Specifically, it was an article on the animals one can hope to see while on safari in Africa. Turns out that among safari aficionados there are five species of game animals that are the most desirable to see and to photograph. They are known as the Big Five. They are: lion, African elephant, Cape buffalo, leopard and rhinoceros. So the Big Five who knew? I guess it makes sense. Since there is so much to see on a safari and just a short window of time to experience it, many people appreciate having a list of the most popular animals to make sure one maximizes their enjoyment. The same is true of an unfamiliar restaurant. Often it pays to ask the waiter what the most popular dishes are of that establishment. And here is where I make the connection to coins. You see, we frequently get questions from collectors about what are the most popular colonial coins to collect, if one wants just a smattering of the most popular ones. The answer I give is you guessed it the Big Five.... Colonial Coins. In the colonial coin world, the Big Five colonial coins for non specialists consist of: 1776 Continental Dollar (1785) Bar Copper 1787 Fugio Copper 1850 1C PCGS MS65RB CAC 1855 1C SLANTED 55 PCGS MS64RB N10 1856 1C FLYING EAGLE PCGS PR62 CAC S9 https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent.uid=1115662135657&format=html&print=true 2/15 11/27/13 In The Loupe & New Purchases 1652 Pine Tree Shilling (17851788) One Example of State Copper Coinage Here are some musings on each 1) 1776 Continental Dollar First off, there is that magical 1776 date. Then there are Ben Franklin's two famous sayings on the coin: "Mind your Business" [people these days sometimes think he meant, "mind your own gosh darn business, buddy". But of course he did not], and "Fugio" [which means "time flies" in Latin]. The denomination of this coin is not known for certain. We assume it was intended to be a dollar; some circumstantial evidence points to this. But at this point in history we are not certain. Another mystery: it is possible that these were all intended to be struck in silver. However, given the early US government had virtually no money to do so, only a few specimens were actually struck in that metal. Silver specimens are extremely rare; a half a million dollars would not buy you one. Luckily for collectors, many more were struck in pewter. Pewter specimens are not exactly rare but still a bit pricey in their own right. A wholesome circulated specimen will run you a few tens of thousands of dollars these days. We at HLRC hunt for these and handle a few each year. Let us know if you would like one, and we will put your wish into our computerized want list database. 2) Bar Copper Though they bear no date, these enigmatic coins were made circa 1785. They were first seen in circulation in New York City in that year. There are thirteen stripes (or "bars") on one side, and "USA" on the other. These were made to imitate the buttons on Continental army uniforms of the day. A coin simply can't get more American than this, pardner (he said with his best John Wayne accent). 3) 1787 Fugio Copper Authorized by the nascent American Congress, these are considered the first federally issued coins of the United States. 1909S VDB 1C PCGS MS64RB CAC 1901 5C PCGS PR66CA CAC 1925D 5C PCGS MS65 1937 5C PCGS PR67 CAC https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent.uid=1115662135657&format=html&print=true 3/15 11/27/13 In The Loupe & New Purchases Several million were ordered by Congress. Less than 400,000 were actually struck before the partners abandoned the project, as it was a money losing proposition. Fortunately, about 150 years ago a bag of brand new fugios was found in a vault in a bank in New York. This is the source of nearly every mint state specimen known today. Without the Bank of New York hoard, an uncirculated fugio copper would be a rare bird indeed. 4) 1652 Pine Tree Shilling This coin has it all: It was struck in silver (unlike most colonial era coinage, which was made of copper). It is dated just 32 years after the Pilgrims set foot on Plymouth Rock (though these coins were struck up until the early 1680's). It's principal design feature is an iconic, lone pine tree. The spelling of Massachusetts varies on different varieties. This may have been on purpose, by accident, or possibly even because spelling was not standardized until over 100 years later by a man named Noah Webster (of dictionary fame). All in all, a really cool & popular coin. 5) An Example of State Copper Coinage Here is where a collector's individual taste and preferences come into play. There are several good choices, as five states made coinage before the federal government decided to claim that exclusive right: Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Vermont. If you have a special allegiance to one of these five states (for example: if you grew up in New York, or your favorite team is the Boston Red Sox, or you truly enjoy the intellectual stimulation of the TV show Jersey Shore) then the choice is easy. Or you could collect one from each state. You make the rules in what you wish to collect. We don't always have all of the Big Five colonials in stock, of course, but we are always on the hunt for attractive examples. They may not be the most expensive or the rarest coins on the list, but each offers a special reason to consider adding it to your collection. 1927S 25C PCGS AU50 CAC 1839/6 1C PCGS VF30BN N1 1806 50C POINTED 6, STEM PCGS XF45 O115A R.2 A naked eye overdate that is sometimes seen in low grades, but is quite scarce in VF and higher. Features include a smooth brown, hard planchet and an absence of defects. 1807 50C LARGE STARS 50/2 PCGS VF20 O111A R.5 Bearded Goddess 1909S VDB 1C PCGS MS65RB CAC Long in the shadow of it's big brother the 1909S VDB cent the 1909S Lincoln Cent is a key coin in it's own right. This happens to be a nearly full mint red example, approved by CAC, and priced as a typical red & brown example. Here is one such instance this time found on a superhigh grade coin and accompanied with a CAC verification sticker too. 1892 50C PCGS PR65CA 1937D 5C 3 LEGS PCGS AU55 1914 50C PCGS XF45 A great contrast with the with superb proof listed above, this coin shows the same date in business strike form, and features the famous "3 legged buffalo error on the reverse. There just aren't many wholesome examples of these out there, though the current market doesn't seem to fully grasp that fact. Yet. 1799 $1 IRREGULAR DATE1 PCGS VF35 CAC B15 BB152 R.3 1883 10C PCGS PR66 Pretty toning, hard mirrors and very competitively priced. It really does look that beautiful in hand. 1857 $1 PCGS AU55 CAC 1861 $1 PCGS AU53 1795 $1 3 LEAVES PCGS XF45 CAC B6 BB25 R.3 Attractive and meaty 3 Leaves variety Flowing Hair.This example has olive gray patina throughout with a bit of crusty gold toning around the devices. We get frequent requests from customers who are looking for a nice, crusty, and fully original flowing hair dollar to represent this coveted spot in their collections. Not an easy request to fill, what with all of the cleaned, "second toning", and just plain unattractive examples around. But here we have found something special. Fresh from a collection that was sitting in a safe deposit box since the late 1960's or early 1970's until it was slabbed a few weeks ago, this is a remarkably preserved example. Rich color (but not too deeply toned), some luster, great strike, and absolutely perfect save for a single visible adjustment mark on the reverse trailing down from the eagle's right shoulder. Housed in an early generation NGC "fatty" slab and sporting a suberdesirable "Gold CAC" sticker indicating CAC thoght the coin was undergraded when they evaluated it.
