Your support allows Young Audiences New Jersey & Eastern Pennsylvania to continue its mission to inspire children and to expand their learning through the arts. I was lucky as a child to grow up in a home where the arts and creativity were ever present. My school had a broad array of arts programming, which nurtured an appreciation of creativity in all things. In college I studied art history, painting and sculpture. The rigor of the creative thinking process has served me well as an attorney. Every great endeavor requires “creative” solutions; and, arts education is key to expanding young minds in all fields of study. My affinity for the arts and my hope that all children would get a chance to feel the sense of wonder and inspiration that I had enjoyed brought me to Young Audiences. What kept me at Young Audiences for over twenty years has been the amazing dedication and skill of our staff and artists and the joy of working with our exceptionally committed Board of Trustees. In our 40 year history, our artists have inspired 11.1 million children through programs, workshops and residencies. We inspire so many, and with your support all children will experience the essential benefits of arts and creativity. It’s been a wonderful journey. Join us. 10/18/13 4:13 PM Celebrating 40 Years …together. Photo by Michael Branscom WHO WE ARE Since 1973, Young Audiences New Jersey & Eastern Pennsylvania (YA) has introduced 11.1 million children to their own creativity through the arts. This year we reached 463,000 young people in 673 schools. Our roster of over 300 professional teaching artists represents every art form: • Visual • Dance • Music • Theatre • Digital media • Language WHAT WE DO Young Audiences partners with schools, parents, artists and funders to provide the best in arts education for our children. We offer the highest quality: • Performances • Workshops and Residencies • Teachers Professional Development • Family and Community Workshops WHY IT’S IMPORTANT Young Audiences’ artists engage and empower children through imagination, creativity and innovation. Success in school, work and life depends on it. Our work promotes positive self-expression, develops creative and critical thinking skills and expands children’s understanding of themselves and the world in which they live. The arts expand a child’s love of learning and help develop nimble and rigorous thinkers who grow into engaged citizens. Creativity is a critical part of our foundation and a necessary building block in learning, life and success. Please continue to support us as we work toward our ultimate goal: Reaching every child every year with quality arts education. Your work is making a difference in these young people’s lives.” —Francisco Durán, Superintendent, Trenton School District YA created Adopt-a-School in 2006 in response to the elimination of the arts by the Trenton School District. The program provides substantial and sustained arts experiences to elementary and middle school students and their teachers. This program is supported by corporations, foundations, local businesses and individuals, all dedicated to restoring the district’s arts programs. In 2011, we achieved our goal to have year-long programming in all 23 elementary, middle and charter schools in Trenton and the program was expanded to Ewing and Lawrence. Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies FAMILY ARTS & CREATIVITY and FAMILY FESTIVALS NRG CREATIVELY GREEN AWARDS TARGET ARTS EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIPS Family Arts programs are designed to strengthen child-parent relationships, build parent-teacher partnerships, and enrich the community. Offered in workshop or festival formats, the programs engage parents and their children in open-ended arts activities. 2013 marked the 12th year of the New Brunswick Family Arts Festival, themed “Dance for Life”. The daylong event is a healthy lifestyles program that offers workshops and dance performances to emphasize the fun in physical activity. The day incorporates performances by community dance groups dedicated to keeping alive the traditions of their heritage with Mexican, Chinese, African, Hungarian, Indian and Irish groups performing. 1980-1982 Funding from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts and The Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation helps us bring performances and workshops to Trenton and Camden. Marilyn Grounds is elected Board Chair and YANJ expands its roster to include dance and storytelling. ARTISTS – 10 PERFORMANCE GROUPS, CHILDREN SERVED – 45,000 YANJ AnnualReport2013.indd 4 10/18/13 4:13 PM NRG CREATIVELY GREEN AWARDS “Our students are the children of Camden – we work to ensure they grow to become adept learners, community leaders and environmental stewards. The theme of Young Audiences’ festival perfectly aligns with our mission and vision.” —Dr. Antoinette C. Dendtler, Lead Person/Founder & Head of ECO Charter School, Camden, NJ With generous support from NRG Energy, Inc., we launched a five-school family arts festival series that merges art and sustainability. Piloted in the fall of 2012, our artists developed specially designed art workshops that explore environmental sustainability, science and art. Prior to the event, participating schools develop classroom curricula and projects on the topic. The school identifies a community arts project that is launched the evening of the festival and continues beyond the event. The evening’s festivities include a performance and a series of hands-on workshops for children and parents led by YA artists. Schools are selected through an application process and winning schools are awarded a festival. The program is publicized to every NJ and Eastern PA school. TARGET ARTS EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIPS Five to eight schools are awarded grants each year through an application process that identifies both a school’s financial need and its commitment to arts education for their students. The program is designed to foster creativity within the school community. Each customized program is developed to maximize students’ experiences with quality arts programs, provide opportunities to understand the cultural importance of the arts and creativity, and connect to classroom curriculum and life. Each grant provides support for schools to create a community celebration as a collaborative culminating event. New and noteworthy SANDY RELIEF ARTS EDUCATION INITIATIVE “As a transformative educator, counselor, and advocate I truly believe that arts can change and heal the world.” —Dawud Akram, School Counselor, New York Avenue School, Atlantic City, NJ The Sandy Relief Arts Education Initiative is a new program to aid schools affected by Hurricane Sandy. This initiative is funded through the New Jersey Recovery Fund and YA’s generous donors. Programming will focus on the power of the arts as a vehicle for healing and recovery. Schools will be awarded grants of up to $10,000 to bring a year’s worth of arts education programming to their students. 1994-1995 SANDY RELIEF INITIATIVE DONORS Katherine Adams Melanie and John Clarke Lynne and Van Davis Linda Kinsey and Don Ehman Elizabeth and Aristides Georgantas Sandy and Scott Gordon Deborah Berman and Bruce Greenberg Jacqueline Jones and Ed Greene Janet M. THE BLUEPRINT. $2,100,000 There is a saying, “It is better to build a child than fix an adult.” We agree. Together with parents and educators, we are doing our part to build children that grow into productive and caring adults. We are calling our efforts a “Capital Campaign” and our goal is $3.1 million. Unlike most capital campaigns that are designed to produce strong, enduring structures, we seek to lay a foundation of creativity, innovation and compassion within each child. $1,500,000 We currently reach one-third of the region’s 1.3 million children — we won’t stop until every child experiences quality arts programming every year. THE INVESTOR’S ROLE. Donors to the Capital Campaign share our vision for a healthy financial future and increase programs for underserved students and schools, as follows: $1,000,000 1. BUILD A BETTER CHILD ENDOWMENT FUND Thanks to our long-time advocate and contributor Betty Wold Johnson, The Robert Wood Johnson 1962 Charitable Trust pledged a $1 million challenge grant to establish an endowment fund that will ensure continued financial stability and provide resources to develop new and innovative programs. Every gift to this fund has been matched 1:1 by the Trust. Our goal is to reach $2 million. The Princeton Area Community Foundation has been selected to manage the fund. 2. REACH EVERY CHILD SCHOLARSHIP FUND Investment in this fund subsidizes programs for underserved schools and communities with a goal of reaching all children, no matter their geographic location or economic status. Once the goal is reached, a minimum of 10 percent of the Scholarship Fund will be used each year to increase program offerings to schools in-need. $500,000 Photo by Michael Branscom $0 CAPITAL CAMPAIGN PROGRESS 5 YANJ AnnualReport2013.indd 6 10/18/13 4:13 PM CAPITAL CAMPAIGN DONORS $1 MILLION The Robert Wood Johnson 1962 Charitable Trust $50,000-$200,000 The Charles Evans Foundation The George and Estelle Sands Foundation Nancy M.
