Superstar Carrie Underwood will continue her critically
acclaimed 2013 “Blown Away Tour.” Following an international run in June, this will bring the tour’s combined total
to over 100 shows. Hunter Hayes will continue as special
guest. “The Blown Away Tour” is presented and hydrated
by vitaminwater® and promoted by AEG Live.
The donation of $1 from each ticket sold on the North
American leg of the tour will continue to support Red
Cross disaster relief. Every year, the American Red Cross
prepares for and responds to nearly 70,000 disasters
across the United States. This donation will help the Red
Cross provide shelter, food, and emotional support for
those in need after a disaster. Proceeds from her Canadian
concerts will be donated to the Canadian Red Cross.
Carrie’s performance and the spectacular show production are being heralded by media. “Carrie’s always been
great, but now she’s in a league of her own,” shared
WTHT on-air personality Cory Garrison. “It was more
than a show, it was an experience.” The Hartford Courant
reviewer stated, “Underwood’s stage show was one of
the most spectacular in recent memory.” AOL’s theboot.
com expressed, “Leaving fans and music industry pals
thoroughly awed by the perfect storm of visuals, special
effects and, of course, Carrie’s amazing vocals,” while cmt.
com said, “Start to finish, it will be tough for any country

artist to top what Underwood is delivering on this tour.” When
Carrie performed at the Staples Center in Los Angeles earlier
this month the LA Times reported, “A spectacular production…
full of dazzling costume changes, creative staging and megawatts of musical wattage.”
Carrie’s two previous headline tours, 2008’s “Carnival Ride Tour”
and 2010’s “Play On Tour,” performed for a combined total of
nearly 250 shows with 2.2 million fans in attendance, and she
wrapped both years as the top-ranked female country touring
artist.
Carrie’s Blown Away album made history this spring by debuting at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums Chart, making
Carrie only the second country artist in the 47-year history of
the chart to have each of their first four albums debut at No. 1.
Blown Away also debuted at No. 1 on the all-genre Billboard 200
chart, making Carrie only the second country artist in history
to have three consecutive albums debut at No. 1. Blown Away
became country’s best-selling digital album debut since 2010
and has now sold a million copies. The album’s first two singles,
“Good Girl” and “Blown Away,” both reached No. 1 status earning her a total of three weeks atop the country airplay charts in
2012, more than any other female country artist this year.

Golf in North Florida: Sam

While most of the country
is waiting for the “golf season” to start, we’re in the
height of it here in North
Florida. I know we generally never go out of the
golf season, but there’s not
a better time to play here
than spring through early
summer. The days are longer, the weather is milder
and the golf courses are all
nearly perfect. For three
decades, The Players (TPC,
Players Championship for
those of you who have
been around for a while)
ramped up our thirst to
play, scheduled in March.
First at the beginning, then
in the middle and finally at
the end before making it’s

about The Players
move to May to occupy
the spot open between the
Masters and the US Open.
The move to May for The
Players has mixed reviews
so far. In the current spot
on the calendar, it’s a
natural “big tournament”
for professional golf, filling the month-long void
between the majors in
April (The Masters) and
June (The U.S. Open). But
if The Players is to ever be
considered a major it’ll
take time, the respect of
the players themselves,
and a fan base that just
can’t get enough. Right
now, buying a ticket to The
Players early in the week is
not a problem. If you want
to see the best players in
the world “up close and
personal,” buy a Tuesday
or Wednesday practice
round ticket and head to
TPC Sawgrass. It might be
the easiest and best ticket
in sports. The Players is
not only the best-run golf
tournament in the world;
it might be the best-run
sporting event around.
Fan friendly, easy access,
reasonably priced, plenty
of food and drink and the
best in the world at what
they do right there.
It's taken a while for The
Players to find a true
identity. Deane Beman’s
dream was to create a
fifth major, run by the
PGA Tour, a true Players
Championship. But you
can’t force things like that,
and the media and a lot of
fans rebelled. The move
to a permanent home was
met with some resistance
by Tour players who were
building a golf course design business of their own
and didn’t think the Tour
should be their competition. The Stadium Course
itself struggled early-on
with problems associated with being built in a
swamp. And did the Tour
want the winning score to
be Greg Norman’s -24 or
David Duval’s -3 on their
home course?

The Tour is in Ponte Vedra
because Beman brought it
here. The success and the
size of the volunteer force
at the Greater Jacksonville
Open convinced him that
North Florida was the
right place. The tournament is here because,
through a few machinations, Deane couldn’t buy
Sawgrass Country Club
and the Fletchers had the
foresight to sell the land
to the Tour for $1 to build
their course.
They’ve gone through a
lot of growing pains to
get where they are now,
even forgetting that
Jacksonville, and all of
North Florida and South
Georgia, is where their
bread’s buttered. Nonetheless, the tournament’s in
the right spot, and in the
right hands, with the right
leadership, poised to grow
in the players, the fans and
the media’s eye every year.

Sam Kouvaris has been active in Jacksonville since
1981 as a sports reporter with WJXT Channel 4
News. Sam also hosts a TV show on Monday nights
after the Jaguars game called The End Zone. He is a
member of the Pro Hall of Fame Selection Committee (which only 37 other members have the honor
to be a part of). Sam is an Emmy award-winner
and has won the Associated Press Broadcast Award.

enjoyed all of the movies I
have done in some aspect.
Some more than others. I do
this acting thing because I
enjoy it.

a movie with Wes Anderson
and am now working on a
film with George Clooney,

Goodman. Should be interesting!

golf?
BILL MURRAY: Who keeps
score? I hit some good ones
and bad ones. I judge my
round on how much fun we
have while playing.
