Counting Blessings
Thank you for your tremendous generosity in 2005.
Your contributions to The Seton Fund and your commitment to helping those in need
have allowed us to meet many of our fundraising goals, including completion of the Topfer
Challenge one year earlier than originally planned.
Since 2000, you have responded to The Topfer Family Foundation’s $5 million challenge
grant with more than $5 million in gifts. The combined $10 million establishes an endowment to help provide long-term support to the Seton Community Health Centers: Seton
McCarthy in East Austin, Seton Kozmetsky in South Austin, and Seton Topfer in North
Austin. These centers serve a total of 15,000 working poor Central Texans with basic medical care, immunizations, prescriptions, and social services.
You met the Topfer Challenge a year early in the face of many competing needs. Many of
you are supporting our sister project, the new Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central
Texas, now at its halfway point in construction. You also responded quickly and generously
to the needs of the Gulf Coast communities and the thousands of people who came to
Austin last fall seeking relief and a new beginning.
Through your support, you helped bring the plight of the poor, the sick, and the uninsured
to the forefront of our community’s attention. Many times you have answered a cry for help
and continued to respond to what often seems to be an ever-increasing need for medical,
social, and mental health care services in an underserved population. Generous giving is a
powerful example for those around us – family, friends, and neighbors.
When weather-related tragedies struck America’s Gulf Coast region, Seton first felt the
impact of this unprecedented need at Brackenridge Hospital, Seton Medical Center,
Children's Hospital of Austin, Seton Northwest, Seton Southwest, and Seton Edgar B. Davis
Hospital. The need for care continues, and some of these displaced men, women and children are accessing services provided by our Seton Community Health Centers.
Seton’s response – and yours – show that Seton truly is a network of not just great facilities,
but a family of exceptional people – employees, volunteers, physicians, and donors – working together to address our most serious healthcare needs. St. Vincent de Paul, co-founder
of the Daughters of Charity, said “the more you give, the more blessings you will receive.”
May you and your loved ones enjoy many blessings in 2006.

Over the Top!
Topfer Family Foundation $5 million Challenge Grant =
$10 million Endowment for Seton Community Health Centers
The Topfer Family Foundation challenged the Central Texas Community to raise $5 million in cash
gifts in six years to establish an endowment for the Seton Community Health Centers, which provide
medical care and social services for the region’s most vulnerable. In return, the foundation promised
to match each dollar raised to create a total endowment of $10 million.
Not only did Central Texans respond with generous gifts large and small, but the challenge was met
a year early with a total of $10 million raised!
The three Seton Community Health Centers—Seton Topfer in North Austin, Seton McCarthy in East
Austin, and Seton Kozmetsky in South Austin—serve more than 15,000 people each year, nearly
half of whom are children. The endowment will augment services that the clinics provide, as well as
fund new programs and building expansions.
The Topfers are longtime supporters of the health centers. They funded construction of Seton Topfer
in 2000, and during the process became keenly aware of the need for a healthy endowment that
would help secure a stable source of funding for all three centers.
“We had a concern that in a difficult economy, the clinics might have to curtail services. To minimize
the effects, we started the endowment to help defray operating expenses,” says Mort Topfer. The
family also wanted to create an opportunity for gifts from individuals and organizations who had not
given to Seton before.
“We wanted to get the rest of the community involved.
We brought in a lot of new donors through the campaign who can take ‘part ownership’ in the effort.”
mort topfer
One of Mort’s most memorable experiences in his relationship with Seton was visiting Seton Topfer
after it had been operating for a year. “They gave us notes from patients about how it offered care
they hadn’t been eligible to receive before. That was meaningful to us.”
Seton is grateful to the Topfer family and all those who so generously contributed to the challenge.

29th Annual Seton Development Board Gala
Marvin Hamlisch Tickles the Ivories at Seton Development Boards's Gala Tribute to Sr. Gertrude Levy
Entertainment and reminiscences by Marvin Hamlisch in
the beautiful Four Seasons Hotel Ballroom provided the perfect
backdrop for a tribute to the work of Sr. Gertrude Levy, D.C.
The Seton Development Board raised more than $355,000
toward their $2 million pledge to support the expansion and
renovation of the Surgery Department at Seton Medical Center.
The gala honored Sr. Gertrude for her more than 30 years at
Seton Medical Center, beginning her work in 1976 in the Public
Relations Department. She later founded the Seton Northwest
Hospital Volunteers Department and served as its first director.
She is now a coordinator of Patient and Guest Services and continues to visit patients, keeping them and their family members
informed and comfortable.
The Seton Fund extends its appreciation to Board President
Reenie Collins, and Gala Co-chairs and the dynamic motherdaughter team of Hessie Owen and Hessie Brawley for their time
and talents in making this gala such a success.

Like Father, Like Son … and Son and Daughter
Seton Fund Trustee Dr. Robert Askew found fulfillment in watching his
three children enter the medical profession and looked forward to the
day when he could work with them directly. That day came recently at
Seton Medical Center. “I am emotional about this—it’s a day I lived for,
for a long time,” he said. "Everybody knew that I was going to keep
coming in until I could assist them at the table. Now it feels complete.”

The Seton Fund Welcomes
New Trustees
The Seton Forum
The Seton Fund welcomes four new members to its Board of Trustees:
Sr. Helen Brewer, D.C., Erik Pronske, M.D., John Sharp, and Tom
Segesta.
From the Battlefield to the Football Field,
Frank Denius Shares His Memories
Sr. Helen Brewer, D.C. joined the Seton Healthcare Network in 1998
and is an advocacy consultant with the Government Affairs Department. Sr. Helen’s area of expertise is children’s health insurance and
the simplification of the Medicaid application for children.
It would be hard to argue with anyone who calls Frank Denius one
of the greatest fans of UT football. Recently, he shared tales of
more than 50 years of Longhorn memories with members of the
Seton Forum. Mr. Denius, a decorated World War II veteran who
landed at Normandy, also answered questions from members
about that turning point in the war.
Mr. Denius, an atttorney, philanthropist and president of The
Cain Foundation, is one of several speakers who shared his time
and experiences with the organization of young Austin professionals and community leaders who support Seton through philanthropy and voluntarism.
Other recent lunch speakers included Dr. Patricia Hayes, executive vice president and chief operating officer, Seton Healthcare
Network; former Austin Mayor Kirk Watson; and Juan Sanchez,
University of Texas vice president for research, speaking on the
future of Austin; and Diana Resnik, vice president for community
care, Seton Healthcare Network speaking about HAAM, Healthcare
Alliance for Austin Musicians.
In addition, Seton Fund Trustees Joe Long, Lowell Lebermann,
Tim Taylor, and Trey Salinas hosted special breakfast sessions for
Erik Pronske, M.D., is chief of the Seton Network Medical Staff. He
did his anesthesiology residence at Hermann Hospital in Houston and
completed a fellowship in pediatric anesthesiology through Harvard
University. Dr. Pronske is with Capitol Anesthesiology Association.
A former Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts, John Sharp was recently appointed by Governor Rick Perry to chair the Texas Tax Reform Commission. He is a principal at Ryan & Company, a Dallasbased tax consulting firm.
Tom Segesta is an active member of the Austin community and is manager of the Four Seasons Hotel. The Four Seasons Hotel has supported
the Shivers Cancer Programs at Seton through a variety of events and
activities throughout the years.
