Chicago Ghost Tour—Chicago
Wed., Oct. 26, 2016 | 2:30 p.m.–11:45 p.m.
Course Code #: NST S87 001 | Fee: $99
Chicago is considered one of the most
haunted spots on earth, and many ghost
hunters feel it is because of Chicago’s
brief but extremely violent past, closeness
to water, and the ever-present influence
of those most spiritual people—the
Native Americans. Following the
Eastland and Iroquois Theater disasters,
people started noticing apparitions and
unusual sensations in alleys and along
the riverfront. Events at the historic Hull
House led to a series of horrific spiritual
manifestations. The building boom in the
late 1800’s along Chicago’s second Gold
Coast generated a number of post Ft
Dearborn Massacre sightings. Also, the
story of a scantily clad young girl standing
in the snow out near the cemeteries
southwest of the city have fed the saga
of Resurrection Mary. These and other
stories will be shared on this tour. Bring
a camera—you never know what or who
will make its presence known! Before the
tour begins, enjoy a delicious dinner in
Greektown (included). No refunds.
A Fireside Christmas—
Fireside Theatre, Fort Atkinson, WI
Sun., Nov. 20, 2016 | 8:15 a.m.–5:30 p.m.
Course Code #: NST S94 001 | Fee: $99
This season Fireside returns to the
tradition that has made The Fireside
Dinner Theatre the number one choice
for Christmas entertainment for hundreds
of thousands of people from around
the nation and around the world as they
present an all new edition of A Fireside
Christmas. It’s their mission each holiday
season to bring you a show that will
rekindle the true Christmas spirit in all of
us. Through songs, stories, and dances—
both traditional and original—they commit
themselves to capturing the very heart
and essence of the holiday season. Each
show is new and exciting, with gorgeous
new costumes and sets, new songs and
dancing, and new ways to tell the familiar
stories of the season. What never changes
is our faithfulness to the traditions and
memories of this most joyous of seasons.
A delicious brunch is included. No refunds.

up to the human body better than cow’s milk. Join us to discover
more about this versatile animal and get information about the

feeding, housing and fencing, supplies, equipment, pregnancy

Untold Stories of McHenry County
and the Civil War
Glynnis Walker
McHenry County, and those counties surrounding it, played
fascinating roles in the Civil War. The 95th Infantry and the 14th
Cavalry were from this area and we’ll delve into the lesser-known
stories about the people involved and how they served. The
Cavalry was headed up by Col. Horace Capron, who was joined in
battle by his three sons. Mr. Milton Fosdick of Woodstock fought
alongside Ulysses S. Grant until he was captured and imprisoned
at the horrific Andersonville Prison, often called a “hell on earth”
(for good reason). Fosdick was joined at this prison by Walter
and John Thompson, both from McHenry County. There was
also a brave and mysterious Cavalry soldier who worked as a spy
for the union army running messages behind the lines. It wasn’t
until this soldier applied for the army pension, after the war, it
was discovered he, was actually a she. If you don’t know what 4F
means, how young men were recruited to join 95th Infantry, or that
Lincoln’s personal bodyguard was a local man who became one
of the world’s first and most famous detectives, join us and learn
about the untold stories of McHenry County and the
Civil War.

Batter Up!
Kurt Begalka,
Civil War Era Baseball
McHenry County Historical Society
The first recorded baseball game was played on October 6, 1845
at Elysian Fields in Hoboken, N.J. with fourteen members of the
New York Knickerbockers Club. It was an unstructured, untested
game that didn’t begin to find its footing until around 1860.
Today, with franchises worth millions and local cable television
stations negotiating average deals of more than $60 million a
year, baseball has become big business. This hasn’t always been
the case. McHenry County Historical Society Administrator Kurt
Begalka will discuss the sport’s early origins and Civil War-era
baseball. He’ll also tell you about an opportunity to watch an
old-fashioned game in Prairie Grove on June 12 at 2 p.m. at the

Chicago’s Mayor Richard J. Daley
Jim Gibbons
“Hizzoner,” Mayor Richard J. Daley was a man of vision, courage,
and dreams for a great city. He was born in Bridgeport on
Chicago’s south side in a working-class Irish neighborhood, where
he lived his entire life. He was the legendary Mayor of Chicago
for twenty-one years and the Chairman of the Cook County
Democratic Central Committee for twenty-three years. He held
both positions until his death on December 20, 1976. Daley
played a major role in Democratic politics and also faced major
challenges, such as the 1960’s Civil Rights Movement, the 1968
rioting that protested the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King
Jr., the 1968 Democratic National Convention, and Vietnam War
protests. Under his administration, Chicago was called “The City
that Works!” For better or for worse, Mayor Richard J. Daley set
the measuring stick for future politicians. To this day, people still
remark, “You know this never would have happened when Richard
J. Daley was alive!” Join us for a factual look at this fascinating man!

What’s the Buzz? The Business of Bees
Larry Krengel
There are many reasons why raising honeybees has become so
popular. Honey is probably the most obvious answer. A single
bee can produce 1/12 teaspoon of honey in her lifetime (about 6
weeks), and with a colony consisting of thousands of bees, that
adds up quickly. Wax is another product of bees and is made
when bees convert their food into the wax comb. Pollination is
also a key component of bee life. If you want healthy plants, you
need bees. Bees are also diligent workers, hence the saying,
“busy as a bee.” The nice thing is that it doesn’t take a lot of work
to raise bees, just a bit of knowledge and patience. Larry Krengel,
a professional beekeeper and area expert will teach you all about
the business of bees.

Eerie Similarities between
John F. Kennedy and Abraham Lincoln
Jim Gibbons
John F. Kennedy and Abraham Lincoln both held the presidency,
one hundred years apart. Although they lived during different
moments in time, their lives ran directly parallel to each other.
This intriguing presentation details the similarities between
our 16th and 35th Presidents of the United States. A few of the
similarities include the number of children each had, the letters
in their last names, plus the places where they died. Many other
similarities repeatedly and eerily mapped these presidents’ paths,
which headed both men straight towards their tragic rendezvous
with destiny!

The Underground Railroad
Glynnis Walker
McHenry County has a fascinating history with the Underground
Railroad. The Woodstock area was a major stop on the
Underground Railroad and a main route for southern slaves
escaping to freedom in Canada. Many of the wealthy farmers in
the area were Abolitionists (you had to be wealthy because if you
were caught, the fine was $2,000, a huge sum at that time). These
brave men and women, which included some local government
officials, constructed their houses with lookout towers and secret
rooms to hide fleeing slaves. Ladies made quilts, which were
“hung out to air” and were embedded with secret symbols to
advise the slaves if it was safe to travel and which way to go as
they fled the slave hunters. Many of these houses still stand.
Come learn about the route of the Underground Railroad, the
Abolitionist movement and its local members, deciphering the
meaning of the quilt patterns, the slaves who made it to freedom,
and what happened to those who did not.

Planet Earth DVD:
The Blue Planet, Seas of Life: Tidal Seas & Coasts RETIRED ADULT PROGRAM (RAP)
Tidal Seas—The sun and moon move billions of tons of water
around the world with every turn of the tide. The strongest
tides empty entire bays, smash trees on riverbanks, and leave
sea creatures on suddenly dry land. Weaker tides control the
movements of huge numbers of fish, coaxing schools of giant
stingrays through astounding underwater arches. As the water
recedes, the tide can create unbelievable landscapes like a
sparkling world of salt crystal inhabited only by tiny shrimp and
bright pink flamingos. This episode deals with marine life that is
structured around the rising and falling tides, which are caused by
the gravitational pull of the orbiting moon.
Coasts—From rocky cliffs to gentle dunes, the coasts are always
changing. Day in and day out, they’re battered by crashing waves.
This episode examines the world’s coastal environments, “the
most dynamic of all ocean habitats.” Many shores provide sites
for breeding or laying eggs. Turtles are a major species that do
so. After hatching, the baby turtles race to the sea for survival.
Each year, four million seabirds, comprising fourteen species,
return to the island of Talan in eastern Russia to nest. But when
breeding season is over, life returns to the sea and the shore are
empty once again.
