The DBG’s Kids in the Garden Programs connect children and their families to nature, through field trips, summer camps and birthday parties. Medicinal Plant Walk Discover some fifty plants that are widely used in herbal medicine around the world. Traditional uses will be shared, and modern scientific validation of these plant medicines discussed. Instructor Robert Rogers is co-author of a recently released book, “A Cree Healer and His Medicine Bundle”, a sharing of plant knowledge passed down for ten generations. Mosses of Alberta ID Course May 19 & 20, 9am-4pm Peatland Mosses of Alberta June 2 & 3, 9am-4pm Pruning 101 This informative and hands-on workshop covers basic techniques of pruning. Get answers from DBG Horticulturist Len Chambers, for your “when, how, where and why” pruning questions. Observe demonstrations of techniques, followed by a practical hands-on session in class and outdoors in the Garden (weather permitting). $60. Pruning Course Series Saturday, October 1 (3 session times) $25 per session or $65 for the whole day Sign up for one, two or all three pruning sessions on October 1, led by DBG Horticulturist Sherrie Benson. Each of the sessions provides specific pruning tips to help you focus on exactly what you would like to learn. Note: these are classroom sessions only; no physical pruning will take place in the garden. NEW! Pruning: Advanced Saturday, October 1, 9-11am This course is great if you have taken our Pruning 101 Course or have previous pruning experience. Topics covered include: repairing form on older trees, dead wood removal, canopy reduction, pruning for disease, basic hazard info, and when to call an arborist. NEW! Pruning: Multi-stem Shrubs, Hedging, Vines & Climbers Saturday, October 1, 11:30am-1:30pm Learn tips on how to rejuvenate old shrubs and flowering shrubs, and how to prune, hedge, and maintain vines and climbers. Pruning: Fruit Production Saturday, October 1, 2-4pm Learn tips and tricks on pruning to promote fruit production in young and old trees, the importance of resting years, pruning multi-stemmed fruit plants and how to prune for pest and disease control. This is a classroom session only. Landscape Construction Design courses are great but eventually you have to start building to realize your vision. This course will cover the installation of most aspects of any design (except concrete work). Soils, patios, retaining walls, sod, plantings, fences, and topics of waterfalls, lighting, and irrigation will be covered. This course is intended for homeowners but would be a great review for new landscapers. Instructor: Kevin Napora. $105. 3 Tues. – March 15, 22, 29; 6:30-9:30pm Feng Shui Gardening Feng Shui is presently used indoors but was initially designed for the outdoors to protect a house and bring good luck into the home. Using the traditional compass method we will look at how to recognize good and bad energies and then learn how to place garden features that will harness and guide positive energy into the home.
