2014–15 Mainstage Productions
CLYBOURNE PARK
by Bruce Norris | directed by Ralf Remshardt
September 5–28, 2014; discount previews Sept 3 & 4
Winner of the Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize! The Hippodrome partners with
the University of Florida School of Theatre and Dance on this landmark coproduction. Clybourne Park is a wickedly funny, entertainingly provocative,
and fiercely intelligent play about race, real estate, and the volatile values
of each, and won nearly every honor the theatre has to offer, including the
Olivier Award, the Evening Standard Award, and the Pulitzer Prize. Broadway’s
hottest ticket will have all of Gainesville talking!
“FEROCIOUSLY SMART! A vital, superlative production of the sharp-witted,
sharp-toothed Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy.”—Ben Brantley, The New York
Times “Hilariously funny! A master class in comic writing and playing.” —The
New Yorker
SLASHER
by Allison Moore | directed by Lauren Caldwell
October 17–November 9, 2014; discount previews Oct 15 & 16
A Florida Premiere! This uproarious comedy will have you screaming with
laughter and surprise! Alfred Hitchcock started the slasher genre with the
classic film Psycho in 1960, and since then hundreds of horror films have
sent thrills down our spines each Halloween, including Friday the 13th, A
Nightmare of Elm Street, and Scream. The Hipp is well known for staging the
area’s best Halloween-themed productions, and this Halloween comedy
takes you behind-the-scenes of a Hollywood slasher movie.
“An insider’s view of the horror-movie genre...It’s a job well done!” —San
Francisco Examiner
VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE
by Christopher Durang | directed by Lauren Caldwell
January 9–February 1, 2015; discount previews January 7 & 8
Winner of the 2013 Tony Award! Regret and sibling rivalry fan the
flames of laughter in this wickedly wonderful Chekhovian mash-up
from Tony and Obie Award winning playwright Christopher Durang.
Melancholy turns into mayhem when Vanya and his sister Sonia—along
with their clairvoyant housekeeper Cassandra—are paid a surprise visit
by their Hollywood star sibling Masha and her twentysomething boy
toy Spike. Will Vanya and Sonia ever find happiness? Will Masha sell the
Bucks County farmhouse out from under them? And will Spike ever put
his pants on?
“Broad comic acting is raised to the level of high art…deliriously
funny.” —NY Times “You’ve only spent a weekend with these people,
but you might want to spend the rest of your life with Vanya and Sonia
and Masha and Spike.”—Huffington Post
MR. BURNS, A POST-ELECTRIC PLAY
by Anne Washburn | directed by Lauren Caldwell
February 20–March 15, 2015; discount previews February 18 & 19
WINTER WONDERETTES
created by Roger Bean
November 28–December 21, 2014
The holidays are meant for music and singing, and this year the Hipp has
brought back The Marvelous Wonderettes for a toe-tapping, heartwarming
holiday celebration! Featuring beloved holiday classics including “Santa
Claus Is Comin’ to Town,” “Jingle Bell Rock,” “Run, Rudolph, Run,” and “Winter
Wonderland,” this production will be, of course, marvelous! An energetic and
glittering holiday package is guaranteed to delight audiences of all ages.
“The perfect Christmas revue! Crackles with energy and joy!” —LA Weekly
A CHRISTMAS CAROL
Adapted by Jacqueline Goldfinger
November 29–December 20, 2014. **Performances Saturdays only at 2PM and
4PM**
Enjoy a new adaptation of this holiday classic! Infused with popular
Christmas carols and a subtle twist of contemporary humor, the famous
Ebenezer Scrooge is once again alive with holiday spirit. ** A Christmas Carol is
not included with season subscription**
8 shows a week: Tuesdays at 7pm | Wednesdays at 7pm | Thursdays
at 8pm | Fridays at 8pm | Saturdays at 5pm & 8:30pm | Sundays at
2pm & 7pm.
The theatrical event of the season! In this dark comedy set 100
years in the future, a new civilization uses current pop culture
references including TVs longest-running hit show THE SIMPSONS,
to frame its present. Mr. Burns, A Post-Electric Play explores what
will endure when the apocalypse arrives—when the grid fails,
society crumbles, and we’re faced with the task of rebuilding.
“The play is both scary and sweet, funny but dead serious,
unique and wonderfully theatrical.” —Time Magazine “Anne
Washburn’s hypnotic, sly and fiendishly insinuating Mr. Burns, A PostElectric Play...does the improbable: It makes the end of civilization
seem like the perfect time to create glowing objects of wonder and
beauty.” —Time Out New York
THE TWO MUSKETEERS
by Jon Jory
April 10–May 3, 2015; discount previews April 8 & 9
A World Premiere! When a small acting company eliminates one
Musketeer from their production of The Three Musketeers due to
budget constraints, the rest of the cast must sally forth bravely with
only two. The classic tale of d’Artagnan and his sword-fighting friends
is presented with hilarity, romance, wit, and derring-do to spare. This
high-comedy adaptation is a witty send-up of Alexandre Dumas’
beloved adventure.
Tickets at 352.375.4477 and online at thehipp.org
The Box Office is open Tuesday through Sunday from noon until 7:00pm
OR 30 minutes after the start time of the final event of the day (play, film or
