Ra onale As we review our data in the area, o en the decision not run is based on road or weather condi ons that have changed significantly by the end of the school day even though their route was not opera ng in the morning. All the drivers must contact the parents when there are changes to their scheduled run so this informa on would be communicated to parents by the bus driver. They in turn would inform the principal. Many parents already drop students off at school when the bus does not run and in many of the cases we have looked at, there would be no safety issue with the bus route opera ng at the end of the school day. If bus does not run in the AM it will run in the PM. If the driver determines that the bus WILL NOT run in the PM due to safety concerns (i.e. inclement weather), then the parents and Administra on needs to be no fied no later than noon, the day of. Compare different shoes. Talk about size, colour, shape and special features such as flashing lights and sparkly laces. Talk about where shoes are—focus on forming ‗Where‘ questions and position words (on, under, in between, etc.) Go for a walk and make it a scavenger hunt. Look for things that start with a particular letter, or start with a particular sound, or are round, etc. Have the kids create a story that starts with ―One day, I found a pair of shoes and…ǁ. Have each child add a sentence to build a complete story Why are shoes important? Shoes can help provide stability and alignment for children to improve their development of balance and coordination. Many adult foot problems, such as arthritis, bunions and claw toes start by wearing the wrong shoes as children. What should parents look for? Fit - measure the foot for both length and width - measure feet at the end of the day, as feet tend to swell slightly - there should be enough room in the toe of the shoe to wiggle your toes - aim for about 2 cm of room between the longest toe and the end of the shoe Shape - shoe should follow the natural shape of the foot - shoes should fit comfortably around the heel: not be too loose (slipping out) or too tight (causing blisters); the ball of the foot should not slide side-to-side Arch Support and Heel Cup - shoes should have a good arch - the inside of the shoe should be built up to support the inside curve of the foot - the heel cup of the shoe should be firm and should not collapse when squeezed or pressed down Sole - shoe should provide traction and the sole should bend at the ball of the foot - if the sole is so flexible you can twist the shoe like a corkscrew – it likely does not have enough support! Material and Fasteners - look for laces, straps or Velcro and avoid slip-on‘s if possible - look for a breathable material such as heavy canvas, leather or mesh. Shoe Tying Try using two different colored laces to practice so the student can clearly see what the left and right side lace are doing – you can easily sew half a black lace and half a white lace together (or color half of a white lace) and then lace them through the child's shoes. Round and oval laces are more difficult to tie. Begin practicing with flat laces. It is often helpful to provide the student with verbal cues or a ―scriptǁ to follow when tying shoes to assist their recall of the steps. Try providing the following cues: ―Criss-cross the lacesǁ ―Go under the bridge and pullǁ ―Make the bunny earǁ ―Wrap the other lace around the bunny earǁ ―Push the lace through- here comes the other bunny ear ! ǁ ―Grab the bunny ears and pullǁ For more photos and video demonstrations of various shoe-tying methods, check out http://www.fieggen.com/shoelace/ 6
