September 2012 Salom advances to final round of state TOY Congratulations to Irene Flores-Salom, a teacher at Sambrano Elementary School, who is not only the Region 19 Elementary Teacher of the Year but also one of three finalists for the Texas Elementary Teacher of the Year! San Elizario ISD was notified on August 16 that Salom was one of three candidates from a pool of twenty regional winners whose application was selected to move on to the final round for the Texas Elementary Teacher of the Year (TOY) competition. She was surprised with the news of her selection as a state finalist on August 20 when Principal Marta Alvarez made the announcement at a luncheon for faculty. She will next travel to Austin to be interviewed by a panel of judges on September 15 with the winners to be announced at the Texas TOY Awards Ceremony in October. Salom received the regional honor on August 13 at the annual Region 19 TOY Awards Gala held at the El Paso Convention Center. She was selected for the award from a group of 10 candidates nominated by area school districts and will represent the Region 19 service area at the Texas TOY competition to take place this fall. Salom had previously been named the San Elizario ISD Elementary Teacher of the Year in May. Salom began her career in San Elizario ISD five years ago and has served as a teacher for the 4-5 ASC Special Education unit. She earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Texas at El Paso in 2007. San Elizario ISD would also like to recognize CTE teacher Bonita Whittington from San Elizario High School who represented the district in the secondary Teacher of the Year category in the Region 19 competition. Whittington has been an educator for over 23 years with 16 of those as a teacher at San Elizario High School. She has also served as a sponsor for several student organizations including Business Professionals of America, National Technical Honor Society, and UIL Academics. Bilingual Ed./ESL Thalia & Daniel United Way online campaign The United Way of El Paso County is transitioning into an online pledging system called PledgeLink as part of their annual campaign. San Elizario ISD is currently working with United Way to explore options for employees who would like to contribute to the agency through payroll deduction. PledgeLink is a new electronic giving Sept. 3 option that allows employees access to a secure website where they can review their personal information and record and submit a gift. Please stay tuned for more information on the giving options proposed as well as instructions on how to pledge. As always participation in the United Way fundrasing campaign or that of any other charitable organizaition is voluntary.
