It’s September, summer is officially over and now is the time
to plan for winter activities.
By the time you read this we
will already have had our annual trip sign-up night. The board
has worked hard this year planning trips to locations that you
the members requested
through the annual trip survey.
We have three great trips this
year. Our first trip is Steamboat, the annual FSA race trip.
I encourage everyone on the
trip to come race with us and
meet fellow skiers from
throughout the Midwest. Trip
two is Vail, the hands down
favorite destination on our
annual trip survey. We have a
great trip planned, the airline is
Southwest and its non-stop St.
Louis to Denver. Finally we
have Jackson Hole always a
club favorite. This year we are
staying in new lodging (to the
St Louis Ski club).
wait list are the first called to
fill vacated spots.
Please check the website for availability. Steamboat is full and Jackson
Hole is not far behind. Please remember that we do have a wait list
for all trips. If you sign up on the
wait list your deposit is refundable
or transferable to another trip if
you choose. We encourage everyone who wants to go to a specific
destination to consider the wait list
if the trip is full. Experience has
shown that there are almost always
cancellations and members on the
A note of clarity: The ski club
purchases lift tickets for members at a “group discount”.
Most destinations will allow
guests to ADD days to a lift
ticket at the window at the
discount rate. They will NOT
however give refunds for unused lift tickets without a medical reason. Completely unused
tickets or days for which a club
member is unable to ski (for
medical reason with backup)
may be refunded. All refunds
are handled by the club, tickets
must be returned to the trip
captain. If you have questions
please review the ski area policy or discuss with the trip captain. If you decide that you
will not use all of your ski days
the best policy is to check with
other members of the group
and sell one of them your ticket.

The 2017 Trips from your Trip Director
The kick-off to the 2016-17
ski season has begun.
Our official sign-up night was
August 29th at the Manchester Elks Lodge in Ballwin,
Missouri. For future club
activities, some events will
be held at this location, so
remember this location.
With pre-sign-up, plus the
sign-up night, our trips are
filling up fast.

Vail has several openings left
and is the bargain trip of the
ski season. The last time the
club stayed/skied at Vail, the
price was $1,020 (excluding
lift tickets). Fast forward 10
years, and for only $250
more, our trip price this year
is $1,270 (excluding lift tickets). Vail is a great ski resort
for beginner and intermediate skiing. Also, one can hop
on a bus to ski a day at Beaver Creek, Breckenridge or
Keystone. So don’t delay,
sign-up for this trip ASAP.
Jackson Hole has only six
openings left. I expect this
trip to be full soon. If you
always wanted to experience
the ambiance of the American West, now is the time to
sign-up. Besides skiing, there
are two National Parks within an hour of Jackson. These
parks will still be opened
during the time of our visit.
This being the 100th year of
the National Park system,
you can experience the winter season at the parks without the summer crowds.
Sorry to say, the FSA trip to
Steamboat is now full, with a
wait list. To get on the wait
list, send in your trip application with a $100 deposit.
If you would like more information on our trips, feel free
to call our trip captains,
Carole (Steamboat), Dan
(Vail) or Paul (Jackson Hole).
More detailed trip information is in this issue of the
Sitzmarker.
Remember our next meeting
is September 19th at the
Alpine Shop in Kirkwood,
Missouri. The Alpine Shop
will be introducing their latest ski equipment for the
2017 ski season.
See you there,

Member Spotlight: Mary Robert & David Hawley
Mary Robert and David Hawley met
as colleagues around 1996 when they
were both working for Monsanto, she
as a temp, and he as a project team
representative from the UK. They
kept in touch via email after the end of
the project and much later, after divorces and changed jobs for both,
David found himself on another project in Memphis Tennessee, gave

It was at Mary’s urging that David
joined the ski club in about 2008. He While they may have needed some
first learned (sort of) to make his way convincing to take up each other’s
hobbies, neither Mary nor David
needed any cajoling when it came to
their shared interest in theater. Mary
has been acting since the age of eight
when she played one of the Von
Trapp children in The Sound of Music
in her home town of Syracuse, New
York. More recently, she has appeared in Inherit the Wind and Macbeth at Clayton Community Theatre
and in Rhinoceros at SLCC Meramec.
As a playwright, David has had two
full length plays produced, as well as
about eight 10-minute plays. His occasional forays into acting include
upcoming productions of Witness for
the Prosecution for the Kirkwood Theater Guild and Noises Off at SLCC
Meramec. The latter will be a family
affair; in his role as “Selsden” in Noises Off, David is joined by Mary in the
role of “Dotty/Mrs. Clackett”.
Mary and David prove once again that
many of our St. Louis skiers have interesting and varied lives beyond the
slopes. For further proof, catch them
in a performance of Noises Off, which
will be performed on the Meramec
campus October 5th – 9th.
See Mary & David in Noises Off October 7th!
Noises Off" comedy play will be at 7:30
pm at STLCC Meramec, 11333 Big Bend
Road, St Louis, MO 63122.
Two of our very own will be performing
--Mary Robert (the housekeeper) and
David Hawley (the burglar)!
Tickets are FREE on a first-come, firstserve basis.
