It’s that time of year again, to believe in miracles
and what can be. HOPE had a few miracles this year
that we would like to share. (OK, they might not
technically be miracles but they are happy-ending
stories.)
Kathlyn Glynn volunteered at HOPE doing transport
before she moved to Georgia. When packing for the
move, her cat, Pepe, escaped out the door and
couldn’t be found. Kathlyn and countless others
helped search for Pepe but he was nowhere to be
found. Eventually, everyone thought Pepe had died.
Two years and two months later, a cat was found in
Racine County and brought to a veterinarian. The vet
said the chance of this cat having a microchip was
slim. When they scanned the feline for a microchip, it
came up as Pepe! Kathlyn was so excited to be reunited
with her lost cat, she drove from Georgia to get him.
Kathlyn also had adopted Pepe’s sibling, Slick, and
they were so happy to be reunited. While they were
always close, they have now become inseparable.
Pepe has no desire to go outside anymore and always
comes running when he hears Kathlyn’s voice. We
believe microchips are so important to help find lost
animals. Please read Maureen’s article on page 7 to
learn more about microchips.
Most of you will remember the story of Reggie &
Douglas from the July 2012 newsletter. Reggie has FIV
and Douglas was at HOPE for quite some time.
Thanks to Jo Labre’s fostering and Julie Pietkivitch’s
big heart they are together in a loving home. Julie will
never understand how grateful we are that both of
these hard-to-adopt cats have found a forever home
and are truly loved. (See the picture of Reggie &
Douglas in their stroller on page 4.)
Through the kindness of two men, two difficult-toadopt animals are now living in caring homes. Harold
Kobbervig adopted Anjel, a very affectionate cat
when she gets to know you but very skittish with
strangers. Harold decided to adopt Anjel even after
hearing about her jittery ways and after months of
Anjel’s antics of hiding under the bed, she has found
her forever home. Thanks to Harold’s patience and
understanding Anjel is now in good hands as she
adores him. He is indeed her angel.
Craig Nelson had just lost Alice, an adopted HOPE
canine, a few months before Fifi came to HOPE. Fifi
was supposedly a 3 year old, dog-friendly beagle mix.
She actually was a 10 year old with dog aggression
and a number of health issues. We were concerned
about Fifi’s future outside of the veterinary clinic most of our fosters have dogs and she couldn’t go to
a home with canines. After contacting Craig to ask for
the favor of fostering Fifi, Craig went to meet Fifi and
said he would foster her. After months of fostering,
Fifi (new name Fiona) is much healthier and is living
the life of luxury! Craig is doing a wonderful job with
Fiona and she is almost ready for adoption.
Boo Boo came to us through one of our transports
from Georgia. When he arrived we found out that his
leg had been broken but never fixed. The veterinarians
weren’t sure they could save the leg but after having
surgery Boo Boo went to a loving foster home to
recover with all four paws. Through the outpouring of
support and genuine concern for Boo Boo, we were
able to pay for most of his medical expenses. The
donations were obtained through a Pedigree grant to
be used for any medical procedures, Tina Moodhart's
50/50 raffle, and the Hope Safehouse Facebook
contacts.
Tina Moodhart, Boo Boo’s foster, was instrumental
in getting Boo Boo back on his feet. Boo Boo now has
his cast off and is expected to make a full recovery.
Tina decided to do a DNA test on Boo Boo to find out
what mix of breeds he was and she turned it into a
50/50 raffle for HOPE. (Please see page 5 for the
winners of the raffle and to find out Boo Boo’s
different breeds). Boo Boo is now a wiggly bundle of
joy waiting for his forever home.
Please know your continued support of HOPE
makes these and other happy-ending stories possible.
Without you, HOPE would not be able to provide the

If you like our organization, tell people!
It’s easy to help HOPE by doing what you do ever yday - search and shop the Internet.
Go to www.goodsearch.com and enter HOPE Safehouse as your designated charity. Ever y time you
search the Internet through the GoodSearch website, HOPE will receive a penny. GoodSearch is
powered by Yahoo so you will get the same great
results on all your searches.
You can also help HOPE receive money by shopping online. Go to www.goodsearch.com and
locate the store you would like to shop and if you
have HOPE as your charity we will receive a
percentage of your sales. Don’t forget to check
the coupons of your favorite stores that are listed
on GoodSearch. HOPE can receive money from
airline ticket purchases to pharmacy purchases to
clothes purchases to pet supply purchases. Hundreds of stores you shop on the web ever yday are

I just wanted to share with you that
the pup we adopted 8 years ago from
you passed away peacefully early
this morning. Tucker was diagnosed
with t-cell lymphoma in late January
of this year. His last days were heartbreaking, but we were able to give
him some happiness by taking him to
the beach and through the woods
www.hopesafehouse.org
where he could smell the wonderful
fall air. He swam in Lake Michigan
for the last time yesterday and was
truly in heaven.
Tucker was born April 26th, 2004.
I volunteered to help you with the
pups as they came in from Indiana on
a Friday in late June 2004. The
puppy I had ended up being named
Tucker. He was so precious—just
wanting to sit in my lap and cuddle.
That is when a news crew came to
film the story about all the puppies
HOPE rescued. They ended up filming me with Tucker laying in my lap
and that footage was on the news.
Since we already adopted a pup six
months prior to fostering Tucker, I
was trying to remain strong and kept
saying we are only fostering him.
What I couldn’t help was that I had
fallen in love with him instantly. You
have to know that our first pup was a
real handful —when the HOPE
volunteer handed us Owen (then
Elf), he said “good luck with this
one”. He was right because Owen
was a very challenging pup for first
time owners. Tucker was the exact
opposite...he was mellow and just
wanted to snuggle with you. When it
came time for the meet n’ greet, I had
to have my husband take him
because I was too emotional about
it—but yet trying to remain strong
about it. (We became foster failures.)
We were beyond happy to have him
in our lives. These past 8 years have
been nothing but joy for us with
Tucker. He wasn’t a typical dog as he
would not fetch or was even interested in toys whatsoever. Again, he just
wanted to hang out with you. We did
manage to tap into his “lab” side
with swimming. That is one thing he
did up until the day he die. We put
up a pool for him and he would dive
under to fetch toys and bring them
out one at a time. When he was diagnosed with cancer, they had given
him only a few months to live due to
the aggressive nature of his particular
cancer but we managed to keep him
happy for much longer. These 8
months were the most precious that
you can imagine. Tucker’s passing
has left a gaping hole in our lives as
we miss him beyond words, but
he also gave us immeasurable
happiness these last 8 years. Thank
you for what you do and thank you
for bringing Tucker into our lives.

Here’s a pic
of Tucker two
weeks ago:
This is Satchmo (in black - formerly
Brady), snuggling with his older
brother, Webster (17). I adopted
Satchmo from you in 2005, after you
rescued him and his 2 sisters from
New Orleans after Katrina. He is a
momma's boy, even though he thinks
he's pretty tough sometimes. Thank
you for the
work that you
do. Without
you, I wouldn't have this
sassy, loving
fur-ball. :)

Hi!
Luce is very full of energy. She is
nothing like the dog we met when we
visited her at the foster home. She
loves to bark (and bark and bark...she
even barks at the leaves that rustle in
the trees!) and loves to chew on her
outdoor chain thinking that she can
free herself. If we go out of town she
stays at my mom's house. She has a
Yellow Lab and a Chesapeake Bay
Retriever. Luce gets along VERY
well with those dogs and listens and
behaves well over there. She does not
like my brother's dog (German
Shepard) but we think that may be
because that dog is a little hyper and
always in her face.
Luce does have periodic seizures,
maybe 4 - 5 a year. We do not have
her on any medication yet. We discovered that Luce HATES going to
the vet.
As annoying as the constant barking
is, we love Luce and glad she is a part
of our family! :)

Here is the happy girl! She has been
the sweetest and really came out of
her shell. My mom still has Amadeus
and he is great!

Good evening,
On August 17th of this year my
fiancé and I adopted a cute little guy
named Boz.
Things are working very well for our
family. Boz has been to the vet and
everyone there loves him. He has
also gotten to a healthy weight of 49
pounds. Boz gets two walks everyday. He also gets plenty of play time
with his tennis balls and rope toys.
He has been a remarkable addition to
our family and we thank you for
allowing us to give him his new forever-home.
Thank you so much.

Dear HOPE,
This donation is in memory of
Pumpkin, beloved furbaby of Kathy
& Terry Van Parys.
I enjoyed hearing Kathy tell the story
of how she only intended to foster
Pumpkin while Pumpkin needed
medications – but Pumpkin quickly
stole their hearts and she had found
her forever home.

We adopted Zander (Dug) a few
months ago, absolutely love him!
Please keep the dog class deposit; I
would like it to go to Boo Boo’s surgery. It breaks my heart to see some
humans have such disregard for those
little bundles of love and joy. Thank
you for all you do, I know we have
benefitted from your program….
Zander (Dug) is such a sweet loving
dog!

GOOD THINGS COME IN MICRO PACKAGES
Millions of pets are lost each year
and, unfortunately, only a small percentage of them are reunited with
their families. A lot of people think
this could never happen to them, but
then a repairman leaves the door ajar
and the cat slips out, or a child leaves
the gate in the back yard open and
the dog disappears. Collars and tags
are essential, but they can fall off, be
stolen, or become damaged. Microchipping your pets greatly increases
the chances of being reunited with
them if they become separated from
you. Research has shown that microchipped pets are up to twenty times
more likely to return home than those
that are not microchipped. In fact, it’s
estimated that approximately 1 out of
every 11 pets that’s microchipped will
eventually use that chip to return back
home.
A microchip is a tiny computer
chip, about the size of a grain of rice,
housed in a material that's compatible with living tissue. Each microchip
has a unique code that can be read
by the radio frequency of a hand-held
scanner. A needle is used to implant
the microchip under an animal's skin,
usually between the shoulder blades
for cats and dogs. This procedure is
typically done by a veterinarian.
Microchips are designed to last for
the life of an animal and do not need
to be charged or replaced. Once
implanted, the microchip code can be
entered into the manufacturer's database along with your contact information. Most veterinarians and shelters
now have scanners that can read the
microchips in the stray pets that are
brought to them.
Microchipping is not an infallible
means of identification and does
have some disadvantages. While the
majority of microchips remain fixed in
the spot they are implanted, some
migrate away from the original location, making accurate scanning of
the animal difficult. Further, some
studies suggest that microchips are
responsible for tumors and cancer in
certain animals. Also, since microchipping is a proprietary industry,
there are a variety of microchip companies, each maintaining its own
database and unique scanner. While
there is now a national database
where all brands of microchips may
be registered, a separate registration
fee is required. Also, while there are
now universal scanners available that
are able to read all microchips, not all
facilities receiving stray pets own such
scanners.
No method of identification is perfect. The best thing you can do to
protect your pets is to act responsibly.
Keep current identification tags on
your dogs at all times, consider
microchipping your cats and dogs as
reinforcement, and never allow any
of your pets to roam loose.

THANKS!
(cont. from pg 3)
to say a big thank you to Desiree Davis for fostering and helping with the birth of Bo Peep’s puppies and in
making sure their lives were safe, happy and healthy. HOPE couldn’t do it without all your help and love.
Thank you to HOPE volunteers and their canine companions who visited approximately seventy 2nd graders
at Olympia Brown Elementary School in November. They taught the children the importance of spaying and
neutering their pets, how to safely greet a dog, how to respond to an unwelcomed dog, and the wonderful
potential that exists in all dogs. The children then spent time interacting with all the visiting volunteers and dogs.
Thank you to M&I Bank (n.k.a. BMO Harris
Bank) and Laura for donating a gift card to
HOPE.
Thank you to PEDIGREE Foundation and
Petfinder Foundation for awarding HOPE a
grant for medical needs. The grant money
helped pay down Boo Boo’s leg surgery. This grant
combined with the generous donations of our supporters have helped pay for Boo Boo’s medical expenses.
Pedigree would love to hear your happy adoption stories. If you would like to share your story, please go to
Facebook.com/PEDIGREE or on twitter @Pedigree
US.
Thank you to St. Lucy’s for holding their
pet blessing on August 19th
and donating the offerings to HOPE.
Thank you to Piggly Wiggly #343 on Washington Ave
for donating items to our animals.
Thank you to Belinda Sauro who has maintained our
website for years, free of charge. We cannot thank
her enough. You may have noticed our website has
changed and how wonderful it looks - that is all thanks
to Belinda. Belinda runs a business hosting and

Thank you for another successful "Cause for Paws"
auction. On October 5th we held the auction at
Fountain Hall in Sturtevant; thank you to Fountain
Hall for the use of the facilities. Thank you to Jason
Bennett of Team Trivia who had Tim Jirik DJ the event.
It was a great evening of bidding on items and
playing Pink Dingleberry and our new game of Cash
for Crap. Thanks to Bob Brinza & Brian Swiertz for
manning the Cash for Crap game, there sure was a
lot of laughter in that corner! We also had Pig Races
(not real pigs) that had people squealing (Sorry, I
couldn't resist.) which was donated by Dave & Vicki
Baclawski.
The event wouldn't be possible without the many
volunteers at the auction and those that made raffle
baskets, desserts and numerous other things.
Thank you to the auction committee who spends
numerous hours making sure the auction runs
smoothly.
Of course a big thank you goes to those that
attended the auction and bid on the wonderful items.
We hope everyone can make next year's auction on
Friday, October 4, 2013.

Thank you to Michele Bachmann, owner of Grapes 2 Glass for hosting, organizing and running HOPE's first
puppy shower and Sarah Yanakowicz for coordinating this event. Bo Peep and Bebe came from Georgia and were
pregnant when they arrived. After both girls gave birth, we had a total of 11 puppies. To celebrate, Grapes 2
Glass had a beer & wine tasting puppy shower. There were wines and beers for
tasting and purchase with some private labels named for Bo Peep and Bebe. Bo Peep
and her puppies made an appearance for the first half of the party and Bebe and her
puppies closed the party.
There were raffles to be won, appetizers to be eaten and beverages to be consumed.
It was a great afternoon.
Thank you to everyone who came to join in the celebration!
Thank you to all our volunteers for helping out, donating baskets, providing food and
countless other things. Also, thank you to those that brought shower gifts! We were
given toys, treats, homemade blankets and sweaters.
Thanks to Timothy Prust for his photography services and designing the wine labels!
The best news: All the puppies have since been adopted!
Here is a picture of Bebe working the crowd at the puppy shower.
