happy to report that the major projects undertaken
Dear Friends Ithisam past
summer have been well received and have
already had such a positive impact in so many ways at our school! The stadium renovations, the transformation of the media center into the Demetree Learning
Commons, and the addition of the art gallery have gone a long way to continue our
commitment to offer the best facilities possible in support of our educational and
extra-curricular programs.
Currently we are making plans for the 2015-2016 academic year. Students from
the Catholic grade schools have had the opportunity to visit our campus and applicants from non-Catholic middle schools in the area, as well as transfer students from
out of town, are being interviewed. Our Parent Information/Open House sessions
were very successful, with 7th and 8th grade families turning out in great numbers to
investigate all that we have to offer.
Plans are well underway for this year’s auction – the 29th Annual BK Boosters
auction. The auction is important because it supports all of our athletic and extra-curricular programs. If you have never joined us for this event, let me extend my invitation to you to join us for this wonderful evening. All parents, alumni, and friends are
welcome to attend. Much more information about the auction is included in this
issue of The Avenue.
I am gratified to report that the Annual Fund continues to receive very strong
support from our alumni, parents, and friends of the school. Already, more than
$225,000 has been pledged to this important
appeal. The Annual Fund enables us to assist
300 students who would otherwise not be
able to attend BKHS. If you made a pledge and
haven’t sent it in yet, or if you haven’t pledged
and would like to, there’s still time to be a part
of this year’s campaign. You’ll find a postagepaid business reply envelope with a pledge
card printed on it conveniently inserted in this
issue of The Avenue.
As we anticipate BKHS’s 64th year, I am happy
to report BK is well-positioned to maintain its
long tradition of excellence!

As this issue of The Avenue goes to press, the news that Father Houle
will leave Bishop Kenny at the end of this school year to assume the
position of pastor at St. Paul’s at the beach and continue his duties as
Episcopal Vicar for Finance and Development for the Diocese has just
been released. After 26 years as President of BK, Father Houle will certainly be missed but, he leaves our school well-positioned for future
success and in the very capable hands of Principal Todd Orlando.
Three-peat! Pictures of the 1990, 1991, and 1992 Bishop
Kenny Girls’ Basketball State Championship teams are on
permanent display in the John A. Baldwin Athletic Center.
“
We had a phenomenal leader in Coach Orlando. He
taught us the true meaning of team, work ethic, and
determination. He was tough on us, no doubt, but
he taught each and every one of us that we could
achieve any goal we set out to accomplish.
– Kara Citrano Leonard ’90
Team Captain
My years playing basketball at Bishop Kenny were
amazing and winning the state championship was
just icing on the cake. Coach Orlando taught us to
work hard and play as a team. I never forgot those
life lessons because they were not just meant for how
you conducted yourself on the basketball court.
Coach Orlando embedded in us that we were not
just teammates, we were family. This team will
always have a very special place in my heart and I
am thankful to have been a part of it!
– Lori Werner Miller ‘91
The support that we received from the Bishop Kenny
community at that time was amazing. I will never
forget when we left for Lakeland, they lined the
streets as we exited the campus and cheered us
on…it was very emotional. As I look back, it was
amazing to be the first girls’ team in the history of
Bishop Kenny to bring home a state title!
– Amy Kaelin Dow ’90

(L-R) Cheryl O’Connor, Rev. Michael Houle, and Pat Smith at
the Christmas luncheon and retirement program in December.
In a spontaneous show of love and affection, the senior class
took it upon themselves to line the walkway from Crusader
Corner to the parked car of Mrs. Pat Smith on her last day of work
at BK last August. The students applauded and cheered her on as
she walked the familiar path to her car. It is no small testament to
Pat that the students happily waited 30 minutes after their 2:30
dismissal on a Friday afternoon to pull off this touching salute!
Pat was hired 17 years ago to fill the position of attendance
secretary and receptionist in the main office. A few years later she
was asked to move to the library as an assistant to the Media
Specialist and to help with student supervision. It was, however,
in her final move as the anchor of Crusader Corner that Pat Smith
impacted the lives of so many people at Bishop Kenny.
Designed as a full-service student headquarters, Crusader
Corner provides everything from books and parking passes to
prom tickets, sweatshirts, and all manner of BK gear. It also provides a place for parents to deliver a lunch bag or a pair of sneakers forgotten during a hectic rush out the door. It even serves as
BK’s lost and found - depository for all things, large and small.
In addition to managing the student services offered in
Crusader Corner, Pat, whose work day started at 6:30 in the morning, coordinated coverage for teachers who would call in sick. Pat
would have the daily substitutions covered before most of the
faculty and staff would arrive on campus.
At this year’s faculty and staff Christmas luncheon, Pat, surrounded by family, listened as support staff supervisor Cheryl
O’Connor spoke about her 17 years, “Pat, know that all of the big
and the little things that you have done for our community have
not gone unnoticed. Your gifts are many, your warmth and caring, understanding, thinking of others first - you truly cared about
our students and our staff, and you certainly had a pulse on our
community. You’ve always done whatever you could to make our
days a little easier. Thank you for brightening the days of so many
people for 17 years.”
And, finally, Father Houle in his remarks extended his personal gratitude, “For the special attention that you paid to so
many of our needy students; those in need of books, coats,
sweaters, and other things that were needed and may not have
been asked for. What a remarkable gift you were to these young
people and an inspiration to me as you watched with such compassion and diligence for these students.”
Many blessings and much happiness is extended by the
entire BK Community, to our friend Pat Smith as she enters this
exciting new phase of life.

COVER STORY
25 Years Later
Celebrating a Cinderella Season
T
he cover of this edition of The Avenue features Principal
Todd Orlando, or should we say, Coach Todd Orlando,
surrounded by the 1990 Class 2A Girls’ State
Championship Basketball Team, winners of the first state championship
in team history. The championship game, played at the Lakeland Civic
Center, saw BK defeat Cocoa Beach 63-61. The team gathered in
January to celebrate the 25th anniversary of that Cinderella season.
On-court recognition of the team was held during half time of the
Lady Crusaders vs. University Christian game on Saturday, January 17
during an afternoon game at the John Baldwin Athletic Center. All but
three members of the 1990 team were in attendance. Many of the former
players traveled to Jacksonville for the occasion.
For the record, four members of the team still live in Jacksonville
and three are married to Bishop Kenny graduates; 13 played on the
1990 State Championship team, seven played on both the 1990 and
1991 State Championship Teams, and only one played on the 1990,
1991 and the 1992 teams. Yes – the Bishop Kenny High School Girls’
Basketball Program won three State Championships in a row in the
early 1990s making their record of dominance a three-peat! *
Front Row: Dana Kloski Ashby, Denise Belyea Williams, Amy Kaelin Dow,
Tasha Garrison Fullwood, and Angie Farah Bateh. Back Row: Kara Citrano Leonard,
Alisha Allman Ambry, Coach Todd Orlando, Lori Werner Miller, Kelly Halter Englert,
and Amy Wilkerson Smith.
Not Pictured: Kate Duffy Stemle, Casey Malone Johnston, and Nicole Bunke.
Among the attendees, Angie Farah Bateh ‘93, the only
team member to play on all three championship teams,
scored over 1,000 points in her four years on the team. She
was named an All-American, the only female basketball player
in BK history to earn this distinction. Angie’s jersey #00 was
retired in 1994.
After group pictures were taken and reminiscences were
shared, the group, along with Coach Orlando, continued the
celebration with friends and family at a private party held at
The Mudville Grille on Beach Boulevard. Many familiar faces
from on the court and in the stands from that magical 1990
season came together once again to say…Go Crusaders!
Team members are in the planning stages of making a
group contribution to the school – something to help current
students, a way of saying thanks. “We felt it would be important for us to pool our resources and give something back to
the school as a team. It seems appropriate for us to do it
together, just the way we’ve always done things,” Leonard said.
1990 - Twenty-five years ago a very intense
Todd Orlando coached his team to a
State Championship.
2014 - Twenty-five years later, an equally intense
Todd Orlando coaches another generation of
girls’ basketball players.
“We had almost 100 people turn out for the anniversary celebration!
Seeing the girls’ parents and family members at the reunion was wonderful,
it was as important to me as seeing the players. Those people were an
incredible support system for the team. They attended all of our games in
Jacksonville and, when the team traveled, they traveled too - one big
extended family. You could always count on them to be in the stands
cheering at every game; it was a very tight group and a very special time.
I can honestly say that the 1990 season was one of the most gratifying of
my coaching career.”
– Coach Todd Orlando
Celebrating 25 years since their first State Championship, members of the 1990 girls’
basketball team and their families enjoyed a party at The Mudville Grille in St. Nicholas.

Todd Orlando - Teacher-Coach-Principal
Since joining the faculty in 1988 Todd Orlando
has worn many hats. He’s been a history teacher, girls’
basketball coach, tennis coach, and dean of students.
He has been in charge of overseeing the media center,
guidance department, the learning resource program,
and served as chairman of the technology committee.
Finally, he was named Principal by Father Houle in
2002. This year, in a surprise move, he returned to
coaching the team he led for 14 successful seasons
including three State Championship Seasons.
At 6’9” Mr. Orlando led his high school team in
scoring. He attended Bentley College in Waltham,
Massachusetts on a basketball scholarship, was named
an All-American, was a 5th round draft pick of the
Boston Celtics – his childhood dream team and, finally,
contract in hand, moved to Germany to play for two
years in the European league. While he was there he
took the opportunity to travel, host his family when
they were able to visit, and even learned to speak
some German.
“I’ve learned a lot since that first year at BK. I
guess the first thing I learned was that I could coach
girls. I certainly never planned on it. Actually, I was
shocked when I was told that I was going to do it
because I thought I was getting the JV boys! I didn’t
know anything about coaching girls. I’d played basketball all my life, I was always in the gym, but I sure
never played with girls. So, I decided that all I could do
was treat them like I would have treated a boys’ team,
and that’s exactly what I did. From the beginning I told
the girls that I expected the same work ethic and level
of rigor that I expected of myself and would expect of
a boys’ team. We worked hard, played in a summer
league at Ribault, and got in the gym as often as possible. The parents were great, they supported everything we did; they were at every game, home and
away, just like my parents had always been at my
games. It really was like a family.”
After returning to the United States he found
himself lured to Florida and, fortunately for us, with a
fresh teaching certificate in hand…to Bishop Kenny
High School. The rest, as they say, is history. In the
midst of teaching and coaching, Mr. Orlando also
earned a Master’s Degree in Educational
Leadership from Jacksonville
University.
Keeping it all in the
family, Mr. Orlando is married to former Bishop Kenny
English teacher and graduate
of the Class of 1984, Stacey
Beehner Orlando. He has two
daughters, Jordan BK ‘13 and
Cassandra “Cassie” BK ‘17, a
member of the Bishop Kenny
girls’ basketball team.

BK Hosts Brain Brawl Tournament
Teams representing 15 of the 25 Diocesan elementary schools participated in a spirited academic competition at 6th Annual Diocesan Grade
School Brain Brawl Tournament hosted by Bishop Kenny High School in
November. The preliminary rounds of the tournament were held in both
the original cafeteria and the Carla Harris Performing Arts Center. Final
championship competition was held in the Performing Arts Center.
Nearly 100 very well-prepared student competitors spent the day
answering questions in fast-paced academic competition. All were vying
for a first-place finish and bragging rights among the schools. BK VicePrincipal for Academics Mary DeSalvo, who served as one of the moderators of the event observed,“This is as competitive as any athletic contest.
The students and their teachers should be very proud of the level of
sportsmanship and knowledge these teams brought to the competition.”
Members of the Bishop Kenny faculty, representing the English, Math
and Science departments, served as judges and moderators for the tournament. In the end, Christ the King Catholic School was awarded the 1st
place trophy and each team member was presented with a Barnes & Noble
gift card and a medal. All tournament players received a certificate of participation, as well as a complimentary lunch provided by Bishop Kenny.

AUCTION 2015
EVENT DETAILS
BK Boosters Auction
P
lans are underway for the 29th annual BK auction. The committee is in place
and now all we need is you. Please mark March 21 on your calendar and plan
to join us for a wonderful evening in support of BK. Dinner and dessert will
be provided by our friends at Carrabba’s Italian Grill and Bruster’s Ice Cream.
Since 1986 the auction has generated nearly $2 million and has helped to pay
for countless projects, large and small. So far this year the Boosters have paid for trophies, uniforms, transportation, $5,000 toward a trip that a group of students made to
Washington, DC to participate in the March for Life, athletic equipment, and more. BK
Boosters President Anthony Parete remarked, “We’ve just made the first payment on
our $100,000 pledge toward the renovations made to William Johnston Stadium last
summer. We really need everyone to step up and support events like the auction so
that we can maintain this level of support.”
Date: Saturday, March 21, 2015

7:30 Live Auction Begins
Place: BK Gymnasium

Parete went on to say, “The auction is a make-or-break event for the BK Boosters.
Without it we wouldn’t be able to do half of what we do in a typical school year. Last
year the auction generated over 60% of the money we raised. It’s so financially successful because it’s a great event with a great tradition. I strongly encourage all of our
current parents and alumni to come to this year’s auction. I know that Kathy and I
wouldn’t miss it!”
• Auction guests will enjoy a delicious buffet
dinner prepared by our friends at Carrabba’s
Italian Grill, dessert from Bruster’s Ice Cream,
and drinks.
• 600 items in the live and silent auction categories
will be up for bid! Best of all, the proceeds of
the auction will be used to support the athletic
and extra-curricular activities at BK
Volunteers are always needed to make the auction a success. There are lots of
ways to get involved and both experienced and new volunteers are needed. For

Annual Fund Update
he Annual Fund is on track to collect more than
$250,000 in donations again this year. The telephone portion of the Annual Fund took place in
October. Reminders are still being mailed and gifts are
still coming in. If you made a pledge and haven’t sent it in
yet, or if you haven’t pledged and would like to, there’s still
time to be a part of this year’s campaign. You’ll find a
postage-paid business reply envelope with a pledge card printed
on it conveniently inserted in this issue of The Avenue.
Your gift, large or small, makes all the difference. A supplemental honor roll of donors will appear in the summer
edition of this publication.
Our Past Recipients
If you are a graduate whose tuition was supplemented by
the financial aid program, won’t you please make the Annual
Fund part of your annual giving this year? You’ll be helping one of
the approximately 300 students this year whose family’s financial
sacrifices alone are insufficient to meet the cost of tuition.
Matching Gifts
Why not ask your employer to contribute with a matching
gift? Not sure whether or not your employer has a matching gifts
program? Simply check with your human resources department.
Your inquiry could result in a doubled or even tripled gift to
Bishop Kenny High School.

Do You Have a Story to Share?
Bryant Adibe has been featured on the Annual Fund brochure three times.
Obviously, Bryant feels very strongly about the Annual Fund, about the financial
aid program, and about Bishop Kenny. His message is simple, without the financial
aid that he received for the four years he attended BK he would not be a BK
graduate today. What a loss that would have been for Bryant and Bishop Kenny.
If you have a story that you would like to feature in the 2015 annual fund appeal,
please contact the Office of Development at 904-398-7545 or send an email to
[email protected].

AROUND CAMPUS
March for Life 2015
Prior to boarding the bus bound for Washington, DC,
students participating in the 2015 March for Life
attended Mass together and then stopped for a
picture outside the Bishop Paul Tanner Chapel.
ifty student pilgrims and five faculty chaperones gathered
for Mass celebrated by Father Michael Houle on Monday,
January 19 at 7:15 am prior to departure for Washington,
DC in order to participate in March for Life 2015. This marks the third
year in a row that the Department of Campus Ministry has coordinated this trip and, in so doing, impacted these student pilgrims so
significantly.
The March for Life is a peaceful protest of the historic 1973 Roe v.
Wade decision that legalized abortion in the United States.
Thousands of citizens, especially youth, marched to the Capitol
building while praying, chanting, and meeting other pro-life individuals. Participation of Bishop Kenny students is coordinated and
sponsored by the Department of Campus Ministry Department in
collaboration with the Saint Vincent de Paul Society and the ProLife Club. A generous gift from the BK Boosters in the amount of
$5000 helped defray the cost of the trip; this is the third year that
the organization has helped with the cost of the bus transportation
for the trip. Chaperoning the Pilgrimage were faculty members:
Mrs. Lucy Chastain, Mr. Tommy Jordan, Mr. Tim McEvoy, Mrs. Noreen
Thurson, and Deacon Robert De Luca.
The March began at the National Mall and continued up
Constitution Avenue to the United States Supreme Court Building
on Capitol Hill.
Other trip highlights:
• Mass and Tour of St. John Paul II Museum
• Lunch and Tour of Catholic University of America
• Holocaust Museum
• Guided Tour of Franciscan Monastery Replica of the Holy Land
• Tour of National Shrine and Basilica of the Immaculate
Conception
• Attendance at Opening Mass for Life with Cardinal Sean
Patrick O’Malley, OFM Capuchin as Principal Celebrant
• Youth Rally and Mass at the Washington, DC Armory
• St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, Prayers of Thanksgiving
• Evening Tour of the Sites and Monuments

Students Travel to St. Augustine
Sixty members the Spanish National Honor Society traveled to St. Augustine to attend Mass with
Bishop Estévez in November. This was the third year that Bishop Kenny students have joined with students from Bishop Snyder, St. Joseph Academy, and St. Francis High School for this purpose.
Mass is held at the shrine of Our Lady of La Leche which gives the students an opportunity to walk
around the shrine and learn about the history there. After Mass, which is said in both English and
Spanish, Bishop Estévez visits with the students. According to Spanish teacher and event chaperone
Mrs. Janalene Phillips, “The students really enjoy this field trip because they get the chance to meet the
Bishop and, of course, take selfies with him.”

Thanksgiving Food Drive
Outreach to the poor, hungry, and those in need –
especially at Thanksgiving – has been a long-standing tradition at Bishop Kenny High School. The annual
Thanksgiving food collection provides us an opportunity as
a faith-based community in the Catholic tradition to practice charity. Furthermore, it is a teachable moment allowing us to instruct students by our actions that we always
have an obligation to care for those who are less fortunate.
The project begins in early October when we contact the Catholic pastors and extend an offer to serve the
needy within their parish boundaries. We invite them to
let us know the number of baskets requested, along with
the name of the parish delegate who will pick up the baskets. Each year the list gets longer with more and more
families in need of our assistance.
X-mod classes are assigned a non-perishable food
item to collect throughout the weeks leading up to
Thanksgiving. This is done in an effort to collect a variety of
staple items in the quantities needed. On the Tuesday of
Thanksgiving week, all of the food is brought to the gymnasium lobby where members of the BK Chapter of Saint Vincent
de Paul sort the items and assemble the orders for each parish.
Included with each ‘food basket’ is a gift card for a turkey or
ham to be redeemed at the recipient family’s local grocery
store. Funds for the gift cards were made available through
the generous donations made by administration, faculty, staff,
parents, clubs, and athletic teams, making the food drive a
school-wide collaborative effort.
Bishop Kenny students assembled enough food baskets to
provide Thanksgiving dinner for 400 families!
In an open letter to his colleagues, Deacon De Luca
shared the following:
“Thank you for another successful Thanksgiving Food Drive.
Because of your generosity the BK community was able to provide
more than 400 families with a food basket at Thanksgiving. A
$15.00 gift card accompanied each of the baskets. Additionally,
we were able to donate two truckloads of non-perishable food
items to the Trinity Rescue Mission.
A very special thank you to X-mod teachers and students,
Club sponsors and their constituents, coaches and athletes, and
members of the faculty and support staff for your generosity.”
Apply to Host an
International Student at BK
Bishop Kenny High School is pleased to
welcome international students to Jacksonville
and the BK community. In addition to taking
advantage of the academic program offered at
Bishop Kenny, international students are eager
to take part in a real cultural experience by living
with an American host family. Interested families should live within a 30 minute commute
from the school, have a spare bedroom, and be
prepared to provide the student with three
meals daily.
The Bishop Kenny Interact Club answered the call for trees at the
new Rainbow Workshop at L’Arche Harbor House. One tree was
planted in thanksgiving for the faculty and staff of Bishop Kenny
High School, and the other in thanksgiving for Bishop Kenny’s own
Cheryl O’Connor for her many years of dedicated work at L’Arche
Harbor House. Two residents and the executive director from
Harbor House were also on hand for the presentation.
20
If you are interested in learning more about
the possibility of opening your home to an international student, please contact Bishop Kenny's
home stay partner, gphomestay at
[email protected] or by phone 781-9960429. Host families receive a monthly stipend of
$1,100 and will be trained and supported by
gphomestay.
Bishop Estévez Visits Campus
Bishop Felipe Estévez made his annual visit to BK on December
2. As tradition dictates, the BK community, including members of the
Advisory School Board and special friends, gathered for the celebration of the Eucharist in the gymnasium with Bishop Estévez serving
as presider. Father Houle concelebrated Mass with Deacon De Luca
serving as Deacon of the Word and Table. Fulfilling the first of Bishop’s
Mass Day traditions, Bishop Estévez announced at the end of Mass
that he would continue the tradition of granting a day off for the
entire school community. Bishop was quick to add that Mr. Orlando
would coordinate the day off with the school calendar.
Immediately after Mass, Bishop Estévez processed along with invited guests to the Chapel for the dedication of a Statue of St. Augustine.
Bishop also took the time to meet with Extraordinary Ministers
of Holy Communion in the Bishop Tanner Chapel engaging in a
friendly conversation with the students. Bishop presented each
Extraordinary Minister the gift of a Jerusalem Cross key chain as a sign
of his appreciation for their service to the community.
In keeping with tradition, the senior class enjoyed an outdoor
cookout on the senior patio and under a tent that was erected for the
occasion. Students had the opportunity to enjoy an extended complimentary lunch and also had the opportunity to meet and greet
Bishop Estévez in the more casual outdoor setting.
Statue of St. Augustine
Dedicated in Honor of
The Most Reverend Felipe J. Estévez
10th Bishop of St. Augustine
In celebration of the 450th anniversary
of the founding of
St. Augustine, Florida
December 2, 2014
On his annual visit in December, Bishop Estévez
blessed a Statue of St. Augustine erected in his
honor and in recognition of the 450th anniversary
of the founding of St. Augustine.
Eucharistic Ministers presented Bishop Estévez with a hand painted Image of
Our Lady of La Leche. Pictured with Bishop Estévez are (l-r) Margaret Pritchard,
Ashley Bucher, Lindsey Harrison, Joseph Ponce, and Fr. Michael Houle.
Bishop Estévez Proclaims a Jubilee Year
The Most Reverend Felipe J. Estévez, Bishop of the
Diocese of Saint Augustine, declared that the period from
August 27, 2014 to September 8, 2015 be a Jubilee Year in
the Diocese of Saint Augustine. In so doing, he encouraged all of the faithful, in union with their pastors, to commit themselves to the New Evangelization or, in other
words, to know and bring the Good News to our corner of
the earth. He encouraged parish priests to lead and
encourage parishioners to make pilgrimages to the historic Catholic sites that our See City has to offer.
Bishop Estévez entrusted the faithful during this
great Jubilee Year to our Blessed Mother under the title of
Nuestra Senora de La Leche y Buen Porto. How very fitting
since the first Mass was celebrated in Saint Augustine,
which is also the site of America’s first Marian Shrine.
Responding to this call, the Campus Ministry
Department will lead the Class of 2015 on a Pilgrimage to
Saint Augustine to celebrate Mass and visit the Shrine of
Our Lady of La Leche and the Mission of Nombre de Dios.

The FHSAA announced the Academic Team Champions for the Fall

Guidance Update
AP Results
Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Seminar
The results of the 2014 College Board AP exams arrived last fall. A student’s score
shows how well they did on the AP Exam and it is also a measure of a student’s
achievement in one or more college-level AP courses. The AP score is used by colleges and universities to determine if they will grant a student credit for what they
have already learned, or allow them to skip the equivalent course college.
Last year over 8,000 high school sophomores participated
in the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Seminar (HOBY)
throughout the United States, Canada, and many other foreign nations. The purpose of the program is to seek out,
recognize, and develop leadership potential. Selected students interact with groups of distinguished leaders in business, government, education, and various professions to
discuss present and future issues.
Students apply to become their school’s HOBY
ambassadors by completing an essay about leadership. A
school committee reviews all applications and selected the
finalists. This year, we are pleased to announce that Rachel
Blaydes and Maeghan Holzbaur were selected to be
Bishop Kenny High School’s Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership
ambassadors.
5 = extremely well qualified
4 = well qualified
3 = qualified
2 = possibly qualified
1 = no recommendation
"Qualified" means that you have proven yourself capable of doing the work of an introductory-level
course in a particular subject at college. Many colleges and universities grant credit and placement
for scores of 3, 4 or 5. Each college decides which scores it will accept.
The AP score is a weighted combination of scores on the
multiple-choice section and on the free-response section.
The final score is reported on a 5-point scale as follows:

Freshman Shelby Gogulski shows off a few pieces of her Yourself Expression jewelry collection.
Most 9th grade students have their hands full with school
work and extra-curricular activities but, for freshman Shelby
Gogulski, the end of the school day means it’s time to work on
any number of projects related to her business, Yourself
Expression, a company she started less than one year ago.
Yourself Expression is the result of Shelby’s desire to
“dress up” a pair of old boots rather than buy a pair of new
ones. With the help of 10-yearold brother Gordy, Shelby
added some homemade bows to her boots and the lightbulb
went off, “If I can do this to a pair of boots, why not find a way
to change the look of jewelry and other accessories?” And so,
Yourself Expression, a catalog and online company that offers
interchangeable jewelry and other accessories, was born.
The line is growing with items for children, adults, and
even the family pet added regularly. Shelby designs much
of the line herself dealing with the manufacturing, shipping, promotion, catalog development, and more. She and
brother Gordy are real hands-on executives of this homebased company. The entire collection can be seen at
www.yourselfexpression.com/catalog. Items range in price
from $3-$22.
Shelby, an AB honor roll student and JV soccer player
adds, “I also started this so I could go to Bishop Kenny; I
needed to help pay my way, but now, I am able to pay my
tuition entirely.” “Not only is Shelby paying her own tuition,
she is donating items from Yourself Expression to the
24
upcoming BK Boosters
auction,” added Sheila
Marovich, Director of
Development.
Shelby Gogulski ‘18
CEO
Shelby’s new business
has taken her to New York
City where she met Kathie
Lee Gifford, Kelly Ripa, and
Michael Strahan. A born
promoter, she gave them
items from her collection
which,
according
to
Shelby’s mother, they
loved. She has also been
invited to the largest merchandising event in the
country, AmericasMart in Atlanta. According to Shelby’s
mother, “A young company with a young CEO rarely gets
this opportunity. She will be meeting with thousands of
buyers for retail sales.” Good Morning America’s Tory Johnson
is also talking to Shelby about being featured on one of her
Deals and Steals segments.
Mother, Kara Anderson, and father, Steve Gogulski,
also participate in the siblings’ company, but are quick to
add “it’s mostly the youngsters’ enterprise.”
Crusader Mascot Design
Journalism Students Travel
to Washington, D.C.
We are pleased to announce that, in
addition to the highly-visible and
easily-recognized Bishop Kenny
logo, a newly-designed, official image of our
Crusader mascot has been developed and added
to the mix.
The Crusader Mascot
The Crusader was selected for BK as part of the original school charter in 1952. There has never been an
official piece of art depicting the mascot until now.
In an effort to be more aware of the Bishop Kenny
brand, an official graphic for the BK Crusader and
associated font for the BK Crusaders has been
designed and adopted as the official mascot of the
school. Versions are available in full color and in
black & white for printing on paper, fabric, specialty
advertising items, etc. If you are working on a
reunion and would like to incorporate the Crusader,
please contact Sheila Marovich in the Office of
Development for the necessary image files. Three
examples of the new graphics are shown.
Senior yearbook editors Colleen Maher, Halie Rash, Madeline Freel, Claire Gibney,
and Genni Robinson pose with adviser, Mrs. Alison Benton, at the National Zoo
in Washington, DC. The staff visited DC to participate in a journalism conference,
making time to sightsee between classes.
Five senior editors of the Crusader yearbook, accompanied by
adviser Mrs. Alison Benton, traveled to a national journalism conference
in Boston in November. The conference, hosted by the Journalism
Education Association (JEA) and the National Scholastic Press
Association (NSPA), gave students the opportunity to attend break-out
sessions and workshops covering journalism topics including photography, editing, interviewing, and design.
Mascot only
The 3-day conference was aimed at helping students find solutions to commonly-encountered publication problems. Attendees
networked with students from other schools and picked up tips to
improve publication of the yearbook. The trip also afforded time for
students to experience our nation’s capital. Student favorites included touring the National Mall, seeing animals at the National Zoo, taking a “Monuments by Moonlight” trolley trip, and visiting the
Newseum, an interactive museum of news and journalism. The sevenlevel, 250,000-square foot museum features 15 theaters and 14 galleries.

NCAA Woman of the Year
ALUMNI UPDATE
Elizabeth Niles ‘05
etting a good education was
always important to Elizabeth
Niles. After spending sixth grade in
the gifted program at one of
Jacksonville’s public schools, Elizabeth
told her parents that she wanted to
attend Holy Spirit Catholic School,
which she did for the 7th and 8th
grades. Elizabeth did so well in those
two years that she was selected to be
the valedictorian of her class, someBishop Kenny ’05,
thing she worked very hard for. Mary
Georgetown University ’09,
Niles, Elizabeth’s mother shares, “After
and Harvard Law School ’14
spending a few years as a teacher and
tutor at inner city schools in both DC and Boston, Elizabeth has
great respect and admiration for all teachers, especially the ones
she had over the years. She loved her experiences at both Holy
Spirit and Bishop Kenny and is very thankful she had all these wonderful opportunities.” Elizabeth took full advantage of all that BK had to
offer. In 2005 she graduated Summa Cum Laude from BK after which
she was off to Washington D.C. to attend Georgetown University.
G
While at Georgetown, Elizabeth was involved in many activities, both on and off campus. She held various office positions in
the College Republicans, she was a Grill Master in the Georgetown
University Grilling Society, and interned for Americans for Tax
Reform in Washington. She also volunteered as a mentor in the
After School Kids Program tutoring young men on juvenile probation, and even taught English in small Hungarian villages one summer. In 2009 Elizabeth graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of
Arts degree in Government and English with a minor in German.
After graduation from Georgetown, Elizabeth joined Teach for
America, a national teacher corps of recent college graduates who
commit two years to teach and to effect change in under-resourced
urban and rural public schools. Elizabeth was with the Greater
Boston Corps teaching English as a second language. She worked
in the program from August 2009 until June 2011. During that time
she also served as a new teacher mentor in the Boston Teacher
Residency program and earned a Master’s degree in Education from
the Boston University School of Education, Class of 2011.
Elizabeth’s next move was on to Harvard Law School where
she served as Managing Editor of the Harvard Law School Journal
on Legislation and traveled to Ghana with the Harvard Law School
Ghana Project to conduct research regarding oil and gas legislation. She even traveled to Israel with the Harvard Jewish Law
Student Association. Elizabeth was also a crew member and performer in the Harvard Law School Parody show.
Elizabeth graduated from Harvard with a Juris Doctorate
degree in May 2014. After taking and passing the New York bar
exam, she spent several weeks traveling in Greece, Croatia, Serbia,
Great Britain and France. She has accepted a position with the law
firm of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher in their New York office. We wish
Elizabeth much success.
The NCAA Woman of the Year award honors graduating female
student-athletes who participated in NCAA-sanctioned sports and
distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate careers in the areas
of academic achievement, athletic excellence, service and leadership.
Less than six months after she crossed the stage at the
University of Notre Dame’s Commencement Exercises to receive her
diploma, Tucker was back on center stage when the former Fighting
Irish women's soccer defender was named the 2014 NCAA Woman
of the Year during the annual NCAA Awards Dinner at the J.W.

Indianapolis.
Elizabeth Tucker is the
first Notre Dame studentathlete to be selected for
the prestigious honor in
its 24-year history. She
also is the first soccer player chosen, as well as the
third
Atlantic
Coast
Conference recipient.
"While I, in no way, feel
worthy or deserving of
this award, I accept it on
behalf of all the great
women in my life," Tucker
said. "I'm incredibly honored to be chosen as the

and to represent the
University of Notre Dame and all that it stands for. At Notre Dame,
we're blessed with so many resources and opportunities. It's our
obligation as students and student-athletes to give to those who are
less fortunate and don't have those same opportunities.”
"To play college soccer and be a student-athlete at Notre Dame
was the gift of a lifetime," Tucker added. "It made me a stronger,
more mature and more aware person going into the real world and
for that, I will always be grateful. I'm also so thankful to my parents,
my coaches, my teammates, my professors and all of those people
at Notre Dame who helped me along the way. I'm truly honored
and blessed to call myself a student-athlete and a graduate from the
University of Notre Dame."
Tucker emerged as the 2014 NCAA Woman of the Year recipient following a rigorous selection process that began in June when
NCAA colleges and universities nominated 446 student-athletes for
the award. Conferences then selected up to two nominees to represent each of their leagues, with the NCAA Woman of the Year
selection committee then choosing the 30 semifinalists (10 each
from Division I, II and III) and the nine finalists (three from each division). The NCAA Committee on Women's Athletes then voted from
among the finalists to determine the 2014 NCAA Woman of the Year.

Dennis Lanahan ‘58
Dennis Lanahan uses a “wine thief”
to test the progress of his wine. On
the wall is a crucifix that belonged to
his father D.J. Lanahan, a long-time
Bishop Kenny supporter.
Dennis Lanahan ‘58 founder of Mountain Brook Vineyard in North Carolina
ennis Lanahan was a member of the 1957 Bishop Kenny
Crusader State Championship Basketball Team. When
asked about BK and his experiences playing basketball
for Coach John Baldwin, Dennis is quick to say, “I tell anyone
who will listen, that having John Baldwin as our coach was the
most enduring of life lessons. There’s no doubt, he was a tough
coach but we learned that with really hard work we could
accomplish our goals; he taught us to believe in ourselves and
he taught us never to quit.” Good advice for a man who, just
twelve years ago, took a leap of faith and followed his dream of
becoming a winemaker.
D
Biltmore Winery then, in
2008, he started keeping
some of the fruit to begin
making his own wine.
The first wine was a Bordeaux-style red blend that Dennis
named Magis, which is Latin for more, or more excellent. The
Mountain Brook Winery officially started in 2011 with the first
sale of wine starting in August of 2013. “Two years ago we
introduced our first vintage of Chardonnay and, just last summer, we launched our first Vintages of Pinot Grigio, Petit Verdot,
and a Bordeaux blend.”
Today Dennis lives in Polk County, North Carolina, where
he is the hands-on owner of Mountain Brook Vineyards where,
as their website says, crafting wine is a labor of love. Dennis is
proud to point out that the winery, although quite young, is
already producing some award-winning wines. “In the first year
of our winery we have won several medals in various wine
competitions including the 2014 Finger Lakes International
Wine Competition, the 2014 San Francisco International Wine
Competition, and the 2014 Asheville Wine & Food Festival,
three medals were awarded at the North Carolina State Fair
and, most recently, two silver medals were awarded at the 2015
San Francisco Chronicle International Wine Competition.”
The Lanahan family has been a part of the Bishop Kenny
community for three generations. Dennis, the son of longtime
BK benefactors D.J. and Wanda Lanahan, attended BK along
with his four siblings. After Bishop Kenny, Dennis attended
Holy Cross College and later graduated from Jacksonville
University with a degree in accounting. He married and moved
to Atlanta to attend Emory University School of Law then
returned to Jacksonville where he practiced as a tax attorney
until 1984.
All of the wines are made of 100% North Carolina grapes,
harvested by hand, and fermented separately in oak barrels and
un-oaked stainless steel tanks. Vintages are kept small to
ensure the highest quality. According to Dennis, “We are very
fortunate to have a really good winemaker, lots of help in the
vineyard and, perhaps most important of all, we have been
blessed with a good site. But because we are so small, I do
whatever needs to be done; I mow, spray, rack wine, punch
down, run the fork truck, and pick up the barrels.”
There are four varieties in the vineyard – Chardonnay,
Pinot Grigio, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petite Verdot. The first
grapes were planted in 2002. According to Dennis, “For many
years we operated as a successful grape growing business, but
our dream has always been to create wines of perfect balance
and taste.” For the first 10 years Dennis sold the fruit to the
28
Daughter Liz Lanahan Iglesias, BK Class of ‘83 and husband
Paul continue the family tradition at Bishop Kenny. Their daughter Maria graduated with the Class of 2014 and currently
attends Georgia Tech. Sons Matt ‘15 and Robert ‘16 are still at
BK. The other four of Dennis’ five children, Charlie, Thomas,
Joseph and Brian attended school in Philadelphia after the family moved when Dennis went into the metals business in the
1980s.
We thank Dennis for sharing his story and his delicious
wine which was part of the Bishop Kenny auction Wine Shoppe
in 2014. We look forward to featuring more Mountain Brook
Vineyards wine this year and wish Dennis continued success
with Mountain Brook Vineyards, an obvious labor of love.

Carla Harris to Speak at Inaugural
Mary Awards Program
(L-R) Volunteer chair of
The Mary Awards, Jill
Arnold, joined Carla
Harris ‘80 and emcee
Mary Baer, WJXT news
anchor, for the filming of
an informational segment
about the upcoming
awards at the Carla Harris
Performing Arts Center
in December.
Carla Harris, BK ‘80, Vice Chairman, Global Wealth Management, Managing
Director and Senior Client Advisor at Morgan Stanley, will serve as the keynote
speaker at the inaugural Mary Awards dinner on April 30 at San Jose Country Club.
Carla is well known for her generosity on behalf of Bishop Kenny High School, particularly through the scholarship fund that bears her name. She is equally recognized not only as a business leader, but also for her philanthropy in New York
where she is involved with countless charitable organizations.
St. Vincent’s HealthCare is sponsoring the awards program to recognize exceptional young women who are seniors in high school and whose permanent address
is within the five county area including Duval, Clay, Nassau, St. Johns, and Baker. The
Mary Awards was created to promote the values, lifestyle, and leadership that recognize young women who lift up our society and serve as positive role models.
In the words of program organizers, the name
was selected because, “…whether you look at Mary
historically or spiritually, Mary was a young woman
with courage who wanted, above all, to do God’s will.
Mary lived her life faithfully with a servant’s heart.”
The awards are designed to create a forum to
encourage young women who may not otherwise be
recognized in our community. Twelve finalists will be
chosen – three in each of the four categories of
academics, athletics, leadership, and volunteerism/philanthropy. Each award winner will receive
a $1,000 cash gift from St. Vincent’s HealthCare.
…Mary was a
young woman

who wanted,
above all, to do
God’s will.
The Guidance and Campus Ministry Departments have promoted the program to the senior class and have encouraged students to apply for these awards.
Crusader Baseball
History Update
The weekend of December 5, 2015
has been reserved for a ceremony and
dinner marking the installation of a new
records board at the BK baseball field.
In the summer edition of The
Avenue we reported that a project was
underway to research and collect an
accurate history of the Crusader baseball
program’s individual player achievement
records. Our goal was to publish a completely updated record reflecting the
findings of this research in this edition of
The Avenue.
Progress in reaching players to verifying the records from 1970 forward is
not going as quickly as we had hoped.
Happily, BK graduate Gontran Celerier
’65 has recruited some help in doing the
necessary research and hopefully we will
be able to complete this portion of the
project by the end of March 2015. We
will update our progress and more specific plans for the ceremony in the summer edition of The Avenue. This will allow
ample time for past players to make
plans to attend the program next
December.
New Book Released In December
Carla Harris ‘80 has written a follow-up book to Expect to Win released in 2009. Released on
December 26, Strategize to Win offers a new way to conceptualize career strategies and gives proven
tools for successful change. According to Publishers Weekly, “Harris offers hope in this career manual both to people just starting out and to those seeking professional redirection or revitalization. She
divides the book into three major sections; “Starting Out,” “Stepping Up,” and “Starting Over.”
Strategize to Win is available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other major retailers nationwide.

Class of 1959
55 YEARS
(L-R) Classmates Joanne Priapi 59’,
Carol Cook Altenbaugh 59’ and
Earl Moccia 58’ enjoyed the opening
of the Bishop Kenny art gallery.
Members of the Class of 1959 kicked off their reunion weekend
with a Friday night picnic at Bishop Kenny.
The BK Class of 1959 held its 55th reunion on the weekend of
October 17, 18 & 19, 2014. It was the 11th reunion held by the
school’s third graduating class. Twenty-one class members and two
other graduates represented six of the seven original grade schools
that started Bishop Kenny HS – Assumption, Immaculate Conception,
St. Joseph’s at 7th and Market, St. Paul’s Riverside, St. Paul’s
Jacksonville Beach, and St. Joseph’s in Loretto – with the only school
not represented, St. Matthew’s.
Friday night the class gathered at Bishop Kenny HS for a dinner
catered by Bono’s Pit Bar B Q. This was one of their favorite hangouts
while attending Bishop Kenny. A home football game won by BK 39-0
over Stanton followed the dinner.
Also on Friday night the class took advantage of an invitation to
the Grand Opening of the new Bishop Kenny Art Gallery. Current students were excited to give our classmates a guided tour of the new
facility. We thoroughly enjoyed learning about the art program which

was nonexistent when the Class of ‘59 attended Bishop Kenny. We
also had an opportunity to engage in a discussion about the art on
display including a piece entitled, "The Passion from Behind." Many
thanks to art teacher Kelly Long and her students for the warm welcome and wonderful presentation.
On Saturday evening the class enjoyed a multi-course dinner at
Maggiano’s Little Italy followed by comments and tributes honoring
classmates that have passed away. Bobby Clark and Verne
Altenbaugh entertained the gathering with vocal and guitar renditions.
The weekend concluded with a brunch hosted by Carol Cook
Altenbaugh and Juliette Bryan Howard at the home of Carol and
Verne Altenbaugh. All who attended had a great time. Discussions
are under way to do some part of this again in two years. Look for
emails in the future.
