That means its time for the AFM’s annual fundraiser: La Grande Fête de Beaujolais Nouveau with Silent Auction. This year, Maxine and Pat Patterson have very kindly made arrangements for us to hold this event at Trezevant Manor -‐-‐ a very beautiful and centrally located place for our party. Funds raised at this event makes it possible for the AFM to offer a broader range of programs and to support more French language and cultural initiatives. Please support the AFM by buying tickets to this great evening of wine, fabulous food, and French flair! And don’t forget to make a donation to the silent auction. If you have friends who might be interested in the AFM this is definitely the event to bring them to! Getting the word out about the AFM’s programs and initiatives is very important for our existing members and to attract new members. The Board of the AFM wants recruit a new Board member to keep the calendar on our web site current and vibrant. We have an easy web site to work with, so no special programming skills are required. If you would like to volunteer your services or suggest someone to take on this position, please contact me. We had an excellent turn out at our October program on the Paris Flood presented by Prof. Jackson at Rhodes College. Those of you who couldn't' come missed a real treat! À Bientôt! He was born in 1962 in Meurthe-‐et-‐Moselle, France. In addition to his writing, Claudel is a Professor of Literature at the University of Nancy, and a film director. He directed the 2008 film I've Loved You So Long (Il y a longtemps que je t'aime). Much admired, it won the 2009 BAFTA for the best film not in English. This book is about the unlikely meeting of two individuals from two very different worlds. We see the lives of the two protagonists of this story from the perspective of a French artist. Mr. Linh is an old man. He has left his war-‐torn village with just a small suitcase containing a few old clothes, a faded photograph and a handful of soil. In his arms lies a newborn baby. The baby's parents are dead, and Mr. Linh has decided to go away with Sang Diû, his granddaughter. After a long voyage by boat, they disembark in a cold, grey city along with hundreds of other refugees. There, he will become friends with Mr. Bark, whom he meets on a park bench. Despite the language barrier, they are able to understand each other. This book is available to borrow from the Médiathèque, our collection of books, films and music. If only walls could speak! What tales these walls could tell! This beautifully restored hôtel particulier once belonged to the dutch painter Ary Scheffer and has since become a shrine to writer George Sand, one of the Romanticism’s leading lights. Across the courtyard from the museum building, you will find the atelier where Scheffer worked – and met Chopin, Liszt, Lamartine, Tourgueniev, Delacroix and other celebrities – from 1830 to 1858. There is a recreation of George Sand’s study with many of her personal items and copies of her works on display. In addition to the museum’s permanent collection there are always rotating exhibits on display. Currently there is an exhibit hosted in collaboration with the Cooper Hewitt museum in New York of watercolours of European interiors from the mid 19th century. There is also a charming tea room to restore and replenish you for further sightseeing. 8 Le Petit Journal French Films from our Médiathèque Par Juliet Jones Here is a list of seven good films that are available to be borrowed from our Médiathèque. Most are in DVD format but the first two are videos. Contact Juliet Jones, [email protected] or 374-‐0582 if you would like to borrow any of them. We owe thanks to member Christine Lemons for donating several of them. "La Cage aux Folles" is a 1978 French-‐Italian film adaptation of the 1973 play La Cage aux Folles by Jean Poiret. It is co-‐written and directed by Édouard Molinaro and stars Ugo Tognazzi and Michel Serrault. Like the play, the film tells the story of a gay couple – Renato Baldi (Ugo Tognazzi), the manager of a Saint-‐Tropez nightclub featuring drag entertainment, and Albin Mougeotte (Michel Serrault), his star attraction – and the madness that ensues when Renato's son, Laurent (Rémi Laurent), brings home his fiancée, Andrea (Luisa Maneri), and her ultra-‐conservative parents (Carmen Scarpitta and Michel Galabru) to meet them. -‐ VHS Video "Diabolique" (Les Diaboliques in French) is a 1955 French black-‐and-‐white psychological thriller feature film directed by Henri-‐Georges Clouzot, starring Simone Signoret, Véra Clouzot and Paul Meurisse. It is based on the novel Celle qui n'était plus (She Who Was No More) by Pierre Boileau and Thomas Narcejac. The story blends elements of thriller and horror, with the plot focusing on a woman and her husband's mistress who conspire to murder the man; after the crime is committed, however, his body disappears, and a number of strange occurrences ensue. VHS Video "Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis" is a 2008 French comedy film starringKad Merad, Dany Boon and Zoé Félix. Philippe Abrams is the manager of the postal service in Salon-‐de-‐Provence, Bouches-‐du-‐Rhône, in southern France. He is married to Julie, whose depressive character makes his life miserable. Philippe does everything to get a job at an office on the Mediterranean seaside to make her happy. As this favourable position will be granted to somebody who is disabled, Abrams decides to pretend that he is. However, the management finds out... DVD "L'enfant" is a 2005 Belgian film directed by Jean-‐Pierre and Luc Dardenne. Bruno, 20, and Sonia, 18, are surviving on her welfare checks and Bruno's petty crimes when Sonia becomes pregnant. Bruno sells their baby to a black market adoption ring to make some quick cash. Faced with Sonia's shock, he regrets his mistake and buys the child back at a premium -‐-‐ but, after being turned away by Sonia, his mounting debts and desperation lead Bruno down a quick path to prison..... DVD "Joyeux Noel" is a 2005 film about the World War I Christmas truce of December 1914, depicted through the eyes of French, Scottish and German soldiers. A few days before Christmas, the Scots and French troops lead a combined assault on the German trenches in France. The attack causes heavy casualties on both sides, but does not break the stalemate of trench warfare. One of the Scottish brothers, William, is mortally wounded during the attack, and his brother Jonathan is forced to abandon him in no-‐man's-‐land as they retreat.[3] Audebert loses his wallet (with the photograph of his wife) in the German trench in the confusion.... DVD "Father and Sons" (Père et fils) 2004 film, directed by Michel Boujenah. Comedy. Seventy-‐year-‐old Léo has three sons, but several years after a severe falling out between two of them they still can't be in the same room together without exploding, and Léo isn't getting any younger. His plans to repair past damages have never succeeded, but when a harmless fainting spell lands him in the hospital, Léo is inspired to initiate the ultimate plan: a make-‐it-‐or-‐break-‐it scheme to reunite his family. DVD "Amélie" (Original French title: Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain) is a 2001 romantic comedy film directed by Jean-‐Pierre Jeunet. Written by Jeunet with Guillaume Laurant, the film is a whimsical depiction o 9f contemporary Parisian life, set in Montmartre. It tells the story of a shy waitress, played by Audrey Tautou, who decides to change the lives of those around her for the better, while struggling with her own isolation.
