Route 2 802.372.5377 The Islander, August 12, 2014 Page 3 Grand Isle News Julie Dickie Well, I have been on hiatus of sort for my editorial dribble. I do kind of miss it. It is my weekly therapy. Although, it is really my own fault, as I have been on my own Pee Wee’s Big Adventure-- yes I am dating myself! Jules D’s Big Adventure: a year-long project has been an adventure for sure, sometime misadventure, fuelled with my will, determination and stubbornness to keep moving forward. I government, and yes guys, I did say that I would not write about it, but guess what, I had to write about the positive that I had experienced. As many of you know, I avoid, or at least try to avoid at all cost, political stuff, but tonight the tables turned on me, as my heartburn set in, and I sat in and nerves to the tipping point, as neighbors were in their second round of deliberations-- it was my turn. I was pleasantly relieved, in a big way, that my hearing went so well. Sometimes, it just takes a little calmness and stopping to ask the right questions to get the honest answers. Sometimes, a conversation of understanding is all it takes. Thanks to the unsung volunteers of local, small-town government volunteering your time. It is a tough job that I will avoid with a contamination suit. I am not one for rules, at all, but I will respectively accept the need for some. Do you have Grand Isle happenings that you would like to share? Be sure to send it in! News needs to be received by 5 pm on Fridays, for the Grand Isle News section, at grandislenews@ yahoo.com. Re-elect David Miller to this position because we need someone will have the experience, and guts, to uphold our legal system and protect us from the worst crimes. My husband, who is an attorney, also supports Miller because “he is the toughest litigator I’ve ever faced.” Miller combines this toughness with decades of experience that guide him when compassion may be in order. Sometimes it’s best for everyone if a case is dismissed. But when it comes to being tough, Miller has the experience to recognize when a case should go to trial. We live in what appears to be a peaceful community with little or no crime other than DUIs. But at times, fate steps in, and we are embroiled in nationally-covered crimes that make today’s true crime TV shows pale. Early " arson case that rocked our community, followed quickly by a mother drowning her son in Lake Champlain. Once in a lifetime cases? Yes. But we were lucky. We had a tough litigator on our side prepared for the very worst that could be thrown at him. I question whether his opponent, with perhaps two years of experience in practicing law, would have been up to such a challenge. He barely meets the requirements for Staff Attorney I, >=* = which, I should point out, pays less than $20 per hour. At this entry level, and the next (with = require to work under the direct supervision of Z]X a murder trial. Experience matters. Not only in bureaucratic human resources tables, but in real life. There is a reason they call it the “practice” of law. We need a man like David Miller to be our litigator against crime. Re-elect experience. Reelect David Miller for Grand Isle State’s Attorney. Sincerely, Mary Senior Harwood South Hero To the Editor: When I went to the North Hero Court House forum of the candidates for State Attorney of Grand Isle County, I was not sure which candidate I preferred. Both candidates struck me as competent lawyers willing to do an important job. But my preference became clear when responses were made to the question: “What is the toughest part of the State Attorney’s job?” Mr. Miller addressed the complicated procedural issues state attorneys must handle, but he didn’t make it clear to me why that would be the toughest part of the job. Mr. DiSabito said that the toughest part of the job comes when working with victims. He noted that some victims want to “throw the book” at the accused while other victims have a certain reluctance when it bringing a neighbor or relative to justice. (Cases of rape and/or incest come to mind as examples of situations where victims might hesitate to come forth.) I was impressed that Mr. DiSabito recognized that being fair to both victims and alleged criminals can be tough, and I saw in him a willingness to go the extra mile should he become the Grand Isle County State Attorney. I will vote for Doug DiSabito even as I thank David Miller for his years of public service. I attended the State’s Attorney candidate forum last Tuesday and was utterly appalled when Doug DiSabito accused David Miller and David Carter of corruption. Mr. Miller and Mr. Carter are upstanding citizens in our community and Mr. DiSabito threw out a baseless accusation that there was a Quid Pro Quo dismissal of criminal charges for one of Mr. Carter’s clients. The accusation shows a deep lack of judgment, respect, maturity, and propriety. If he is willing to besmirch the reputations of two people like Mr. Carter and Mr. Miller based on zero evidence, he has no business judging what criminal indictments are brought to bear. )X' Grand Isle Paid for by Reelect Miller State’s Attorney, 14 Tebeau Terrace, Grand Isle, VT . I listened carefully to the details of the case and arrived at my decision, that “beyond a shadow of doubt”, I was prepared to render my decision. He is not a politician, he does not develop policy, but his strength and gift to us is his solemn vow to carry out the law on our behalf. In the upcoming primary, David Miller’s name will be printed on the Democrat ballot, while Republicans must “write in” David Miller’s name. He treasured his time in the woods and hunted all over Vermont, Maine, Pennsylvania and Canada with his best friend Kenny Arms. He also spent several winters tending the ski lifts at Okemo. Another passion of Mike’s was his vehicles. According to Over the last six months, we’ve seen a dramatic increase in the number of families seeking food assistance from The Milton Family Community Center’s food shelf. A year ago, we served an average of 80 families a month. The last few months have seen that number swell to over 125. The families we serve live in Milton and our neighboring communities of Colchester, Winooski, Georgia, Fairfax, Essex and Westford. The MFCC food shelf is stocked solely by community donations, and we are in desperate need of help. Our shelves are nearly empty. We cannot provide a family with even the bare necessities for three to four meals. We are asking the greater Milton community to help us stock our shelves with non-perishables.
