By Dr. Douglas DeSchepper
Parents and Community Members:
February is a busy month for staff and students. Students will have finished up with the January Benchmarks by the
beginning of February. PTO is sponsoring a Valentine’s Dance for the Elementary Students in the HS gym on February
14th. Also, the Valentine’s Day parties are in the middle of the month. Third through 6th grade students will be
preparing for the Illinois Standards Achievement Test in the beginning of March. Although this winter has been rough,
we look forward to a quick end and a beginning of warmer weather. Hats, gloves, and boots are required to be outside
during winter. Snowpants are extra-- if your child wants to play in the snow during recess.
Lastly, the Board of Education will be reviewing and approving the 2014-2015 Public School Calendar for Orangeville
over the next two months. Per last year, a calendar committee has been formed with the participation of teachers and
administrators who are meeting to work on a calendar to be presented to the Board of Education for approval.
Parent Information:

Welcome back! After a really long winter break, students have just completed finals and we are half way through the school
year!

The basketball season is half over with the varsity boys record at (0-11), JV boys (1-10), varsity girls (4-12), JV girls (2-11), 8

grade boys (6-9), 7 grade boys (1-14), 8 grade girls (1-0), and 7 grade girls (0-1). Due to the weather, there have been
many scheduling changes, so please be sure to check the school website for updates.
There have been some new updates to the building. There has been a chair lift installed on the lobby stairs and is able to
make stops on all three levels of the high school building, making it more accessible to people with physical disabilities. We
are continuing to use the temporary boiler to heat half of the school, and will try to keep you updated with that situation.
th
The 8 grade students will be going to Laredo Taft on January 27-29. They will experience outdoor education and team
building. Be sure they dress warm as they will be outside most of those days.
Students will need to make decisions within the next month on CareerTec and classes they will take next year. If your
student is planning on attending a college, please encourage them to visit with Mr. Webber. In addition to the information
about colleges, scholarship applications are available as well. On January 22, Mr. Webber and an ISAC representative will
hold a FAFSA workshop in the LMC at 6:00pm. This is a good opportunity for graduating seniors and parents to fill out the
actual FAFSA form. If you are planning on attending please bring all of your tax information.
MESSAGE TO PARENTS:
The high school is going to try something new. Instead of sending fee
receipts home with students (which do not always get there), or mailing
them (because of the rise in cost of a stamp), we will be emailing them
to the email address on file. If you do not have an email address on
file, we will continue with the prior method of sending receipts home.

~ November/December 2013
As the holidays approach, our wish is that everyone have safe and happy celebrations. It seems like just
yesterday that the kids were starting this semester! Another year will roll to the next on our calendars soon. It
has been an action packed twelve months, and we are looking forward to 2014 with anticipation!
Over the Thanksgiving holiday, a boiler explosion at the high school left our head custodian injured, but he is
home and on the mend. Thank you to the first responders and fire department for their quick actions. Also, a
big thank you to Jay Doyle and the crew at Loescher. With the extremely cold temperatures we have been
experiencing, it was critical to find a boiler replacement to prevent the school pipes from freezing. Dr.
DeSchepper reported that insurance will cover the new equipment; we will have the amount of the deductibles
to report to the board
There have been many events to attend in the last several months; the winter concert where students and
teachers did a wonderful job, community talent show which drew rave reviews, wrestling meets and basketball
games. They all showcase our small town spirit well, and keep our community strong. The fund-raising dinner
for the basketball team was well attended and enjoyed. The high school Band and Chorus concert is scheduled
for December 11th. We hope to see you there and the games cheering our teams on. You can always find the
schedule at http://orangevillecusd.com/ for details. Go Broncos!
The Orangeville PTO is hoping to sponsor mini-grants for teachers with the money they raised from the fall
events. They are co-funding a Christmas movie for the grade school, planning the Valentine's Dance, and have
distributed the class t-shirts for each grade that make it simpler on field trips to keep track of everyone. The
high school Post Prom committee has several fund raisers in process in anticipation of the May 3rd, 2014 prom
date.
One of the largest concerns was the revised date of availability for the TIF funds from the levy adopted in
1991. Previous information was that the money would be distributed to the school district in 2014, but that was
not correct. There are several options that will be discussed at the Village Board meeting December 16 at 7pm
in the village hall. We had many attendees at our December meeting to listen to Alex Mills, our Village
President, who presented those ideas. We are one of the first districts in the area to go through this process; all
of us are learning. Stay tuned for more details.
A proposal for a bass fishing team was accepted for the Orangeville School district. This involved community
volunteers to work with the student, and locate boats for them to use. There was some concern about possible
dilution that would affect other sports, as well as liability concerns. It was a good discussion. Mr. Janecke
noted that attendance at both buildings has improved over last year’s numbers. This is a large factor in how
much money we receive from the state. Thank you to parents for ensuring children attend school whenever
possible.
The national honor society inducted new members at a ceremony November 21. New members include Casey
Allen, Isaac Asche, Jaclyn Boomgarden, Hannah Badgett, Hannah Bolen, Rachel Folgate, Anna Folgate, Bailey
Lomas, Dan Obert, Sydney Young, and Bethany Shuman. Congratulations!
We hope 2014 is a good year for the community of Orangeville. Thank you to the staff, administrators, and
countless volunteers who make our schools a great place to learn. Our next meeting is January 13th at 7pm in
the High School LMC. Peggy Badgett will present information on Drug Abuse. Hope to see you there.

In December, we had our Christmas parties. On December
4th we had our officer Christmas party. We did a secret
santa gift exchange and we went out to eat at the Imperial
Palace. The second Christmas party we had was the chapter
party, which was on December 12th. Several members
brought different desserts, drinks, and other snacks for us
to munch on.

preschool screening for 3, 4 and 5 year old children on Monday, March 10, 2014
at the Orangeville United Methodist Church. To be eligible to attend the
Orangeville PASS program, each child must go through the free screening which
is available to all children whose parents reside in the School District.
The preschool screening will take approximately one hour. All children will
have their vision, hearing and general overall development screened. This service
is provided by the Illinois Department of Public Health, Northwest Special
Education Cooperative, the Early Childhood Consortium of Freeport, and the
Orangeville School District.
If you have a child who is 2 years, 9 months through 5 years old, call
(815) 789-4613 to schedule an appointment for screening. A parent or guardian
must accompany the child to the screening site.
Children ages Birth – 2 years, 9 months of age may be screened by
contacting Child and Family Connections at (815) 297-1041 to schedule
an appointment with the Early Intervention staff.
School officials encourage all families with eligible children to sign up. A

Mrs. Trampel's 2nd Grade Gingerbread House Project
Mrs. Trampel's second grade students constructed their yearly miniature Gingerbread houses as a
culmination to their Gingerbread Man activities . The students read different versions of the
Gingerbread Man and Gingerbread Baby in the classroom. They compared and contrasted the
books individually and in small groups. Character traits of the Fox and the Gingerbread Man
were completed by the students after reading the first story. In groups, the students discussed and
wrote down the beginning, middle, and ending of the stories. The students also completed story
maps of the characters, setting, problem, solution, and the moral of the story. Gingerbread Bump
was played in math, which is a game in which the students must add and subtract to move to
different areas. The students loved the part that allowed them to "bump" their partner off of a
Gumdrop if they could think of an addition or subtraction problem that would result in the
number that their partner was on. It was a very competitive math game! The object of the game
was to have the most Gumdrops with your markers on them at the end. Gingerbread stories were
also written by the students. The students used their created houses to look at as they wrote about
the characters that lived in their house. The students had a lot of fun with this project and they
were very creative!
Mrs. Brown’s 4th Grade class
Orangeville 4th graders enjoyed a trip to Springfield, Illinois on
November 15, 2013. Our day began bright and early around 6:00 A.M.
as we boarded the chartered bus along with our chaperones, eager for
the wonderful day. While in Springfield we toured the Illinois State
Capitol, Lincoln’s home, and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum.
It was a great experience that the students will remember for a long
time. We are grateful to our chaperones who attended with us.
th
When we returned back to the classroom, 4 graders wrote a diamonte poem about something they learned about President Lincoln or a related topic. We would like to share
these poems with you.

Hello again!
The holiday season always seems to fly by, doesn’t it? I hope
everyone enjoyed our “extended break” and survived the deep
freeze! It seems like we just had a Box Tops submission, but
there is another one knocking on our door: March 1st is my next
mail-in date. Please send any Box Tops you have been saving in to the schools because we don’t
want to have any expire before the fall submission date of October!  Right now in stores you
should keep your eyes peeled, because there is a promotion that has many products carrying 2
Box Tops per package. Also, if you are registered on the Box Tops website, please enter for our
school to win 100,000 bonus box tops (equals $10,000!) from Avery and Ziploc… you can enter
once per day, and the sweepstakes is open until July 17. And as always, you can earn electronic
Box Tops while buying things online if you sign up on www.boxtops4education.com and go
through the Marketplace.
Labels for Education are not just on Campbells soup
anymore.  The list of exact items is too large to include
here, but there are Labels for Education on many popular
brands such as Bic, Pepperage Farm, Pop Secret, Post,
Prego, Swanson and V8 in addition to Campbells. We must
accumulate many Labels for Education points to ‘purchase’
things from the catalog, so every single one helps. If you buy these brands, please keep saving
them. I will gather these all year long and send in one big batch at the end. Thank you for your
help!
Since we are new to the My Coke Rewards program, I thought it would be helpful to explain
how and where to find the codes for us to redeem. Most Coca-Cola brands are participating now
– Coke®, Diet Coke®, Coca-Cola Zero™, Sprite®, Fanta®,
DASANI®, POWERADE®, Minute Maid®, Pibb®, Fresca®,
Barq's®, Mello Yello™, Seagram's, FUZE® and TaB®. On 20ounce, 1 Liter and 2 Liter bottles, the code is under the cap. On
Fridgepacks, it’s inside the tear-off flap. On shrink-wrapped cases,
it’s inside the shrink wrap on the bottom of the carton. Not all packages have codes, so look for
the My Coke Rewards logo before your buy just to be sure. If you are already a member of the
Coke Rewards program, you can enter the codes yourself and then donate them to the school. If
you are not registered, please just send the codes to the school and we can enter them directly to
our account. Thank you!!
