State expected to cut payments to recoup $168 million error
Local governments across Illinois are expecting less
money from the state this year as Illinois recoups a $168
million overpayment.
Originally called a glitch, the overpayment was a processing error by the revenue department. Roughly 6,500
taxing bodies in Illinois received more personal property
replacement tax than they should have.
School districts will be hit hard by the overpayment.
Hoopeston Area will take cuts totaling $75,094.43,
while Rossville-Alvin’s overpayment was for
$12,557.65.
Hoopeston officials learned of their overpayment as
they readied for the city’s new budget. According to
state records, Hoopeston was overpaid by 23,319.78.
Neighboring communities with overpayments include
Alvin, $67.94; Rankin, $77.21 and Rossville, $429.03.
Townships are not immune, as Grant Township will
receive $5,106.25 less, plus an additional $8,310.92 for
Grant road and bridge. Butler will be docked $915.92
plus $1,079.20 for its road and bridge, and Ross,
$676.58 and another $504.69 for road and bridge.
Vermilion County’s overpayment was $171,545.77; and
$13,526.23 for the county airport authority; and
$26,087.21 for the conservation district..
In Iroquois County, Milford’s share of the mistake is
$1,402.09; $1,473.68 for Milford Township: $338.49
for the park district: $701.04 for the fire protection district: $24,465.77 for the schools; and $1,555.77 for road
and bridge.
Wellington village has a $534.03 overpayment and the
fire protection district’s total is $328.09.
Lovejoy Township’s is $338.39 and the road and
bridge overpayment was for $1,210.61.
Prairie Green Township will have to make up $41.21
in overpayment and another $111.34 for road and
bridge.

Barbara Egnew will celebrate her 106th birthday on
April 27 and would enjoy hearing from friends. Cards
and letters may be sent to her c/o Heritage Health, 423

Hoopeston alley cleanup will begin May 2, weather
permitting. This is for yard waste only—grass, leaves,
brush, etc. Other items, including concrete, plastic,
wood, or bricks, will not be picked up.
Residents whose property is not on an alley may put
piles of waste curbside for pickup.
Hoopeston town-wide rummage sales will be held May
27-28. The fee to participate is $5, with money to be donated to New Beginnings Church. Anyone interested in
being listed on the official map for the sale is asked to

College for Kids brochures available
College for Kids 2016 brochures are now available at
Honeywell, Maple, John Greer and Hoopeston Area
Middle School, along with The Sewing Boutique, Treasured Roots Flower Shop, Mr. B’s/Global Fashions,
Chrysler of Hoopeston, Crown Ford, Rossville Grade
School and DACC Higher Learning Center.
Free senior lunch
CRIS Health Aging Center will host a free senior
luncheon at noon Tuesday at Hoopeston Multi Agency,
206 S. First Ave. Reservations are required. Call the
Multi Agency at (217) 283-5544 by noon Monday to
reserve a seat.
The luncheon will feature guest speakers and CRIS
Bingo with prizes and gift cards.
Taco dinner to support band
Hoopeston Area High School Marching Band students will hold a taco dinner from 5-6:30 p.m. Monday in the high school cafeteria.
The dinner will be followed at 7 p.m. by a talent
show in the high school auditorium. Students and
teachers will sing, dance, act or simply make fools of
themselves.
Admission is $2 for students and $3 for adults
Two tickets to Vans Warped Tour on July 23 in
Chicago will be raffled off during the evening.
All proceeds support the Marching Cornjerkers,
who are raising funds in anticipation of attending the
2017 Outback Bowl in Tampa, Fla.
