WELCOME
from the
PRINCIPAL
Studying at Redcar & Cleveland College is a great
lifestyle choice. Our team of expert tutors and support
staff are committed to creating a fantastic learning
experience for our students and helping them on their
way to a successful career.
We’ve expanded our learning provision and there’s a
course to suit everyone’s needs. While some favour the
traditional route of completing their A-levels, many others
find that apprenticeships, NVQs, BTECs (which can
qualify for university entry) and other vocational training
programmes offer a better pathway to a rewarding career.
Foundation degrees, HNCs and HNDs are also available
should students want to go down any of these routes.
We’ve also strengthened our relationships with local
companies, which have provided sustainable employment
for many of our former students. We work with employers
across a large number of sectors to identify any skills gaps
and determine which skills they need to take their business
to the next level. We’ve tailored our courses to meet these
requirements so that students are armed with attributes that
will give them the best chance of getting a job.
In short, we want our students to succeed. We listen to
what they have to say and continually review our courses
to ensure that they meet the needs of students and
employers. We’ve built a reputation for giving students
the necessary skills and knowledge they need to progress
to further study or employment in their chosen field. Our
dedicated staff possess a vast range of expertise and
many are experienced industry professionals who have
good connections in their specialist sector.
Studying here isn’t just about work, though. Our students
can enjoy a wide range of benefits including discounts on
full salon treatments and gym membership – all of which
are part of an enriched learning environment which means
they can really make the most of their time with us.
I come back to what I said earlier: studying at Redcar
& Cleveland College is a great lifestyle choice. Why not
take a look through this course guide to find out what our
students have to say about the place?

PROGRAMME
OF STUDY
The College will offer you the opportunity to complete a
Programme of Study which will enhance your learning
and employability opportunities. The programme aims to
stretch and challenge you while providing effective support
throughout your time at college.
School leavers who do not
achieve grade C or above in
Maths or English on leaving
school will be offered support at
college to work towards this and,
wherever possible, to achieve
the equivalent qualifications.
All full-time 16-19 year old learners will attend
English and Maths on a weekly basis to achieve
one of the following qualifications:
There are four key elements of the Programme of Study:
Core Qualification
Work Experience
• Entry Level, Level 1, Level 2 English
In most cases this will be a vocational area of
study such as Engineering or Childcare. All core
qualifications offer opportunities for progression to
higher levels of study or employment, so please look
carefully through our course guide to discover the
wide range of vocational areas we offer.
You will have the opportunity to complete work
experience or work related activity based upon your
core qualification and career pathway. The College
has a Work Experience Co-ordinator to ensure that
you will have meaningful work experience and
support throughout the process.
• Entry Level, Level 1, Level 2 Maths
Maths & English
Tutorials
These are essential elements of the Programme of
Study and all learners will work towards achieving
GSCE grade C in Maths and English. You may
commence on a functional skills qualification in
Maths and/or English to develop your skills in these
areas. Further information on Maths & English can
be found on the following page.
You will be supported by the Learner Progress
team throughout your time at college (further
information can be found on page 10). Tutorials
occur once per term on a 1:1 basis to support your
progress and achievement. You can also access
tutorials resources on a range of topics to enhance
your personal development, behaviour, welfare
and employability skills.
• GCSE English
• GCSE Maths
• Level 3 English
• Foundation of Advanced Maths
19+ full-time and part-time learners have the
opportunity to attend sessions both during the day
and on an evening to develop their English and
Maths skills to achieve recognised qualifications.
Additional support in English and Maths is very
flexible and designed to meet individual needs,
including workshop slots for those who miss a
lesson or need extra help. All full-time students
take an assessment of their English and Maths
skill – so any problems can be highlighted and
extra support can be provided for individual help
where it is needed.
The College will also provide additional practical and
work related experiences to ensure that learners can
develop their skills to the highest levels, to make
them more attractive to employers than ever before.

FOUNDATION
LEARNING
The Foundation Learning Programme is designed
to meet the needs of students who are not yet
ready for a full-time programme within a particular
vocational area or are unclear of their next steps.
Students may have experienced difficulties at
school or college previously and would suit
something new which provides a wide range of
different opportunities. The programme may
also be suitable for young people with learning
difficulties. The Additional Learning Support team
provide a wide range of services to meet student
needs and develop their skills.
Students will work towards an NCFE Entry Level 3
or Level 1 Diploma in Occupational Studies which
can be tailored to meet the needs of learners. Units
will include a combination of vocational tasters with
hands-on experience, Maths and English, sport and
group activities, enrichment, social development and
enhanced tutorial and study support.
The Occupational Studies qualification prepares
learners to move into one of our vocational areas
by developing their confidence, self-esteem and
ability to work successfully with others. Activities
are designed to develop learners’ social, behavioural
and employability skills.

University
without A Levels
APPRENTICESHIPS
Redcar & Cleveland College
recognises that there are different
routes through to university.
Apprenticeships are designed to provide young
people with relevant, practical training which will
enable them to progress within their chosen industry.
For example, students completing a BTEC Level 3
Extended Diploma course (equivalent to three A Levels)
can move on to a relevant degree level course. This can be
studied part-time at the College’s Higher Education Centre
and it is also a recognised entry qualification for most
universities in the country.
Apprentices are recruited just as any other employee of the company and
paid a wage or a training allowance. An apprenticeship is a work-based
programme with a strong emphasis on practical training and assessment
that is truly valued by employers. This includes NVQ at Level 2,
the technical qualification and functional skills as appropriate.
2 YEAR LEVEL 3 COURSES
Advanced Apprenticeships
Equivalent to three A Levels
Advanced Apprenticeships provide a high quality route into
work for school leavers.
Passport to HE
Level 3 courses studied over
two years are equivalent to
three A Levels and lead
to university. After one year
of study, students can
achieve a 90 Credit Level 3
Diploma qualification.
As a student of the College you can join Teesside
University’s Passport scheme. As a Passport member
you can access impartial information to help you decide
about your future, whether you want to go to university
or into work.
You are invited to Teesside University events where you will
receive help to enhance your UCAS personal statement
or CV. The exclusive Passport website has on-demand
information and resources to help you on your way – with
lots of hints and tips as you progress through Years 12
and 13 of School as well as take part in the University’s
end-of-year Passport celebration.
We hope you enjoy and benefit from this scheme, which
celebrates the partnership between Redcar & Cleveland
College and Teesside University. And we hope that it will
help you to reach your personal goal.
They are an alternative to A Levels. Each Advanced
Apprenticeship offers a young person the chance to take
a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) at Level 3 and
specific key skills.
Additionally, the Apprenticeship may include other
requirements, based on what the individual employer regards
as important for the young person and for their business.
