In this guide you’ll find listings for
over 80 adult education courses.
Courses are offered year-round in the Garden’s unique
setting, led by experts in horticulture, landscape
design, visual arts, crafts, writing, photography, health
and wellness and more. For the serious hobby gardener
or those interested in a horticultural career, our Master
Gardener Certificate Program will help you be the
gardener you’ve always wanted to be.
The DBG’s Kids in the Garden Programs connect
children and their families to nature, through field
trips, summer camps and birthday parties.
Be sure to visit our 240 acres of display gardens, natural
area, ecological preserves and indoor showhouses.
The Garden is open May 1 through Thanksgiving,
and year-round for programs and courses.

Expand your fruit growing knowledge with help from
horticulturist Thean Pheh. Learn what fruits to grow
in our climate, planting procedures and first year care,
where to obtain planting materials, as well as how

cover the best varieties to plant of over 20 types of
fruits. $50.

Why is it that forests can thrive for thousands of
years without being watered, fertilized, or tilled?
Permaculture teaches us how to work with, rather
than against, nature. This class will get you thinking

Join expert Mike Schulz as we learn about
the mushrooms of spring! Includes a detailed

Grow Your Own Window Box;
Edible Flowers and Herb Garden
Learn to grow and sow your own edible flowers and
culinary herbs, suitable for the home garden. Take
home a 21” window box full of plants. With two
classes one month apart you will have guidance over
different stages of your window box. Instructor:

This is the perfect class if you have some orchid

expert Mike Schulz as we learn about summer’s
mushroom montage! Includes a presentation on
mushroom identification, easily identified edibles, and

Grow Your Own Bonsai
In this informative course, students get the chance
to practice and train their own bonsai during class.
Bonsai fundamentals will be taught, including basic
form, pinching techniques, and watering techniques.

Medicinal Plant Walk
Discover some fifty plants that are widely used in
herbal medicine around the world. Discuss how to use
the plants for health concerns, including preparation,
herbal-drug interactions and how to use safely as

Native Plant Walk
Learn the aboriginal uses of various trees, shrubs and
plants of Alberta for food and medicine. Traditional
uses will be shared, and modern scientific validation
of these plant medicines discussed. Instructor Robert
Rogers is co-author of a recently released book, “A
Cree Healer and His Medicine Bundle”, a sharing
of plant knowledge passed down for ten generations.
Plant medicines, preparation and interactions with
pharmaceuticals will be discussed. $50.

Pruning 101
This informative and hands-on workshop covers
basic techniques of pruning. Get answers from
DBG Horticulturist Len Chambers, for your “when,
how, where and why” pruning questions. Observe
demonstrations of techniques, followed by a practical
hands-on session in class and outdoors in the
Garden (weather permitting). $60.

Saturday, October 1 (3 session times)

Sign up for one, two or all three pruning sessions on
October 1, led by DBG Horticulturist Sherrie Benson.
Each of the sessions provides specific pruning tips
to help you focus on exactly what you would like to
learn. Note: these are classroom sessions only; no
physical pruning will take place in the garden.

Topics covered include: repairing form on older
trees, dead wood removal, canopy reduction,

Learn tips on how to rejuvenate old shrubs

Learn tips and tricks on pruning to promote fruit
production in young and old trees, the importance
of resting years, pruning multi-stemmed fruit
plants and how to prune for pest and disease
control. This is a classroom session only.
Landscape Construction
Design courses are great but eventually you have to
start building to realize your vision. This course will
cover the installation of most aspects of any design
(except concrete work). Soils, patios, retaining walls,
sod, plantings, fences, and topics of waterfalls, lighting,
and irrigation will be covered. This course is intended
for homeowners but would be a great review for new
landscapers. Instructor: Kevin Napora. $105.

Feng Shui Gardening
Feng Shui is presently used indoors but was initially
designed for the outdoors to protect a house and bring
good luck into the home. Using the traditional compass
method we will look at how to recognize good and bad
energies and then learn how to place garden features
that will harness and guide positive energy into the

DESIGN & CARE
Landscape Design for New Homes –
Starting From Scratch
You’ve moved into your new home and are now
faced with a bare lot. Learn from a pro how to
create the oasis of your dreams in this introductory
design intensive specifically geared toward new
home landscapes. A combination of lecture and
design exercises cover basic site planning, grading,
drainage and plant placement. You will leave
with a self-designed landscape plan. Instructor:

Batik is an ancient method of watercolour painting
on papers and fabrics using wax as a resist and a
preservative. Create several vignettes on various fancy

Becoming Poetry Workshop
Join Shawna Lemay for a 3-hour workshop blending
the elements of photography and poetry in the inspiring
Japanese Garden. Shawna Lemay is the author of the
novel, Rumi and the Red Handbag, which has made
Harper Bazaar’s “Must-Reads for Fall 2015” list, the
“Most Anticipated” list on the popular book website,
49th Shelf, and has been selected for Maria Shriver’s
fall reading club. She has also written six books of
poetry, essays, and a novel, Hive. See her photos on her
popular blog, Calm Things. In partnership with the
Edmonton Poetry Festival. $55.
