Intro. Elections are always a trying time for the Nation where lines are drawn up and people stand more openly divided than usual. Party lines become strengthened and voters become all the more opinionated along which candidate is the answer to the Nations problems, who will fix what the last President screwed up, supposedly and depending on which party one supports. Truth is buried and slander against the opposing party and even brutal attacks against opponents within one’s own party become the norm. That sort of behavior has become standard place and expected, however, there are some small differences which make the 2016 election standout. The two primary candidates face some major Source: Conservative Read. Source: Aljazera challenges that most candidates in their positions year. The two main candidates are now certainly Hillary have not. Rodham-Clinton and Donald One candidate is disliked by the Trump, Democrat and major party heads and the other Republican respectively. This is turning out to be quite the election year, not only have the normal slandering between candidates and speeches concerning just how wrong the other party pinions and dogma are, but there is whole other aspect which has evolved this There are aspects of both candidates which may make many a little uncertain. Clinton Background. To begin with let’s take a look at Hillary Clinton. She actually has a rather impressive resume. She graduated from Yale with a J.D. and had an impressive career as an attorney working as a congressional counsel and later making partner at the Rose Law Firm. She also co-founded the Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families. She was the First Lady of Arkansas and later the First Lady of the United States. She had several pitfalls including having to testify before a Federal Grand Jury in 1996 regarding the Whitewater incident. Yet she came out without having any charges leveled against her. In 2000 she was elected as a U.S. senator representing New York, the first female ever to obtain that status in New York. Her voting record indicated initial support for the war in Afghanistan. continued below Hillary, Trump, and the White House continued from above how unique a candidate she is for the 2016 election. But first, let’s examine Mr. Donald Trump and get some background on him. Source: Travel and Leisure Source: Wikipedia She then was appointed Secretary of State from 20092013. She was blamed for some of the lack of security that assisted in the Benghazi attack in 2012, though she did accept some of the blame for the security lapses she advised she had no direct responsibility for the direct security of the facility. While that may be true there were some other issues with the reaction, or lack thereof, in support of the operatives on the ground that has haunted her with negative views, due to her station as the Secretary of State at the time. Whether she deserves any blame is not the concern of this essay. There are several positives to this candidate and she certainly has earned the respect of many for her accomplishments. Trump Background. Donald Trump is a name most everyone knows. He has gained fame and infamy to a degree for his show on NBC, The Apprentice, which aired from 2004-2015. He is well known for the phrase “You’re Fired”, coined on the show and quickly seen as his catchphrase of sorts. He has created a large business empire based off of his father's real estate business, which has now grown into The Trump Organization. He is among Forbes 500 wealthiest billionaires. Though he does not rank anywhere near the top, there is some very interesting speculation about his actual work which may put him much lower than he claims, which what he claims is several billion higher than the Forbes estimate as it is. However, there are some Though he has had a lot of success, even if his net worth issues which call to light just and income are lower than claimed, but he has also had numerous failings, some of them catastrophic. Clinton and Trump Issues. Now that some backstory has been given to the candidates, it will now be possible to examine some of their interesting quirks which make them so unique as far as candidates go this election. personal email, according to the BBC Colin Powell, Jeb Bush and many others, nearly 33% according to one poll, have used personal email for government business. Though many of those were used under the less strict guidelines were put in place ten moths into her term as Secretary of State. The issue with her’s specifically lies in not only her failure to abide by the laws in place, which FBI Director Comey has stated that she was “extremely careless” in her use of personal email. Hillary Clinton has been under some fairly strong fire concerning her use of a homebased server which she used to set up her own email address, [email protected]. Though the director advised that there were no criminal charged which would be filed, he believed that no prosecutor would take the issue to case. Which is all fine and dandy (who wouldn’t want their very own email?), that is until it was brought to light that she used her personal email for government correspondence. According to a BBC article, Mrs. Clinton stated that she had sent no classified information via her email, and only one email to a oreign party at the UK. Now she is not the first government official to use their continued pg. 3b Page 3 Issue 1 Presidential Nominee Hillary Bucks the Governor's Mandate continued from front July on record: Jacksonville Beach, Daytona Beach, Orlando, Lakeland, Melbourne, Tampa and Fort Lauderdale," Writes Brian Donegan from Weather.com. A known hacker in custody, one responsible for hacking the US government, claimed that he had accessed her email, though the FBI advised they could not find any proof of the supposed incident. However, it was stated that Clinton’s email server was susceptible to hackers and the security software was far from government grade. The State Department is conducting their own investigation which may determine if she perjured herself by denying she used the email to the extent it had. Consequences would be administrative including denial of secret level clearance, which could be an issue for the President of the United States. That Hilary Clinton actually intended wrongdoing is unlikely, however, she did another and then denying he ever held the original view. Donald Trump quite simply put is a bully, he may not have the issues that Hilary Clinton does with the email and Benghazi, but he has his own issues. Including his unwillingness to show his tax forms which may actually show a significantly lower net worth than what he claims. He is in a suit against the country of Scotland, yes the country, over a golf course and resort. He is also well known for changing his stance on the political scene, going from one view to There have also been times when he has made massive promices which hold internation consequences such as stating that a wall will be built with Mexico paying. Conclusion In reality it will come down to whichever candidate gains enough support. November will tell which of these two unique individuals will begin 2017 as the next President of the United States. Volusia County Adopts Mandatory Uniform Policy A rise in fashion and dress code violations have become an issue in schools across the nation. To combat this problem, on March 29, 2016 Volusia County School Board members voted 4-1 to adopt a uniform dress policy. Lawmakers believe that school uniforms will not only help to enhance campus safety but also allow students to focus on academics rather than distractions like fashion. Volusia County School Board Chairwoman Linda Costello said “It’s been Starting August 2016 three or four years since students attending school in Volusia County the idea was initially considered...I think it will will be required to wear save parents money.” collared polo or buttondown shirts color Ms. Costello also states specific to their school “Teachers are tired of along with a variety of being the clothing bottom choices, police... the bottom line including blue jeans. is that students go to school to learn and it’s stealing valuable learning time!” Many educators, like Costello, see no downside to the uniform policy. Select schools have scheduled “dress down” days which will allow the students 1 day of the week without uniforms. Teachers, parents, caregivers, and politicians across the county have their opinions about the changes. But what do parents think? In a recent article written by Dave McDaniel of WESH 2 News many parents are happy the policy is in place because it removes the need to spend more on clothes. of kids who want to become fashion designers, or something similar. Their creative abilities will be endangered. Parents also feel it will cut down on bullying, violence, gang affiliations, save families money, and also reduce the day to day clothing hassle of getting ready for school. This policy also violates their freedom of expression!” Opponents to the idea say the school uniforms violate students’ rights to express their individuality. A local father, Joshua Grier, agrees with this. He thinks that school uniforms are a bad idea and that they will remove the individualism that kids express with items like clothing. “I think that over time it will affect the dreams Some opponents also feel that students will adapt to the policy and then find another way to express individuality, which will only worsen the socioeconomic disparities in which the Florida Lawmakers are attempting to neutralize. Scott Sutherland and Mario Picazo seem to disagree, "We know from past El Niño and La Niña experiences, that when this relay between ¨Niños¨ happens during the summer months, smack in the middle of Atlantic hurricane season, anything can happen. If we take a look at the 199798 El Niño (one of the strongest on record and similar to the 2015-16 El Niño) which was followed by La Niña in summer, we find that the hurricane season that year was enhanced," Jeanne and Karl — moving across the Atlantic at the at the same time. That was the first time such an event occurred in the 20th century." (MacMath, 2016) Unfortunately, thanks to global warming, it probably won't be the last. Photo Source: https://www.theweathernetwork.com Anyone remember 1998? That was the last time we had had weather conditions similar to those we've experienced in 2015 –16. " We may not be following the exact timing of 1998 but the strong La Nina in '98 made for record breaking tropical activity. It was the deadliest Atlantic hurricane season in over 200 years. Over 11,000 people were killed, most of them due to flooding in Central America from Hurricane Mitch. There were a total of 14 tropical systems, and on September 25, there were four Florida's Changing Climate coast should be on alert. (MacMath, 2016) That's us people. Higher than average temperatures in the Pacific, plus the fact that a stong and prolonged El Nino was followed by a transition to La Nina, makes it much more likely that we will have a major hurricane make land fall this storm season. If a storm hits, because of factors we've already discussed, some climatologists, meteorologists, and scientists believe that our state will experience either the most active Hurricane season we've had in ten years or the most violent. Conclusion "Of all the places in America that should be investing in clean renewable energy, Florida should be at the top of the list, right?" ( Former Secretary of State and Democratic Presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.) Right. Because of all the states in the union we, the citizens and residents of the state of Florida, stand to lose the most if global warming is allowed to continue unchecked. Our lands and our lives stand in the balance. As the editor of Heart of Daytona Review my number one priority is to inform the people in my community of what's going on in the world and to make sure our people have the information necessary to make positive productive decisions for ourselves and our families. Towards that end, we will be covering the changing climate and the issues surrounding it, Sea Level Rise, Water Availability and this horrible Heat, extensively in every issue of Heart of Daytona Review. We will also cover topics like, the specific actions government officials are taking to prepare the state and learning what we, the citizenry, can change so that we all have a better chance of surviving a world Experts are calling for an above-normal hurricane season this year with 14 named storms forecast for the Atlantic basin. Of those, eight are predicted to become hurricanes and four are predicted to become major hurricanes...this season is expected to be more active than any season in the past three years. Experts warn that those living along the Atlantic continued below continued from above evolving more quickly than it has in 100 years. Because our climate is changing, (Yes I believe.) The research I've done is pretty clear, and I just don't think NASA would lie. Also, if Climate Change is such a non-issue, then why did the Governor forbid discussion, or exploration of the subject? (Thank God it's an election year.) All of us, need to take a hard look at the way we live and start making some serious changes to slow, if not halt the harm we as a society have done to our environment. It's not as hard as it sounds. For instance, I've started recycling, and I tried turning off the A/C but that will be hard for me because of this heat. But I'm committed, I want there to be something here for my daughter. Already I don't drive. I've been saving up, but an electric car is way out of my reach right now. The bus is fine, after all, does the world really need another car and it's emissions on the road? I don't think so, but I'm a Floridian, if things don't change we'll all either be swept away in a massive hurricane or sink ibelow the ocean. And that's not as farfetched an idea as we might think. The coast of Rincon in Puerto Rico is losing coast at the rate of 3.3 feet a year. *(NCA, 2014) Which brings me to the hurricane season that started in June. Even as I write NOAA, the National Oceanic Atmospheric Association, "In its updated 2016 Atlantic Hurricane Season Outlook... Calls for a higher likelihood of a near-normal or above-normal season. Forecasters now expect a 70percent chance of 12–17 Page 12 Issue 1 Heart of Daytona Review Special Report: Florida's Changing Climate continued from pg. 11b named storms, of which 5–8 are expected to become hurricanes, including 2–4 major hurricanes. The seasonal averages are 12 named storms, 6 hurricanes, and 3 major hurricanes." * in an email I received from him on Sunday. "This is an important story as it has been a number of years (10?) since the last major hurricane hit Florida...people need to be reminded of the risk of hurricanes. People have short memories." out. Until then, be careful people. Hurricanes are no joke and we are long overdue... Have a family safety plan firmly in place for your household, be familiar with evacuation routes from your neighborhood and where the closest shelters are. Neither Meteorologist Carrick nor Mr. Witte chose to comment more specifically about either Climate Change, or what Floridians can expect this Hurricane Season. If you think you won't have to evacuate, make sure you have plenty of flashlights and batteries, no candles, that's too much of a fire risk. "It only takes one storm to make land for a season to be active to you." Mr. Witte did, however, offer some suggestions about additional resources for news and information. Have a well-stocked first aid kit and plenty of water and nonperishable foods or a good working generator. A sentiment repeated by NASA's, Joe Witte, a Climate Communicator for the Goddard Space Flight Center No one wants to talk about it, but the citizens of Florida have a right to know what's going on and I will do my best to find If a storm comes and you decide not to evacuate at first, have a go-bag ready, but travel light. Be careful people. As Channel 13 Chief Meteorologist Bryan Carrick stated to me Friday in a phone interview, Things can be replaced, you can't. And, if the Lord is willing, you'll be back. So take only important papers (ID's or Driver's Licenses, birth certificates, social security cards, DD214's), phone numbers of family or friends outside of the state, a change of clothes for you and your family and any maintenance medicationss you all have to take daily. People say don't take money to shelters, but if your shelter gets evacuated and you end up somewhere in Arkansas or Missouri, it might be nice to have at least a couple dollars on you.
