Acquisition in Autism:
Communicative echolalia is the language ‘soup’ from which self-generated language emerges.
This seminar is intended for participants who would like to apply the principles of Natural
Language Acquisition (NLA) to assessment and treatment of language development in children
who are, or have been, echolalic. The course addresses children with autism spectrum disorders
(ASD), but is appropriate for treating other children who are gestalt language processors.

Echolalia to Self-Generated Language —
Assessment and Treatment
The course reviews the linguistics of echolalia in neurotypical and ASD language development
and the research on the communicative use of echolalia in autism. The course describes the
natural stages of language development from Stage 1 (communicative echolalia) to Stages 4-6
(self-generated grammar) in individuals who are gestalt language processors, and focuses on
detailed assessment of spontaneous language, determining the developmental stages of that
language, and deriving appropriate language development goals.
Several language samples will be analyzed with the NLA scoring protocol, and participants are
invited to bring in language samples of their own. The course will begin with the principles for
younger children (3-6), and will continue with principles for older children (7-10). Guidelines
for students older than 10 will be considered.
Participants are urged to complete the Level 1 online course (Natural Language Acquisition in
Autism: Echolalia to Self-Generated language – An Introduction) before attending this seminar.
Completion of this online course is not mandatory but those who take this online course
will be better prepared to benefit from the onsite seminar. For Level 1 online course visit
NorthernSpeech.com/CEUs and search #e82.
CONTENT DISCLOSURE: Speaker is author of the book, Natural Language Acquisition on the Autism

The course describes the linguistics of echolalia in language development, starting with the
use of large ‘units of meaning’ known as language ‘gestalts’. It compares the gestalt language
processing of neurotypical children with that of children with ASD. It reviews research on the
communicative use of echolalia, and addresses the differences between ASD echolalia in the
past and in the present. The course describes the natural stages of language development
from Stage 1 (communicative echolalia) to Stages 4-6 (self-generated grammar) in individuals
who are gestalt language processors, and focuses on supporting children with ASD as
they move through the stages. The course describes a protocol for assessing spontaneous
language in autism, determining the stages of language development, and deriving
appropriate language development goals.
l Apply
the linguistic descriptions of analytic and gestalt language processing to describe two styles of language development.
l Describe
the six stages of language development for gestalt language processors (echolalia to complex self-generated language).
l Describe
the similarities and differences in language development between neurotypical gestalt language processors and ASD gestalt language processors.
l Describe
the significance of the research regarding the communicative functions
of echolalia.
l
echolalic utterances
