The Island Jewels
of the Atlantic
To visit idyllic islands where tropical seas lap up against palm fringed beaches you have to travel
to the far ends of the earth don’t you?
No! Just four hours from the UK, the Canary Islands offer picturesque beaches backed by golden
sand dunes, mighty volcanoes fringed by thousand-year old forests, natural swimming pools fed by
cascading waterfalls, and warm oceans full of life that make up one of the world’s most stunning
environments. And what’s more, they are perfectly set up for your next holiday, with numerous
fantastic resorts offering you the opportunity to have as relaxing or adventurous a getaway as you wish!
Join us as we take a whistle-stop tour of the Canaries’ main islands.
Gran Canaria
Gran Canaria is often referred to
as a continent in miniature, with
a dramatic variation of terrain,
giving the visitor an unrivalled
range of sights to see in a
compact and manageable area.
The green and leafy north merges
into swathes of ancient Canarian
pine forest, for which the island has
been granted UNESCO biosphere
reserve status. Meanwhile, the
south of the island offers stunning
desertscapes dropping to beautiful
beaches and the temptingly warm
Atlantic Ocean. As the most
populous of the Canary Islands,
there are plenty of cultural activities
too, from exploring the historic and
architectural delights of Las Palmas,
the island’s capital, to the great
shopping and dining opportunities
offered in the resort towns of
Maspalomas and Puerto Rico.
Our Resort Pick
Bahia Blanca
Ideally situated at the southern
end of the island, near to both
Puerto Rico and Amadores
Beach, the resort enjoys a
south-facing hillside location,
meaning each and every
apartment catches the sunshine
throughout the day, and all
have unrestricted views of the
shimmering Atlantic Ocean.

Lanzarote
Tenerife
Fuerteventura
With a year round delightful
climate and an average
temperature of 22 degrees,
Lanzarote is known locally as
The Island of Eternal Spring. A
real sense of getting away from
it all prevails here, perhaps due
to the island’s other worldly
volcanic landscapes of black
and red rock which tempt the
visitor to explore, leaving their
day to day lives far behind.
Lanzarote’s gastronomic
delights are extensive, with
a wealth of fish dishes from
the warm seas, as well as
delicious local cheeses.
However, the jewels in the
crown are the island’s own
Malvasia wines, so special
that they have their own EU
Designation of Origin, similar
to Champagne or Stilton
cheese. A great way to get
to know the island is to visit
its wineries where walls of
volcanic stone help to shelter
the vines. You might well find
your next favourite tipple!
Attracting over 10 million
visitors a year, Tenerife is one
of the world’s most in-demand
holiday hotspots, from the peak
of Mount Teide to the sandy
beaches on the oceanfront,
Tenerife’s landscapes are
consistently spectacular, offering
great opportunities for outdoor
activities such as hiking and
cycling. Golfers are also in
paradise here, with eight
courses across the island,
where the pleasant climate
means that you can enjoy a
round 365 days a year.
Sitting in the Atlantic Ocean
off the coast of Morocco, the
glorious weather conditions
make this island the ideal
holiday location. A great
destination for those wanting
to experience something other
than the typical holiday resorts
and complexes, Fuerteventura
is ultimately the great beach
holiday that is perfect for those
seeking quiet relaxing strolls
along pristine, untouched and
undeveloped beaches as far as
the eye can see.
For serious shoppers, the
opportunities to grab a
bargain in Tenerife are world
famous, while the younger
generation will revel in a
trip to Siam Park, Europe’s
premier and biggest water
park. With incredible water
slides up to 28 metres high
and lush tropical vegetation
it’s an unmissable experience!
Our Resort Pick
Club Las Calas
Situated in Puerto Del
Carmen, Club Las Calas is
on the doorstep of all the
shops, restaurants and bars
that this popular resort town
offers. Consistently receiving
excellent feedback and
reviews from our exchange
guests, Club Las Calas really is
a DAE members’ favourite.
Our Resort Pick
Atlantic Garden Resort
Situated in the town of
Corralejo, Atlantic Garden
resort is just a stone’s throw
from the nearby sand dunes
and local beaches, but also
benefits from being in the
heart of the action. Nearby
there is an abundance of
restaurants and bars offering
a wide variety of local and
international cuisine, but
the resort is still able to
maintain an air of seclusion
to ensure a totally tranquil,
relaxing holiday.
Our Resort Pick
Fairways Club
A stay at this resort is
guaranteed to relax and
rejuvenate. With outstanding
views of the sea and the
mountains, Fairways Club is
in a sought after location in a
secluded part of the island just
minutes from two premier golf
courses. The large swimming
pool with an island pool bar
offers such a great place to
enjoy the sun’s warm rays that
many guests struggle to leave!

Tenerife top tips
As well as getting to grips
with the major tourist sights
when on holiday, sometimes
it’s even more rewarding
to have some insider
information from locals
about their own ‘must sees’.
With this in mind, Pat May,
DAE’s Business Development
Manager for Spain, the
Canaries and Portugal and
long-time Tenerife resident
suggests the following:
• The harbour of La Caleta,
Adeje is a lovely place to sit
by the sea-front and watch
the local fishermen bring in
their catch or to try a local
fresh fish restaurant. One of
the most popular in the area
is La Masia.
• The Barranco del Infierno,
known as Hell’s Ravine, is a
popular trail through the ravine
to the highest waterfall in
Tenerife. Limited to only 300
people a day to help preserve
the environment, booking is
8 | AUTUMN 2015 holiday access
essential so make reservations
at www.barrancodelinfierno.es
in advance to guarantee
your place.
• Tagana is one of the oldest
villages in Tenerife. The road to
get there is not for the feinthearted but the reward for
the effort is a peaceful village
descending down the slopes of
the forested Anaga Mountains
down to the Atlantic Ocean
with a stunning beach and
some great walking trails.
• Puerto de la Cruz is not as
well known for its beaches as
other towns on the island, but
Playa del Socorro will surprise
you with its black volcanic sand
and clear waters. Access is by
stairway but all conveniences
are there including a relaxed
beach bar.
• Local markets – there are
a variety of markets dotted
all over the island with
the main gatherings being
held on Tuesday, Thursday,
Saturday and Sunday. If you
fancy a really exotic market
experience then visit the
market of La Señora de Africa
in the capital Santa Cruz.

Lodge Park Holidays Explained
Alex Brown discusses why
your next exchange should be a
lodge park holiday.
Ever considered dipping an
exploratory toe into the waters
of a holiday lodge? Packed with
alternative and innovative features,
lodges are becoming a highly
desirable and a welcome break
from the standard bricks and

usually on offer. DAE is at the

Enjoy the South West of England
As the old adage goes, there’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing! And as the South
West of England enjoys the mildest climate in Britain, it’s a great place to visit outside of the
busy summer season. Once the maddening crowds have left and Devon and Cornwall return to
their tranquil normality, grab a jumper (and just possibly an umbrella) and enjoy!
Cornwall without
the crowds
With its dramatic
coastline, picturesque
villages with quaint fishing
harbours and beautiful
beaches, it’s easy to
understand the popularity
of this stunning county at
any time of year. In the
summer the attractions
can often be overly
busy and crowded, but
delay your visit and the
county abounds with
loads of opportunities
for enjoyment.
For the food lovers
amongst us, Cornwall
attracts celebrity chefs
in their droves, with
famous restaurants
including Rick Stein’s Café
in Padstow, Jamie Oliver’s
Fifteen in Watergate Bay
and Nathan Outlaw’s
eponymous Outlaw’s in
Rock to name just a few.
There are of course many
more hidden gems serving
local produce, and when
in Cornwall, don’t forget
to enjoy a lovely Cornish
cream tea, a local Cornish
pasty or just relax on an
evening with refreshing
glass of local cider!
Outdoors, ambling along
one of the county’s many
sandy beaches on a crisp
winter’s morning
is probably preferable
to a hot and crowded
August day!
14 | AUTUMN 2015 holiday access
Indoors, there is an
abundance of stately homes
to explore nearby. Famous
examples include Cotehele
House and Gardens near
Saltash and Prideaux Place
at Padstow. Meanwhile,
one of Cornwall’s premier
tourist attractions, The Eden
Project is open every day of
the year except Christmas
Day and a visit is even more
enjoyable in the cooler,
quieter months.
Some very recent tourist
attractions in the county are
the locations for the BBC
series Poldark, filmed earlier
this year at sites including
St Agnes Head with its
iconic engine house, the
bleak Bodmin Moor and the
beach at Church Cove. For
full period drama effect, visit
when it’s misty and wet
and who knows - you may
get to see them filming the
next series!
Our Resort Picks
For the delicious culinary
delights of Padstow and
Rock, Lakeview Country
Club is a great location,
while Clowance Estate and
Country Club is perfect for
exploring the more recently
famous sets of Poldark.
Meanwhile, St Mellion
International Resort
provides great access
to both Cornwall and
Devon, and benefits
from two fantastic
onsite golf courses.
The delight of Devon
Yes, Devon is nice in summer, but how
much of the real Devon will you actually
see beyond the crowds during this busy
period? Going between September and
May will not only allow you the luxury
of space and time to discover all that the
county has to offer, it will also let you meet
the locals and get a real sense of how life
in Devon is once the tourists have left.
Barnstaple is the main town of North
Devon and also the centre of the Tarka
Trail – a 180 mile cycleway with lots of
off road sections which are perfect for an
enjoyable ride in the slightly cooler spring
or autumn months. For those who seek
slightly less active pursuits the town offers
art exhibitions, fashion shows and live
entertainment, plus the Christmas Light
Switch on is known to draw crowds from
far and wide.
Away from the town, the wild and beautiful
landscape of Dartmoor with its famous
ponies was the inspiration for Arthur
Conan Doyle’s classic, Sherlock Holmes
and The Hound of the Baskervilles and
more recently was also the backdrop for
the film War Horse. To really appreciate
the national park’s solitude, a visit in
autumn or winter is a must.
Being able to walk along a deserted beach
is one of life’s little pleasures and add in
the opportunity to include your four legged
friend and your holiday becomes a real
family event.
Beautiful beaches in North Devon such as
Woolacombe, Croyde, and Westward Ho!
are all dog friendly out of season.
Our Resort Picks
For those wanting to access the beaches
of North Devon, Croyde Bay resort and
Mullacott Park are great bases and both
offer easy access to the attractions in and
around Barnstaple. Meanwhile Passage
House Club and Hope Barton Barns offer
rural bliss, and both are pet friendly. The
ever popular Osborne Club on the English
Riviera is also a great option at any time
of year.

are ready to start planning
your next exchange, there
are some key points to bear
in mind.
– How to fin
1) Bank your
own week of
accommodation
into our exchange

to maximise
opportunities.
As soon as you know that you
won’t be using your own week
or weeks, it’s worth contacting
us straight away to deposit them
into our exchange pool. We
then issue you with a holiday
credit which is valid for three
years, giving you lots of time
to find your perfect holiday. You
will need a credit to book an
exchange, because if a holiday
suddenly becomes available
before you have deposited, you
might miss out. Banking your
week for exchange is really
easy either online or over
the phone and, of course, as
always it’s totally free to do.
2) Begin searching
our live availability
With your holiday credit in
the bank, you can now book
absolutely any available
exchange week in our
exchange pool. That’s a lot of
holidays - at any one point we
have around 15 000 weeks
available globally! But of

with new weeks being
deposited minute by minute
and new exchanges being
confirmed at the same pace.
So, don’t worry if the holiday
you are hoping for isn’t
instantly available – it doesn’t
mean that we are never going
to be able to book it for you.
Many of our members love
the freedom to search and
book currently available
weeks right away and relax
knowing their holiday is
confirmed, but others prefer
to list a holiday request.
3) Did you know
that only around
50% of the holidays
that DAE confirms

in our general
availability? Why
not list a holiday
request?
If you have got to this point
and not yet found your ideal
exchange holiday, we still have
lots of options. DAE is a request

for members who have some
flexibility in dates and locations

consider taking Gold

So, when popular weeks
are deposited, you will have
first access to them. What’s
more, we will put the week

contact you by phone wherever
possible to let you know it’s
available. All of this means that
Gold Advantage is ideal for
members looking for indemand locations such as the

such as summer holidays.

Travel Etiquette - do’s and don’ts
Not understanding or
respecting the culture
of the habitants of the
country you’re visiting is
one of the most common
bugbears tour operators
hear from local residents.
So we’ve put together a
little ‘do and ‘do not’ article
to avoid any potential
embarrassment in some of
our popular destinations
Spain
Don’t drive in sandals or flip
flops. This isn’t advised in
general, but in Spain this is
actually a criminal offence.
Do dress appropriately – Not
covering up enough in shops
and on the streets is a big
no no, especially in the more
rural areas. Unless you’re on a
beach or at the pool there’s no
reason why you shouldn’t be
respectfully covered up anyway.
Don’t complain about smoking.
Spaniards often say that people
who complain about such things
are “afraid of life”.
Do try and learn at least one
Spanish sentence – “¿habla
usted Inglés?” which is Spanish
for ‘Do you speak English?’
Asking this simple question
will not only endear you to
the locals but also prevent the
awkwardness of asking many
questions in English that aren’t
being understood.

Malta
Do relax when it comes to time
keeping, the Maltese way of
life is laid back so don’t worry
if your taxi hasn’t appeared,
unless it’s for the airport! In
that case do check it is on its

to cause you a problem.
Do drive and walk carefully,
especially in the cities –
drivers seem to come from
all directions and fit down
streets and in to spaces you
wouldn’t think were possible,
so keep alert at all times
when near traffic!
Don’t criticise Italy! Although
Italians can be very critical of
their country, they’re not keen
on accepting similar criticisms
from foreigners about their
political situation, religion,
mafia or topics related to
negative Italian stereotypes
including World War II and offcoloured jokes.
Do wear stylish clothing
if you want to fit in with
Italians as they’re very proud
of their appearance.
Don’t expect the same standard
of driving just because the

here mostly drive where the

Hungary
Located right at the centre
of Europe, Hungary remains
relatively undiscovered, with most
visitors sticking to the beautiful
city of Budapest. But the whole
country abounds with things to
see and do, so whether you want
outdoor adventure, culture, or
total relaxation in a nation famous
for its hot mineral springs and
spas, Hungary has it all!
Straddling the romantic Danube
River, Budapest is possibly the
most beautiful city in central
Europe. Architecturally, Budapest
is a gem, with enough baroque,
neoclassical and art nouveau
buildings to satisfy anyone’s
appetite. With parks brimming with
attractions, museums filled with
treasures, pleasure boats sailing
up and down the scenic Danube
and Turkish thermal baths belching
steam, the Hungarian capital is a
delight both by day and by night.
The food and wine are excellent,
great value, and in abundance.

Hungary, though, shouldn’t be
considered purely as a city break
destination. Lake Balaton, often
called the ‘Hungarian Sea’, is
Europe’s largest body of fresh
water. At 78km long and covering
600 square km, it’s an aquaplayground big enough to cater
to holidaymakers from across
Europe. Numerous picturesque
towns with excellent tourist
facilities dot the extensive shore
line of Balaton, and many have
their own beaches and marinas.
Other regions of the country
offer nature reserves, natural
thermal springs, wonderful
castles, quaint towns and
slopes covered in vineyards
producing some of the world’s
best dessert wine. With many
resorts to choose from featuring
superb facilities and a warm
welcome, Hungary really is
a holiday destination for the
discerning traveller. Some of
our member favourites include
Club Dobogomajor, Holiday Club
Heviz and Abbazia Club Hotel.
With spectacular natural scenery,
rambling medieval towns and
hearty cuisine, Poland is a hugely
under-rated tourist destination
that’s really worth exploring. In
the far south of Poland, the Tatra
Mountains rise high above the
surrounding plains and nestled in
their foothills is the resort town
of Zakopane, the mountain tourist
capital of Poland. Renowned for
its fresh mountain air, Zakopane
is a well-established centre with
many attractions all year round. In
wintertime snow enthusiasts have
slopes and ski lifts at their disposal,
while in summer visitors can hike,
cycle and climb, with many paths
and trails dotting the area. For
spectacular mountain views, head
for the heights of Gubalowka Peak or
Kasprowy Wierch by cable car. Open
all year, this is a must whatever
season you visit.
Zakopane also acts as a great base
for exploring many more of the
delights of Poland, including the city
of Krakow. This former royal capital

Poland, you will soon reach
the border with Slovakia, a
country awash with dramatic

historic towns commanding
spectacular views over large

(Don’t worry though – they
are very shy animals and like

gives an insight into how
Europe may have been many

The compact mountain
town of Donovaly is located
in the scenic Western Tatra

known as a family oriented
ski resort, the town is a great
location for holidays in both
winter and summer with a
huge variety of activities on
offer. Go for relaxing walks
or more strenuous mountain

the abundance of cycle trails
available for every level of

Also in the mountainous north
of the country, Penzion Grozek
is located in the quaint spa

Meet the Team
Chances are that you’ve interacted with one of the award winning team at DAE, be it on the
phone, via email or even met us at one of our networking events. If you haven’t yet had the
pleasure, let us introduce to you three key staff from the UK office.
Alex Brown
- Business
Development
Manager (UK
& Europe)
My role is
to promote
DAE, specifically within
the holiday lodge resort
market. The key focus of
my responsibility revolves
around introducing the
message of DAE to
resorts around the UK and
Europe, and explaining
the value added benefits
that embracing holiday
exchange can bring.
I generate and maintain
strong business relationships
with key staff members at
resorts, encouraging them
to promote the exchange
message to their owners
meaning more members
can deposit their weeks
within the DAE system
which in turn increases
holiday opportunities for all
DAE members.
My spare time is mostly
dedicated to my local Rugby
Club, both as a player and as
a committee member. I also
make my own fruit flavoured
gin, and have a keen interest in
aviation. My hope is to one day
attain my private pilot’s license.
Beryl Foulds
- Operations
Manager
I oversee the day
to day running of
DAE Europe which
includes looking
after our inbound and outbound
calls team and our admin team
- all of which is a tremendously
satisfying role with never two
days the same!
Keya Tomlinson
- Outbound
Team Leader
My role at DAE
is to contact our
members and
assist you with
your travel plans
whatever they may be. We
also help you to deposit your
holiday property, find an
exchange, advise about the
benefits of Gold Advantage
or contact you to remind
you that your credit is due to
expire so you don’t lose it.
I give all the team performance
feedback at least once a month
and especially if a member
of the team goes that extra
mile and I get the associated
feedback from the member.
On the rare occasions when
we have a problem, I will
personally oversee the
resolution of the problem and
ensure that we do everything
we possibly can to sort it to
the satisfaction of the member
(and indeed to DAE) and to
this end, thankfully we can
honestly say that our track
record of resolving any issues
is outstandingly good.
Each call we make is
different and every member
has a different story to tell
which we love to hear. My
team sit next to the Resort
Services Managers so we’re
always bobbing into their
office to get members extra
information on the resorts,
even down to how fluffy the
towels are! Working at DAE
is extremely satisfying and
finding a member a specific
week they’re looking for is a
great feeling for all of us.
My spare time is mostly
enjoyed walking, especially in
our wonderful Yorkshire Dales
perhaps sampling the delights of
a local hostelry at the end of it.
My spare time is filled with
social events with the rest of
the DAE Team and spending
time with family and friends.
I also love music and festivals
and watching any motor
sports with my dad.
I also enjoy cryptic crosswords,
knitting, socialising with family
and friends and theatre.
You can find out more about many of our other
team members by following us on social media,
where we are just about to launch our brand
new ‘meet the DAE team’ feature.
