Duo Caught On Video
Robbing South Hero Home
By: Susan Davis
Score one for social media!
“The general public gets the credit for the apprehension of the two individuals
who allegedly robbed a home in South Hero,” said Grand Isle County Sheriff Ray
Allen. “At the onset, it was going to be a difficult case-- there was no physical
evidence because the perpetrators wore gloves; no vehicle was observed and there
was nothing specific about the method of entry into the home,” said Allen, “ but all
of that changed in a matter of five minutes,” he added.
If you are one of the 250,000 “hits” who viewed the digital videos posted on
Facebook showing the robbery actually taking place, than you probably know just
what we’re talking about. But for those who are in the dark, here’s what happened.

CAUGHT ON VIDEO
Continued from page 1
Two individuals rummaged through a South Hero home on Monday afternoon, December 1. As they
nonchalantly walked from room to room, stashing a few things here and there into their pockets, they did
not realize that their movements and voices were being recorded by video cameras.
Homeowner Daren Jorgensen, who lives in California, had installed two home security cameras that
were placed in the kitchen and living room and are set up to notify him if there is motion or noise in the
rooms.
Jorgensen told WCAX-TV that he had received an email alert from the Dropcam company but initially
ignored it. “Then I went back to my computer, opened up the email and saw the home was being
burglarized,” said Jorgensen, who immediately called the Grand Isle County Sheriff’s Department.
“We had two units there in less than five minutes,” said Sheriff Allen, “but unfortunately by the time Mr.
Jorgensen sent us the video, which by the way was the best quality that I have ever seen, the perpetrators
were long gone.”
The Sheriff’s Department immediately posted the video on their Facebook page as did the Vermont
State Police.
“By the time I returned to my office I had a two-inch stack of “tips” from over 100 individuals who
had seen the posting,” said Sheriff Allen. “I called every single one and we soon were able to identify the
individuals in the video as Amy Davis (33) and Nathan White (30) both of Milton. We obtained a search
warrant, went to their last known residence but there was no sign of them.”
The
Sheriff’s
Department
sent out another message
asking for information about
the whereabouts of the two
individuals. More tips came in but
one in particular was noteworthy.
“Some people at a motel in
Essex called in and said, ‘They’re
here’,” said Sheriff Allen. “We sent
two guys over immediately and
apprehended the suspects.”
Amy Davis
Nathan White
“Nathan White remains in jail where he is being held on a state probation violation,” said Sheriff Allen.
Amy Davis was arraigned in Chittenden County Court where she pleaded not guilty. “She was released on
her own recognizance and told not to enter Grand Isle County or do drugs,” said Sheriff Allen.
Some of the missing items from the Jorgensen’s home appeared at a reputable, long-standing business
in Burlington. “The owner called me and said that he recognized the individuals and had purchased some
items and that he would be delivering them to the Sheriff’s office that afternoon,” said Allen. “Because
that individual is also a victim, I have him connected with Victims Advocacy,” he added.
“Over and above the general public who got this done, I want to acknowledge the assistance our
department received from the Vermont State Police, and the Milton, Colchester, Essex, South Burlington,
Burlington, Williston
and Winooski Police
Departments,”
said
Sheriff Allen. “This was
probably a first for us
all.”

BREAK-INS REPORTED
A number of break-ins have been reported in
town recently; please don’t be shy to report any
unusual actions you notice.
BREAKFAST WITH SANTA
A magical morning with the main man himself
will take place at the Milton United Church on
Saturday, December 13 starting at 8 am. A
delicious hot pancake breakfast will be served
with seatings at 8, 9 and 10 am. Each child will
have time to visit Santa and have a free photo
taken with him. Listen to Stories with Mrs Claus
and make a special craft in Santa’s workshop.

and children twelve and older, $4 for children
ages three to eleven, and free for children two
and under. This event is sponsored by the Milton
Family Community Center. Space is limited, so,

PARKING BAN
The overnight winter parking ban will be in
effect for all Town streets between the hours of
Midnight and 8 am. This ban is strictly enforced.
Vehicles violating the ban may be ticketed or
towed if interfering with snow removal operations.
DRIVE SAFELY
It is important to note that the Town does not
have a bare roads policy, much like the rest of the
State. We follow the practice of “Safe Roads at
Safe Speeds”. Salt used for road de-icing is less
effective at temperatures below 18 degrees and
when it’s dark out. This winter, we’ll be testing
the addition of magnesium chloride to our salt to
increase its effectiveness in colder temperatures.
During extended cold snaps, it is not uncommon
to see snow-packed roads for several days.
Many of you may be aware that our price
for salt increased 25 percent for the upcoming
winter. We’ve also been forewarned that the
entire Northeast region may experience salt
shortages in excess of 300,000 tons this winter.
This means that we will need to be extra judicious
with our salt applications this winter.
As previously mentioned, we will be mixing
liquid magnesium chloride with our salt this winter
to stretch our salt supply and improve the salt’s
effectiveness. If salt supplies start running low
we may need to mix it with or switch completely
to sand.
Castles, forts, tunnels and other similar
structures cannot be allowed in roadside snow
banks. Basketball hoops, landscape fencing
and features, and other obstructions need to be
moved out of the right of way. These items pose
a significant hazard to the safety of our residents,
as well as, our plow drivers.

It was one of “those weeks” that ended with
a change of attitude of sorts. Sometimes things
just seem a bit overwhelming during this season:
added pressures for all of us that include lack
of time, money and energy to get everything
done. It is certainly more difficult to recognize
all that is good and the spirit of the season one
is supposed to be enjoying. Truly, though, some
pressures really can help one stop and put
things into a better perspective. I have had a few
of these times in my life and it did help put me on
a better path towards happiness. I am working
on bettering that path again. A dear friend posted
this and it is a great message to think about this
mid-December week: “Yesterday, I was clever,
so I wanted to change the world. Today, I am
wise, so I am changing myself.” -Rumi

For Game Night in
Grand Isle
The Grand Isle County Mentoring Program is
having a game night for mentors and mentees. All of
the Program’s mentors and their mentees are invited
to attend a pizza and game night on Wednesday,
December 10, from 5:30 to 7 pm, in the Grand Isle
School Library.
Grand Isle County Mentoring is a school-based
mentoring program that matches community
children with adults who have similar interests. They
meet once a week for one hour in the school at a
mutually convenient time. Now is the time to think
about young people in our community who could
benefit from an additional relationship with a caring
adult. Every child who wants a mentor should have
one! Mentoring has proven results for both the
children and adults who care enough to make the
commitment of just one hour a week. Mentoring
doesn’t require an expert, it only requires your time- make a difference in a youth’s life: be a mentor.

NOTES
Sympathy goes out to the family of Adeline
“Scottie” Reilly Harrigan, 86, of Saint Petersburg,
Florida, formerly of Champlain, who passed
away at her home on November 27, 2014.
We had a really nice Thanksgiving holiday
traveling to see Sally and Gary with Lori, Wes,
and Sara joining us for dinner on Friday. We had
to change our plans because of the snowstorm,
but had a wonderful visit a day later. The Albany
area has a lot more snow then we do.
If you want to buy a great Christmas gift for
someone special, consider purchasing the new
book Clinton County Civil War Record 1861 1865 recently published by the Clinton County
Historical Association. The book is two volumes
and contains all the names of those that served
their country during the Civil War. A lot of time,
work and energy went into this project, and the
committee is to be commended for a fine job. If
you would like to purchase this book contact the
Historical Association at 518-561-0340, www.
clintoncountyhistorical.org for details.
I spent a whole evening going through these
volumes and found the information to be very
interesting. Many who served are familiar family
names, and many names are spelled a little
differently then they are now, but you recognize
the family name. It also brings to mind many
family names that I heard over and over again,
and now, they no longer have family in the area.

VTrans Seeks Public
Participation in
On-Road Bicycle Plan
To help meet the growing demand for bicycling
facilities on Vermont’s highways, the Vermont
Agency of Transportation (VTrans) has announced
an innovative initiative to assess how bicyclists use
Vermont’s roads. As part of the development of the
new VTrans On-Road Bicycle Plan, the Agency will
be using a WikiMap to gather information from the
public about where they ride and where they want
to ride on State highways. VTrans will also be holding
a statewide public meeting on Tuesday, December
9, from 6 to 8 pm, using Vermont interactive
Technologies (VIT) to explain the process and hear
from the public.
“This mapping project will gather the data that
we need to work effectively with our partners in
the bicycling community to broaden our collective
understanding of issues necessary to maintain a
safe and reliable network for bicyclists,” said VTrans
Deputy Chief Engineer, Kevin Marshia “VTrans is
committed to this important mode of transportation
and this input from our customers will allow us to
better assess where the needs are and help us to
prioritize investments.”
Many other states have adopted statewide
bicycle plans including: Oregon, Washington, North
Carolina, and Colorado. In 2008, Vermont adopted
the Pedestrian and Bicycle Policy Plan, which focused
mainly on bicycle and pedestrian vision and policies.
This new information will be used to help identify
and prioritize bicycle corridors most desirable for
bicycling. Creating a plan that categorizes corridors
by desirability and use will help VTrans.
To participate, find out more about the project
or for details on how to attend the statewide public
meeting visit http://vtransplanning.vermont.gov/
bikeplan.
Snowmobile Trail
Passes Available
The Alburg Sno Springers Snowmobile Club has
been busy preparing their trails for the upcoming
season which starts Monday, December 15, snow
permitting. To ride the VAST trails, your snowmobile
must have a current registration in Vermont or
another state, be covered by liability insurance
and have a trail pass, also known as a TMA (Trail
Maintenance Assessment). Alburgh has 33 miles of
VAST trails, but a trail pass is good for the 4,700 miles
of corridor trails throughout Vermont. Money from
the trail passes supports grooming expenses, trail
and bridge construction and liability insurance which
covers VAST and the landowners who generously
allow us to use their property. Law Enforcement
will be actively checking registrations, insurance
cards and trail passes. Trail passes are available at
Crossroads Travel Center and from club officers.
Purchase your trail pass before December 15 to take
advantage of the “early bird” discount.
The next meeting of the Club will be on Thursday,
December 11, starting at 7 pm, at the Alburgh Fire
Station. All snowmobilers are welcome.
Please note that all VAST trails are closed
prior to December 15, after April 15, and anytime
there is insufficient snow. There is a hefty fine for
violations. Trail conditions will be posted at www.
alburgsnospringers.com and www.trailhub.org.

DONALDSON PARK PROPERTY
TRANSFER COMPLETE
On December 2, the Town of Grand Isle
received a gift of immeasurable value to present
and future generations. The State of Vermont
transferred 23.1 acres of land on Donaldson
Road to the Town. While many residents
recognize this property as Donaldson Park,
until this week, the Town did not hold title to the
land. Grand Isle Town Recreation Committee
members, Shevonne Travers, Julie Dickie, Jeff
Martin, David Graham and Kate O’Neill wish to
shout out our sincere appreciation to all of the
Grand Isle Town officials, including both past and
present Select Board members, and to our State
Representatives for assisting in bringing this
dream to fruition. First envisioned as a simple
process, the transfer of land required a multitude
of correspondence between State officials,
Town officials and the federal government over
the past two years. With the deed now in hand,
the Grand Isle Town Recreation Committee
plans to repave the basketball court next spring,
begin cutting a walking trail around the park’s
perimeter, installing a disc golf course and
pursuing funds toward the construction of two
tennis courts. Although we recognize these
are significant tasks for a small community, we
remain committed to furthering the development
of recreational opportunities for town residents.
We are reveling in the good news and hope you
will share in the merriment.

Get in the Holiday Spirit
with the Grand Isle County Chorus
Annual Bird Count Approaches
The
rehearsing has
been completed, the
programs printed, each
singer has prepared as
best he or she is able,
and now, it’s time for
the show!.
This
Saturday,
December 13, starting
at 7 pm at the North Hero Community Hall, will be the first presentation
of the Grand Isle County Chorus’ 2014 performance, Sing We Noel. On
Sunday, December 14, at 3 pm, there will be a repeat performance at
the Congregational Church of South Hero.
Give you and your family the opportunity to share in the spirit of
the season by joining the Grand Isle County Chorus for some glorious
heart-warming music. Hopefully, you will return home singing some
of the tunes, or humming snatches of a chorus, basking in peace of
heart and goodwill to all.
Photo by: Sarah Rosedahl of North Hero
On Sunday, December 14, the annual Christmas Bird Count will be taking place
in the Islands and surrounding communities. Groups of birders will be out from
early morning searching for owls until dusk looking for as many different bird
species as possible. Most of them will be driving slowly along the roads searching
for the birds while others will be on foot. You are asked to remember to keep your
feeders full this week, and throughout the winter, to help the counters and the
birds. During the winter months, the birds depend on people to provide food to
supplement their diet. It is a wonderful way to brighten up your yard with great
rewards all winter long. Bird counters thank you in advance for your help.
CHAMP Receives Generous Donation
From The Island Hub
The Island Hub of Grand Isle, owned by Keith and Pat Hansen and Francis and Jean LaFromboise, recently
presented CHAMP with a check for $3,325. This generous donation will assist children and adults with special
needs who live in the Islands to participate and reap the benefits of therapeutic horseback riding.
From left to right: Pat Hansen, Keith Hansen, Roger Gibbons, Francis
LaFromboise, Jean Desranleau, and Jean LaFromboise.
CHAMP is a place where children and adults
with special needs can be themselves. Riders can
bond with a special horse and develop lifelong
relationships. CHAMP is a place where they can be
independent. They can leave behind their crutches,
wheel-chairs and therapies and ride a horse. The
riders at CHAMP are learning essential life skills, such
as: talking, signing, walking, focusing on their lesson
and interacting with their horse, the instructor and
volunteers.
Thank you Island Hub for helping CHAMP “change
lives one ride at a time!”

HOLIDAY CONCERT
The Grand Isle County Chorus has been
rehearsing and otherwise readying themselves
to share the joy of the season through song.
Will you join them? This year’s offering, Sing
We Noel, will be presented at the North Hero
Community Hall on December 13 starting at 7
pm, and they hope to see you there!
NOW IS THE TIME TO DETERMINE YOUR
100-FOOT LINE
By: Bob Ayers, Zoning Administrator
If you are a North Hero property owner
with lakeshore property and you are planning
any additions or changes to your property in
the foreseeable future, you will need to know
precisely where the 100-foot line from your
lakeshore is located. This is the perfect time
to measure this since the lake level is at about
94.5 feet now. On a calm day, go to the shore
section most inland and mark about one foot
beyond the visible high water spot. This will
be the 95.5 water level point as prescribed by
the State of Vermont. Measure from that point
100 feet, and note where on your property this
important line is. If your shore is a cliff, determine
the 95.5 mark at the water’s edge. Measure from
this point as best you can back 100 feet. This
is the current setback for any new buildings or
additions that you plan to construct. Call the
Zoning Administrator, at 372-8404, with further
questions, including cliff-measuring suggestions.

PRINCIPAL’S NEWSLETTER
By: Joe Resteghini
I’m not sure if you have seen the list of stuff
in the two raffle baskets that the PTYO is raffling
off, but let me just say that if I win either of them,
I am going to retire. One of the baskets is like
a day of beauty package, and the other is like
the family adventure package. Each basket has
a dollar value over $500, and for one dollar you
are in it to win it. Please contact the Office if you
would like to purchase a ticket.
Drawing for the baskets will take place
on Thursday, December 18 at our holiday
performance. The performance will take place at
the North Hero Community Hall at 7 pm. All are
invited. If your kiddos are long since graduated,
or you are new to North Hero, this would be a
great time to connect with what goes on at our
beautiful school.
On Saturday the 13th, the Breakfast with
Santa will take place at North Hero School from
8 to 11 am. The big fella himself is going to be
available for photos and last minute list readings.
There will be eggs, sausage, crafts, games for
the kiddos, Building Bright Futures will be here,
and the cheer meter will be tipping off the charts.
Again, you don’t have to have a kiddo at North
Hero School to come and enjoy-- all friends from
all islands and lands are invited.
The third and fourth grade will present their
economics/community service projects during
the Santa Breakfast. These projects, and all that
they involve are a highlight of every school year.
Jim Arnosky, the author of some amazing
books, was here to visit on December 4. Mr.
Arnosky had an interactive presentation, had all
of the kiddos singing, and he left us with some
amazing art. We really appreciated the visit and
are grateful to Mrs. Groff for arranging it.
The School Board graciously honored my
request to have Tuesday, December 23, which
was to be a full day for students, changed to

a half day. The North Hero teachers and staff
will take this time to honor each other after the
students leave. We often say that we work within
ten steps of each other, but never actually get
a minute to say more than a quick “hello.” We
really appreciate that we will have a few hours
to catch up, share a laugh and spend some time
with the people who are so important to each
other, and to others. This time is an investment
in wellness, and it is greatly appreciated.
Ski program information has been sent home
with students. If you have questions, concerns
or are just really excited to chaperone, please
contact me. The ski program begins on January
9.

The weather is real crazy. It’s real winter:
very cold and lately, the wind has blown, most
of the time from the northwest, which makes it
feel colder than the temperature. My flag is very
tattered-- I have a new one, but I hate to put it up
in these winds.
SCHOOL NOTES
Parent-Teacher Conferences were this past
week with nearly 100 percent attendance.
Teacher’s were pleased to have the opportunity
to have conversations with parents about their
children.
With the erratic weather, it’s been noticed that
many students are under-dressed for spending
30 minutes outside during recess. Please send
your children with extra gear in case it is colder
than expected or items get wet.
The holidays are fast approaching, and on
Wednesday, December 10, at 6:30 pm, the
School will have it’s Christmas Concert. We will
also be hosting a Holiday Luncheon on Thursday,
December 18 starting at 11:30 am.
Many thanks to Debbie and Rusty Spaulding
who are donating a tree to the School for the
holidays. Students will be creating decorations
as the holidays near.
We are still looking for volunteers to think about new possibilities for our
playground. If you are interested, please contact Edorah Rubin.
SCHOOL BOARD BUDGET SEASON AND MEMBER NEEDED
The School Board is entering its budget season, and there will be many
conversations about how to keep costs down while maintaining an excellent
education for our students. School parents are encouraged to attend the
Budget meetings of the board so that you are informed of developments.
Also, a community member is needed for the Isle La Motte School Board.
If you want to join this important civic group, please send a letter of interest
to: Robert Phillips, Superintendent Grand Isle Supervisory Union 5038 US
Route 2 North Hero, VT 05474. The deadline to apply is December 22, 2014.
BIRD COUNT
On Sunday, December 14, there will be a bird count. If you feed the birds
you can count how many of each species you have on that day at your
feeder. The other morning, I had ten mourning doves, many goldfinches and
chickadees. I don’t get in on the actual count, but I feed the birds or enjoyment.
I have nuthatches, cardinals, blue jays, hairy and downy woodpeckers and
many kinds of sparrows and juncos, if I can keep the squirrels away-- they
take over my feeders every chance they get.
EVENTS FOR SAINT AMADEUS AND SAINT JOSEPH PARISHES
An Angel Tree will be set up to receive donations on Sunday, December 14
to benefit the under-privileged children of Alburgh and Isle La Motte. Please
choose an angel from the tree in the Church, and return it with the Angel Tag
attached. This year, we are requesting gift certificates only. Suggestions are
listed on the back of the tags. Please put the value on the tag so that we can
supplement gifts as needed.
Senior Citizens Gift Bags donations must be received by Sunday,
December 14. The Gift Bags will be distributed to Alburgh and Isle La Motte
to Seniors, and we are in need of the following items in full boxes or cases
only: hot chocolate/cocoa, granola bars, tea bags, microwave popcorn,
instant oatmeal, pre-packaged peanut butter or cheese snack crackers.
Contact Denise Paradee, for more information on both of these causes,
at 796-4776.
JOKE OF THE WEEK!
“What did you get for Christmas?”
“A harmonica, It’s the best present I ever got.”
“Why?”
“My mom gives me a quarter a week not to blow it.”
HAVE A GOOD WEEK!
Breakfast with Santa in North Hero
The North Hero School students, staff and parents are unlocking the school
doors on Saturday, December 13 at 8 am and inviting all neighbors to join them for
a heartwarming breakfast with community, friends, family and Santa. If you enjoy
pancakes with real maple syrup and watching children sit on Santa’s lap, don’t miss
this event. A donation of $5 for everyone over the age of five gets you a breakfast
of pancakes with the fixings and lots of smiles.
This year, in addition to the usual festive fun with Santa, a craft fair will be
running from 8:30 to 11 am. About twenty children, from grades 3 through 6, will
be offering hand-made crafts, including: bird houses, duck decoys, wood toys,
bracelets, ornament, cards, scarves, magnets, rock pets, dog treats and pet toys.
These items will be offered for sale as part of an economics unit with a portion of
the proceeds being donated to charity. This is your opportunity to find some great
stocking stuffers while supporting hands-on education and the spirit of giving.

General Assistance Emergency Housing for Vulnerable Populations
Vermont Proposed Rule: 14E10
AGENCY: Dept. for Children and Families (DCF)
CONCISE SUMMARY: Section E.321.1(c) of Act 179 directs the
Department to “implement the eligibility system for emergency housing
to vulnerable populations that do not have a catastrophic need established
by emergency rules adopted after July 1, 2013,” and authorizes the
Department to continue adopting emergency rules until a permanent
rule is adopted. This rule maintains the eligibility criteria for vulnerable
populations in need of emergency housing established in General
Assistance rule 2652.3: categorical eligibility for individuals 65 years of
age or older, supplemental security income or social security disability
insurance recipients, children six years of age or younger, and pregnant
individuals in the third trimester, along with a point system for noncategorically eligible applicants. This rule also includes the requirement
from a 2014 amendment to 33 V.S.A. § 2103 that General Assistance
applicants shall furnish no more than 30 percent of their income toward
the cost of temporary housing.

Holiday Shopping
Made Simple
Small Business Saturday may have passed, but
there’s no reason not to shop close to home to
finish up your holiday shopping. Look at the names
on your list, and then, look around. What does your
Island friend or family member enjoy best about
living here? What part of the local flavor would you
like to share with your off-Island loved ones? Grand
Isle County has plenty to offer, especially if you are
looking for something unique and thoughtful. Here
are just a few ideas to jump-start your imagination:
Some people just don’t need any more stuff to
dust, but surely they can make room for delicious
goodies from local artisans. Chances are, no matter
the recipient, you can find something to bring joy to
their palate with the flavor and freshness that only
buying local can offer.
Hand-crafted artwork is available in all different
mediums from a multitude of artists that the Islands
offer inspiration to-- you want one of a kind, you can
get it here!
Calendars, apparel and other goods are available
from local School organizations, Libraries, Fire
Departments and Historical Societies You can aid
these important groups and the recipient can show
their support for them too-- it’s a win-win gift-giving
option!
For the outdoorsperson that you are thinking of,
but don’t know what they need: consider getting
a gift certificate to any of the local outlets that sell
hunting and fishing licenses. Come January 1, they
can get something that they will use all year long.
Gift Certificates to local restaurants make a great
gift no matter the occasion, but they are an excellent
way to take a couple off of your list. This present is
twice as nice because they are sure to enjoy it upon
receiving it and again, when they enjoy that night out
together.
A donation to a local non-profit, in the name of
the person on your list who has everything they want,
is a great gift for them and the great cause of your
choosing! There is something for every personality:
Fire Departments, Rescue Squads, American Legion,
R&R Sheriff’s Camp, Libraries, CIDER, CHAMP,
Camp Ta-Kum-Ta, Historical Societies, food shelves,
churches, Island Arts and plenty of other worthy
groups.
That’s a start. Now, get creative, and make your
own list. This holiday season, there’s no need to
waste perfectly good shopping money on gas, and
time better spent with family in lines-- look close to
home and feel good about the great gifts you’ll find!
Caring and Sharing
with Operation
Happiness
The holidays are now upon us. While this is
a festive time for most of us, we have neighbors
here in North Hero, Grand Isle and South Hero
that are worried about how they will be able to
afford toys for their children and a nice Christmas
dinner.
Caring and Sharing/ Operation Happiness is
a non-denominational program which works in
conjunction with Operation Happiness in Saint
Albans to help these less-fortunate families.
We will provide food for a full turkey dinner
with all the trimmings and then some. Families
with children will also receive toys that will be
collected through Toys for Kids of Vermont.
If you would like to help with this very worthy
cause, either by giving your time or making a
financial contribution, please contact Manon
Farnham at 802-372-9513. No special talents are
required, only the desire to help a neighbor.
If you or someone you know could use some
help this year with food and toys for Christmas,
please call Val Hunter at 802-372-5595.

Christmas elf-like activity will happen at Saint
Rose of Lima Church in South Hero-- to help, just

LCIEDC Awards
Mini-Grants
The Lake Champlain Islands Economic
Development Corporation (LCIEDC) created a minigrants program as part of their year-long initiative: Business Matters in the Islands. The program was
funded in part by the Sustainable Communities HUD grant received two years ago with the Northwest
Regional Planning Commission.
In May 2014, Snow Farm Vineyard, in South Hero, and Champlain Islands Kitchen, North Hero, each
received a $2,000 grant, and a second round of grants was conducted this fall. The winners from the final
round in 2014, each of whom received $2,000, are as follows:
Champlain Islands Nursery, Alburgh- The grant will help to fund building a greenhouse.
East Shore Vineyard, South Hero- Grant funds will purchase the basic elements needed to propagate
newly planted vines, including soil mix, planter trays and pots.
Health Hero Island Farm, South Hero- The grant funds will support building a unique walk in cooler
with CoolBot controller
Hall’s Orchard, Isle La Motte- Hall’s will use the funds to purchase a used donut machine, bowls and
mixer, which will increase the gross profit margin on donuts by at least 30 percent.
“We are pleased to note that all six projects funded by the mini-grants will boost our agriculture
economy,” said Steve Stata, president of the LCIEDC Board. Committee members who chose the recipients
included Bob Camp, owner of Hero’s Welcome General Store, Dan Farnham of Bauer Gravel Farnham, and
Chris Allard from the Merchants Bank.
