HIGHLIGHTS FROM 2014 –15 Meitler Consultants During 2014-2015, Meitler Consultants of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, completed a demographic survey for the elementary schools in the Diocese of Paterson. The purpose of the survey was to identify enrollment trends for elementary education in the Diocese. Information was identified about population by age, Catholics as a percent of population in various areas of the Diocese, parish data, and the locations from which each school is drawing its current enrollment. The data gathered will help schools in the process of strategic planning for the future. ACE Curriculum Update The Diocese of Paterson has continued to work this past school year, 2014-2015, using Notre Dame’s Alliance for Catholic Education partnership, to strengthen and enhance curriculum in the elementary and secondary schools. Having already completed new mathematics, reading and language arts curricula, principals and teachers have been involved in developing new curricula in science and religion, which will be completed by June 2016. National Blue Ribbon School Award The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program is an award given to high performing schools. Over the course of the program, over 7,000 schools in the country have received this award. Assumption School in Morristown received this prestigious award and is recognized as an exemplary high performing school because its student achievement in English and Mathematics is among the highest in the country (top 15%) as measured by state and national assessments. St. Mary’s Prep Marks 60 Years Step into the Future of St. Vincent Martyr School St. Mary’s Prep has been educating children in the Denville area for more than 60 years. Blessed with a heritage founded in a caring, faith-filled and familycentered environment, Dr. Margaret McCluskey, principal of St. Mary’s Prep, continues the long-standing commitment to Catholic education. The anniversary celebration was celebrated in March with a Liturgy concelebrated by Bishop Serratelli. St. Vincent Martyr School, under the direction of Sr. Noreen Holly, has been blessed with an enrollment that is bursting at the seams! The proposed expansion plan will enable St. Vincent Martyr School to more adequately house the school population while maintaining its present level of a super quality education. The proposed addition includes a 2-story, 6,200 square foot addition with 6 classrooms, 4 bathrooms, a staff break out room, an addition of 2 bathrooms to the existing basement as well as renovations to specific existing classrooms and modifications to the existing kitchen area and basement classrooms. STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics Hear what two principals, a student and parent say about the STEM program in our schools: n “Grounded in Catholic values, STEM education provides students of all grade levels with a global platform for authentic learning and experiences that will prepare them for future studies and careers of the next generation.” — principal “One of our students, who is now a junior at a Catholic Girls’ High School, is pursuing a career in engineering because of our STEM program. She was in 8th grade the first year of STEM implementation. Her whole attitude about Science changed, from little interest to loving it.” — principal n “The STEM program at St. Rose has definitely guided Tommy in what he n wants to do in the future. As of now, his plans are to major in Engineering and become some sort of a mechanical engineer. It’s a great program and St. Rose should continue it.” — parent n “The STEM program inspired me to be who I am today. I was always interested in science but the activities we performed then, are what really expanded my horizons. Whether we were dissecting a worm or creating a balloon powered car, the labs were interesting, fun and most importantly educational. They solidified my love of science and helped me realize I want to be an engineer in my future.” — student Sacred Heart 50 Years For the past 50 years the children of Sacred Heart School in Rockaway have been shining beacons of love, dedication and compassion exhibiting the spirit of their Catholic faith in their daily actions. Sister Marie DiLorenzo, principal of Sacred Heart School, was one of the original faculty members and has been principal since 1986. To mark this milestone, the school planned many anniversary events which will end with a Golden Jubilee Mass celebrated by Bishop Serratelli on Oct. 16, 2015. ACADEMICS Terra Nova Each year, students in the diocese take the Terra Nova standardized assessment.
