INTRODUCTION 1.1 Mission + Vision Statement Mission Gallim Dance, a New York-based contemporary dance company, creates and performs worldwide original work by artistic director and founder Andrea Miller. To Achieve Our Mission Andrea Miller and Gallim Dance produce work that embodies fearless physicality grounded by deep humanity and expressed through the madness and joy of the imagination. Each piece of choreography takes audiences on an artistic journey that generates a visceral response, interactive discoveries, and lasting resonance. Gallim is also committed to bringing distinguished arts education and community programming to the Clinton Hill neighborhood, and academic institutions across the nation. In January 2012, Gallim established its new permanent home in a historical landmark building in Brooklyn, NY, where it hosts year-round, low-cost education and performance programs. Gallim’s education branch serves both dancers and non-dancers through weekly classes, specialized movement workshops, artist residencies, open rehearsals, and monthly performing arts series. Supported by a gifted and dependable administrative team, the staff creates and pursues opportunities for rich exchange and exposure between Gallim, international audiences, and Gallim’s diverse community of dancers. 1.2 Executive Summary Gallim Dance had much to celebrate in 2013. Our seventh season proved to be another ambitious year for mission fulfillment, with increased activity in new work creation and production, touring, and education and community programming. The company performed 39 times in 18 venues, reaching 15,500 audience members. This year’s performance highlights included the world premiere of Miller’s most ambitious work to date, Fold Here, which Vogue praised for its blend of “wild-child dynamism with quiet emotional resonance”; a sold out season of Blush at BAM’s new Fisher Theater, international tours to Linz, Austria, Ludwigshafen, Germany, Panama City, Panama, and Paris, France; and performances in prestigious venues such as Guggenheim Works & Process, Montclair Peak Performances, and the Théâtre National de Chaillot in Paris. Gallim received commissions from Harvard University and New York University and Miller set choreography for a Vogue photo shoot and a feature-length documentary. Gallim was recognized for artistic excellence and outstanding entrepreneurship from Crain’s New York, The New York Times, and PBS NewsHour. Since Gallim launched its education and community programming in 2012, the company has served more than 3,000 individuals in its home studio at the Church of St. Luke and St. Matthew in Brooklyn, NY. Both the National Endowment for the Arts and New York City’s Department of Cultural Affairs have recognized these programs for their excellence, and have provided significant financial support. 8 As a result of the hard work and commitment of the Gallim artistic staff, the leadership of a dedicated administration and generous financial support from individuals, foundations, corporations and all three levels of government, we are able to report our success. These accomplishments would simply not be possible without the vision of the Board of Directors and Friends of Gallim who help sustain the growth of Gallim. Last but not least, the Gallim family also welcomed its latest addition with the arrival of Miller’s baby, Mateo! Please take a moment to review a synopsis of the year within the 2013 Annual Report. 2013 39 Performances 4 Commissions 4 International Tours 15,500 Audience Members 1,569 Participants Served at Gallim’s Home Studio 10% Revenue Growth & a Balanced Budget 99 10 10 1111 SECTION 2. ARTISTIC HIGHLIGHTS 2.1 Creation of New Work WORLD CLASS COMMISSIONS Fold Here Previews at Guggenheim Works & Process and Premieres at Peak Performances September 2013 In collaboration with video artist Tal Rosner and lighting designer Robert Wierzel, Fold Here unfolds in an implausible universe filled with empty cardboard boxes as the basic units of all existing matter. In pursuit of the boxes’ elusive essence, the performers explore the physical, sensorial and spiritual properties of human beings as parallel contents and containers of existence. The piece was initially inspired by Raymond Carver’s short story “Cathedral”, in which a sighted man’s hand is guided by a blind man’s heart in drawing a cathedral. Fold Here was commissioned by Peak Performances at Montclair State University (NJ) and co-commissioned by Dancers’ Workshop Jackson Hole and the Gallim Dance Commissioners Circle. Research for Fold Here was supported by the Jerwood Studio at Sadler’s Wells | London’s Dance House and Dancers’ Workshop. With the support of Sadler’s Wells, Gallim engaged in creative residencies with collaborators in its home studio. The company also spent three weeks developing the work in Jackson Hole where community members and local artists joined open rehearsals and took part in public classes. Miller Creates Newton’s Cradle at Harvard University March 2013 The OFA Dance Program “support[s] studies in dance composition, improvisation, performance, choreographic design and history of dance with an emphasis on collaboration and trans-disciplinary Inquiry.” As a Blodgett Distinguished Artist-in-Residence, Miller and Associate Director Francesca Romo spent three weeks on a commission at Harvard University creating Newton’s Cradle. Miller joined an impressive roster of fellow Blodgett recipients and distinguished artists including John Jaspers, Kyle Abrahams, Ariel Friedman, and Aszure Barton. NEW WORKS FOR COMMERCIAL PARTNERS The Life and Death Of Mick Rock June 2013 Gallim Dance partnered with Rockeye Productions to bring a dream-state dance scene to life in the filming of The Life and Death of Mick Rock. The documentary is an odyssey into the colorful and crazy recesses of rock ‘n’ roll’s history captured through the photography of Mick Rock. Studio HS Engages Gallim Dance in Second Commission January 2013 As part of Target’s C9 by Champion’s event at the Fountainebleau Miami Beach Hotel during the 2013 Miami Marathon, Gallim Dance performed to leverage brand awareness for C9’s new activewear line. Over two days the brand engaged with over 30,000 people. 12 13 13 2.2 Performance Highlights Across the Nation Blushing in Brooklyn Sold out season of Blush at BAM Fisher May 2013 Gallim debuted at BAM with six sold out performances. The critically acclaimed and nationally award-winning Blush returned to New York for the first time since its premiere at the Joyce Soho in 2009, during the inaugural season of the BAM Fisher Theater. Dense with emotional rawness and physical exertion, this intimate work chases one of the most elusive human expressions - the blush - through the stress and raptures as it melts to the edges of the skin. Commemorating Gallim’s home season in its new neighborhood, the company’s fans, friends, and supporters celebrated with an Opening Night Champagne Toast, Gala, afterBLUSH Cast Party, and Blush workshop. Romo and Windham Capture Colorado July 2013 Each year the Vail International Dance Festival showcases the most critically acclaimed dance companies and artists. Francesca Romo and Jonathan Windham joined the ranks with a performance of Pupil duet for over 1,200 audience members during the opening night ceremony at The Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater. Back-to-Back Seasons at The Rialto Center for the Performing Arts February 2013 Audiences welcomed Miller’s Blush with a sold out performance at The Rialto Center for the Performing Arts. Gallim was invited back to The Rialto after a successful performance of Dust in 2012. The Rialto attracts worldclass arts programming to its 850-seat venue annually and is considered a prominent hub for the arts in Georgia. 14 14 Gallim InternationalLY Wonderland Tours Europe Over 5,500 European Audience Members Experience Gallim April / November / December 2013 Gallim’s first international stop in 2013 was to Linz, Austria with an international debut of Mama Call and performance of Pupil Suite during Posthof Linz. Audiences were thrilled by the company’s fiercely driven movement aesthetic. Gallim ended the year by taking over Paris, France, and Ludwigshafen, Germany with its performances of Wonderland at Festspiele Ludwigshafen in Germany and at the Théâtre National de Chaillot in France. In its ninth season, Festspiele Ludwigshafen continues to bring world-renowned artists to the Theater im Pfalzbau. Gallim joined a festival roster with other seasoned artists like Shen Wei Dance Arts. Situated at Place du Trocadero, the Théâtre National de Chaillot is among the largest and most prestigious venues in Paris. Gallim took the mainstage at Chaillot for a five performance run of Wonderland, performing for over 5,000 audience members. Expanding to New Touring Markets Gallim Travels to Central America October 2013 Making its Central American debut, Gallim Dance’s Blush was Festival PRISMA’s featured performance. PRISMA was created for the promotion and development of contemporary dance in Panama and seeks to create a platform for artists and audiences to promote art between cultures. 15 15 “ 2.3 PRESS Quotes eye-catching, original movement - Chicago Tribune ” “Miller has high expectations for choreography, especially her own. It isn’t enough, she feels, for a dance to be beautiful. Dances should be revolutionary.” – Robert Johnson, Star Ledger, September 24, 2013 “[Miller] takes a moment to revisit one of her early pieces and whatever changes she’s made, her prowling, contorted physical language will no doubt be there, reminding us how tough and resilient the human body can be.” – The New York Times, May 16, 2013 “Her excellent dancers fly, crawl, hover, and hang together. They split jump, hurtle themselves into the arms of each other, and hold a pose, all with abandon, yet precision… Blush feels flush with craft, design, and invention.” – Deirdre Towers, DancEnthusiast, June 10, 2013 “Like all of Miller’s dances, Fold Here is physically dramatic, mining the deep emotional and theatrical resources of her riveting dancers.” – BWWDanceWorld, June 7, 2013 “On some level, Blush is unfathomable. On another it’s as dangerously, sensuously present as a touch on your own flesh.” – Deborah Jowitt, Arts Journal, May 26, 2013 “ A rising-star choreographer... shaping this generation of the art form - Crain’s New York 16 ” 2.4 2013 Calendar Highlights February 16 The Rialto, Atlanta GA - Mama Call and Pupil Suite March 22-23 Temecula Theater, Temecula CA - Mama Call and Pupil Suite March 28-30 Harvard University, Cambridge MA - Commission Performance, Newton’s Cradle April 3-4 Festival Tanztage at Posthof, Linz Austria - Mama Call and Pupil Suite April 19 Blair Academy, Blairstown NJ - Mama Call and Pupil Suite May 6 Press, Donor & VIP Studio Event, Brooklyn NY - Blush Lecture/Demo May 21-26 Brooklyn Academy of Music Fisher Building, Brooklyn NY - Blush June 3-5 Gallim Dance Advanced Summer Intensive, Brooklyn NY June 17-July 6 Dancers’ Workshop Jackson Hole, Jackson WY - Creative Residency, Fold Here July 11-12 Wesleyan University, Middletown CT - Mama Call and Pupil Suite July 22-26 Jerwood Studio at Sadler’s Wells - Fold Here Research & Development (Part 2) July 28 Vail International Dance Festival, Vail CO - Pupil Suite duet September 22-23 Guggenheim Works + Process, New York NY - Fold Here September 26-29 Montclair Peak Performances Series, Montclair NJ - Fold Here World Premiere October 12 University of Minnesota, Minneapolis MN - Blush October 21 Festival Prisma, Panama City Panama - Blush November 14-17 Cascia Hall Performing Arts Center, Tulsa OK - Blush November 29 Festspiele Ludwigshafen, Ludwigshafen Germany - Wonderland December 4-7 Théâtre National de Chaillot, Paris France - Wonderland 17 17 SECTION 3. Consistently ranked among the top performing arts schools in the country, The University of Michigan invited Gallim Dance for a two week residency in which company members re-staged excerpts of Pupil Suite and lead over ten movement and composition classes. Education Chair, Caroline Fermin, spearheaded a two-week long residency at Goucher College. During this time Fermin set excerpts of Mama Call and taught all levels of modern technique to the students. 28 SECTION 5. LOOKING FORWARD 5.1 2014 Strategic Plans Gallim will focus on 3 Artistic and Institutional Priorities in 2014: Strong and frequent presence in NYC We believe that Gallim Dance’s artistic success as well as the growth of major gifts and individual giving depends on establishing a regular presence for Gallim in New York. In October 2014, Gallim will perform a world premiere, site-specific commission at the Lincoln Center Atrium. The company is working to create an additional local performance or event in Spring 2014, possibly at New York City Center Studio 5. In 2015, the world premiere of a new work by Miller will be performed with live accompaniment in NYC. The staff pursues ongoing relationships with venues such as The Joyce Theater, Brooklyn Academy of Music, New York Live Arts, Fall for Dance, The Kitchen, Guggenheim Works & Process, St. Ann’s Warehouse , The New Museum, MoMA/P.S.1, The Chocolate Factory, Park Avenue Armory, Japan Society, and the Parrish Art Museum (Hamptons). Upcoming New York Performance Calendar • June 7: Outdoor performance at the Red Hook Brooklyn Festival • JUNE 11 (TENTATIVE): Gala/performance event AT NYCC STUDIO 5 • July 24 or 31: Festival performance at the New Victory Theater (Broadway) • September or October: World premiere installation performance at Lincoln Center’s Atrium • JANUARY 2015: APAP PERFORMANCES, VENUE TBA • 2015: New World Premiere Work to Live Early Baroque Music, TENTATIVELY TO BE PRESENTED BY THE JOYCE THEATER 29 Repeat presence in 1-2 satellite markets In addition to building a frequent presence in NYC, Gallim Dance aims to establish 1-2 satellite markets, where the company might return annually or biannually to create and perform new work. We believe this model will create richer opportunities for audience development, long-term presenter relationships, and fundraising. Dancers’ Workshop in Jackson Hole, Wyoming is one of our leading markets. Supported by the National Dance Project Touring Award, Gallim took Blush on the road to Jackson Hole in February 2012. Artistic Director, Babs Case, the staff at Dancers’ Workshop, and Gallim Dance created a brilliant artistic trifecta. The Dancers’ Workshop demonstrated their commitment to the company by co-commissioning Miller’s Fold Here. In the summer of 2013, Gallim spent three weeks in residency at Dancers’ Workshop developing Fold Here, and engaging the community in open rehearsals and master classes. Fold Here will have its West Coast premiere at Dancers’ Workshop Center for the Arts in February 2014. In 2013, Gallim expanded its touring territory with a California debut at the Old Town Temecula Theater in Temecula, California. Hodges and Miller took meetings with area presenters from Los Angeles to San Francisco. Our goal is to secure performance opportunities in San Francisco in order to reach new audiences, build upon our corporate relationship with First Republic Bank, and leverage the community connections of Frederic Seegal and James H. Herbert, Friends of Gallim. The company is in positive conversations with San Francisco presenter and contemporary dance company ODC about performance dates in 2015. 30 30 Larger and diversified base of contributed income Gallim Dance will continue seeking to increase Contributed Income, and will continue replacing one-time sources with renewable and multi-year support. Our most important focus in 2014 is adding two new members to the Friends of Gallim. 2012 was significantly supported by non-renewable sources of funding, including $75,000 from the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, $35,000 from the Joyce and New York City Center, and the tremendous capital contributions from the Friends of Gallim. In 2013 we sought to begin replacing those sources with renewable funds, and are committed to continuing our progress in 2014. Significant steps in achieving this goal were taken in 2013: • Awarded first Federal, State, and City funding; NYC’s Department of Cultural Affairs has committed $108,000 in capital & operating funds over the next three years • Created relationships with eight new corporate sponsors, including American Airlines, Bain & Co, and Target • 104% growth in number of donor households, broadening and diversifying our base of support The following goals will be strongly pursued in 2014: • Identify two new members of the Friends of Gallim • Grow the Commissioners Circle (gifts of $2000-5000) to 13-15 members (currently at 9 members) • Secure a new corporate or foundation donor to fully fund studio programming • Secure foundation and government support of new work (e.g. NDP Production Grant) and general operating expenses (e.g. Shubert) 31 5.2 New WorkS Lincoln Center Atrium Commission: Site-Specific World Premiere – OCTOBER 2014 Andrea Miller and the dancers of Gallim Dance will create a site-specific live dance and projection installation for Lincoln Center’s David Rubenstein Atrium, a vibrant public performance and community gathering space. For each of Miller’s choreographic works, she creates an original movement vocabulary in order to construct a specific and enveloping world. Miller views the creation of an immersive installation piece as the next artistic challenge for herself and the company. The Atrium is a long and narrow space, in which audience members will be encouraged to walk around the Atrium and view the dancers from many different perspectives. Real-time projections of the performance displayed on the Atrium’s media wall will offer yet another perspective on the dancers’ movement. To allow for the fullest exploration of the choreography, Miller intends to choreograph the 60-minute performance as three 20-minute suites, performed in direct succession by three different casts (one all women, one all men, and one coed). Miller’s concept for the set includes multiple walls or flats that challenge the audience’s ability to see the whole work. Miller is often inspired by the visual art world during her creation process; John Baldessari, an artist whose photographic images feature bright circles covering his subjects’ faces and joints, provided inspiration for the set. Throughout the evening of performance, audience members may consider how their experience of the piece differs from others’, and how a viewer understands “the whole work” when he or she can only see a part. New World Premiere – 2015 Andrea Miller will create an evening-length work for the seven company dancers of Gallim Dance, inspired by a selection of early baroque music. For the world premiere, and at touring venues where possible, the piece will be performed to live music. The new work will showcase Gallim’s core gifts of virtuosic physicality and musicality. Miller envisions a transformation of the visual stage environment accomplished by the use of color. In particular, she imagines lavender and pastel hues, creating a “Rothko effect” of light, fresh pastel colors that serve as the backdrop for the performance. 3232 5.3 2014-15 Performance Calendar Highlights 2014 January 11 APAP Showcase at Skirball Center, New York NY - Fold Here January 28 The Faberge Big Egg Hunt, Manhattan NY - Site-specific Jan 31-Feb 1 Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston MA - Wonderland February 7-8 Dancers Workshop Jackson Hole, Jackson WY - Fold Here February 10-21 Kingsbury Hall Presents, University of Utah, Salt Lake City UT - Blush March 12 JCC of Metropolitan Detroit, West Bloomfield MI - Pupil / Sit, Kneel, Stand March 14-15 Fort Wayne Dance Collective, Fort Wayne IN - Pupil / Sit, Kneel, Stand April 24-25 Hancher Auditorium, University of Iowa, Iowa City IA - Pupil / Sit, Kneel, Stand MAY 20 Hermes New York Fashion Week Event, New York NY - Site-specific June 7 Red Hook Summer Festival, Brooklyn NY - Pupil Suite June 11 Studio Showing & Event (NYCC), New York NY - New Baroque-Rothko work July 1-2 Festival GREC, Barcelona Spain - Wonderland, 12 dancers (HOLD) July New Victory Theater, Manhattan NY - Pupil Suite Fall 2014 Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center, New York NY - World Premiere Installation 2015 APAP Showcase(s), Manhattan NY - TBD January Feb 17-22 Gordon Center for Performing Arts, Owing Mills MD - TBD (HOLD) March Chutzpah Festival, Vancouver Canada - TBD (HOLD) April 3 Paul Mellon Arts Center at Choate, Wallingford CT - TBD (HOLD) April 16-19 Women in Dance Festival, Baton Rouge LA - TBD (HOLD) June ODC, San Francisco CA - TBD (HOLD) June 24-27 Theatre de la Ville de Luxembourg, Luxembourg City Luxembourg - Blush (HOLD) June 28-July 1 Stuttgart Festival, Stuttgart Germany - Blush (HOLD) 2015-16 Season The Joyce Theater, New York NY - World Premiere (HOLD) 33 33 SECTION 6.
