THE LIFE AND DEATH OF AN AGAVE AMERICANA AKA CENTURY PLANT
The Century Plant certainly suffers from an identity crisis. It does not live for a century or take that long to bloom. They
are native to Mexico but are now used as ornamental plants where climate conditions will allow them to grow. Typically, they do not bloom until they are around 15 years old. Then a giant stalk will shoot up from the middle and grow 15 to
40 feet. Before blooming the stalk will resemble a giant asparagus. The stalk will produce hundreds of white or yellow
clustered blossoms that will last approximately one month and then it will begin to wither and die along with the base
plant. The stalk can be cut to harvest a sweet sap called agave syrup that can be used as a sugar substitute. Another
misconception is that the plant produces Tequila. While it is in the same family as Tequila producing agaves, this one
does not.
Beginning of the end.

BOARD OF SUPERVISORS BUZZ: MEADVIEW LIBRARY ADDITION
For many years, Meadview area residents have supported fund raising activities to contribute to the building fund for the
much needed addition. What once was a dream has now become a realty as the room nears completion.
Work continues on the addition to the Meadview Library,
which is being funded primarily by the Friends of the
Meadview Library.
Now that the interior and exterior have been painted, the installation of the epoxy shield floor coating, HVAC, lighting
fixtures and ceiling fan will follow.
When complete the expansion will provide 350-square feet of
additional space for supplemental seating, library programs,
and meetings. The addition is slated to be ready for occupancy by July 1.

RECAP OF LAKE MOHAVE RANCHOS FIRE DISTRICT MEETING
John Flynn, LMRFD Administrator, gave a financial report stating that the cash position at the end of
May was $72,631.92. He continues to project a positive balance to close out the 14/15 Fiscal Year
and begin the 15/16 Fiscal Year. Fire Chief Pat Moore stated that Northern Arizona Consolidated
Fire District (NACFD) has approved their tentative budget and will now start considering the issue of
consolidation with LMRFD. NACFD has increased their tax rate from $2.88 to $3. which is 25 cents
less than LMRFD and they are concerned about the impact on LMRFD which would match NACFD’s
rate after consolidation. Moore stated that a newer ambulance is still a priority for LMRFD and the
new radio system is up and running well. He reported that Medical Insurance for LMRFD personnel
should be in place by July l. Another property in Meadview was annexed into the LMRFD.
Consolidation can be accomplished with the unanimous vote by the NACFD Board and a yes vote by Administrator
John Flynn. If forced to take it to a vote of district members in both districts, neither district could cover the cost. If the
consolidation is blocked the County would most likely require that LMRFD continue as it has for the last 2 years. Consolidation will be presented to both districts in public meetings with questions by the public answered.
When asked about using volunteers as EMT’s, Chief Moore answered that only Meadview has any volunteers. Under
new rules volunteers must pass a long list of physical tests, pass a background test and a drug test and be insurable.
The next meeting will be July 20 in Meadview at 1:30 pm and notice will be made about the public meeting to consider
consolidation.
Chief Moore, president of the Mohave County Fire Officer’s Association and a member of the Arizona Fire Districts Association and the Arizona Fire Safety Committee, recently explained the problems impacting all of Arizona’s fire districts
after the collapse of the housing market and new taxing laws enacted by the Arizona legislature:
The tax rate cap of $3.25 per $100,000 and the cap on tax levy growth limits growth to 8%. Income from property tax
has dropped by $2 million for NACFD, with the assessed value down over $9 million. It wouldn’t matter even if the assessed value went up, since the district now has a state mandated limit of 5% growth from the previous year. NACFD
had 46 employees and now is down to 26. If the fire districts are unable to change one or more of these tax laws, more
and more of the 156 fire districts in the state will have to consider consolation with neighboring fire districts. Then they
would be able to take advantage of employees who can be moved as needed, share rolling equipment, benefit from
reduced costs of liability insurance, health insurance, worker’s comp and save on purchase of disposable items such as
gloves, turnouts, boots and medical supplies.
FIREWORKS
The use of fireworks is always prohibited in the Lake Mead Recreation Area as well as all other Federal Parks.
Violators of the prohibition will be subject to citation and prosecution. Please go to http://www.nps.gov/lake/
learn/news/2015-fire-restrictions.htm for information on current fire restrictions in the park.

Approximately 60 residents and those from surrounding areas didn’t let the
heat keep them from learning what KRMC plans for our Meadview Medical
Services Clinic. Randy Beck, Senior Director of Physician Services for
KRMC, opened his talk assuring those in the audience that the Clinic will be
kept open one day a week until the hospital can find either a Physician Assistant or a Nurse Practitioner to be here two days a week. This was greeted
with applause. He did mention that KRMC plans to open another clinic in Dolan Springs and they hope to find someone who will live in Meadview and who
will be available to man both clinics with two days in Dolan and two days in
Meadview. Dr. Regina Cobb DDS will use the clinic one day a week. Randy
Beck will evaluate the space available and if the hospital sees a real need,
they may be able to bring up a Physical Therapist and/or a Chiropractor for
one day a week. The decision on this will be made in the future.
Randy’s Staff Coordinator, Stephanie, added that the KRMC van is able to
transport patients to Kingman for doctor visits and blood lab work. Please
contact KRMC for more information about this service. Beck listened to a
number of questions from the audience and was able to give answers that
provided those in the audience with a comfortable feeling that KRMC is very
interested in providing good health care to our area.
MONSOON 2015 IS HERE!!!
On Sunday afternoon June 28 around 4:00 pm we experienced the first monsoon storm of the 2015 season. Dark
clouds formed over the cliffs and to the south of the area and the storm moved in from there. Thunder, lightning and a
heavy rainfall hit our area. Some areas reported hail, also. Temperatures quickly dropped from around 104 degrees to
the mid 80’s. The weather reporting station located in the Meadview Boulevard median measured .64 of rainfall. It is
time for us to remember the common sense rules of monsoons. To name a few: Don’t drive into running washes, turn
off computers, TV’s, don’t go out in a haboob if one occurs and secure or remove lightweight patio furniture items.
