Lustrum 2016 3 GUEST OF HONOUR We are very proud to introduce the renowned professor doctor Thomas Honegger as the Guest of Honour for the seventh Lustrumfeest of Unquendor. He is the author of many publications on Tolkien, medieval and Old-English literature. You might particularly know him from his work in the Cormarë-series by Walking Tree publishers, which he helped found. Thomas Honegger holds a Ph.D. from the University of Zurich where he had been working as assistant and where he taught Old and Middle English. yy yy yy yy yy yy He is the author of From Phoenix to Chauntecleer: Medieval English Animal Poetry (1996) and has e dited: News from the Shire and Beyond – Studies on Tolkien (1997, together with Peter Buchs); Root and Branch – Approaches towards Understanding Tolkien (1999) Authors, Heroes and Lovers (2001); Tolkien in Translation (2003); Translating Tolkien (2004); Riddles, Knights, and Cross-Dressing Saints (2004). Apart from his publications on animals and Tolkien, he has written about Chaucer, Shakespeare, and mediaeval romance. He is, since April 2002, Professor for Mediaeval Studies at the Friedrich-Schiller-University (Jena). Homepage: http://www.anglistik. uni-jena.de/personen/thomas-honegger. Thomas Honegger is our keynote speaker during the Conference on Saturday 18 June. He will give a lecture entitled 'Heroic scholars - scholarly heroes'. In his lecture he will explore how Tolkien’s scholarly work on medieval texts as well as his writing of fiction both reflect his preoccupation with questions of heroism and the legitimisation of heroic violence – and how he comes to champion forms of ‘cooperative heroism’ over that of the solitary hero who faces his foes as well as wyrd on his own. 4 Lustrum 2016 LECTURES, TALKS AND WORKSHOPS conference An important part of the seventh Lustrum of Unquendor is the Conference in co-ope ration with Leiden University on Saturday 18 June. Amon Hen mike and maggie Percival Mike and Maggie Percival are long-standing members of the English Tolkien Society. Talk: Aratalindalë costumes In August 2014, a group of Tolkien Society members led by Maggie Percival entered a set of costumes for the 'World Science Convention Masquerade' held in the ExCel Centre in London. The eight costumes, designed by Maggie and made by her with assistance from the rest of the team, were based on the eight Aratar from PHOTO BY GILES GOLDING Tolkien's The Silmarillion and entitled Aratalindalë. The aim of this illustrated talk is to give an insight into some of the thought processes behind the creation of the set as well as looking at some of the techniques used to realise them. Time and place: Sunday morning 09:30 - 10:30 hrs. Amon Hen Lustrum 2016 7 re-enactment group ennorandirrim Middle-earth re-enactment group Ennorandirrim was founded in 2010 by members of Unquendor. Ennorandirrim means 'Travellers in Middle-earth'. The purpose of this group is to create the world of Middle-earth as realistically as possible. Basing themselves on Tolkien's works they set up encampments during Fantasy festivals where they live like people from Middle-earth. These camps are inspired by the Rohirrim. Everything is made by members of the group. From costumes, furniture, utensils and tents to banners and shields. Talk: Wandering through Middle-earth Tony de Haan is one of the co-founders of Ennorandirrim. In his talk he will give an overview of the first six years of the re-enactment group, from its humble beginnings to the present day. About how it all started, about the creative process to realize the plans that were made, about the pitfalls the group encountered and more. His illustrated presentation will give a good look behind the scenes. So, mount your horses and join Tony on an exciting ride. Time and place: Friday evening 21:00 - 22:00 hrs. Amon Hen 8 Lustrum 2016 workshop sindarin for the middle-earth traveller Led by Lúthien Dulk we will explore in this workshop the basics of Sindarin or Grey-elvish, the elvish language that is most common in Middle-earth. The workshop takes the language lab approach: we'll start with a very basic vocabulary and practice the pronunciation together. After that, we'll split up in smaller groups to practice some basic dialogue that might prove handy for the traveller to Middle-earth. The workshop will also give you a taste of what the language is like, should you be interested in studying it for real. Lúthien Dulk is the daughter of an avid Tolkien enthusiast. She loves writing in Sindarin and to create artwork based on Tolkien's Legendarium. In daily life, she creates animations and works as a computer programmer. Maximum 20 participants. Time and place: Sunday afternoon 13:30 - 14:30 hrs. Caradhras workshop tengwar Led by Harm Schelhaas we will try to make sense of Tengwar or Elvenletters, the most commonly found script of those designed by Tolkien. Tengwar are often used to give books, art and merchandise a clear ‘Tolkien’ flavour. Sometimes they are used without understanding of their function as mere decoration, but often their purpose is realised and some meaning is conveyed. The Tolkien enthusiast is often curious about that meaning, and may be stumped at deciphering the Tengwar found in various places. But the writers of those texts may just as likely have been tripped up by the plethora of modes that Tolkien left evidence of. The purpose is to give some basic information in how the Tengwar work and can be used as a meaningful script. The workshop will have a rather free and flexible format. The emphasis will probably be on writing English, though a bit of Elven-tongue will creep in of necessity, and the intention is that the participants get a shot at trying to decipher some short texts. Harm Schelhaas has been a member of Unquendor for many years. He is most famous for his encyclopaedic knowledge of everything concerning Tolkien and his works. He is therefore a formidable opponent in quizzes. In daily life, he is an occasional and wayward student of Law, spending more of his time on many hobbies like heraldry, calendars, railways and tramways, playing cards, and beer, and on the care of an aged parent. Maximum 20 participants. Time and place: Sunday afternoon 13:30 - 14:30 hrs. Orthanc Lustrum 2016 9 CITY WALKS The city walks will be guided by Jan Groen. Jan is not only interested in fantasy literature, but also in history. The walks he has composed will therefore focus on the fascinating historical background of both cities. Together with some contemporary aspects Jan will show, you will get a good impression of two different Dutch cities. leiden Discover Leiden, one of Holland’s oldest cities, and its important role in Dutch history. Leiden doesn’t put all its secrets on display, so a guided city walk is a good way to get to know the city. From the Lipsius building, one of the modern University buildings, where the Con ference on Tolkien will take place, the walk leads us along the historical botanical garden, and then to the adjacent former chapel of the Dominican nuns that was used as the first building of the newly found University in 1575, the first one in The Netherlands. The walk continues along the Rapenburg, the city’s most prestigious canal. You will be shown the place where the Dutch insurgents entered the city in 1574, thus lifting the siege by the Spanish troops and bringing food (herring and white bread) for the star ving citizens. After leaving the Rapenburg, the walk leads us to the often narrow and winding streets around the Peter’s Church. This is definitely the most picturesque part of the old city centre. We will show you: yy one of the traditional almshouses, centered around a small court yard; yy the Latin School, where the famous Dutch painter Rembrandt, who was born in Leiden on 15 July 1606, attended classes; yy St. Peter’s Church, Leiden’s first church, which also contains reminiscences of the sojourn of the Pilgrim Fathers in Leiden before they left for North America. A last highlight of the walk is the Burcht, a citadel unique in The Netherlands and a good example of a 'motte' castle (a ‘motte’ is an artificial hill on which the castle was built). The Burcht offers a good view over the city of Leiden. After the morning walk those who are interested will have the opportunity to visit the Tolkien Shop just outside the city centre. Time and place: Saturday morning - 11:00 - 13:00 hrs. Saturday afternoon - 14:00 - 16:00 hrs. 10 Lustrum 2016 the hague The Hague is a city of great versatility. On the one hand it is metropolitan, a city of Court and Government with international connections; on the other it has a wealth of historic buildings and green space. A guided walk on Sunday morning will show you some of the most famous places of the historic city centre. After a short walk along the canal that formed the most important entrance to The Hague by water for centuries we enter the old shipping quarter. We pass along the house where Benedict de Spinoza, the greatest Dutch philosopher, lived during the last years of his life. After walking along the Nieuwe Kerk (new church), the first church in The Hague built for Protestant worship, and the modern City Hall and Public Library, we reach the Plein (the Square) with some of the finest old buildings in The Hague. Through two inner gates we enter the Binnenhof (Inner Court), the focal point of The Hague and for centuries the political centre of the Netherlands. Leaving the Binnenhof we walk along the Gevangenpoort (Prison Gate), the only surviving medieval gate in The Hague, and the Lange Vijverberg, which will give you a fine look over the Hofvijver and the Binnenhof buildings. The area around the Hofvijver was the playground for the nobility of The Hague, which is still visible in several buildings along the Lange Vijverberg and the Lange Voorhout. Walking from the Lange Voorhout to the Noordeinde we reach the Noordeinde Royal Palace, where H.M. King Willem-Alexander works and receives guests. Through the narrow streets of the old historic city centre we reach the St. Jacobskerk (Church of St. James), also known as the Grote Kerk (Great Church), the city’s oldest parish church. Opposite the church we can see the Oude Raadhuis (Old Town Hall), which was built in 1565 and enlarged in 1733. On our way back we walk through De Passage (The Arcade), a late 19th century glassroofed shopping street lined with many shops, the Grote Marktstraat with its department stores, and the Wagenstraat, centre of The Hague's China Town. Time and place: Sunday morning 10:30 - 12:30 hrs. Lustrum 2016 11 BEER TASTING As we all know, Hobbits like beer. And, even more than wine, beer comes in many flavours. Best known of course is lager, but there are numerous special beers too. At this tasting Henk Brassien will introduce five totally different beers after which they will be tasted and discussed. The extra costs are € 5.00 per person. Maximum 10 participants. Time and place: Saterday afternoon 17:30 - 18:30 hrs. Caradhras MIRUVOR TASTING A bit tired already of all the exciting experiences? Then come to the Miruvor tasting of Esther Brochard and Jaap van ‘t Hoff. Of Miruvor is said that it gives renewed strength and vigor to everyone who drinks it. Together we will taste different drinks and discuss the special aspects of Miruvor, so that we can sing and dance like Elves for the rest of the feast. The extra costs are € 5.oo per person. Maximum 15 participants. Time and place: Saterday afternoon 17:30 - 18:30 hrs. Minas Tirith 12 Lustrum 2016 EXPOSITIONS Among the highlights of the Lustrum will be the expositions of paintings by Jay Johnstone and Cor Blok, and the exposition of Hobbit editions from the collection of Henk Brassien. jay johnstone The English artist Jay Johnstone is inspired by the idea that The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings have been transcribed from ancient manuscripts. Using techniques from religious manuscripts, icon and fresco illustrations from the medieval period, Jay’s artwork uses a variety of mediums – oils, watercolors, acrylics, egg tempera with gold powder and leaf. Striking detail and traditional techniques give the impression of artwork that could have been produced in the real Middle-earth! cor blok The Dutch artist Cor Blok is well-known for his paintings inspired by the legendarium of Tolkien. He created more than a hundred pieces of art based on The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien himself was fond of Blok's minimalistic illustrations, and bought two of his paintings. In 2011, HarperCollins published a collection of Blok's pictures inspired by The Lord of the Rings, entitled A Tolkien Tapestry. We are proud to be able to exhibit a number of original paintings created by Cor Blok. In addition to the originals there will be reproductions to see and to buy. hobbit editions In 1975 Henk Brassien got his first copy of The Hobbit, as a birthday present. It was the start of what has become the largest collection of Hobbit editions in the world. Today Henk is the owner of more than 550 different Hobbit editions in 75 languages and from 75 countries all over the world. He is therefore also known as The Hobbithunter. In the exposition room you can see a number of special editions of The Hobbit from Henk's collection in different translations and from different countries. Time and place: Friday evening - 21:00 - 22:00 hrs. Moria Saturday afternoon - 13:00 - 17:00 hrs. Moria Sunday morning - 10:00 - 12:30 hrs. Moria Sunday afternoon - 13:30 - 15:00 hrs. Moria Lustrum 2016 13 ENTERTAINMENT cards against tolkien Imagine an evening in the Shire just after the victory over Sauron at the Black Gate on 25 March 3019. Ted Sandyman has cut all the trees in the alley behind the Mill. The old Mill has disappeared and been replaced by a huge buil ding made from red brick. Black smoke has clouded the sky. Bagshot Row is dug up, and poor homeless Gaffer wanders around with his few belongings on a wheelbarrow. A company of queer types and ill-looking tra vellers are gathered in the Prancing Pony Inn at Bree. They are sitting in the corner of the large bar, bent over a table. The room is dim and half-hidden by smoke. They seem to be captivated by some sort of card game. From CA time to time a sound of diabolic laughter RD SA GA can be heard ... INS TT OL KIE N Inspired by this story Esther Brochard, Sjoerd van der Weide and other members of Unquendor developed the game Cards against Tolkien (C.A.T.). It was played for the first time during the Unquendor summer event in 2014 and turned out to be immediately addictive. Especially for the this Lustrum Esther and Sjoerd made an extended edition of C.A.T. in English. A game you should play when darkness has triumphed over light ... For each group another quiz has been made, so each participant has a fair chance of winning the contest. There will be three sets of questions around the following themes: years, places and people.
