Who We Are
Literacy for Life Programs
Get Involved
Literacy for Life is a nonprofit
organization committed to teaching nonliterate adults to read, write and speak.
As a result of these English language
communication skills, individuals are
empowered to:
FAMILY LITERACY
Literacy is about more than learning to
read and write. It means being able to
do the simple things we usually take for
granted – reading the newspaper, following
a recipe, ordering from a restaurant menu,
writing a letter to a friend, or simply
sharing a storybook with a child.
•
•
Begin a positive cycle of familywide literacy that carries through
generations
Understand the basic English and
number skills needed to thrive in
everyday life
•
Pursue increased opportunities for
employment, housing and health
•
Strengthen their relationships through
the higher self-esteem that comes
with education
To help adults reach their goals, Literacy
for Life works with volunteer tutors who
are partnered with students in a oneon-one setting optimal for learning.
Assures that parents are literate and
able to be active participants in their
children’s early learning.
LITERACY
Based on assessing and meeting the
individual needs of each student, as
well as providing support to enable
students to utilize community
resources.
When you give the gift of literacy, you
give the gift of a higher quality of life.
ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)
Serves as the first step in language
acquisition for non-English speakers
and offers complete assessment to
determine the literacy level of
each student.
CALIFORNIA MEN’S COLONY (CMC)
Tutor training and instructional
materials for lessons with nonliterate inmates.
WORKPLACE
Utilizes the workplace as a learning
center by training employees of the
organization to be tutors.
CITIZENSHIP
While we ask each learner to set
individual literacy goals, many of our
students have achieved such goals
as becoming a U.S. Citizen or passing
the GED.
