and your passion for continued education and being a lifelong learner is already beginning to set
the stage for your students’ academic futures.
You are an integral part of your students’ lives, and now is the time for them to start planning
for college. We are providing this handbook to help you engage your students to carry home the
message; “Let’s Go To College: Nevada Saves”
We want all families to know about the resources Nevada has to help families plan and save for
college, including Nevada College Kick Start, Nevada Prepaid Tuition and the SSGA Upromise 529 Plan.
Your teacher handbook includes:

“It’s never too early to start talking about college!” And we know just talking about college won’t make it
happen. Sage the Nevada College Saving Desert Tortoise, is making goals and saving for college. Sage
and his friends are learning that meeting goals takes planning, and it isn’t always easy. Fortunately, Sage is
developing strong character traits and will stick to his plan to reach his goals.
Implementation
Share a little of your college experience and use video
of college campuses and marching bands to quickly
build background. If time permits have your students
listen to the marching band and march around the
room. Engage students in the fun aspects of college
and the hard academic work required to succeed.
Read the “Sage Saves” e-book to your students
NV529.ORG
Discuss new vocabulary words: college, savings, goal,
and plan. (graduation, job, and career)
Have students pair-share prior to discussing each
question, then have a whole group discussion.
Who is the main character in the story? What is
Sage’s goal? Why is Sage saving money? What else is
important in the story? What is a hero? Who is Sage’s
hero?

Sage the Nevada College Saving Desert Tortoise is making goals and saving for college. Sage has a specific goal and
a plan to achieve his goal. This Sage lesson will focus on how choosing an achievable goal and making a step by step
plan sets students up success! Enjoy a new call and response that focuses on the college goal.
Implementation

to the meeting place for lesson. Use class whiteboard to write Sage’s goal (go to college). Have
students tell you Sage’s plans to achieve his goal
(work hard, good grades, talk to his parents and
teacher about goals, save money for college).
Read “Sage Saves” e-book NV529.ORG
Discuss the difference between short and long with
regards to time. Engage students in a conversation
about things they may have to wait a short time for, like
morning or lunch recess. Have students’ pair-share
to think of something that will take a longer amount
of time. Discuss something that is a long time away,
like spring break or summer vacation. Have students
discuss something that they may have to wait a long
time to do (swimming, baseball, football, sledding
or vacation).

long will it take him to reach his goal to go to college? Invite student to play a new game “Sage Thumbs Up” “Is
It Possible or Not!” Ask students to respond to yes answers with a thumbs up or a sideways thumb for no; ask
students simple questions for yes and no answers: Sage says…Children can fly, Sage says…children can walk…
Sage says, children can make goals!
Remind students that Sage is not waiting; he is acting now by making saving for college a priority. He is the
one setting his goal; he is talking to his parents, teacher and friends. Discuss making a class goal for the day! A
new call and response, teacher holds hands like a megaphone –“Sage Saves” –Students respond with a Sage

This Sage lesson will focus on achieving goals that require a plan and take a long time to complete.
The conversation of perseverance and personal desire to accomplish the goal of going to college is
discussed. Sage is sticking to his plan to go to college by saving coins and dollars. He is determined to
meet his goal by making sure financial gifts, money earned by doing chores and other jobs is put in his
college savings account. As a college graduate you are aware of many ways to pay for college. Share
your first hand knowledge with your students. Share that to make your dream of becoming a college
graduate come true, you had to stick to your plan and work hard. Explain that there will be sacrifice,
and as Sage says “going to college isn’t free!” But the rewards of savings for college and achieving
your goal will make you proud and that can last a lifetime.

Sage is excited to measure the progress he is making toward his goal. Sage has been doing chores
and extra jobs to earn money. He has been putting his money in his college savings account. His
money is growing, and he is making progress, but progress can be slow. It’s important that students
recognize that Sage is making progress in saving money for college and in many other ways too. Sage
is developing character traits that will help him make good choices. Sage knows that one of his goals
is to do well in school. Sage is surrounding himself with family, friends and teachers who support his
goal to go to college. Sage is taking responsibility to make his dream to go to college come true.

We open this Sage lesson by communicating the importance of not only positive thinking but also
positive actions that set the stage for success. The “I Can” objective is a vital component of the Sage
Saves “Let’s Go To College!” theme. Sage is determined to go to college, but he’s not doing this
alone. His family, teacher and friends are all on the “Let’s Go To College!” team.
Implementation
Use Attention Call and response --Teacher: “Sage Saves”
Students: “Let’s Go To College!”
Play a college fight song, and have students
march to the meeting area for lesson.
Review Sage Saves story, goal and plan.
Discuss with students Sage’s original goal
to go to college, and make a list of Sage’s
goals and plan on the white board. Ask
student to pair-share some important things
they have learned about college and savings
for college.
Objective
• I can learn to achieve goals by listening to
e-book, “Sage Saves”, read by teacher.
• I can learn that I can go to college
by making a thoughtful plan that includes
making savings goals and goals to do my
best in and out of school.
• I can learn to save my money in a piggy
bank or a college savings account by
doing my best in school and participating
in class discussions.
Ask students to think of something new that
they have learned to do (ride a bike, roller-skate, tie shoes or go on the monkey bars)? Discuss the
importance of not giving up and talk about perseverance. Ask students if it was hard to remember to
keep trying to learn these things? Share your goal of saving and going to college with parents, family
and friends. Another way to be reminded is to write down the goal and the plan, but most important
is to put something up, like a pennant!
Continue to use the attention call and response Teacher says “Sage Saves” and Student response
“Let’s Go To College!” End lesson with marching band music as students move to the next activity.
Class Activity
Have students make “Let’s Go To College!”
pennants with classroom scrap materials
and display in classroom.
Materials see Lesson 1
Assessment
Vocabulary and understanding verbally
in small group setting to assess knowledge.
“Let’s Celebrate!” Homework: Send a worksheet home with each student to be completed and
returned to school with parent/guardian signature. Reward student with Sage sticker and retain
worksheet in student’s Sage Saves folder for parent conference.
