L M S F A L L 2 0 1 5 the MIDDLE PAGES Hey students! Have you heard of the new Black Knight Days? If not, the Black Knight Days are special activity days that “promote school spirit and physical fitness,” according to Mr. Herr. Mr. Juba told us we are supposed to have twelve this year. Each team of teachers gets to plan three. “This is a great way for students to interact outside of class,” said Mr. Dandridge. So next time we have a Black Knight Day, make sure you hang out and have fun! The teacher that hosts WLMS is Mr. Willman. He’s also the one who is responsible for the afternoon announcements. There are many important elements of the morning broadcast. There are usually four randomly selected eighth graders who present the announcements. They announce the weather, sports news, and other important information. You may not know that there is also a tech crew who works behind the scenes to broadcast live on the classroom televisions. They train very hard to make sure you get to hear and see your daily morning announcements. 2015 LMS Harvest Dance On October 22nd the first dance of the year was held here at Landisville Middle School. It was a night for the seventh grade students to experience their first middle school dance. At the dance there was a karaoke room where students could choose a song they’d like to sing to. Also, a photo booth was available where students could enjoy taking pictures together for the cost of only $0.50 per picture! If the students got hungry or thirsty, they could buy snacks and refreshments at their convenience in the lobby. During the dance there was a dance off between two eighth graders. They danced to the songs the DJ played. There was an upbeat mood because of the amusing lights that were displayed. December 11th is the next school dance- we hope to see you there! Mr. Feifer’s Writing Circle Mr. Feifer holds a writing circle once every marking period. These writing circles are open to students, staff, friends, and family members to come out and explore creative writing. Students and staff have said that these writing circles are a pleasure to have and participate in. The Nobles’ team English teacher, Mrs. Anderson, said writing can be used to remember memories, whether they are sad or joyful. She also added that the writing circles are like therapy to many people who take advantage of them. Mr. Feifer offered his opinion of what he thinks about his writing circles. We asked him, “Why do you have the writing circles?” He replied, “I’ve been holding writing circles here at LMS for the past eighteen years. They create a safe space for people to come and write in a fast, free way. People are serious, but often silly. The writing gets written with the heart as much as the hand.” We also asked him, “Do you do any other writing circles outside of Landisville?” He answered, “I share the writing circle with various shelters, detention centers, drug recovery programs, and other schools.” Another question we asked was, “What’s the reason you started having the writing circles and the biggest reason why you enjoy having them?” He answered, “I was inspired by a writing workshop I had taken; it inspired me to start the writing circles here at LMS, and I enjoy the sense of community created by the writing circles.” These writing circles are enjoyed by many students, staff members, and parents. 2 FALL 2015 LMS Mrs. Moser’s Buddies Mrs. Moser’s buddies are seventh and eighth grade students who help out Mrs. Moser and the kids in her class. They help with games, gym class, and special activities. During a gym class they may ride the stationary bikes and then play games. The games they play include kickball, various types of tag, floor hockey, etc. Interview with Mrs.Moser: Q: What do you like about having classroom buddies? A: “What I like about having classroom buddies is that the students can have friends from other classes and teams and can do special things like crafts and games. Also, I like to get to know other kids in the building.” Q: How do the buddies help you? A: “Buddies help me clean up and help my kids with their social skills. They also help by making crafts for Meals on Wheels. They keep me interested by telling me new jokes.” In conclusion, Mrs. Moser loves having buddies in her classroom to encourage new friendships. Mrs. Moser is always looking for help, and she likes having new buddies and helpers. 3 FALL 2015 LMS The Terrible Bonster It was a normal day in the quiet, wooded town of Swanky Moo-Moo. My family was getting everything prepared for the annual BONSTER festival. Every year, on October 31st, the people of my town would light a huge bonfire and celebrate the ancient myth of a monster called the terrible BONSTER. This monster can only be seen right in the center of a bonfire on the night of October 31st. Legend has it that the Bonster formed when the town founder, Swanky Moo-Moo, met with the beings of the forest. They were these strange, small, troll-like people that roamed deep in the forest. When meeting with these troll-like creatures, Swanky Moo-Moo was required to get supplies for a huge bonfire. Once the fire was lit, the troll people would show themselves and perform an ancient ritual surrounding poor Swanky. As Swanky was becoming paralyzed with fear, the troll people grasped his arms and pushed him towards the fire. Screams rang out through the forest, but no one could hear them. Darkness fell over the forest as Swanky gasped his last horrible words, cursing the troll people and swearing that every year on October 31st, his painfilled face would appear in the center of the fire and he would reach out, ready to grab hold of anyone near him, dragging them down into the fire. (DUN DUN DUN!!! Stay tuned for more!) Apple Crisp Recipe Mrs. Garrison’s homeroom had fun participating in the Great Apple Crunch activity on Friday October 30th. Ingredients: • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour, (spooned and leveled) • 1/4 cup packed light-brown sugar • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons granulated sugar • 8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter, cold, cut into small cubes • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats (not quick-cooking) • 3 pounds apples, such as Empire, Gala, or Braeburn, peeled, cored, and cut into 1/2-inch chunks • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon http://www.marthastewart.com/316288/apple-crisp Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a large bowl, mix together flour, brown sugar, salt, and 2 tablespoons granulated sugar. Cut butter into flour, using a pastry blender or two knives, until mixture is the texture of coarse meal. Add oats, and use your hands to toss and squeeze mixture until large, moist clumps form. Transfer to freezer to chill while you prepare apples. 2. In another large bowl, toss apples with lemon juice, cinnamon, and remaining 1/2 cup granulated sugar. Transfer to a shallow 2-quart baking dish, and sprinkle with topping mixture. Place baking dish on a rimmed baking sheet, and bake until golden and bubbling, 55 to 65 minutes. Let cool 10 minutes before serving. 4 ALL THINGS FALL K A R B U B T D R Q S L N L O T R U Y Y G L U O C G K E F L Q B F Q K Y D N Y E V K Z Z S P T R U B C N X G W W P X Q B Y L J M A A A K A S T D U S H G J S D Z O H E W E C V H F T R P X Q O R M G U H Q P B W S W N Z R O F Z U L F W E E L E T L S F O L U A W O O C E A I N I A F F I E B Y M R D M G B D T D Z O J U L N J E Y Z F D I A H O T L U B D A T C E P V N P N D T S T N H K I S H A U H O A P S Y W D I R C P D G K K J K M L M C V H P S T O T G A C X V E P A N S G L O E V R R N Y S L R H X P J L C L F I F A S K U S X D E I E U C E D I R Y A H R A G I H O Y P V J C A Q R U N X G C D L B L B R P H E R M R F D S O P S I F F M R Z L H L C A A I O C W C E X D L G T O B S A R S Y N H G W P M C O E K K C E B X Z R U P U M P K I N W C R X A K E K R R G G W F L E E C E L P P A B H L O S Z G Z K V WORDS TO LOOK FOR: APPLE HAYRIDE AUTUMN LEAVES BOOTS ORANGE BRISK ORCHARD CIDER PUMPKIN COCOA SCARECROW FALL SCARF FLEECE SWEATER FOOTBALL TRADITIONS HARVEST Teachers have their embarrassing moments, too. Let us share some with you… Mrs. Garrison overestimated her teacher Mr. VanAulen has gotten into trouble more than once... He just felt like taping the music teacher’s door shut… He squirts seventh graders with a water gun while wearing his Hillary Clinton mask (watch out, seventh graders!)… He has teased Mrs. Garrison’s class by dropping candy outside of his window down to her class windows. Mr. Herr tried to show his students the right way… When Mr. Herr was coaching track, he was trying to show his throwers how to squat. While demonstrating the squat he just so happened to blow out his pants where his wallet was, leaving him with a big hole in his pants! Sadly, his throwers never let him hear the end of it. 5 peers... When the school first opened, Mrs. Garrison and some other teachers thought they smelled some kind of gas leak. They also noticed a red emergency light flashing. Two of them ran out of the faculty room to safety and everyone else starting freaking out and ran out, too. Later they were told that it was just some burning toast! Poetry Corner “The Life Of A L eaf” I only have months now, Before I fall down. I only have weeks now, Before my last breath. I only have days now, Before I drift away. I only have hours now, Before I am gone. I have only moments, Before I lose my grip. I only have seconds, Before my final stand. I only have my memories, Congratulations to our As I fall from the sky. I only have my patience, As I wait for my time. I have landed. Now it is, The End. -Kyah Peifer Students of the 1st Quarter! 8th Grade: Ethan Kline Brando Koehnke Middle Pages Staff Jeremy Ables Emily Edye Megan Grube Sana Hafiz Kassie Felsinger Leighann Grove Meredith Hunter Andrew Jackson Hannah Kirk Rhiannon Mahorney Abby Murphy Kyah Peifer Ara Rudy Claudia Schmitz Monica Shenouda 7th Grade: Bridget Reheard Morgan Minnich Jacob Walker Xiao Wei Wisotzkey John Vogel Rylee Wilton Advisor: Miss Kuzma 6
