MAGOR BULL TERRIERS
Gordon and I have been breeding/exhibiting Bull Terriers for over 40 years, producing
countless champions of record in both Canada and the U.S., group and BIS winners, as
well as a goodly number of ROM (Recognition of Merit) titled dogs. Our dogs have won
the prestigious Silverwood Trophy competition 6 times. My first Bull Terrier came from the
famous Ormandy/Souperlative kennels (England) in the spring of 1964. Hungry for
knowledge about this fascinating breed, I travelled to England and specifically to
Ormandy/Souperlative kennels during the winter of 1966-67 to work and tutor under the
watchful eye of the world’s leading Bull Terrier breeders of the time, Eva Weatherill and
Raymond Oppenheimer. There is no doubt that Raymond and Eva’s influence along with
their generous capacity for sharing knowledge played a huge role in shaping the direction
we took in terms of breeding and our entire philosophy on breeding Bull Terriers. The
success we have enjoyed as breeders, exhibitors and judges today is largely due to being
blessed with these two truly gifted mentors. Gordon entered the picture in the fall of
1967 shortly after my return from Ormandy and in due course we imported Can/Am Ch
Maerdy Moonstone (by River Pirate ex a Bar Sinister daughter) from Bill Morgan (Wales).
Moonstone sired the 1973 Silverwood winner, Can/Am Ch Paupen’s Mr Wiggins.
I judged my first Championship show in September of 1978 in Birmingham, England and
Gordon joined the judges’ ranks in 1993. We thoroughly enjoy the challenge judging
presents and the opportunity it offers for continued learning.
We are located at the top of Lake Superior in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. As isolated
as we are, we think nothing of piling into the car and driving thousands of miles to attend
Silverwood, Specialities, or to take a bitch to be bred. We’re not keen on flying our dogs
and avoid doing so as much as possible. In the early 70’s we attended a show in
southern California where Eva Weatherill was judging. She was shocked to see us there
and remarked that it would be the equivalent of her attending a show in Russia, which to
her was unimaginable! Back then I suppose it was unimaginable, but we were
enthusiastic and determined, and for that matter still are. Today, the world is a much
smaller place with exhibitors travelling the continents to show and breed bull terriers; a
huge contributing factor in the progress the breed has made over these past 35 years.
For us, breeding is an expression of “living” art and a labor of love that gives us great
joy. However, as much as we enjoy competing, we always caution owners that “showing
dogs is great fun while it lasts but the years that follow with them as family members are
by far the most important years”. When acquiring a hopeful show prospect you are really
getting a “pet” first and foremost. Should he or she become a champion, that’s
wonderful, but pet or show quality, they are all champions to us!
