TRAIL CONCEPT:
This trail, combined with the Onanole Trail, provides a link from Riding
Mountain National Park to the Trans Canada Trail. As the TCT runs
parallel to the Park, at varying distances, over its 175 km length between
Russell and Neepawa, the concept is to connect the TCT with special places
on the south edge of the Park. This is the first such connecting link. It
essentially begins at the Wasagaming townsite and proceeds to Onanole
townsite via the Onanole Trail. The Elk Link Trail continues southward to
the Trans Canada Trail.
TRAILHEAD:
The Elk Link Trail begins at the Elk Park on #10 Highway in Onanole, MB
POINTS OF INTEREST ON THE TRAIL:
The Elk Link provides community connections, and along the way, you can
also enjoy terrific views, beautiful countryside, lakeside and riverside rest
stops, historic buildings, a trestle bridge, picnic areas, bed and breakfast
facilities, Wildlife Management Areas, and even overnight campgrounds at
each of the town sites.
CONVENIENCES:
Public washrooms are located at the trail head and in each of the townsites
shown on the trail. Public Campgrounds are available at each townsite.
Restaurants, stores, and groceries, and some accommodations, including
bed and breakfasts, are also available in or near the towns. A paved
aerodrome (CKQ6) is located at Erickson.

Bicycle rentals are available in Wasagaming.

TRAIL DISTANCES:
Wasagaming to Onanole via the Onanole Trail: 4 km
Onanole to Ditch Lake cottage community: 9.4 km
Ditch Lake to the Trans Canada Trail Junction: 6.4 km
COMMUNITY LINKS:
From the TCT/Elk Link junction, it is 5.5 km to Erickson, MB travelling east;
or 16.6 km to Sandy Lake, MB, travelling west. Both destinations are
reached by following the Trans Canada Trail.
TRAIL STYLE AND USE:
The Elk Link Trail is composed of some paved, but quiet, roads, some
municipal gravel roads, and newly constructed pathways through natural
areas. There is one challenging hill on the Elk Link (at Lee’s Lake Lookout),
otherwise, travel is easy to moderate.
The Trans Canada Trail is a converted rail bed, allowing easy bicycling
and walking.
SHORT TRIPS OR MULTI-DAY TRAVEL:
The Onanole Trail, Elk Link Trail, and Trans Canada Trail can all be
accessed at numerous points. So trips can be easy and brief with out and
back travel, or users can plan longer trips, including shuttle pick up at the
end, or round trips using existing country roads as well as the trails, or
multi day excursions with overnights in campgrounds or paid
accommodation.

Continues to provide partnership support for this trail system.
PROPERTY USE DONOR:
One of the best sections of the Elk Link Trail traverses the private property
of Norval Lee, who resides near Erickson, MB. This section also adjoins the
Proven Lake Marsh.
