A QUICK CHAT WITH AUSSIE ROCKERS

Written by: Bridget Judd
It’s been a while between drinks for Perth
lads Eskimo Joe, but the boys are back
and better than ever with their latest
record.
‘Wastelands’ sees the trio venture into
bold new directions with producer Burke
Reid, swapping the raw croons of ‘Black
Fingernails, Red Wine’ for a lively electrosynth-driven sound that’s sure to get the
crowd moving.
Before the boys set off on the iconic
November festival, we caught up with
guitarist Joel Quartermain to talk about
their new album.
Wastelands is definitely an inspired new
sound for Eskimo Joe, what made you
want to switch things up on this record?
I think we’ve always been a band that’s
kicked back against what we’ve done on

that we haven’t been before. It just

seemed like the right time to do that.
What can listeners expect from Wastelands, compared to
your earlier albums?
Do you think making albums has gotten easier over the
years, or is there a constant pressure to change things
up or to top your last record?
I’d say the songwriting is still classic Eskimo Joe, but the
way it’s been dressed up is a bit different. What we’ve
always tried to do, and what we pride ourselves on, is
writing good tunes. We spend a lot of time getting to
the point where you can sit at the piano, really dress it
all down, and have it still hold up. So you can expect
something different, but at the core I think it’s still Esky.
Yeah, I mean, it got a bit too easy to make a classic
Eskimo Joe rock record, and that’s why we decided
not to do it this time. It was starting to sound like we
were in cruise control. So for this record we wanted to
shake it up and sound a bit more naive or dangerous, or
something like that. It certainly wasn’t an easy record to
make, it was a lot of hard work, but at the same time, it
was a really creative period for us.
There’s a really decisive vintage-electro feel to it, what
kind of influences inspired the change?
We were listening to a bunch of different stuff, but
definitely groups like LCD Soundsystem. They really
know how to morph machines and musicians - you’ve
got drum machines and all kinds of stuff going on, but
there’s also a band playing along to it. We didn’t program
anything on the record, it was all played live, but we were
playing around with a lot of different instruments like
them.
PAGE 6
Why did you decide to crowd-fund the album?
It was the first independent record that we’ve done, and
albums are expensive to make! It just seemed like a
good way to fund the record, and we’re lucky enough
that our fans got on board. We think of it as the ultimate
preorder - you know, when you preorder your record and
show up on the day to pick it up, even though you’ve
never heard it before. It’s very humbling that our fans
would buy a record that we hadn’t even written yet, so
we’re very lucky.
And how has the audience response been so far?
Yeah, really good! I mean, we haven’t played any
shows since the albums been out, but we’ve been
throwing in three or four songs into the shows that
we’ve done leading up to this point, and the response
has been great. The new stuff is heaps easier to move
to, it’s not as rigid, it’s got a bit more groove, so we’re
just finding the girls are busting out dance moves, and
so are we! So it’s good fun!
You’re going to be headlining the Gorgeous Festival
this November, what else is on the agenda?
Yeah, we’re really excited for it all! We’re doing a tour
of Australia over October/November, and then we’ll
be playing at the Gorgeous Festival, so we’re keeping
really busy! We’ll be in a town near you soon I’m sure!

She’s conquered the DJ world, bringing
the clubs to life with her thumping
beats! Now Havana Brown is set to
take on the pop industry with the
release of her debut album ‘Flashing
Lights.’ The album has seen instant
success with killer tracks that get you
moving. Here we chat with Australia’s
golden girl… ahead of her Gold Coast
Concert!
Charts, what was your initial reaction
at its instant success?
I was really happy! I can tell by social
media, which I mean is great, as you
can tell if people like it or not, and the
response has just been amazing. For it
to debut in the top 10 in Australia, I’m
ecstatic!
You started out as a DJ but have now

so that’s a good thing as well!
‘Flashing Lights’; does it reflect
aspects of your personality?
The album debuted at #6 on the Aria
PAGE 8
GCMAG - A GENERATION OF CHANGE OCTOBER 2013
PAGE 9
Yeah, absolutely! There are different aspects…
There’s the party girl! There’s the cheeky girl! There
is a serious side, there’s a couple of songs in there
that I consider my ballads but there not really ballads!
I’m never going to be the kind of girl that’s going to
have the full ballad like Celine Dion type song! I’ve
never loved that type of music; it’s not really me. But
there are different aspects on the album and it has
the vibes of the clubs because obviously I live in
the clubs! It’s definitely got the pop element with the
melody and lyrics because I love pop music too!
Tell us a bit about the recording process?
Well it’s all different. The way I like to write is by
having some sort of production or track already made
up. It’s got a vibe and it’s got a mood, it always helps
with writing and the concept and where you’re going
with the track. For me production is very important
because I like to be able to play it in the clubs and I
want it to be thumping! I want sounds that resonate
with what’s happening right now in the clubs. So that’s
always very important, so we start with that and then
write on top of it and create a melody. I do like to
create a melody first and then write to it.
What is your favorite song from the album?
That’s too difficult! I connect with every single song
on there obviously because I wouldn’t have it on
there otherwise! Everyday it’s a different song for me
because it depends on my mood. But you know I love
‘Ba Bing,’ I love ‘Warrior’, I love ‘No Tomorrow’, I swear
‘Any1’ gets me in a good mood, its got a good vibe
to it! Really, I cant chose one because everyday is
different for me.
Your latest single ‘Warrior’ is a killer dance track
and has been extremely popular, what’s the
inspiration behind your music?
Well you know what, the production is based on the
Melbourne shuffle. So you know that big massive
drop? Its Melbourne sounds. It’s created from
Melbourne where I’m from. And it’s actually called the
Melbourne shuffle so the sounds are inspired by my
hometown. But you know with the lyrics, its just about
every situation that I’ve experienced to be where I’m
PAGE 10
at right now. I’ve had some success and I feel like I’ve
conquered some people that would doubt me or try to
bring me down, or even obstacles that I’ve been able
to overcome and still achieve my dreams regardless
of what everyone is trying to do around me.
You’ve toured with some big names in the music
business, from the likes of Britney Spears, Lady
Gaga and Pitbull, did they give you any advice for
recording your own album?
No not advice on recording the album. I think
spending a lot of time with Pitbull, you see how he
works. He has a studio set up in his hotel room and he
is always on tour and he’s always writing and working
on music constantly! He will stay up all night partying
and then wake up in the morning and start working
on music. So for me, I get to watch these people and
see how they work. In this day and age, especially
the digital world, you have a lot more freedom to put
out lots of content at your own pace. You can put
out an album, then an EP and then just keep rolling
out singles every month if you wanted to. You know,
it’s about always trying new things, always going
for it and seeing if it works out. I think it’s all in the
numbers; the more that you work, the more chances
you have of creating great music.
Any plans to tour?
I’m always on tour! I’m playing tonight, then in Sydney
tomorrow, it’s a bit more on the DJ side of things but
I’m always touring! As far as a personal concert, I
really want to do that but I wouldn’t be able DJ for six
months and I would miss it so much. Obviously if your
touring you cant do side shows, so it would really take
me out of DJing for six months and its really about
deciding if I want to do that or not.
So what’s next for Havana Brown?
Well as soon as I finish my DJ tour in Australia right
now, I go back to LA and I’ve got studio time set up
and I keep touring in America. During the week I’m in
the studio with amazing, amazing producers so I’m
really excited!

This humble 19 year old with one of the most
unique names we’ve ever heard of, is taking
the Australian music scene by storm. We sat
down with Asta, the Tasmanian songstress,
to have a chat with her about her fans, the
Falls Festival and the future.
So I have to ask, is Asta actually your real
name?
Yes, it is.
How old are you?
I’ve just turned 19 this year.
asta
CHATS AHEAD OF FALLS
Whereabouts in Tasmania are you from?
I’m from Hobart, but I was born in a little old
town called Cygnet.
Are you proud of your heritage? coming
from that area of Australia?
Definitely, I was very lucky to have grown up
in such a small, unique place.
How grateful are you for the support you have
received from your family, friends and fans?
I’m just overwhelmed really. It surprises me every
single day. Throughout my tour I’ve been going
out after the shows and talking to my fans. It’s
just been amazing hearing the response. That
really keeps me going as an artist, as it gives me
more confidence and hope. So I am very grateful
for all the support so far.
Tell us about the triple j Unearthed High
competition, because this was really your big
break, wasn’t it?
Yes, triple j Unearthed High is a competition set
up for high school students. Originally I thought
I wasn’t eligible, because in Tasmania we have
college for years 11 and 12. So I didn’t realise
until someone else pointed out to me that I did
fit the bill. I put up a track called ‘My Heart’s on
Fire’. I wasn’t expecting it, but it just spread. It
spread like wildfire, and a lot of people were
loving the song. So then I guess triple j picked
up on it and it just so happened that I won the
competition. It was a real kick-start to my career.
What about music made you follow the
path your currently on ?
Well it’s always been there. When I was
younger I started writing songs and lyrics
and it’s just something that has always been
there in my life. I have tried other avenues
such as being a dancer or an actor, but
music has definitely always been in my
blood.
How would you describe your sound?
It kind of varies. At the moment I’ve got a
band, so I used to be playing as more of
an electronic artist, but now I’ve got a full
band. They provide a much fuller sound,
more rockier. It’s hard to describe. I still
kind of keep that electronic element in my
music though, like including synthesizes.
But I guess the main stitch throughout all my
songs is my voice really. All my songs are
quite diverse.
PAGE 16
Who or what has inspired you as an artist?
I would probably say growing up, Beyoncé. I
think she’s everyone’s idol, she is kind of the
pinnacle of female singer success. So yeah, I
do look up to her a fair bit, and Madonna too,
and Bjork and Annie Lennox. I guess just strong
female artists really, that have their own thing
going on.
How was the experience finding out you had
won the competition ?
Well I just got a phone call. I was waiting in the
morning before school, as all the other finalists
were. Just the minute that the phone call came
through… yeah, I will never forget it. It was a real
life-changing experience, like everything is going
to unfold after this moment. This past year has
just been amazing.

PAGE 17
Are you excited about playing at the Falls
Festival?
Yes of course! This has been my biggest
dream for a long time, so it’s definitely
something that I can tick off the list. I am
really excited to play on a big stage and
at a festival. I have done a few festivals
before, but this one is definitely going to be
a lot of fun.
Especially because Marion Bay is right
near your home town as well?
Yes! I will be spending New Year’s Eve in
Tasmania, which will be great.
What do you hope to gain from your
experience at Falls?
Meeting other artists will be really good. It’s
just another challenge really. I’m looking
forward to working with the audience in that
environment. I’m sure everyone is going
to be very pumped up, being in a festival
mood. It’s just another challenge for me,
which I’m really excited about.
Have you been to the Falls Festival
before?
Yes I have, about 3 times, just as a punter.
There is some beautiful landscape and
scenery there. There is a beach there,
which is amazing! You can take a walk
down to the beach and just chill out.
What are your plans for after the Falls
Festival?
Well I hope to have been in a studio
recording. I’m just working away on an
album at the moment, and I’m getting into a
studio soon. So I hope to be playing other
festivals as well, being added to other bills.
I also hope to go travelling and to just meet
people, I’m looking forward to meeting lots
of people.
And finally, what advice would you give
to anyone chasing their dreams, whether
it is in music or any other field?
You just have to do it! You can’t let anxiety
and fear take over, because you put
so much effort into it. Like with me, it’s
rehearsing and travelling. You put all your
money into it, so you really just have to go
for it and live it up! There may be no sun
shining tomorrow. That’s how I think of it,
every time I step onto a stage. You really
just have to be very focused, and obviously
believe in yourself.
Thanks for taking the time to chat with us
today best of luck :)
That’s no problem, thank you!
Who else are you looking forward to
seeing perform at the Falls Festival?
I’m really looking forward to seeing Neil
Finn; I believe he’s playing solo, which is
really cool. I’m a big Crowded House fan,
so that will be great. And MGMT, I’m looking
forward to seeing their live set as well, and
how they come across live.

not your average music festival its a bit special
written by: Erin Ibbott
PAGE 20
While most festivals around our
country are all about the music,
the Falls Festival is able to offer
you so much more than that.
The team behind this festival
work especially hard to bring
this unique celebration of life to
you.
The thing that makes the Falls
Festival truly unique is the fact
that it takes place in some of
the most breathtaking places
in Australia. National festival
director Paul Piticco explains
that each site was specifically
chosen, and it was their intent
to have the location as one of
the main focuses of the festival.
He says that every location
of the Falls Festival is
geographically stunning and
placed right next to a beach.
“It’s a time of year when
everyone is relaxing by the
beach and that’s where we
decided it’s best for us to be
too,” Mr Piticco says.
While tickets to the Falls
Festival at Byron Bay and
GCMAG - A GENERATION OF CHANGE OCTOBER 2013
Lorne are sold out, festivalgoers are still able to purchase
tickets to Marion Bay. And
there are many outstanding
features of this site.
Like all of the Falls Festival
locations, Marion Bay
is situated in a natural
amphitheatre, but it also has
the added bonus of having the
Tasman Sea as its backdrop.
“You can sit anywhere in the
main arena with a perfect
view of the stage, while the
sun sets over the ocean. It is
spectacular and something you
won’t experience at any other
music festival in the country,”
Piticco explains.
In Mr Piticco’s line of work
he travels to music festivals
all around the globe, but
according to him, Marion Bay
is by far the most stunning he
has seen.
The wonders are not limited to
the music arena though, with
many other attractions on offer
in our Southern-most state.
PAGE 21
With natural beauty, demonstrated in sights such as Wineglass Bay, Cradle Mountain and the
Bay of Fires, Tasmania truly is one stunning island.
According to Mr Piticco, there are some great surf spots to be found, or art lovers can
drop into MONA in Hobart after the festival and spend a day or two there. Hobart at this
time of years is also a foodies paradise, with the Taste of Tasmania festival happening from
December 28th until the 3rd January. It showcases some of the fantastic local produce that
Tasmania is so famous for.
The Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race is also happening at this time as well. As Mr Piticco
explains: “The whole island is alive; it is the perfect time of year to link in your festival
experience with a broader itinerary to explore the state.”
As well as being a great destination holiday, the Falls Festival also has a number of important
principles underpinning its success. Mr Piticco explains that they are lucky with their sites as
they are surrounded by a community who embrace the event’s sustainable and community
focused beliefs.
PAGE 22
Sustainability is an important issue for the team behind Falls. The event has been
internationally recognised as a pioneer in environmental and sustainable initiatives.
According to the team behind the festival, it is not easy being green, but they are always
trying to improve and save where they can.
The other main principle behind the festival is its community based approach. This can be
seen through its involvement of all ages and of music acts from all around the globe. It is
able to engage people from all walks of life, and because of this, the Falls Festival really is a
unique event.
So whether you want to soak up the music from great international and local acts, revel in the
community feel of the festival, or even just sit back and enjoy your spectacular surroundings,
Marion Bay is the place to be at New Year’s. Don’t miss out!

GRANT
SMILLIE
THE MAN BEHIND THE MUSIC
Written by: Adelaide Lodder
Spend a day in the life of Grant Smillie
and you will quickly discover that he lives
and breathes electronic music.
The DJ, record label owner, venue owner,
producer and citizen of the world says his
life is never dull and GC Mag caught up
with the busy jet setter to catch a glimpse
into his vivacious lifestyle.
The man who always has a smile on his
face said he first took to music in school
and was instantly bit by the music bug.
“I have always gravitated towards dance
music, always had a natural attraction to
it”
As he progressed through his studies,
music played a dominant role and soon
enough he was playing at different clubs
and events. At just 20 years old Grant
had begun producing and playing his
own records.
the reactions I get from the audience. It
gives me instant gratification when I see
the crowd connecting with my music and
singing it back to me”.
Grant’s charismatic attitude was
contagious and in no time at all he was
hosting The Weekend show on Nova
playing the hottest new dance tracks from
Australia and around the world.
“I love radio because you get to connect
with people and break new and exciting
music”.
Grant and his partner in crime, Ivan
Gough went on to create his production
outfit TV ROCK and has released many
chart topping hits under this label.
He furthered his career by touring with
some of the most talented and respected
names in the music industry all over the
world.
His career sky rocketed when he released “I was given the opportunity to meet
his first successful record “flaunt it” and

which is truly an experience that I will
“The sole reason I love making music is

Grant has successfully cemented his name
in the music industry and is best buddies
with the big dogs of music including David
Guetta, Steve Angello, Axwell, Fedde Le
Grande and Sebastian Ingrosso just to
name a few.
Travelling the world has been one of the
main highlights of Grants career, although
he never passes up an opportunity to play
a gig in Australia as he says, “Nothing
beats a home crowd and the feeling of
being back on home soil”.
Grant wants to continue his successful
record label in America and around the
world and envisions his radio show to be a
major hit in the US just as it is in Australia.
“I am a firm believer that sticking to your
guns and trusting your instincts will lead
you down a road to success. It is not worth
copying what others have done you need
to find a sound that works for you and if you
do this then you will be a star.”
“I have always
gravitated towards
dance music, always
had a natural
attraction to it”
To top it off Grant was the recipient of not
one, but two ARIA awards which he says
was nothing short of amazing.
“It was such a good feeling when I won for
the first time and it gave me such a sense
of accomplishment in my work.”
Now a household name, Grant told us that
he would have never settled for a nine to
five office job and that pursuing his passion
has given him the opportunity to combine
his loves of music and travel rolled into one.
“To me this job is never boring and I love
the diversity that comes with it.”
Coming this far in just 10 short years, we
ask what Grant has planned for the next 10
years.
He told us that he hopes to set up camp in
America and continue to DJ and produce
only the best dance music.
He also hopes to expand his passion
for hospitality by opening up more bars
and restaurants in America and even the
Caribbean’s.

kelsykarter
Written By: Owen George
Today we chat with Kelsy Karter Gold Coaster
talented musician and part of the growing Aussie
invasion of the USA with Kelsy moving over a few
years ago and leaving her individual mark on the
LA music scene.
We took some time to chat with her about all things
music and her new video Ghost Town which has
started to take the world by storm and also working
with Infected Mushroom.
So first off congratulations on the new video
Ghost Town … how did you find the whole
creative process …?
To be honest, it was STRESSFUL -- everything
seemed to go wrong, but I guess that’s because
chaos just follows me around haha. It was a rad
experience on a whole though! I learned alot for
the next one! haha
Now the video and track have a unique flair of
all things you and your own brand of music. For
people not familiar with your music how would
you describe it in a sentence…?
Hmm.. I draw inspiration from ALL genres of
music. But I guess you could call it “dark pop”.
What is it like after going through the process
and seeing the finished product live for the
world to see..?
It’s a special feeling. You put your heart into
something and then the world gets to judge it...
Call you weird, call you crazy..Whatever it is...I love
the mystery and the adventure of it.
It was amazing. I love them so much. They are the
most talented musicians ever.. and they believe in
me. I consider them more than a project I worked
on. They were a turning point in my career, and
true friends.
We are all keen to hear what’s down the road for
you next …?
SO much! I am doing a Cali high school tour
next month.. gonna be a wild ride. And an EP by
the end of the year. Then I am coming home to
perform in January!
So here we are now how would you describe
your journey so far ….?
Colorful. And weird. Just the way I like it. Haha!
And speaking of the journey what inspired you
to get into music …?
I was born into a family of musicians. I didn’t
decide it one day, it’s just always been the way...
So with all this work do you get much time off
And if so what does your ideal day off involve …
just to wind down and escape …?
Causing some havoc of course haha. And food.
But I am always doing what I love..Music is always
somehow involved <3
And in closing [ Insert whatever you would like to
talk about ]
Rebel Love. POW!
Earlier this year we also heard that you were
working on a project with Infected Mushroom
how was the experience…?

meshel
was reading my blog posts on Mamamia, and she suggested that I write a memoir! She
really encouraged me all the way through, because I didn’t really want to. I didn’t think I
had anything interesting to say!
laurie
You talk about your parents a lot throughout the book - have they read it?
Yeah, absolutely! I’m not one for secrets, and I certainly didn’t want a time-bomb ticking
away that my parents hadn’t read [laughs].
What did they think of it?
They liked it! My mum is always just happy to be spoken about, she
doesn’t really care what you’re saying. I learnt that many years ago in
stand-up when I used to do routines that I thought were a bit rough,
and she’d love them - I’d just think, ‘oh... okay’ [laughs]. As I’ve gotten
older I’ve been a lot more open about everything, so all the drug stuff
they probably had pieced together. I don’t think they’re too shocked
at this point.
Written by: Bridget Judd
From the highs and lows of her career, to battles with drug abuse and the
untold world of Melbourne’s hidden brothels, nothing is off-limits for quickwitted comedian Meshel Laurie in her latest venture.
The Fence-Painting Fortnight of Destiny is a candid look into the life of the
Toowoomba-born comic, who lays her cards on the table in this hilarious
tale of life, love and everything in between.
Taking time out from her busy schedule, we caught up with Meshel to
discuss the recent release of her memoir.
I just finished your book, it’s really funny!
Thank you very much!
it’s also very candid. Were you worried at all
about being so open?
No, no, I’m a very honest person. I think
I’m more worried about someone else
springing me about something, you
know? I don’t like having secrets.
I’d be more scared if I had
secrets other people could
tell!
It seems like a really driving force throughout your career has
been the fear that you’re going to be stuck somewhere
I’m one of those people, and it goes against every spiritual teaching
that you’ll ever read, that it’s not the place that makes you happy - but
the place actually does make me happy [laughs]. I always wanted to get
to Melbourne, and now that I’m working in TV and radio, I really do feel a
sense of accomplishment and contentment.
Are those anxieties still there at all?
I worried myself, because I have always tended to be a person
who thinks, “What’s next? What’s next?” But now that I’m here
I actually do feel a great feeling of satisfaction, and am
looking forward to cruising on this level for as long as I
can.
If you could go back, what advice would you
give to a younger you?
Just to keep going, and never give up, you
know? And when in doubt, work a bit
harder. That’s what I’ve always tried to
do. And that’s the great thing about
stand-up, you can work as hard or
as soft as you choose to. When
times would get tough, I’d really
get stuck in and write some new
jokes, and work hard for a period
of time. It lifted my spirit, and
then it lifted me career wise as
well!
What inspired you to
write your memoir now?
Well, I had been wanting
to write a book for quite
a while, I love the idea of
being able to work quietly at
home. I pitched a few books
ideas, and no one was ever
interested in them - and then all
of a sudden I got an email from
an editor at Allen & Unwin who
PAGE 34
You’ve got your show on Nova,
you’re on This Week Live, and
you’ve got a book out - how do
GCMAG - A GENERATION OF CHANGE OCTOBER 2013
PAGE 35
you balance everything?
Really badly! [Laughs]. Certainly the first
two or three weeks that the book was out
were incredibly chaotic and I was barely
holding on by my fingertips. This year
was the first time in my life that I actually
missed the flight to an engagement! So
there was a period of time around the
middle of this year where I really was
hanging on by a thread, but it’s eased off
a bit. I can see a nice holiday blooming!
What’s next for you?
I’d like to write more books. I pitched a
book about my years in the sex industry
many times, and no one was really
ever interested, so I’m hoping now they
will be. There’s a chapter in this book
about it that I’d really like to expand
on. I’d really like to get some current
sex workers involved with that book,
because I realised through a Twitter
argument, that then turned into a really
good conversation, thyat my experience
in the sex industry is really quite
outdated. You know, when I worked in
brothels in Melbourne, the entire city
was in the grip of a heroin wave, and I
think it was a very different time! So I’d
really like to reflect on my time, and then
catch up with some of those girls who I
haven’t seen in ten years to see what’s
shaking now!

St Peters Basilica framed by rows of trees, it
really is a work of art.”

THE NEXT GENERATION OF HAIR STYLISTS
Written By: Bec Wheldon
De Lorenzo; for those not familiar with the brand name,
think avant garde plus hair. It is a leader in Australia for
style, colour and volume; bright colours bold style and BIG
volume.
Back in September De Lorenzo hosted their annual ASPYA
Summer Conference in the beautiful Whitsunday Islands.
Held over 3 days the conference consisted of a spectacular
runway show that kicked off the event and celebrated the
emerging talent that exists in the De Lorenzo family.
And what talent and creativity there was. Our resident
creative photographer Michael Greves was approached
to photograph the runway show for De lorenzo, his work
definitely captured the four themes of the fashion show.
With Free Love kicking off the show which brought us back
to the 60’s and 70’s era and was then followed by an Andy
Warhol inspired theme of Pop Art. The show the moved to
an amazing twist of Punk before drawing to a close with
an incredible Lady Gaga inspired, world altering theme of
Space. Futuristic hair with futuristic flair and colour!
The conference also consisted of the ASPYA salon of the
year awards and celebrations with Hair Review being
announced salon of 2013! Amongst the attendees for the 3
days were many a guest speaker and celebrity.
The 2014 De Lorenzo ASPYA conference will be held in
Singapore (!!!!) and we are already excited to see what will
come from the event next year.

Beach babes? Check. Designer

Check.
This is what happened when photographer Michael Greves and
Owen George Editor at GCMAG
sat down with Michaela Fitzgerald
of QT Fashion Week and Awards
a concept was created to take the
direction of a Good Summer Issue
which led us to the stunning Cabarita Beach in Northern New South
Wales.
“I like the images to pop – it has to
be vibrant,” Greves says, his admiration for the industry clear as day.
Greves also owns and operates Le
Truck, his unique custom location
production facility. Which allowed for
a smooth day on location.
In this shoot, it was Greves’ first
time using a drone, which is a small,
remote-controlled helicopter. “It allowed us to get unique aerial shots
of the models and the amazing
location to create a teaser for the
magazine – the shoot was wrapped
up by about 9.30, 10am, so it was
quite quick.”
GC Mag was lucky enough to shoot
on the magnificent Cabarita Beach,
a small but charming coastal town
known for its surfing and relaxed
holiday atmosphere. The models,
Melody Samuels and Craig Van Der
Hoven, melted right in to the beautiful scenery.
Managing Director of Katz Manage-
ment Kathy Castens spoke highly of
the pair.
“Both Craig and Melody have quite
fresh looks, and are very well suited
to the modelling industry.”
For Melody, it is her first time in the
modelling industry. She is currently
in the representative Runaway Bay
basketball team, and is undertaking a traineeship at the Gold Coast
Sports Academy. Her passion is
sport – at the moment, she trains
children in cricket, basketball and
soccer.
As for Craig, his talents also lie in
the sporting arena. He is in the Ateams for basketball and swimming
at The Southport School, about to
complete his senior year.
“Craig is very mature – he will do
well in this business.” Kathy says.
Craig and Melody are the winners of
the 2013 Katz Management Ultimate Look competition and as part
of this they were given the opportunity to participate in this shoot and
a paid position to walk in the QTFW
events in 2014

Citrus Chic – Shannon Edwards
Print Attack – Denise Cojocaru
Stand out in a crowd with a pop of colour this season. A white blazer and belt can bring a
more corporate feel to such a bright colour without becoming dull.
Clashing prints can look eclectic and stylish if done correctly, without looking like you got
dressed in the dark. Don’t be afraid to mix contrasting prints, as long as there is a common
underlying colour.

Leopard Print – Tori Skilton
If you want to wear bright colours, yet shake in your boots at the thought of neon yellow,
cobalt blue is the colour for you. This colour goes hand in hand with black and white
accessories.
Leopard is the top of the food chain in the fashion jungle for the upcoming seasons. Small
bites are best for this trend, such as shoes, a dress and clutch bag or wrap skirt.
