The accident occurred at approximately 2:45 p.m. on Farm Road 51, just north of South Murvil Street, as school traffic started to build. A southbound van, driven by Angel Carillo, 69, of Decatur, was traveling too fast when he came upon stopped traffic, said Decatur Police Chief Rex Hoskins. He veered into the northbound lane and struck a passenger car driven by Ima Reaves, 72, of Azle. Reaves swerved all the way onto the shoulder to try toavoid the collision, Hoskins added, but her car was still struck hard on the driver’s side. Rescue workers had to employ the “jaws of life” to free her from the vehicle. Reaves, her 82-year-old passenger Moreline Riley of Boyd, and Carillo were all taken to Wise Regional Health System in Decatur for minor injuries. A third car driven by Christine Onofre, 23, of Decatur also was involved, but she was uninjured. Traffic was rerouted as the section of FM 51 was completely closed for about an hour. ALVORD WISE COUNTY Embezzlement Case Woman accused of stealing more than $100,000 By BRANDON EVANS Wise County Sheriff ’s deputies arrested a Paradise woman last week for allegedly stealing more than $100,000 from her former employer. Angela M. Smith, 33, was arrested last Thursday for credit card or debit card abuse. The charge was subsequently elevated to theft between $100,000 and $200,000, a second-degree felony. According to an arrest affidavit, Smith was the office manager for sevSMITH eral years at Cobb Rental and Equipment. The company, located just south of Decatur on Farm Road 51, rents tractors and other types of heavy duty equipment. WEATHER www.wcmessenger.com/weather 2A WISE COUNTY MESSENGER, Decatur, Texas, Wednesday, November 16, 2011 RHOME Rhome curbs commercial parking By BRANDON EVANS Rhome City Council unanimously passed a pair of amended ordinances last Thursday aimed at curbing the parking of tractor-trailers and other large vehicles in front of houses in residential zones. The new traffic amendment prevents the parking of a “commercial vehicle, boat trailer, or recreational vehicle, including travel trailers, campers or motor homes,” on any street or public right-of-way adjacent to a home. At a meeting held last month, several residents complained about the proposed amendment. “I moved here six years ago and made this my house and home,” said Zach Hunter, who lives on Stirling Road. “Now I’ve been told that my tractor-trailer doesn’t look good parked out there.” “I also live on Stirling Road,” said Brad Benson. “I have a boat, and I keep it in the driveway. I don’t have any other place to park it. I don’t know what the problem is. “I moved here five years ago. What attracted me here is that there was no homeowner’s association. “Now this is threatening (Hunter’s) way to make a living.” However, the amended ordinance does allow said vehicles to be parked in front of a property for up to 96 hours at a time, for the purpose of loading or unloading. The new ordinance also prohibits the parking of listed vehicles in front or on the side of a property unless it is on an “all-weather surface, including gravel, asphalt or concrete surface or on a paved parking space.” The amended ordinance also affects parking tractor-trailers and similar vehicles in non-residential zones. Such vehicles can be parked only on “concrete, asphalt or other approved, hard, all-weather surface.” Any person found violating the ordinance can be charged with a misdemeanor and fined. A second amendment prohibits parking within the public right-ofway on the west side of Old Mill Road between Russell and Logan streets, from 320 Old Mill Road to 190 East Russell Street. Nor can vehicles be parked within the public right-of-way of any U.S. highway or state highway, including frontage roads. A third proposed ordinance amendment regarding the removal of junked vehicles was put on hold by the council per city attorney Walt Leonard. Leonard said he was waiting on the results of a Supreme Court case concerning a municipality’s ability to remove someone else’s property. The metal cylinder weighed 131,000 pounds. It came to a rest in the ditch near the railroad tracks. The Business 287 exit headed north into Rhome was closed from mid-morning until early evening as firefighters waited for a crane to come in and reload the equipment onto a new trailer. The driver, Hans Hitzeman, 52, of Winnsboro, was uninjured but shaken up by the incident. The force of his trailer twisting behind him caused the windows to pop out of his cab and ripped several tires off the trailer. “I gave it everything I had to keep it upright,” he said. Inmates help with the upkeep of animals. They walk and feed the dogs and clean the kennels. But as soon as they arrived with the deputy late in the morning, one noticed a window broken at the shelter. “(The suspect) broke out a small window and reached in and opened the door,” said Ashleigh Portales, crime scene investigator with the Sheriff ’s Office. “They went inside and took one little dog from its cage.” Submitted photo SHELTER BREAK — An unknown suspect broke into the Wise County Animal Shelter over the weekend. They passed over every animal inside except a small black and tan Chihuahua mix. The dog nabbed was a black and tan female Chihuahua mix. No other animals or items were taken. A citizen had found the dog and brought it to the shelter as a stray on Nov. 8. The shelter charges a $20 impoundment fee for dogs and an additional $6 per day. But the shelter will work with people who are trying to get their dogs back, said animal shelter clerk Linda Bryan. “We want to reunite people with their dogs,” she added. As a result of the break-in, the county plans to beef up its security. Wise County Sheriff David Walker asked commissioners court Monday for permission to expand the alarm system. The current alarm system just covers the office area of the shelter, not the animal housing unit. He said it shouldn’t cost the county any more to monitor, but it will require the purchase of some equipment. The shelter is located on Private Road 4195, just off Farm Road 51 between the dump site and impound yard, in Decatur. It’s open Tuesday through Saturday. Pet adoption is $25. The shelter has a Facebook page that shows dogs currently available. For more information contact the shelter at (940) 627-7577. Q Email Brandon at [email protected]. Counties with a population greater than 100,000 or counties that neighbor these metropolitan areas can be members. “The body is incredibly politically powerful,” Burns said. “When senators and representatives come to the meetings, they don’t say ‘this is what we’re going to do.’ They ask, ‘what do you guys think about this?’ And that’s nice.” He explained that the group is like a sounding board for legislators, and it determines whether proposed legislation will positively or adversely affect counties, informing legislators accordingly. Fellow commissioners approved Burns’ nomination at their regular meeting Monday. In other business, Sheriff David Walker requested expanding the current alarm system at the county animal shelter. A weekend break-in prompted the request. One dog was stolen. (See story above.) “I never thought we’d need an alarm on the dog pound, but we do have things in the shelter that don’t need to be stolen,” he said. Walker told commissioners he didn’t think the expansion would increase the monthly monitoring cost, but some additional equipment will need to be purchased. Commissioners approved his request. The group also decided to approve an order to tax goods-in-transit that would otherwise be exempt according to Senate Bill 1. Commissioners also: Q tabled a second time the final plat of the Wells Addition in Precinct 2; Q approved Burns adding a chip spreader, Case backhoe, Case backhoe parts, a flat bed and two backhoe buckets to the auction list for Ritchey Brothers; Q extended the current hauling bid by 90 days with R.J. A presentation on the two-hour Parent-Student Scavenger Hunt for sixth graders was the highlight of Monday night’s monthly school board meeting. “It was something our sixth-grade team (of teachers) created theirselves. I’d never seen it done anywhere else,” Travis Whisenant, Bridgeport Middle School principal, said of the Oct. 20 event. “Part of our campus program this year is to be very proactive in getting parents to campus, and this worked great.” Nearly 50 percent of the students’ parents attended. “We had an exceptional turnout. That was the first time we’ve done it, and we got great feedback from parents.” BMS employees have been charged this year with turning around a downward trend in student achievement on state assessment tests that resulted in the school being rated “academically unacceptable” by the Texas Education Agency last summer. So they jettisoned the standard approach to parent-teacher night in which parents visit their children’s classrooms and listen to a presentation from each of their children’s teachers. “We wanted something that would be engaging for our parents,” the school’s new principal said. “They went through what was kind of a representation of what a normal school day is. We tried to keep the group smaller, so we could have more interaction. “Ultimately, we want our parents to be partners with us in their kids’ learning. Having something like this gives a much better idea what their child’s day looks like. When you have that understanding, it makes it a lot easier to be working on the same page with the parent,” Whisenant said. Not only were the BMS staffers and those who attended sold on the program, but so were the board members who listened to Monday night’s report. “The board members loved it,” said Superintendent Eddie Bland. “The turnout was great, nearly 50 percent. I wish we could get turnout like that for elections.” Whisenant said BMS in- tends to use the Scavenger Hunt as a springboard to more creative activities. “This was something we tried, and it went really well,” he said. “We were very happy with it, not just the turnout, but the level of involvement we had with the families. It’s definitely going to change our involvement with parents, and it’s kind of changed the way we’re planning to do our parent involvement activities.” Already, the BMS administrators are seeing positive changes in their results with students, too. “We’ve had two curriculum-based assessments of the students, and they’re getting better each time,” Whisenant said. “In terms of their overall level of understanding of what is a much more rigorous assessment we’re trying to align with STAAR (the new state- mandated assessments), our kids are understanding and progressing. We’re very happy with that.” Also Monday, board members: ■ received the district’s annual audit report, one Bland termed “real good” in appraising the district’s handling of public monies. ■ OK’d an amended contract with Enviromatics that will add $46,000 to the cost for new heating and air-conditioning equipment at the middle and intermediate school campuses. ■ cast all of its 582 votes for the re-election of Ray Cook Jr. to the Wise County Appraisal District. ■ set its next meeting for Dec. 12, moving it up to avoid the district’s holiday vacation which begins Dec. 19. ■ Email Dave at drogers@ wcmessenger.com. YOUR VIEWS Minimum wage responsibility in tipping situations By WILLIS WEBB Having never worked in a job that relied on tipping to make decent pay or to reach the minimum wage requirement, it’s hard to identify with someone complaining about a shortfall in that situation. A recent story outlined some problems for airport workers responsible for assisting disabled travelers. Apparently, Houston’s Bush Intercontinental Airport hires people to perform that service for an hourly wage that necessitates tips in order for the worker to reach minimum wage. Actually, the whole scenario of employers being able to dodge that responsibility of paying minimum wage by requiring employees to seek tips to make up the difference galls me. All of these orders were placed individually and verbally by the waitresses. One waitress came meekly into the kitchen and said softly, “I need a cheese omelet with bell peppers.” Well, that would take up a large portion of the grill. My reaction was to walk through the door that separated the kitchen and the dining area, my usual right arm extension in place, and ask loudly, “Who ordered the cheese omelet with bell peppers?!” One of the music majors, dark glasses in place after sundown, meekly raised his hand and said, “I did, but take your time.” The cafe owner followed me back into the kitchen and calmly said, “You think maybe you overreacted?” “Yessir. Sorry.” And, I learned about keeping your cool. But, the music guys ordered burgers after that day. Q Willis Webb is a retired community newspaper editor-publisher. DECATUR Council casts votes for WCAD board By PHIL MAJOR The Decatur City Council gave the city’s 140 votes in the Wise County Appraisal District board election to Jimmy Kirk on Monday. The county’s taxing entities will be casting 5,000 votes to seat five board members. Candidates for the five positions include Greg Ar- rington, Ray Cook Jr., Mike Hurd, Joey Luttrull, Chana Massey, Randy Moss, Jimmy Parker, Mark Starnes and Kirk. Votes are based on the entities’ property tax levies. Deadline to cast votes is Thursday, Dec. 15. Chief Appraiser Mickey Hand will count the votes and submit the results before Dec. 31. The five nominees with the most votes will serve a twoyear term beginning Jan. 1, 2012. The council also approved the updated flood plain maps from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The maps determine properties needing flood insurance. Permit rates for mechanical, electrical and plumbing projects were considered for revision. Under a simplified plan, permit fees would be based on one percent of the project cost, with a $75 minimum. The rates will be up for final adoption at the Nov. 28 meeting. The alleged thefts began in 2008, said Ashleigh Portales, crime scene investigator and public information officer with the Sheriff ’s Office. Smith allegedly used company credit cards and bank accounts to pay her own bills, including personal credit cards. As office manager, Smith was in charge of issuing fuel cards and debit/credit cards to employees, as well as managing company accounts. This is the second case of an office manager in Decatur allegedly stealing more than $100,000 from an employer in the same manner this year. In August, Maria VarelaMartinez, a former office manager for a doctor’s office, was arrested for the same charges. “You’d like to be able to trust the people you put in charge of your accounts,” Portales said. “It’s what you expect. But employers still need to keep a close eye on it.” Smith was given a $10,000 bond. She posted bail and was released the same day she was arrested. Q Email Brandon at [email protected]. However, just because she’s waiting doesn’t mean she’s in a holding pattern. Czerniak obtained 501(3)(c) status to establish a scholarship in Samantha’s memory. Although it has not yet been launched, updates on the scholarship can be found at www.samanthajillrogers.com. Last Thursday, she coordinated an effort to Paint the Town Purple in memory of Samantha and Delaney. Participants hung ribbons, painted windows, wrapped poles and hung signs all through Alvord. Czerniak’s efforts to secure dollars for the 380 expansion have garnered letters of praise from Wise County Sheriff David Walker and Congresswoman Kay Granger, who promised to monitor the project, among numerous others. Although her accomplishments will save lives on the expanded highway, more than anything I admire and commend her unwavered faith, her strength and the heroic manner in which she has commemorated her daughter and one of her best friends. WISE COUNTY MESSENGER, Decatur, Texas, Wednesday, November 16, 2011 11A SPORTS FOOTBALL Living by Scout’s code... Continued from page 16A said Boyd coach J.G. Cartwright. “He initially was a linebacker, and we moved him to a defensive end. Then we needed someone inside, so we moved him to defensive tackle. “(On offense) he came up through the program as a “Y” receiver. But this year, he agreed to move to the line. He’s unselfish, and he’s been willing to do whatever to help the team. He’s a good leader.” Some of those leadership qualities he credits to scouting, which he started in elementary school. “The Scouts are a big program in the Mormon Church,” Gillespie said. “Once I started, my mom pressed me to keep going. “It’s taught me perseverance, which is big in football when you run 200 plays and have to keep hitting the guy in front of you and not quit.” The recently turned 18-year-old earned the 21 merit badges to gain the prestigious Eagle Scout Award. He said the toughest badge to earn was the environmental science one. “My mom taught that one,” he said. “It’s not easy having your mom grade you.” His local review for the top badge was recently approved and forwarded to the national review board. For his Eagle Scout project in May, Gillespie designed a landscaping feature on the old Boyd High School campus near the cafeteria. He displayed his leadership, organizing 30 volunteers to knock out the large project in three hours. Along with learning new positions on the field, Gillespie has had to battle through an elbow injury he suffered against Callisburg. He wears a thick brace on the elbow, but it will need to be surgically repaired after the season if he plans to continue his playing career after high school. “For now, I just have to play through it,” he said. “It’s playoffs now. It’s do or die.” The Scout is willing to do whatever to make sure his team’s playoff dreams live on. Messenger photo by Joe Duty WILLING AND ABLE — Throughout the season, Boyd senior Gabe Gillespie has been content to sacrifice body and personal aspirations to help the Yellowjackets. He and the Yellowjackets will try to continue their march through the Class 2A playoffs Friday at Royse City. ’Jackets try to slow Redwater Boyd returns to area round By RICHARD GREENE The Boyd Yellowjackets will be where they’ve not been in four seasons Friday — the area round of the playoffs. The Yellowjackets got over the bi-district barrier for the first time since 2007 last Friday, holding off Dallas Life Oak Cliff. “It was big for us to get past the first round of the playoffs and get over that curse,” said Boyd quarterback Jared Cate. The Yellowjackets (9-2) now will play Redwater (73) in the area round of the Class 2A Division I Region II playoffs Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Royse City ISD Stadium. Boyd coach J.G. Cartwright is grateful to see his program reach this level after a pair of losses in the first round to Pilot Point in 2008 and ’09, and last year to Maypearl. “We couldn’t get past Pilot Point for two years, when we had a good team,” Cartwright said. “We just happened to catch them one year they won a state championship and went pretty far the other. Last year against Maypearl, we just made too many mistakes. Prior to that we went four rounds deep.” To make another deep run, the Yellowjackets will have to get past Redwater, which earned the top seed out of District 8-2A, a league that featured the preseason No. 1 team, New Boston, and back-to-back state champion, Daingerfield. “That says all you need to know about those guys,” Cartwright said. “These guys can play. It’ll be a good challenge for us.” Redwater was part of a three-way tie for first in its district after beating Daingerfield 43-26 and falling to New Boston 28-21. Redwater will feature a strong running attack based out of an unbalanced I formation, along with some wishbone. “We’ve not seen a team with as much of an unbalanced formation,” Cartwright said. “They have a quarterback that is a good operator and a big fullback that is 230 and can run well. They also have a big front line.” The Yellowjackets will need a better defensive game after allowing Life Oak Cliff to put up 544 yards last week, including 303 rushing by Michael Williams. “Life Oak Cliff had a lot more speed than any team we’ve played,” Cate said. “Redwater runs the ball a lot. Facing a running team like Life should help us this week.” The Yellowjackets had one of their better games running the ball last week. Fino Cardona ran for 191 yards on 24 carries. Cameron McIntire added 61. “That was one of the better games for our offensive line,” Cartwright said. “They were in a lot of seven-man fronts, and we were still able to make a lot of yards. I don’t want to take anything away from the backs. Fino and Cameron also ran the ball well.” NORTH TEXAS SPORTS MEDICINE Sponsored by 940-627-7532 Class 2A Division I Region II Area Boyd (9-2) vs. Redwater (7-3) 7:30 p.m. Royse City ISD Stadium Boyd: The Yellowjackets ran for 268 yards last week in a win over Life Oak Cliff. Jordan Ward signed with the University of Central Oklahoma for basketball. Chelsey Steele inked with Wayland Baptist for track. Harley Hooks made her official pledge to Midwestern for softball. Ward, a three-sport athlete, faced several difficult decisions about her future. The defending Class 2A 100 and 300 hurdles champion picked playing basketball over running track in college. She received multiple offers in both sports. “It’s a huge weight off my shoulders,” said Ward about the signing. “It was a very hard decision. I picked basketball because I just loved the game. There were people and reasons that made track enjoyable in high school that I don’t think would be there in college. Basketball, the game is the same, and I love being a part of a team.” Ward, an all-state point guard last year who averaged 17.4 points and 4.5 assists, picked UCO over Tarleton and Lipscomb University in Nashville. “I really liked the coach, and distance from home I liked better,” Ward said. “All of it put together made it the right place. “Wherever, I’m going to have to earn my spot, and I’m willing to.” Steele, who finished seventh in Class 2A in the 800 last spring and was also on the sixth-place 4x400, picked Wayland over Abilene Christian and UCO. “After state, I had a lot of people looking at me,” Steele said. “I liked the college and the coach [at Wayland].” Steele is hoping to return to state in the spring and take a shot at a medal. “I’m focused on getting on the podium,” she said. Hooks made her pledge to Midwestern before last softball season. She pitched Alvord to the playoffs as a freshman and sophomore. She posted an 11-11 record, striking out 136 batters and walked 77. She hit .396 with 20 RBIs on 36 hits. “I’ve been waiting for this since I was little,” Hooks said. “Midwestern felt like home. I liked the coaching, and it was very comforting there.” Hooks also considered South Dakota State, Louisiana-Lafayette and UT-Tyler. SEALING THE DEAL — Alvord’s Jordan Ward, top, Chelsey Steele, middle, and Harley Hooks, bottom, signed their letters of intent Monday for college. Bryce Powers and Brian Munn both recovered a fumble. “Eduardo Martinez, Jose Rubio and Giovanni Garcia made some key tackles that kept us in the game. Dylan Carnes was the Greyhounds’ top finisher in 72nd place. Hounds finish 12th in Class A By RICHARD GREENE The Slidell Greyhounds were unable to move up the ranks in Class A Saturday in a return trip to Round Rock. The Greyhounds finished 12th in the Class A race at the University Interscholastic League cross country championships. Slidell was 10th in 2010. Despite being unable to record a better finish, Slidell senior Dylan Carnes praised his teammates and their efforts. “I felt like we ran way better than last year,” Carnes said. “The whole team did good.” Slidell finished with 301 points. Boys Ranch won the state title with 72. Dylan Carnes led the Greyhounds, finishing 72nd in 19:38 on the 5K course at Old Settlers Park. Carnes and his teammates settled in toward the back half of the pack early in the race. “With it being the state level, we were antsy, and we tried to keep in our heads to keep the pace slow at the beginning,” Carnes said. “At the mile, we tried to open it up and see what we can do.” Khristian Talamantes was 81st in 19:57. Cord Hankins ran 20:08 for 85th. Jarrett Tinsman took 90th in 20:41. Jessie Bowen finished 93rd as the fifth Greyhound in 20:48. Luis Castillo was 97th in 20:55, and Daniel McCasland 101st in 21:19. As a group of freshmen and sophomores, the Decatur Eagles left Round Rock with a ninth-place finals in 2010. A year older and experienced, the Eagles moved up four spots, taking home a fifth-place showing in the Class 3A race at the University Interscholastic League’s cross country championships at Old Settlers Park. “We went down four spots, and that’s a great improvement,” said Decatur sophomore Taylor Clayton. “We were tight and ran how we should have within about 30 seconds of each other.” Decatur finished with 151 points. Kaufman won the state title with 61. Sanger took second with 80, and Liberty Hill nabbed third with 97 to reach the podium. Running just a little before 2 p.m., the Eagles battled wind gusts up to 30 mph, temperatures approaching 80 degrees and blowing dust from a tornup course. Venus’ Jeff Weisheit won the individual 3A title, running 15:54 on the 5K course. He was the lone runner to crack 16 minutes, winning by 16 seconds over Port Isabel’s Armando Fierro. Clayton turned in the Eagles’ top time, running a 17:25 to finish 42nd. The time was off 12 seconds from his time the previous year on the course. “Coach [David Park] didn’t want me to go out too fast,” Clayton said. “I had that playing with my mind. “I haven’t been running normal or felt good since the Reunion Run.” Daniel Smyers passed his brother Michael at the finish line to take 49th in 17:34. Michael was 50th in 17:35. Daniel started making a move up after coming off the levee with 800 meters left. “I didn’t want to beat him,” Daniel said about his brother. “I was hoping he was farther up there.” Remington May took 62nd in 17:47. Travis Kyle was the fifth Eagle, finishing 65th in 17:50. Tyler Wilson was 80th in 18:18, and Brandon Rivera 85th in 18:32. All seven Decatur runners will return next year. Bronze finish... Continued from page 16A dium. The three were also part of two state championship teams and the squad that finished second in 2010. “Take a poll and try to find someone else that’s been on the podium all four years,” said Decatur coach David Park. “This is a tremendous group. They battled all the way.” The Lady Eagles finished third with 131 points. Lucas Lovejoy claimed a second straight state title with 38. La Vernia took second with 67. Liberty Hill’s Susan Kemper won the Class 3A race, running 11:42 on the 3,200-meter course. She finished 10 seconds in front of defending state champion Katie Ruhala of Lovejoy. Decatur’s seven runners got a clean start, but through the pushing and shoving through the first 800 meters fell back to the middle of the pack. Nicole Neighbors was 17th through the first 800 meters, and her sister, Natalie, 24th. “We got moved around a bit and separated,” Park said. “One minute we were Messenger photo by Joe Duty LAST TIME AROUND — Decatur’s Bianca Morrison runs her final high school cross country race Saturday at the state meet. really tight, and then we got beat up a bit. They kept fighting and running. I wouldn’t have expected less.” By the 2,400-meters mark, Decatur’s two freshmen, Nicole Neighbors and Nancy Torres, were running stride for stride in the top 30. Neighbors fought her way to a 27th-place finish in 12:47. Torres took 30th in 12:48. “I wanted to be first for Decatur,” Neighbors said. “I’m happy we at least got a medal. I wanted to get something at state.” In her final race, Morrison crossed the finish line in 13:10 for 46th. “I used to love (running here),” Morrison said. “It was a lot warmer than all the other years, and the dust made me go blind. I felt slow.” But Morrison made a strong charge in the final 800 meters to move into the top 50. “I saw her on the levee and knew she was about to charge like she has in the other years,” Park said. Morgan Haney ran 13:14 for 53rd. Natalie Neighbors was the fifth Lady Eagle, running 13:18 for 60th. Bobbi Clemmer took 81st in 13:42, and Palomo 83rd in 13:49. The Lady Bulldogs finished with 125 points at the University Interscholastic League’s cross country championships in Round Rock. Spearman claimed the state title with 88. Melissa took second with 97. East Bernard was third with 111. “It was a fun journey,” said Alvord senior Jordan Ward. “We didn’t win, but it was worth it after six years. “We all had high expec- tations. Everyone ran the best they could. It’s hard (not to win), but we all tried.” Alvord coach Curtis Enis praised his team’s bid to get back on the podium that fell 14 points short. “I can’t fault the effort,” Enis said. “They came in wanting to win, ran hungry and took their best shot. They finished gassed with nothing left in the tank. We hoped to get on the stage, but came up short. “Melissa, Spearman and East Bernard ran extremely well. We didn’t run poorly. Sometimes you’ve got to pay your dues. We’ve got kids that will be hungry next year.” Luling’s Carley Glass won the race, running 11:50 on the 3,200-meter course at Old Settlers Park. Glass passed Melissa’s Rebecca Ulrich with just more than 900 meters left and held on to win by five seconds. Alvord freshman Lacey Watkins posted a 16thplace finish, running 12:49. She stayed within a spot or two of her finishing slot the entire race. “We penciled her in the 15 to 20 range, and that would be a good spot to get in,” Enis said. “She was in that range.” Watkins said it was a good debut at state. “I think I will get better over the years,” Watkins said. Ward took 32nd in 13:05. Freshman Clara Breashears ran 13:13 for 41st. The 4-10 freshman said it was a battle in the wind. “It was extremely windy,” Breashears said. “The hills and the dirt in my eyes made it tough. “I feel I accomplished a lot this year.” Ariel Rogers was 49th in 13:20. Chelsey Steele crossed the finish line as the fifth Lady Bulldog in 13:35 in 56th. Rebecca Evans ran 13:50 for 70th, and Madi Lynch 15:51 for 109th. “Becky really had a great day,” Enis said. “I thought she ran hard.” STRONG DEBUT — Alvord’s Lacey Watkins took 16th Saturday in the Class 2A race, running 12:49. Messenger photo by Mack Thweatt Lady Texans post top-20 finishes BY RICHARD GREENE For much of the season, Northwest’s Kellee McCann and Katherine Chavez stayed within a few steps of each other on the cross country course. Little changed Saturday at the University Interscholastic League championship in Round Rock. The Northwest sophomore and freshman from Wise County finished 16th and 17th in the Class 5A race. McCann nudged out her younger teammate, running 11:46.53 on the 3,200-meter course. Chavez crossed the finish line in 11:47.38. “It’s a great thing to have your teammate right there with you,” McCann said. “She helps me, and I help her.” It was McCann’s second trip to the state meet. She took 54th in 11:56 as a freshman. “I feel that I redeemed myself from last year,” she said. “I achieved my goal of being in the top 20. “I was down on myself at the end of last year. I feel this is a good starting point for track.” WORKING TOGETHER — Northwest’s Kellee McCann and Katherine Chavez finished 16th and 17th in the Class 5A race Saturday in Round Rock. Messenger photo by Joe Duty Chavez admittedly was a bit nervous to make her state debut. She said she just tried to stay with McCann. “It helped so much having her here,” Chavez said. “I couldn’t have done so well without her. “This doesn’t feel real. It can only get better from here.” McCann and Chavez were impressed with their times on a difficult day with 30 mph gusts, kicking up dirt and dust along the course. “It was very difficult weather,” McCann said. “It was a slower second mile. The wind was really bad on that part.” Through the first 800 meters, the two Lady Texans were in 20th and 22nd, 11 and 13 seconds behind the leader. They made it up to their finishing spots with 800 meter left, 31 seconds behind the leader Karis Jochen of A&M Consolidated. She won the race in 11:12.44. Northwest’s District 75A rival Southlake Carroll won the 5A team title with 34 points. Humble Kingwood was second with 48. Taylor takes 18th in Class 5A event By RICHARD GREENE Northwest senior Troy Taylor fought the fierce wind and competition Saturday in the Class 5A race at the University Interscholastic League cross country championships. Taylor brought home an 18th-place finish, running a 16:17 on the 5K course at Round Rock’s Old Settlers Park. “It was a good time in the 30 mph wind,” Taylor said. “The wind definitely played some mind games and messed with me a lot.” The Rhome resident’s time was 42 seconds off the 15:35 he turned on the course the previous year to finish ninth. Through 800 meters, Taylor looked to have a chance to get a medal in eighth place, just seconds behind the leaders. In the second mile, Taylor fell back to 20th, 30 seconds back of first place. In the final 800 meters, Taylor moved up two spots to finish 1:01 behind the winner, Craig Nowak of Houston Cypress Woods. The race wasn’t Taylor’s final high school race. He will run Saturday in the Nike South Regionals event at The Woodlands. STAYING IN THE CHASE — Northwest’s Troy Taylor makes his way around the Old Settlers Course Saturday. Taylor finished 18th. Hatcher Newly moved into their early 20th century American foursquare home, Gary and Karen Swain decided on traditional decorations to celebrate the holiday season. Gary Swain’s grandmother, Francis Brehm, handcrafted the decorations that adorn the egg tree in the dining room, one of the highlights of the decor. Marguarette Roberts and Vicki Richey of Decatur, along with Dee Anne Williford of Pandamonium Home Decor in Grapevine, assisted the family in decorating. The home has been around for a century and was purchased by the Hoyle family in 1908 from the Sears and Robuck catalog. It was completed around 1912 at the beginning of the arts and crafts movement. The Craftman architecture showcases simpler lines compared to the Victorian era. The 3,400-square foot home includes three bedrooms, four bathrooms and three living areas spread across three floors. The Swain family purchased the home in June 2011, and moved in with their daughter, Bianca Morrison, in August 2011, after completing restoration projects. Some of our neighbors are adding soil. Is this the best plan, or should I just wait until spring and possibly reseed? Or, do you think it will come back? There is a very good chance that you will have enough bermuda that greens back up again that you won’t have to do any of this. Many people have the mistaken idea that they can just sow bermuda seed into old lawns and expect it to grow and flourish. The seeds are far too tiny for that to work. If you’re going to reseed, you have to get rid of all the old grass and weeds, then rototill, then sow your seed and nurture it along. That’s a huge amount of work. The worst case might be that you have to dig sod from areas that did survive and replant your own bermuda into those areas that didn’t. I’d have to know more about why your neighbors are adding topsoil. That alone won’t do much good, and it can really introduce some obnoxious weeds. Dear Neil: I have two large hanging baskets of bougainvilleas. They have bloomed very well this year, and I’m sure they’re quite rootbound. Can I prune them way back and bring them in for the winter? When should I repot them? Prune them as much as you must, but as little as you can get by with. Hopefully you’ll have a bright, sunny spot to put them in. Bougainvilleas survive the winter best in a greenhouselike setting at 65 or 70 degrees. They survive winters worst in dark, cold garages and poorly lighted rooms in our houses. Get them back outside as soon as weather permits in the spring. That would be the best time to repot them as well.
