My son Gabe found himself in an interesting situation recently. He had to participate in a Christmas quiz, game show like.
Now, our family respects the holiday and
we are friends with many Christians who
consider it sacred, but suffice it to say, the
details are not part of our collective knowledge base! He wasn’t doing very well.
Finally, he got a question he thought he
had a chance on—‘name three of Santa’s
reindeer.’ Gabe pressed the buzzer and answered triumphantly, “Dasher…Dancer…
and Rudolph!” The facilitator retorted,
“Sorry, that is incorrect—Rudolph is not
real.” To which Gabe replied, “I didn’t
think any of them were actually real!”
The next step after such a story is to quickly
acknowledge that Judaism too has its share
of fanciful teachings, un-tethered from reality. We need look no further than the next
holiday on the calendar, Purim. Even many
observant biblical scholars consider the
Book of Esther, the basis of Purim, to be a
farce, a topsy-turvy tale of intrigue filled
with too many entertaining ironies to actually be factual: The King expels one Queen
because she never listens to him, and ends
up following the orders of her replacement,
Queen Esther! The gallows that Haman
(Boo!) prepares for the Jews is used on
Haman himself! There is remarkable heroism from some quarters and diabolical acts
from others, and not even one mention of
God who is supposed to make sense out of it
all. Even the Jews who are spared from
genocide in the story turn around to go on
a murderous rampage of their own. Our
Purim celebrations mirror this; we are supposed to get so crazy with drink, mirth, and
masks that all celebrants, together for a
religious occasion, temporarily lose the
ability to differentiate good from evil!
Purim can be considered existentialist, the
idea that life goes forward randomly as is,
without rhyme, reason, or plan. People can
be radically holy and unspeakably horrific;
nature is both beautiful and destructive.
And in truth, to study science, psychology,
and history is to confirm this is the way of
the world; so often one step forward and
then two steps back. This is why existentialism and depression so often go together.
However, religious existentialism is a way I
have learned to go forward with optimism
and integrity. It is about acknowledging
and learning from the random nature of reality and taking it upon ourselves to create
meaning, so we can respond to life’s craziness with compassion, love, justice, and
peace. This to me is the true purpose of religion, to give people the values, rituals and
stories that allow us to face the stark reality
with courage, community, and hope. As
Rabbi Rami Shapiro has written, “Religion
is a figment of the imagination, and that is
why we need it!”
And so we will celebrate Purim at CRC with
a little help from our friends, The Beatles.
We will see that “nothing is real (and nothing to get hung about).” We will then
emerge from that dose of reality and in the
face of it we will feed our friends (mitzvah
of Purim), share our resources with the
poor and vulnerable (mitzvah of Purim),
and witness the inevitable arrival of spring,
a time for hope and renewal.

Why should Missouri have early voting?
There is nothing more American than
standing up and exercising your right to
vote. But, as our lives get busier, it is increasingly more difficult for many voters
to make it to the polls on Election Day.
Early voting provides every registered
voter with the additional convenience
and flexibility that many need to participate in our great civic tradition.
CRC is a proud supporter of this early
voting initiative. We believe that increasing opportunities to vote will empower
more people in our democracy. Early
voting won’t fix everything, but will certainly give more people a voice.

The day after the assassination of
Dr. Martin
Luther King,
Jr. in April of
1968,
students in Jane
Elliot’s third
grade class
in a small,
all-white
Iowa town
were
confused about why anyone would kill Dr.
King. In an effort to teach her students
what discrimination feels like and what
it can do to people, Elliot divided her
class into blue-eyed and brown-eyed
groups. One day she treated the blueeyed group as the superior group with
the brown-eyed group being inferior.
The next day she switched. What she
saw, and what the students learned,
was astonishing. This is the story of that
lesson, its lasting impact on the children, and its enduring power thirty
years later.

The 9th Graders in Washington, DC
February 20-23, 20 CRC 9th graders (as well as seven chaperones, including Rabbi Ed, Jennifer Bernstein and Jen Bersdale) took
Washington, DC by storm! There were several highlights of the trip, but perhaps the biggest highlight was when they lobbied
the staffs of Senators Blunt and McCaskill and Representatives Clay and Wagner. The students did an INCREDIBLE job. To hear
their amazing speeches, please join us for Kabbalat Shabbat on March 7 at 7:30 pm. They are not to be missed!
The 10th Graders in New York City
We arrived in NYC, picked up knishes and went right to our meeting with Sami, a Holocaust survivor and our docent at the
Simon Wiesenthal Museum of Tolerance. Next we stopped at Grand Central Station for a slice of pizza where we danced with
Hasidim, followed by an improv session with St. Louis comedian Joanna Firestone. We finished with Kabbalat Shabbat services
at Central Synagogue and dinner at Sammy’s Romanian restaurant, where we sang and danced until midnight.
Shabbat brought a trip to the Tenement Museum where our students became an immigrant family just off the boat looking for
housing and work; to Katz’s deli for lunch; to a walk down Eldridge street of the Lower East side through Chinatown to Ground
Zero. At Ground Zero we stood on ground made holy by remains and stories of those who died that day and added the names
of our own loved ones, and recited the kaddish holding each other in a circle. A woman approached us and said she had been
watching as we prayed and saw a light shining over us, angels? she asked? a light she captured in a photo (below right) that
left as soon as we were done. We walked from the memorial to Park51, the site of the controversial “ground zero “ mosque where
the director, a powerful young woman born in East Jerusalem explained why her faith and this community center based on the
model of the JCC was so important to her and to the diversity of NYC. The night ended with Times Square and the Broadway
musical Kinky Boots.
The last day was a trip to Brooklyn and the Lubavitch community of Crown Heights. Thanks to Andrew, Nicole and Brad, and
each of our amazing confirmands for being open to the wonder of travel and the experience of finding ourselves in the “other”
with hopes that eventually we will all be One. Join us for the Confirmation service on May 9th to hear more!

CRC Connects Open House a Huge Success
Chaired by Lori Becker, Ken Goldman and Scott Levine, this project was a labor of love. It would not be a success without you,
our CRC members and volunteers. CRC stands on the principle of being a lay-led congregation, and YOU make CRC what it is.
To that end, having our members showcase what CRC is all about, makes this so special, and so “CRC-ish.” As the kickoff event
of our 30th Anniversary Celebration, our Open House and Opportunities Fair brought out a huge number of CRC members and
potential members who explored how they could become involved in the life and work of CRC.

Adult megillah Reading
Beatles Extravaganza!
Saturday, March 15, 7:30 pm
Once again, we kick off Purim for adults
with a fun and irreverent reading of the
Book of Esther. This year, the vehicle to
fulfill the mitzvah will be none other
than the Beatles, as interpreted by our
rabbis and others. All of this complete
with a ‘house band’ and hamentaschen
for everybody! Feel free to dress in costume.

taken this day on as one of their mitzvahs and always work hard to provide a

kids of CRC. In addition, the Shushan
Castle Bouncy House will be back, as
well as Lisa Mandel and her Green
Screen so that you can bring home fun
photo souvenirs form the day. At 2:15,
we’ll take a break from the festivities to
gather in the sanctuary for a rollicking
telling of the Book of Esther, again
