, and it’s something he has seen first

hand as he has become friends with patrons and more
involved in their lives. In his case, after spending some
time going back to school, he notes that coming back to
work a lot of time has been spent catching up with
patrons who he says have become like family to himself
and the rest of the staff.
“It’s a really close knit environment and we really
like it. You really grow close to the patrons.”
They also want to be good neighbours. The location is
across the street from the Gallagher Center, and
Vincent says they enjoy a good relationship and enjoy
the many opportunities for partnership they have had
over the years. Together, they have made the western
end of Yorkton the place to go for entertainment in the
city.

Grand Slam of Curling
By DEVIN WILGER
N-R Writer
The Grand Slam of Curling brings the best curling teams
from around the world to compete in five
different tournaments in Canada. The
second of those tournaments, The
Canadian Open, will be taking place in
Yorkton on December 9-14.
Gerry Adam, organizer of the event,
says that this will be the top caliber of
curling, with the top sixteen teams in the
world getting invitations to compete in
the event. While the teams are not yet
known, Adam expects Canadian curling
greats Jennifer Jones, Glenn Howard and Mike McEwan,
as well as some of the European teams like Thomas Ulsrud
out of Norway and David Murdoch out of Scotland. This is
going to be a world class curling event, and Adam says that
the level of competition is going to be at the top of the world
rankings.
“It’s going to be such a good field for the people coming
out.”
Part of the goal of the event is to take curling in Yorkton
to the next level, and get new people involved in the sport.
He says that people like Jennifer Jones and Brad Jacobs
are Olympic champions, but also regular people, and he
says that they will inspire a younger generation to get into
curling and see what it takes to play the sport on the world
stage. He expects that after the event, people will see how
much fun the game is, and that they will
see more people trying it out at the local
rink.
One difference between the curling that
regularly takes place in the city and the
Grand Slam is that the event will take
place in the Farrell Agencies Arena, in
order to allow for more seating. Adam
says that Mark Schurek of Winnipeg is
doing the ice for the event, and he’s done
this hundreds of times before, and will
make sure that even in a different location, the ice is at a
world standard for the curlers coming in.
The event will be aired on Sportsnet, and Adam says
that this is going to be a chance to showcase Yorkton and
what is happening in the city. Adam says that it’s going to
be a good thing for the entire city, as it will bring in crowds
using all of the city’s services as well as watching the elitelevel curling.
Tickets are currently available through Ticketmaster.
Over 400 tickets have already been sold, Adam says, so he
encourages people to get tickets as soon as possible.

Take a walking tour through Yorkton's past
A walk in the winter can be an exhilarating way to
experience Yorkton.
There are several defined walking tours in the city
which are a great way to connect to the Yorkton’s past,
as well as allowing visitors to exercise at their own
pace.
The local walking tours include;
Heritage Walking Tour
Often the history of a community can only be found
in dusty book and by looking at faded photos. But the
history of Yorkton is alive and well in the form of a selfguided walking tour. The tour begins at the Godfrey
Dean Cultural Centre on Smith Street and ends at 29
Myrtle Avenue. If you proceed at a leisurely pace, the
walk will take about an hour and a half. For a brochure
on the tour, contact Tourism Yorkton by calling 7838707.
City Cemetery
Walking Tour
A self-guided walking tour of the City of Yorkton
Cemetery gives visitors a chance to experience the
unique history of the area.
It guides visitors along the pathways of this beautifully treed 10.5 acres, a book containing 28 sites has
been prepared and can be purchased for $3. The complete tour will take about one hour and a half, but can
be shortened. Stroll at your leisure, as you follow the
trail outlines on the book’s map. There are benches at
various locations in the cemetery where a visitor can
rest.
On the tour you will meet many of the early pioneers,
and some of the more contemporary figures of Yorkton
and area; all interesting and colourful personalities. In
the process, much of the region’s history will be
revealed.
Yorkton’s Public Art
Walking Tour
Enjoy exploring Yorkton! You’re invited to follow a
special guide through downtown parks and around historic sites. In public places and hidden spaces you will
find Yorkton is a city filled with art. This guide will also
lead you to special exhibition spaces where unexpected
treasures await you each time you visit. To obtain your
guide and/or further details, contact Tourism Yorkton
at 783-8707.
The city is also connected to the country’s longest
recreational trail – The Trans Canada Trail.
An 18,000-kilometre recreational corridor winding
its way through every province and territory – the
Trans Canada Trail links over 800 communities along
its route.
Walking is “… a really great way to see the area, to
enjoy what we have to offer and to get some physical
activity at the same time,” points out Randy Goulden,
manager of Tourism Yorkton.
Visit www.tourismyorkton.com or stop by the Tourism
office for additional walking trail opportunities.

Surreal Saskatchewan
Group exhibition
November-December 2014
Surreal Saskatchewan is a group exhibition that
presents an alternative vision of life on the prairies.
Unnerving and often unexpected this exhibition reflects
the uneasy life of those who make their home in
Saskatchewan. Monique Blom, Trea Jensen, Vlade
Marasovic, Sharon Strand Sigfuson, Jean E. Sonmor,
and Leesa Streifler have created paintings that transport the viewer into alternative dream-like worlds.
Worlds where prehistoric skeletal step-bison roam the
plains, menacing jesters torment, rainbow hills emerge
from still waters, children and women transform into
animals, and life cycles into death. Every picture tells a
story and nothing is as it seems.

Cross Country Skiing during winter
In a land blanketed with snow for months each year,
cross skiing is a great way to still enjoy the outdoors in
winter.
And in Yorkton there are some fine cross country ski
trails awaiting enthusiasts.
The Yorkton Cross Country Ski Club sets approximately 10 kilometres of trails at Deer Park. The trails
are set in both classic and skate style grooming, and
volunteers groom the trails on a regular basis or as
needed.
The trails vary from fairly level to rolling hills and
wind along the tree line and spruce groves.
When events are held amenities are close at hand too
with access to the club house to host events and house
ski equipment.
Newcomers to the activity can get a little help as
well, with the club having sets of skies to rent to nonmembers.
The trails are open and free for all to ski but membership is encouraged to help maintain the equipment
and trails.
The club meets on a weekly basis for night skiing,
but other than special events most ski whenever they
wish to.

Snowboarding
on Rodney Ridge
Snowboarding has become an increasingly popular
winter activity, and locally the City has created a venue
for enthusiasts.
In 2014 Yorkton Council gave its approval for a
snowboard hill in the city on Rodney Ridge which is
located on Roslyn Avenue.
The hill came about because of local interest.
"Over the last number of years, Administration had
discussions with community members about the development of a snowboard hill somewhere in the City,"
said Darcy McLeod, Director of Community
Development, Parks & Recreation with the City.
"In the fall of 2013, the discussion turned to Rodney
Ridge as there is a natural slope that could be used on
the north end of the Park. An inactive reservoir from
the old water tower is located in this same spot so
Environmental Services was consulted. The result is
that no equipment heavier than a bobcat would be permitted on the slope for maintenance and a snow fence
or reflective markings will be required to separate an
area where a valve for the reservoir still exists."
The hill has since been developed with local user
input, and the hill becomes operational once sufficient
snow has fallen.

Award winning groomed snowmobile trails
Snowmobiling
re mains a popular winter
pastime for many, and
in the Yorkton area
there is a network of
groomed trails to enjoy.
The Yorkton SnoRiders Snowmobile Club
currently operates about
550
kilometres
of
groomed snowmobile
trails around the City of
Yorkton.
The trails, which
extend for a good distance in all directions,
traverse some of the
most beautiful, pristine
back country in the
area, offering safe and
scenic trail riding.
The award winning
trails, which have been
written up in several
snowmobile magazines,
offer varying degrees of
challenge to snowmobilers. One feature of the
trail system is the signage which is posted
every winter, directing
trail traffic and generally helping to keep the
system safe and comfortable for all.
A number of shelters
along the trail system
in the Yorkton area provide rest stops and social
gathering places along
the route.
One, Eagle Peak,
some seven kilometres
out of Yorkton, is a
multi-use facility with a
toboggan hill and cooking facilities in addition
to
the
snowmobile
trails.
The Sno-Riders were
the first club in the
province to negotiate a
unique agreement with
the City of Yorkton,
which permits the operation of snowmobiles
within defined areas of
the city.
Trails lead around
and into the City. Riders
are able to access most
of the major hotels and
restaurants, most fuel
stops and Yorkton’s recreation complex, the
Gallagher Centre.

performances;
Eclipse — Tuesday,

p.m. — Eclipse is an exciting and vibrant musical experience that showcases the very best of
Saskatoon’s
musicians,
arrangers and performers. Eclipse presents a
stunning 30 voice ensemble, accompanied by
some of Saskatoon’s finest musicians and led by
artistic director Roy Sydiaha, with Wes Froese
on keyboard. Vocalists
are drawn from the community, with a broad and
varied background in musical training. From shimmering jazz harmonies
and grooving rhythm, to
inspiring gospel, Eclipse
creates a joyful musical
spectacular. It’s a musical
event you won’t want to

cians.
Prairie Debut Presents: Ensemble Caprice, Baroque Quintet
— Tuesday January 27,
2015, 7:30 p.m. — Under
the artistic direction of
Matthias Maute and Sophie Larivière, Ensemble
Caprice is renowned for
its innovative interpretations of baroque music and
has received national and
international acclaim for
more than twenty years.
The New York Times featured them in a lengthy
article, praising them as
“imaginative, even powerful, and the playing is topflight”. Ensemble Caprice
performs regularly in
Europe, in the USA, and
also toured in Israel and
Taiwan. In Canada, they
are invited regularly in
most prestigious festivals
and concert series across
the country. Their CD,
Gloria! Vivaldi’s Angels
won Canada’s prestigious
2009 JUNO Award. It is
Salsa Baroque (Analekta,
2010), the most popular
of all their CDs, which is
the program they will be
bringing to your communities in the 2014/15 season. Salsa Baroque is the
music of Latin America
and Spain in the sixteenth
and seventeenth centuries. Gems from this spectacular musical era will
be performed on instruments that were common
at the time: flutes and recorders, baroque guitar,
violoncello and various
percussion instruments.
Royal Wood — Sunday, February 22, 2015,
7:30 p.m. — Royal Wood
will perform songs from
his catalogue of critically
acclaimed albums including fan favorites - Juliet, The Lady in White,
The Thick Of It and The
Glory. Royal has toured
Canada extensively and
has become a charming
and seasoned performer
whether in a solo, trio or
full band configuration.
Royal Wood’s career has
been established with
critical acclaim and impressive musical achievements. His latest release

Top 25 charts in Canada
and was recently nominated for “Adult Alterna-
tive Album of the Year”
at the 2013 Juno Awards.

Ballet Jorgen Canada — Cinderella, Tuesday, March 10, 2015, 7:30
p.m. — This ballet by
Bengt Jorgen is an innovative take on the classic
fairy tale. Jorgen’s choreography balances the
fairy tale elements of the
story with a contemporary
treatment of Cinderella
and her family relationships. Returning to the
original Russian tradition
of having women perform
the roles of the stepsisters, Jorgen builds a more
realistic and human look
at Cinderella and her
circumstances, and then
uses these scenes to both
counterpoint and highlight the magical aspects
of the story.
