schools’ programme IRELAND’S TRAVELLING CINEMA Welcome to the 2008/2009 Cinemobile School Booklet Cinemobile - What is it? Cinemobile is Ireland’s Travelling Cinema, bringing the magic of the movies to those towns and villages throughout the country without access to cinema. The Cinemobile is an ingenious machine – it looks exactly like an ordinary articulated truck but in less than an hour converts into a 100 seater cinema. The Cinemobile school booklet continues to be hugely popular and last year we screened to over 10,000 pupils nationwide. This success is as a result of the continued support from schools, principals and individual teachers around the country who seek to bring the educational and creative aspects of films to their students. The integration of film into the curriculum provides an opportunity for us to work more closely with teachers and pupils and for the 2008/09 academic year we are again offering schools the opportunity to invite Cinemobile into their own school yard. To help with your selection, we have again divided this booklet into different sections with films suitable for pupils at Senior Cycle, Junior Cycle and Primary School level. For Senior Cycle we carry the Comparative Film Texts on the English Leaving Certificate for both 2009 and 2010 as well as film adaptations of English texts on the curriculum. Once again we are including film texts from Moving Image Arts, the new A level subject offered to students in Northern Ireland schools, as well as carrying a selection of foreign language films, documentaries and Irish Shorts. Where did the idea come from? The idea of a mobile cinema originated in France with a company called Toutenkamion literally meaning “all in a truck”. The second largest of the Millennium projects – the Spire being the largest - it has been touring the island of Ireland for the past seven years, showing films to school groups, film clubs, youth groups and the general public. We also screen films at various festivals throughout the country. Who Supports Cinemobile? Cinemobile is a subsidiary of the Irish Film Institute and is a non-profit making organisation. We are funded by the Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon, Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board, RTÉ, Northern Ireland Screen and Europa Cinemas. Galway County Council and Kerry County Council also contribute to Cinemobile. Can Cinemobile visit my school? This year also we are introducing a selection of films that teachers may find suitable for discussion and analysis with Transition Year pupils. Yes, Cinemobile is Ireland’s Travelling Cinema and we cover 31 counties in the island of Ireland. We can go into your school directly or park at a near-by area. However, we need space of 20 x 20 metres to screen safely in a location. We carry full public liability indemnity insurance and generate no refuse. In addition to this selection Cinemobile staff is happy to source other films that may be of particular interest to teachers. We provide the cinema space, the projectionist, source the film and the copyrights… and you provide the audience. We plan our tour some weeks in advance, so book early to ensure we get to your area. We hope you enjoy the selection. Noreen Collins Cinemobile Manager FOR FURTHER INFORMATION CONTACT: CINEMOBILE, CLUAIN MHUIRE, MONIVEA ROAD, GALWAY.
