Ben Bennett has taken on the task of Guru of training. He will make sure
there is a trainer available for the beginners and he is looking for some
volunteers to teach. He will assist Dave Moore with the Intermediate Clinics.

Our club donated $1500 of our collected dues towards the construction of these courts. We
have asked to have a shade canopy constructed in the walkway between the new and Stadium
Courts, but that might have to wait for next year’s budget. We will keep you advised as to
our progress with our requests, but we are in line to get the Lakes Rec. Center’s tables and
chairs when they are replaced the end of Oct. The tables have umbrella’s on them and may
provide enough shade for us.

2013-2014 Tournament Program / Schedule

Welcome back pickleballers. We hope you were
able to continue to play while you were gone and
hone your skills for what we hope to be a fun year
of tournament play.
Before I get into the details of what we have
planned for this year, I would like to give special
thanks and recognition to Charlie Brumley who
served as our prior Tournament Director so
admirably. Charlie’s drive and passion for the
club was demonstrated in many areas of the club’s
accomplishments this past year and will be very
“big shoes” to fill.
Now for the upcoming season. We will continue
to have “Ladder” play scheduled for each skill
class. Tentatively, the “A” level players will be
Thursday evenings, the “B” level players on
Saturday and Novices on Tuesdays. For those of
you that don’t understand how ladder play works,
refer to the

web page which describes how the ladder is
operated and managed. We will start back up the
Intermediate and Novice ladders the 1st week in
Oct. Liz Lage will direct the Intermediates and
Candace for the Novices.
This year, beginning in October at a date to be
determined, we will have inter-club play with the
Sun City Pickleball Club. Our goal is to have two
matches per month on Sundays alternating on a
home and away basis by skill level.
The competition will consist of teams of men and
women players from both A & B Ladders.
This will be a great opportunity to play someone
different and make new friends.
As for our intra-club tournaments, we will have five (5)
this year on the following dates and times.

Please mark these dates on your calendar so you can be
sure to sign up for them when you know you will want
to participate. Sign up will be on the WBVPB website
at: http://wbvpickleballclub.org/Tournaments
This year we will be setting up 16-team single
elimination brackets for all levels of players.
Tournament play is open to all club members but,
because we will be limiting the competition to
32 players from each skill level, it is important to sign
up as soon as possible. Entries received later than 5
days prior to the tournament will not be guaranteed
participation.
Teams will be drawn at random from the list of
participants. Teams will then be randomly placed on a
bracket sheet to see which teams play each other in the
first round and potentially subsequent rounds.
There will be 8 matches in round 1, 4 matches in round
2, the semi finals (2 matches) and finals. In total, there
will be 4 rounds of matches to determine the
tournament champions of each skill level.
Be assured, that we will make the team draws and
bracket assignments as fair as possible to make for a
competitive tournament and an equal chance for all to
win.
Remember, these are single elimination tournaments
which means if your team loses, you are finished. This
is a common tournament practice and allows us to get
the tournaments completed on a timely basis. If you’re
not one of the teams to advance to round 2 or beyond,
enjoy some food and beverages, socialize with the other
non participants and watch the continuing matches
through the finals.

Welcome new member
Melissa McCurley.
She was originally from
Texas and is a Navy veteran
of Operation Desert Storm.
She is still working and is a
direct voice infrastructure
operations globally for
American Express. She enjoys playing
pickleball and tennis but she also plays a
variety of sports when the opportunity presents
itself. Some other hobbies are hiking, kayaking
and snorkeling. She played pickleball in her
driveway growing up when the family got
together.

Memberships
We currently have 237
members in our club and
growing. Our goal is to have an
excess of 275 by years end.
Welcome new members
Roger and Alice Helt.
They were from most recently
Waldport, Oregon. It is on the
central Oregon coast, 16 miles
south of Newport.
Roger was in the Managed Care field, primarily
in finance. Alice spent the majority of her
corporate years as an IT Project Manager for
Sprint.
Roger played football, basketball and baseball
as a youth. Ran in Masters track meets for
several years. Still owns a baseball glove and
plays "catch” anytime there is someone with a
glove and a ball in the area.
Alice used to play tennis and dabbles in golf.
Dancing was her primary activity.
Their hobbies consist of Reading, grandchildren
(we have 15), maintaining a house on the
coast (a never ending proposition).

A Pickleball player named Robert Schnell has met, in
his travels, some pickleball players he'd like to get
together for a doubles game. In Colorado Springs,
Colo, he met a Mr. Silver, and Diane, a mortgage
officer, then in Redding, Calif. he met a lady named
Yo and Hiram-who said, “just call me Hi!”
He would call this doubles match team;
Hi, Yo, Silver and the loan arranger.
Zero, zero, two you say for now is the hour
Senior citizens welcome; don’t be shy, grab a paddle
Just take a deep breath and get ready for battle!

Training
Preparing to receive and handle a
return of serve.
Both the server and his/her partner MUST
initially STAY BEHIND the baseline. In
addition, both MUST be UP ON THEIR
TOES ready to move forward in case of a
short return. (Common fault: standing
INSIDE the base line and/or standing
FLAT-FOOTED awaiting the return of
serve.)

The Beginner Clinics will start up the fall season on
Monday’s at 5 PM on Oct. 7th.. Tell your friends to
try out this sport. We have paddles and balls to try
out.
If you like the sport the club has new paddles you
can purchase at reduced costs.
Quick Tips for Better Play
Right now, heading into our regular pickleball season, is a good time to sharpen your playing skills and
get rid of some bad habits. Following are some
reminders that should help you with that:
Intermediate Clinics
First, always be aware of WHERE YOUR
OPPONENTS ARE STANDING.
Second, quickly decide in advance, the
TYPE and PLACEMENT of your shot to
make it MOST DIFFICULT TO RETURN, i.e. dink, lob, angle, down the center, etc. Third, CONCENTRATE on the
ball as it approaches you and watch the
paddle hit the ball. (Common fault:
hitting the ball directly to your opponent
and/or failing to focus on the ball as you
strike it.)
Shooting and recovery.
As soon as you have struck the ball over
the net, QUICKLY return to the ready position to receive the opponents return shot.
NEVER QUIT PLAYING THE BALL
even when you think you just delivered a
“killer” shot.

Free group instructional clinics for intermediate pickleball
players will begin at the WBV pickleball courts Monday, October 28th.
Who? The intermediate clinics are for players who rate themselves at the 2.0 and
2.5 levels (http://ipickleball.org/ifp-rating-descriptions/). Players at other levels are
welcome to attend, although the instruction might not be appropriate for them.
What? Each clinic will concentrate on a specific area such as court positioning and shot selection,
serves and service returns, baseline play, and net play. David Moore will demonstrate and explain strategies, participants will practice them, then participants will incorporate the strategies into game play.
When? Beginning October 28, the clinics will take place every Monday from 5:00-6:00 p.m.
Where? The WBV pickleball courts.
Why? Increase your pickleball skills and enjoyment!

THE PICKLEBALL SPORT IS RAPIDLY GROWING
The Rio Vista Rec Center at 8866 W. Thunderbird now has
scheduled time for Pickleball on Tues & Thurs from 9 to 11:30.

In Glendale, the Foothills Aquatics Center at 5600 W Union
Hills has Pickleball scheduled from 11-1pm on Mondays. Call
623 930 4600 for info about the fee.
WVA - that’s us! - has eight courts, if you live in WBV, you
may play anytime of the day and early evening hours except
during scheduled club events, and there is no daily playing fee!
If you want to socialize with friends of different skill levels,
join our WBV Pickleball club of 237 members and the current
fee is only $10 for the year!
