There were about six such events, half of which happened before the age of twenty. Upon reflection, it struck me how instrumental our early years are in setting our course in life. This truth underscores the great responsibility we have here at Eagle Ranch with the children in our care. Of course it is not just what happens in our life that is impactful, but how we process it. It is our privilege at Eagle Ranch to walk alongside our boys and girls as they address the painful experiences in their lives. Time and again, I have heard from our graduates how profound the lessons they learned at Eagle Ranch were in shaping who they have become as adults. It is true that nothing is wasted in our lives; God is always shaping us and redeeming the bad to work for our good (Romans 8:28). We appreciate your support that allows us to positively impact the children of Eagle Ranch. God’s grace and peace to you and your family. But those who trust in the Lord for help will find their strength renewed. They will soar with wings as eagles.” Isaiah 40:30-31 Since Eagle Ranch opened its doors 30 years ago, the campus has grown to include many special, memorable places. The realization of a dream for a chapel was made possible through the generosity of Don and Nancy Panoz in May of 1993. The chapel is a place of rest and reflection for our children and staff. It also is the site of weekly staff worship services and devotional times with the boys and girls. Going Home Their families remain involved with the program through counseling, meetings and activities. Children, as well as their families, are given goals to work toward so they can return home. They get the opportunity to work on these goals by going home every other weekend and during holiday breaks. After going home for the Christmas break, students at Eagle Ranch School were asked to write about their time home. The children were candid about what worked well and where things fell short, understanding that it is all part of the process to help them work toward family restoration and renewal. Bailey Oscar Morgan Morgan• The Glory Home “My family and I had an amazing break. We all got along very well, and if there were any problems, one of us would call a meeting. We expressed our feelings better than we did before Eagle Ranch, so that’s definitely a plus! Before, I never really knew what Christmas was really about. It’s about love and togetherness. Christmas means more to me now than ever, and I think that my family would say the same. I was able to ponder how truly blessed I am to have a family that loves and cares about me. I have grown to be more thankful for my life, and my outlook on myself has changed drastically. Bailey • The Glory Home Oscar • The Peace Home “My Christmas break was very fun. The thing that worked was trying not to talk back to my parents – because we all know that doesn’t get you anywhere. The things that did not work well at home were being rude, mumbling, and rolling my eyes. I would have to say I did see some changes in me and my family. At one point, my twin brother tried to start an argument. I told him that I wasn’t going to argue with him. We had good days, and that is very good for us.” “My time at home was fun. I was able to bond and hang out with my family a lot. While at home, my parents set some rules and they used the choice-consequence method. That method works well, and it kept me straight on what I should do. Another thing is my parents have enforced at home how homelife works at Eagle Ranch. Honestly, this would have been great for me and my family a year ago. Excerpt from On Eagle’s Wings “Eddie, this is Loyd Strickland.” “Fine, fine,” he replied cordially. “Eddie, what are you doing right now?” “To tell you the truth, I’ve been praying.” “Well, listen here, you get off those knees of yours right now.” “What?” “I said get off of your knees. I’ve decided to give you $10,000 through my foundation and there’s another fella up here who’ll probably give you $5,000 more – that is, if you can find the time in your busy schedule to make it up here to talk to him. So get up and start moving, son. I believe you’ve got some work to do.” the Door to This is one of many valuable pieces of advice Diane Magnus learned from her daddy, Loyd Strickland. Sitting in the Chestnut Mountain office where Strickland beckoned Eddie Staub in 1983 to provide him some of the first seed money for Eagle Ranch, Diane shared a few fond memories of her dad and the Ranch. Joined by her husband, Doug Magnus, President and CEO of Conditioned Air Systems, the couple also reflected on their ongoing support. What are some of your earliest memories of the Ranch? Diane: We’ve known Eddie since he arrived in Georgia. I remember feeling like Eddie was my new brother. I had a lot of those because dad was involved in YoungLife. But he was the latest and greatest at the time. I remember dad would say, “There’s something about that boy.” And they really had zero in common, except for a love for the Lord. Doug: I remember Eddie sitting in front of my office in his little blue car in 1983. He came in and said, ‘Doug we need you.’ And I said, ‘Eddie you don’t need me as bad as I need you.’ I was just getting into my business. We couldn’t do a lot to begin with, but over time we were able to do more. It’s been amazing to watch the Ranch grow and to watch our business grow. We’ve all just grown together in this community. Diane: Eddie asked my dad to open doors. He was ready to do the work; he just didn’t know who he needed to see. So Daddy introduced Eddie to people like Sonny Ellis. Sonny’s stamp of approval opened doors because he didn’t give it to everyone. One meeting led to the next and set things off. invest in what you know Loyd Strickland and Vince Dooley You have helped sponsor and host Ranch events, give regularly to our Honor & Memorial Program and provide ongoing support for the Ranch. Tell us more about your history of support and why you do it. Doug: We’ve been providing heating and air conditioning since the start. In the early days, some of my guys would give up their Saturdays to get the work done. The first building we put a system into was the first administration office, which was also Eddie’s first real home on the Ranch. Diane: I think with the passage of time, we’re even more excited than we were back then in the beginning. I first knew about the Ranch because of my dad and his support to help get it started. Then Doug got involved. Then we supported it together. And now we’re bringing our children into it. Our children love Eagle Ranch and support it too at their level. I think people support the Ranch because it makes you feel like it belongs to you – people feel like it’s theirs. Doug: When Diane’s dad’s foundation closed out, we wanted to continue to support the Ranch and its maintenance, so we started a foundation of our own. The Ranch was the first line item for our foundation. What do you tell others about Eagle Ranch? Doug: I keep the book On Eagle’s Wings in the office, and I’ll give them to friends who I think it would mean something to, who might want to give their support. Diane: It’s sort of like a parent talking about their child — that real love. Eagle Ranch has proven its commitment. Supporting it is a way to honor our faith. The Ranch wouldn’t be there without huge amounts of faith. It’s been a blessing to not only the children who have been there, but to this community. I still tell Eddie to this day that his dream, his vision, was small compared to God’s dream, His vision. There’s that saying: God can always dream a bigger dream than we can. I think He did. And now you see it. It’s just a special place. A poultry pioneer and Hall County community pillar, Loyd Strickland (1925-2013) played an instrumental role in the dream of Eagle Ranch becoming a reality. Learning Through Relationships and Community What does it take for a failing class clown who was expelled from school to make honor roll and set his sights on becoming a pediatric surgeon? For Kage, 14, the answer is simple: people who care. An athletic 9th grader who loves football and skateboarding, Kage looks forward to college. He hopes his success in one of his favorite subject, science, will help him make it into medical school to pursue a career as a pediatric surgeon. Smaller classes and individual attention from teachers helped Kage realize he was capable of making better grades. But the game changer was the relationships he’s formed in the community around him at the Ranch. “I love working with kids, and I love science,” Kage said. “So I think being a surgeon would be perfect.” “My social studies teacher goes to my church, so I get to talk to him whenever I want to about when the next test will be and stuff like that,” he said. He likes that teachers will take time to explain details and answer questions. The environment at the Peace Home where he stays has furthered his success, and helped him make honor roll each semester this school year. “I get a lot more study time at the house and time to think about things,” he said. “I’ll ask my friends in the house to help me if I need it, and sometimes I help them.” The spirit of community and the relationships Kage has formed changed his attitude about school and Eagle Ranch. “I hated school. I hated learning,” he recalled. “But I started getting A’s in social studies, and I was doing well in math. I was like, ‘Wow. I can do this.’” “ ” Wow. I can do this. The change is rippling to other areas of his life as well. “I still struggle with acting out and disrespect, but everything is starting to change. It helps that there are a lot of people who care about me here.
