Elkhart Community Schools welcomes the community to the Adult and Community Education’s
class offerings for the Fall Semester 2016. The Adult and Community Education office conducts
many programs that benefit the Elkhart Community. From Adult Basic Education to welding,
the opportunities for education and enrichment are sometimes as close as your nearest public
school! The courses offered are for adults wanting to learn a hobby, develop skills needed to
compete in today’s workforce as well as stay healthy and fit. Please take a moment to browse
the catalog and find the class that sparks your interest or fits your needs. For questions about

Elkhart Community Schools is dedicated to seeing all resident in our
community succeed. To that effort we offer free High School Equivalency (HSE)
preparedness classes (formally GED classes) at 6 locations throughout Elkhart
county. For those with computer and Internet access we also offer free
distance learning classes.
Mandatory Requirements:

HSE (GED) Study Class Orientation

Please call in advance to reserve your seat for orientation.
Adult Basic Education orientation sessions will follow the schedule as outlined below. Please register in advance.
Students must attend all four (4) days
Students must present state issued ID and social security card on the first day of orientation. Students without the
required identification will not be allowed to participate in that week’s orientation and will need to reschedule. NO
EXCEPTIONS.
Student under 18 MUST present the appropriate completed exit interview paperwork no later than the first day of
orientation. Students without the appropriate paperwork will not be allowed to participate in that week’s orientation
and will need to reschedule. NO EXCEPTIONS. Exit interview packets are available at the Community Education office.
Students should plan to arrive 15 minutes prior to the start of orientation. Students will not be allowed into orientation
after the start time.
Students are expected to come in appropriate dress. (Appropriate dress is outlined in the Orientation Handbook.)

HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVALENCY (HSE, formally GED)
The Indiana H.S.E. Test offers adults an opportunity to earn a high school
credential. Eligibility requirements include:
 Neither graduated from an accredited high school nor received high
school equivalency credentials;
 Indiana resident verification for thirty (30) days at your current address
 Picture ID (such as a valid Indiana driver’s license, valid State I.D., valid
Passport, or a School I.D. from the current school year)
 Proof of age — No one under the age of sixteen (16) may take the test.
Anyone that is 16 or 17 needs an Exit Interview form from their high
school and passing Readiness Exam test scores.

HEATING, VENTILATING, AIR CONDITIONING, REFRIGERATION
This is a 3 year program. Each year is divided into 2 semesters. Registration is required each semester. At the end
of each year, an Adult Continuing Education certificate will be presented to students who have satisfactorily
completed both semesters. These classes offer preparation for a career in HVACR through theory and hands on
experience.

HVACR YEAR I 1st SEMESTER
Learn the different types of HVACR systems and components as well as being
introduced to basic electricity, thermodynamics, the refrigeration cycle, system
maintenance, installation and repair methods, troubleshooting, and customer
service. Field trip to HVAC installation at home construction sites is included.
HVACR YEAR II 1st SEMESTER
HVACR 201 continues to build upon the basics of the trade. We begin with
simpler HVACR concepts and progress into complex theories and skills. The
class advances to deal with topics in electrical, heating and motors. Hands on
HVAC installation at home construction sites is included. Topics are presented
alongside practical industry-relevant examples, allowing both entry-level
technicians and 2nd year apprentices to easily learn and apply key HVACR
concepts.
HVACR YEAR III & IV 1st SEMESTER
With a building block approach that ensures readers comprehend simpler
concepts before moving on to more complex information, this is the perfect
resource for learning and applying advanced HVACR concepts. Students will
review the refrigeration cycle in comfort conditioning and progress to electrical
schematics, maintenance, geothermal heat pumps, and troubleshooting.
Hands on HVAC installation at home construction sites is included. This content
is in conjunction with ACCA, PHCC, and RSES. This course encourages you to
apply information as you learn it.

BASIC WELDING (CLASS I)
Students learn basic fundamentals of 1G, 2G, 1F and 2 F positions. You will be
introduced to stick arc welding, GTAW (TIG), GMAW-S and Spray (MIG), FCAU,
Oxy-Acetylene cutting/welding (OAW)/brazing and plasma arc cutting (PAC).
You will also learn the difference in structure and cosmetic welds. The
curriculum includes proper use of hand tools, power tools and other shop
equipment. Students will be taught different welding techniques and how to
weld Low Carbon Steel and Aluminum Alloys, read blueprints and interpret
weld symbols. Students must arrive to class on time and remain on task. Time
management skills are a must. Employability skills, Integrated Mathematics
and English are also part of the welding curriculum. Students are required to
provide safety glasses, protective clothing (long sleeve shirt, long pants, close
toe shoes or boots) and welding gloves.
ADVANCED WELDING (CLASS II)
Students will learn advanced fundamentals of 1G, 2F, 3G, 3F, 4G and 4F
positions. Metal groups include Low Carbon Steel and Aluminum Alloys.
Advanced welding in SMAW, PAC, OAC/W, FCAW, GMAW-S, Spray and GTAW
welding with interpreting blueprints may make students ready for entry level
welding positions. Students must arrive to class on time and remain on task.
Time management skills are a must. Employability skills, Integrated
Mathematics and English are also part of the welding curriculum. Students are
required to provide safety glasses, protective clothing (long sleeve shirt, long
pants, close toe shoes or boots) and welding gloves. Prerequisite: Basic
Welding.
AWS Certification - Work Indiana*
The American Welders Society (AWS) certification preparation class covers
skills, processes and practices for entry-level welders. Includes instruction in
arc welding, resistance welding, brazing and soldering, cutting, high-energy
beam welding and cutting, solid state welding, ferrous and non-ferrous
materials, oxidation-reduction reactions, welding metallurgy, welding
processes and heat treating, structural design, safety, and applicable codes and
standards. AWS certification is earned upon successful completion of the
course and the passing of the AWS exam.

Automotive G1 ASE Certification - WorkIN*
The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) has specifically
designed a certification for technicians performing maintenance and light
repair services. The G1 certification prepares individuals to apply technical
knowledge and skills to repair, service, and maintain all types of automobiles.
Instruction includes brake systems, electrical systems, engine performance,
engine repair, suspension and steering, automotive transmissions and drive
trains, and heating and air condition systems. Successful completion of the G1
exam and at least one year of hand-on work experience earns ASE certification
in this area.
HOSPITALITY START Certification - WorkIN*
START (Skills, Tasks, and Results Training) is a training and certification program
for entry levels positions within the hospitality industry – hotels, casinos,
convention centers, and restaurants. Course work covers the basics of 12
different front-line positions such as front desk representative, reservationist,
kitchen steward, and banquet set-up. Completion of the course and the
successful passing of the exam will result in achieving the START certification.

AUTOCAD 2014
This is a great opportunity to attain drawing experience for the mechanical,
architectural and electronic industries. Students are guided through hands-on
AutoCAD training in use of Basic CAD equipment; drawing geometric shapes;
working with drawing files; introduction to 3-D drawings; & dimensional
drawings. Upon conclusion, students will be prepared for 3-D modeling and
drawing.

AUTOCAD 2014 3-D MODELING
This is a great opportunity to learn 3-dimensional drawing creation and
concepts. Students will create and edit wire-frame, surface and solid models.
Topics include: solid model creation from regions, extruding and revolving;
changing user coordinate systems; solid model editing of faces, bodies and
edges using grips, align, rotate, mirror and array; viewing, shading and
displaying models. Prerequisite: AutoCAD 2014 or equivalent work experience.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN (EMT)*
During this course the student will develop knowledge and
skills needed for the first level of emergency medical provider
able to provide emergency care in the patient compartment
of an ambulance. Knowledge and skills will allow the student
to effectively provide emergency medical care for cardiac,
respiratory, diabetic, and allergic reaction emergencies’ as
well as other medical care. They will learn to control major
bleeding and stabilize injuries for emergency transport to
definitive care. Professional Employability skills will also be
developed throughout the course.
Classes will be held at the Career Center on Tuesday and
Thursday evenings from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Classes begin
August 23, 2016 through March 9, 2016 totaling 178 hours of
learning.
Once successfully completing the course students are eligible
to sit for the State of Indiana written and practical exams.

This class is a combination of Pilates and Yoga (PTYO). Yoga restores energy,

Pilates is to work your core muscles (abs, trunk and back). The class is suitable
for beginners to advanced participants. It is recommended that participants be
barefoot and use a Yoga style mat. You will need to supply your own mat.
