Joyce Taylor, raffle chair, did a really good thing getting Cheri to assist her with the raffle. They plan everything together, but while Joyce plays with the Jammers, Cheri sets it all up. We are grateful to these two special ladies for bringing the raffle back. Devil Mountain sounded great and were a lot of fun on top of that. We look forward to their return. Our Jammers sounded wonderful as usual. Congratulations to Don Abel for running such a good show, especially since the stage was over flowing with great musicians. Where else can you hear top notch live music for four hours for $8.00 or $10.00 dollars? We are fortunate too, to have great food provided by the Elks Wives Club, all volunteers. Bring your friends to share this wonderful experience May 22nd. Mission Gold is the band of the month. See you all then! Barbara Kinney, President FEEDBACK WELCOME This newsletter was first printed in June 1971 soon after the organization began holding music sessions. And, yes, copies of those are in files belonging to the Society. The are a single page with many items on both sides, but the bottom third of the backside is left blank so it can be folded and mailed to members. The second issue from July carries a memorial to Louis Armstrong, and the back side has the first column of Blowin’ Round the Bay. Wouldn’t it be a luxury to have the time to trace every page of that history and wonder who is left in our membership to remember those who pioneered us to where we are today? The names Joyce Taylor and Don Brayton jump out in that first issue, so 1971 carries on into today’s volunteer artists who had professional careers even then. There was a time in the 80’s when this newsletter had 24 pages, but the membership was around 600. There were even Letters to the Editor. Today it is only eight pages as you see. There are times when today’s President and this Editor are chatting when we wonder how many copies of the 250 that are printed are actually read and enjoyed. There must be a good audience somewhere as advertisers continue to want their messages sent through us. If you received this in the mail this April you received it as a benefit of your membership. And as a member if you feel you want you’d like to add your two cents worth of thought, be our guest. Even better, if you’ve ideas to share, become a participant at our Board meetings or even volunteer to serve on the Board. The current Board is aging out and would welcome new faces. That doesn’t go so far as changing our goals; we were set up as being dedicated to preserving traditional jazz. Yes, your feedback is welcome. Do chime in. 2016 BOARD MEETING Special Memberships TUESDAY, JUNE 7, 2016 SUSTAINING The ELKS Lodge 11:30 a.m. James & Helen Goodwine Suzanne Shynne Sallie Morton Cecelia Maloney Jack & Rada Ford Ron Seigel ANGEL ($500) (double) Richard & Amy Magnuson Pat & Shirley Campbell 375 N. MISSION GOLD Jazz Band With a name inspired by the golden hills above Fremont's Mission San Jose, Mission Gold is an eight piece, two cornet band consisting of a variety of multi-talented musicians from all over the Bay Area. MGJB was formed in 1980 and has a long tradition of performing the music of Jelly Roll Morton, King Oliver, Lu Watters and Turk Murphy. The band plays standards and more common tunes in the swing genre. John Soulis, leader and trombone player has been playing New Orleans jazz since he was ten years old. He played with Emperor Norton’s Jazz Band in the 1980’s and considers the late John Maloney as a mentor. Others in the band are: Bob Sterling on tuba since the early 1990’s, Roz Temple on piano who plays both stride and ragtime, Jack Wiecks on banjo who has played Fresno Dixieland Society www.fresno dixie.com Box 16399, Fresno, CA 93755 HOTLINE (209) 292-3999 12- 5 p.m. RADISSON HOTEL ATRIUM in many bands familiar to SBTJS, Dick Williams on cornet is a very familiar face; he has experience with lots of bands and leads SBTJS Jam Sets. Bert Thompson began on drums at age ten in his native Scotland and has played in a U.S. Army band and many California bands. The other cornet is Rich Newcomb, also seen with a trombone with other bands, Clarinetist Ray Buhler founded a band at age eighteen in his native Switzerland, but was sidetracked by education and career. He resumed playing in 1998 and now plays with Mission Gold and Toot Sweet. Newest member of the band is drummer Marc Messier, a senior at San Jose State whom John has known since he was a member of the youth band John formed twelve years ago. Mission Gold’s main goal is to please the dancers, strutters, and jazz listeners. We offer a variety of Dixieland styles, including Marches, Blues, Ragtime and Stomps. We encourage audience participation during tunes reminiscent of the cakewalk, parasol strutting and to raise their voices to sing along with the band.
