South Carolinians were the Pioneers in Home Care
Article by Pam Nelson, Synergy Home Care
ontrary to what many believe, home care is not a new concept. It
was long thought that home-based nursing care was started in
the United States in the Northeast in the 1880’s. Yet, in 1813 a group
of affluent women from Charleston, South Carolina known as the
Ladies Benevolent Society (LBS) were in fact the first to document
the dilemma of caring for the sick at home. The LBS was established
during a period when every community was concerned about how to
charitably care for the unwell.
C
was a new process in place to downsize recipients, the ladies had a
difficult time enforcing it. In 1857 the Superintendent reinforced the
need to discharge patients who were “not quite well”. The “not quite
well” status was chronic patients without much hope of recovery. This
concept is relevant in this day and age. It is currently being practiced by
Medicare, Medicaid, and Insurance Companies alike. The predicament
of the chronically ill still illuminates the complexities of care versus
economics.
Charity was essential because so many people could ill afford any
help and caring for the sick was a costly endeavor. The LBS not only
provided a caregiver but they supplied medications, food, heat, and
linens as well. In order to conduct their mission they had to rely on
the generosity of others. Needless to say, the solvency of the treasury
vacillated from year to year. In fact, just prior to the Civil War the
subscriptions had declined appreciably. Like today with the advent of
an unstable economy, donations to any charitable organization have
diminished.
In spite of many obstacles the ladies of Charleston devised a system
of home care that focused on the impoverished. They utilized
their domestic talents and strong principles of duty to generate a
methodology to meet the needs of some. Although their mission
was steeped in good works it became complicated by the capricious
variables of home care and all that it entails. In retrospect we have
much to thank the ladies for in their quest to provide home care. Some
of today’s models are based on their ingenuity.
The scarcity of resources and unpredictable demand for care raised the
indomitable question who should assume responsibility for home care.
This question still remains to this day and health care is currently being
debated by the Supreme Court.
A special thanks to Karen Wilkerson
for her extensive research on this
topic.
Another key factor that had to be considered was need. Surprisingly
as early as 1850 Medically Necessary Care was defined. The intent was
a formal process to identify those who were really sick. Even then a
technique was devised to reduce the recipients of care. Although there

Furman University Hall of Fame Honors
Presented to Ted (Yakimowicz) Yakin
Ted Yakin, a member or Senior Action and the SA Fitness Center, has
been given the honor of induction into the Furman University Athletics
Hall of Fame. Ted lettered in football from 1951-1954, and was the
captain of the team in 1954. He played both offense and defense
during the 1952-54 seasons. He was on the Southern Conference AA
check list, averaging over 5.8 yards rushing during his football career.
He was invited to try out for the NY Giants, Pittsburgh Steelers, and
Cleveland Browns.
Ted also lettered in baseball all 4 of his college years. He played 1st
base, and batted over .300 every year. He was selected for the all-state
team in 1954 with a batting average of .368. During his last game
against Clemson, he had 3 triples and 2 singles, with 5 RBI’s which lead
the team to Clemson’s defeat with a final score of 13 to 9.
Can you believe he was also a star athlete in track? In 1953, Ted’s
specialties were running the 100 yard dash (10 seconds flat), 220 yard
dash, and the broad jump.
After 2 years in military service, Ted
coached at Hillcrest High and Carolina
High schools. In 1963, Ted was awarded
coach of the year in baseball at Carolina
High School. In 1963 he was featured
along with other outstanding coaches
in an article for “The Coaching Clinic”,
a national publication, on the
fundamentals of baseball. Ted’s
contribution was on techniques for
pitchers. Ted’s other accomplishments
include serving on the Governor’s
Commission for the Palmetto State games and City Recreation
Department Hall of Fame. He coached the Greenville semi-pro football
team for 3 seasons, which had a record of 23 wins, 3 losses, and
won the state championship in 1966. He retired as partner of Sam
Wyche SportsWorld. Ted impresses and inspires all with his discipline,
dedication and the degree of fitness he has maintained.

QuickPlay is a unique group piano course for adults who want to learn to play piano, but
who don’t want to hassle with traditional lessons and a steep learning curve, or who don’t
think they have any musical talent. Think of QuickPlay as recreational music-making for
someone who’s never played the piano before. At your very first class, you’ll play two alltime favorites songs. In each following session, you’ll add two more pieces to your repertoire,
and participate in improvisations and other musical activities with classmates. There are
four 45-minute classes per session. If you take all three of the offered 4-week sessions of
this introductory piano course, you’ll even be able to read music. No piano – or practice! –
required at home. Just come to the class and have fun.
Class Sessions
Wednesdays, August 8-29, September 5-26, or October 3-24
9:15 am
Cost: $89 which includes registration, tuition, and music book.
($10 off for Senior Action members!)
Group Piano Class for Adults
For adults who’ve always wanted to learn how to play the piano or keyboard (or who want to
get back to playing!), this FUN class features Keyboard Encounters, an innovative course of
piano-style instruction where tradition and technology meet in harmony. At the end of the
six-week course, you’ll have worked through an entire music book, learning songs in all the
styles you’ve always dreamed of playing! But the learning doesn’t have to stop after your first
session of 6 classes - you’ll have the option to move on to additional courses to continue the
learning and the fun.
Class Sessions:
Fridays, August 3-September 7, September 14-October 19
OR
October 26-December 7 (no class 11/23)
10:00 am
Cost: $129 which includes registration, tuition, and music book.
($10 off for Senior Action members!)

Leny Emich – 60 years in America
Congratulations to Magdalena (Leny) Emich who recently celebrated 60 years of living in America. In 1944,
Leny was a refugee from Yugoslavia (now Serbia) during WWII where her family fled to Germany (the land is
now a part of Austria). Her sister Katharina (Kathi) worked for an American major in the U.S. Army, and it was
his family who encouraged the sisters to go to America.
At the age of 24, Leny, along with her mother, was the first to come over in April of
1952. She said they literally came “into the blue” and to Philadelphia - the “City of
Brotherly Love,” which she states it truly is because they were welcomed by all.
Her sister and her family joined them 2.5 years later.
Leny celebrates at Senior Action, April 2012.
Leny married her husband, Michael, in 1956 – a young man she met while in
Philadelphia – but who was also a refugee from Yugoslavia. Sponsored by the
church, she applied for citizenship in 1957.
Congratulations, Leny!!

Marty Shapiro is a Magic Man who has performed for groups of all ages
of the past 40 years. His magical career actually began at the age of 11,
when a relative made a cigarette disappear from his t-shirt. He
learned that trick and went on to learn many more where he began
performing at birthday parties at the age of 12. He has performed at
birthday parties, picnic, banquets, and festivals. At festivals he
becomes a “street performer” performing sleight-of-hand for anyone

We’d like to celebrate Edna’s years of service to the
community!
In September, Edna Guthrie will celebrate 8 years as
Senior Action dining site supervisor in Piedmont at the
First Baptist Church. In addition to her Senior Action
responsibilities, Edna also volunteers with Loaves and
Fishes. Over the past 7 years, Edna has volunteered 1,243
hours of her time picking up food at the local grocery
store and delivering to seniors in the community. In her
spare time, Edna likes to sew, travel to the mountains and
enjoy picnics. She loves to spend time with her 11 year old
grandson, Kaleb, her children Steve and Kathy, and son in
law, Jackie. We frequently see Edna at Orchard Park with
her adorable Shih Tzu dog, “China”.
Most Valued Partner
T
hree years ago, Senior Action established the Most Valued Partner (MVP)
program to formalize partnerships between area businesses and Senior
Action. The businesses that participate in MVP have all made a financial pledge
that supports the programs and services that are offered to you at Senior
Action. If you see this symbol MVP throughout the newsletter, it denotes
a MVP provider program. We are pleased to welcome a program high of 51
members this year. If you need the services these businesses offer, please
consider them first. If you attend one of their programs, please thank them for
their support of Senior Action.
